Frugal Happenings 2/12

Good morning to all my friends!  I hope this finds you well and happy this Sunday morning.
I am well, but I have had quite the blah week.

Our weather has been all over the place.  We have had 4 days this week that there was no heat on all day, doors were open and temperatures were very spring-like.  Tuesday it got to 67* and was sunny - Wednesday we had highs in the 20's and snow!  LOL  It sure has been a crazy winter in Indiana.  Sounds like more of the same this coming week.

My Teegy kitty (outside male) somehow hurt his foot this week.  I am supposing maybe a defending his yard action, and he has pretty much been in seclusion.  He won't let me look at his foot (I can see there are no open wounds), and I would never be able to get him to a vet (he is semi feral) - so I just let him rest.  Poor baby.  He is getting a tad bit more active today.

G got to feeling poorly this week, and had stomach issues.  I have felt like I need to be near by, and I have had to stay quiet, as he has slept  tons.  He is doing better now, and is finally starting to eat again!

I got a phone call on Friday that one of my sweet long time friends passed away suddenly.  I can't imagine not having our "hummingbird sighting" phone calls, and not meandering through her beautiful flower gardens.  She has left a beautiful family, lots of good friends, and a beautiful flower garden for her neighbors to enjoy for years.  Carol worked very hard to beautify her little corner of the world, in a very down trodden area.  It was infectious, and others started following suit in the neighborhood.  She was so active in her church, and worked to feed to homeless.
She left a great legacy - hopefully we can all continue it in our own way.   I feel privileged to have been able to call her my friend.

Not much going on  - so the week was pretty darn frugal.
  • A neighbor threw out a wooden kitchen chair that had a broken seat.  I went and claimed it.  I will repair the seat and paint in a bright color to use as a plant stand in the garden this summer
  • 4 days no heat - air out house
  • Did my own mani and pedi
  • Colored my hair at home with supplies I had on hand
  • I did run to Aldi.  I had another $10/$40 coupon.  I got some fresh items we needed, then used the balance to add back into my long-term pantry.  $32 spent.
  • Haven't fixed many meals this week - so just piecing on this and that.
  • Been re-reading some of my 'living frugal' books this week and watching 'frugal living' YouTube videos
  • Just doing all the normal every day stuff
  • Only left the house one day - so very little gas used
Meals this week:
Super Bowl - wings, pizza rolls, and pickle cheese spread and crackers
Meatloaf, mashed potatoes and homemade biscuits
Meatloaf and oven fries
G sick - so no cooking for 3 days
Chicken noodle soup

My version of PICKLE CHEESE SPREAD
1 - 8 oz. package cream cheese at room temperature.  Dice up 3 dill pickle spears, Chop up 1 - 2 oz. package of chipped beef (or your fav type).  Mix all together and add a dash or two of garlic powder.    Serve with crackers.    YUM!!!!!!
This is definitely a do over!!!  We both loved it.

What have you been up to?
Any good deals or fresh ideas we need to know about?  Check in and say hey!

God bless you all in this coming week.  I appreciate you all so much.
Take care and stay frugal my friends.

    1. Belinda the coupons have come once a week in our weekly newspaper since November. They are only good at area stores or I would be saving and sending them to folks I know!

I don't know why this area has been so blessed.
      Have a good week.

  2. Good morning,
I'm so sorry about your friend's unexpected passing.
We've had a stomach bug so oh home has been very quiet for a few days and thankfully we are better.
The cream cheese, pickle and beef spread sounds good. My son makes a cheese ball with that dried beef. Our commissary had a very good deal on the beef at Christmas and I bought more jars than is reasonable. It a good pantry item but not really an everyday food for us. Your spread sounds delicious! And I have all the ingredients

    1. Thank you for your thoughts.
Glad you are feeling better. G is slowly getting there. So far I have been lucky!

The cheese spread is really good. We have had little cream cheese, beef wrapped pickles on relish plates before - this just puts it all together. It is really yummy.

I still love chipped beef gravy over biscuits or toast. My mom made that when I was a kid.
      Have a great one!

  3. Cheryl, I'm sorry to hear about your friend passing. My hugs to you.
Sorry G was sick but glad to hear he's on the mend.
It's been pretty uneventful here this week too. Still de cluttering sewing room and FB. Still working on the baby afghan, I should have it finished by end of next week if I can do 7 rows at a time.

    1. Laurie - Thank you for your thoughts. I will miss her a lot.
It seems de-cluttering just never ends - I guess it shows what pack rats we really are!

I can't wait to see the afghan. I bet it will be pretty. What a lovely gift.

      Have a great day!

  4. So glad your G is getting better. The grandkids had a bout with the flu this past week. Seems like there is so much of it going around and they are catching everything.
So sorry your friend has passed away. I want to leave a legacy as you described. She sounded so special. I'd better get working on it. Have a great week.

    1. Thanks Vickie. Not sure what was wrong with him - but it wasn't fun.

Yes, to leave a legacy that others want to follow is such an accomplishment.

      Have a great week.

  5. Many regrets that you will be missing your hummingbird friend, and glad that your husband is perking up. Here, my daughter took that spread and put it inside a skinny french bread loaf, wrapped it in plastic, refrigerated it, then sliced it for a Christmas Eve appetizer. It was very good.

  6. I am so sorry for the loss of your dear friend. She sounds like such an amazing woman who brightened the lives of everyone who knew her. ((((((HUGS))))

I am glad your G is feeling better. So much sickness going around isn't there? I think our area has had the worst of it already...at least I am praying so.

    Be blessed!

    1. Patti thank you for your kind thoughts.
I finally got a look at Teegy's foot today and he does have a cut.
He lets me pet him when feeling good, but not pick up. He is sleeping in a bed in a small kennel, so I may end up taking him in the kennel to the vet. We'll see.

      Have a good one.
