Good morning and happy Sunday. Happy Mom's Day to all the moms out there, whether it is to a human or a furry! I hope you all enjoy your day.
It is a beautiful morning here in the city. Yesterday while sitting on the porch, it dawned on me, that you can't even tell we had winter! Everything is so pretty and full of life. Flowers are blooming, trees and grass are green, birds are singing, and all the critters are out and scampering around. Not a single sign of winter.
I have clematis starting to bloom, there are just thousands of buds amongst the 3 climbing rose bushes. That will be a sight for sure. I got to observe the Grosbeak again for a few minutes this week, and I saw a white pigeon! It had a grey stripe down it's back, and it sure was pretty. While on the porch yesterday, I saw my first hummingbird of the season. It came within 5' of me to feed!!!
The tulip poplar tree is starting to bloom - which means a mess. They fall and are covered in little ants. But the squirrels sure enjoy eating those flowers (must be sweet). My allergies are in full force!!!
It looks to be a good week ahead, weather wise. Maybe in the upper 80's by the end of the week!!
I am just enjoying all the gifts of spring and the beauty of nature. It sure is a wonderful gift.My frugal week:
- The house on my west side has yet to trim anything, and I can't stand it! LOL. I hung over the fence and trimmed that entire side of their yard/fence out back - so it won't keep growing through my fence. I also trimmed the section of their front fence and the side of their house that I see looking out my living room window. I guarantee that they didn't even notice.
- I mowed and trimmed my yard
- Got the garden entirely weeded and turned over by hand
- Cleaned the back fence row of all things not flowers!
- Made another bowl of fruit salad to use up a banana and some strawberries that needed used.
- Have been doing lots of laundry - washing all bedding, throw rugs, furniture covers, etc.
- I ran out to feed/plant store and got my plants. I think I have plenty of everything (enough!)
- I received $15 in coupons from feed store to use in Aug. on anything!
- I randomly stopped at a yard sale while out - first of season. I spent a whole .50. I bought 9 new various size new Christmas gift bags for .25 and a holiday apron (gnomes) for .25
- Did the BIG trim of ALL the bushes out back. They got their first major haircut!
- Trying to groundhog 'proof' my yard. There are 2 this year roaming around. I had one visiting a couple days - didn't seem to find anything it liked to eat in my yard (yay). Using mothballs around the shed and deck right now. So far so good.
- Gave another neighbor my old electric weed whacker. One more thing out of garage
- Cooking meals from what I have and using leftovers
- Doing all the normal things
Meals this past week:
Tuna patty, mac n cheese, and cucumber slices
Grilled burritos (used leftover rice/meat)
Cabbage 'steak' with peppers and last of taco meat/rice in a soft wrap
Loaded omelette
Cheeseburger and side salad
Cheesy roasted potato wedges, corn on cob, fresh veggies
Open face chicken and shredded veggie sandwich (yum)
Lots of free exercise this week working outside. Boy these muscles are out of shape after the winter. Each day gets better though. I am just grateful that I can keep doing all these things at my age. Feeling pretty darned blessed.
How was your week? Have you got your garden/bedding plants out yet? My garden goes in this coming week. Did you get any good deals? Give us a shout out and let us know how you are doing.
I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead. May you all stay safe and healthy.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

"Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all." Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.
Proverbs 31:29-31
Dear Lord, again we give thanks for all that we have, all that we can do, and all that has blessed us each one this week. Help these ladies all go forth and be their best selves. Women and moms tend to keep the homes going on a daily basis, and they deserve praise for that. Give each one strength to face all the adverse things that pops up in her way, and a clear head to think and plan. Give us all strength and perseverance. We ask these things in Jesus' name, AMEN
You were a busy bee! A lot accomplished, congratulations. May is my favorite time of the year, I think I said that last week, and it is still true ;). Going on a small vacation next week for my birthday so have been getting ready and cleaning the house so I will not return to tasks. Turning 69 next week! I am not worried about turning 70 but 80 seems like a big number. Cheryl, have a good week, thank you for your blog, it is a peaceful and lovely spot in the world.. Hilogene in Az.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! 70 just sounded unimaginable to me! Now there, it is just another year! Have a lovely time on vacation.
DeleteI would like the house on clean upon return as well.
I keep plugging away, it feels good to get things done.
Thank you so much!
Have a fantastic week.
Happy Mother's Day, a good day to honor all woman. Serviced the garden equipment, tilled the garden & planted 24 hills of potatoes. Some seeds were hard to find at the local store (onion sets, peas) but found them in another town. Have plans to visit 2 garden centers in the coming weeks. Hooked up the cattle waterer & see some fencing repairs needed. Something popped in my left knee walking back from the barn & now I'm gimping along. Not as sore today as it was on Friday. I wish there was an epic story around it but i was just walking! Tensor bandage on it; trust it will mend itself. Hosted a friend for lunch & scrabble. Hosted another 5 friends for the first bbq of the season & cards. We have known each other 50+ yrs; our kids were friends & now some of our grandkids have played together. Truly a legacy. My cousin cut up some trees that had fallen on the fence line & I got some of the branches hauled to the burn pile. There's always something on this rural property. In the kitchen: pork chops w/ onions; cheesy corn risotto; carrot ginger soup; quinoa salad; bbq burgers w/ potato salad. Have a good week.
ReplyDeleteSounds busy at you place. That is a lot of potatoes - good luck. I couldn't find cabbage plants at all - so I guess I will buy it at the store this year!
DeleteSorry your knee gave way. Hate that stuff when it happens. At least a good story would help! Take it easy.
Nice that you got together with old friends. It really feels good to do that. Nice to have the tree cut up.
It seems there is always something to do. Yummy sounding meals.
Have a lovely week.
Proverbs 31 is a favorite of mine. Happy Furbaby Mother's Day to you, Cheryl!
ReplyDeleteI admire you for taking care of your home, inside and out.
Gardening is excellent exercise and the results are good for the soul. We took a Sabbath Day's stroll in the backyard and were grateful that we can, at our ages, still work in the gardens. It was a beautiful day and today looks to be the same. We have an occasional opossum but no groundhogs. Haven't seen any chipmunks for a while.
Your meals always sound so good. We haven't had a cabbage or cauliflower steak for a while. Sounds yummy!
Enjoy your day! Give Bits a snuggle for me.
I do like Proverbs 31 - we should all strive to be Proverb 31 ladies. Thank you - it gets a little harder each year - but slow and steady wins - so far! It does make you thankful.
DeleteI do not mind opossum - they eat a lot of bugs. Haven't seen one for a while.
I hadn't either and had a partial cabbage setting in there and thought it sounded good, and it was!
Thanks. Have a wonderful week.
Another rainy chilly day of Blackberry Winter here, but plenty to do indoors. Yesterday was an all day hymn sing and it was lovely! I hope the weather clears enough this week for me to be outdoors, I'm ready to work outside for sure!
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day to all!
MaryB
Well, one of these days you will be wishing for rain - so I guess we take it when we can. I hope you can get out and so something this week.
DeleteThanks and have a beautiful week.
A much younger church friend once gave me a card with those verses and said I was a Proverbs woman inspiration to her. It was a huge compliment and blessing to me, especially since I did not see myself that way at all. We never know who is watching and learning from us.
ReplyDeleteLots of garden and yard work around here for me also. I was able to get the Mantis tiller going on my own, it hadn't been started in 2 years. Most of my garden is in, although I may have to replant my parsnips.
Was able to get my smaller riding mowing going and mowed around the house yard, son in law usually does all of the property but I really wanted to see if I could get my mower going and I did!
Used my chainsaw and leveled a stump in prep for putting a flower pot on it....looks good and I love the way it turned out.
Lots of potato salad and egg salad along with some lasagna from the freezer. Lots of green salad and last night fried potatoes, onions and a scrambled egg, I added the egg because I cracked it while washing the eggs for boxing. I eat to live not live to eat.
Heavy pollen and allergies so taking my meds and trying to power thru it. But it is Spring and that is a wonderful thing
JC
JC that is right. There is always someone in the background learning from us, we need to be good teachers. The whole Proverbs 31 chapter is lovely.
DeleteGood for you on the tiller. I may try mine tomorrow. I haven't used mine in 2 years either. Yay on the garden being in. You are on a roll - great on the mower. Nice knowing you can do it!
I like those kinds of meals once the weather starts warming and I am busy. Good and easy. I often have no meat in my meals - and I am always fed well and full.
The allergy season is in force. Yes mam, spring has sprung and it is wonderful.
Have a super week.
Happy Furbaby Mother's Day to you! It's coolish here this morning they expect rain later. Going out for dinner against my druthers. It's always to peopley for me on Mother's Day. Have a wonderful Sunday!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I saw the almanac said cooler and wet for your area for this summer! Yikes!
DeleteMost days is too peopley for me - I get it. The restaurants will be packed I bet. I hope you still can enjoy and have a nice NO cooking day!!!
Have a blessed week dear friend.
Hope you're neighbors don't sue you in court for trespass and unauthorized trimming. People there are pretty militant about their "stuff" and lawsuit happy.
ReplyDeleteTheir landlord knows what I do and he approves and appreciates. Not sure why you would even think like that.
DeleteHave a nice week.
I have a degree in criminal justice and worked in the legal field for years. Well known fact that there is an overabundance of litigation in the US, I assumed the residents owned the home.
DeleteToo many lawsuits especially the frivolous ones, are part of the reason insurance rates keep rising.
Assuming gets people in a lot of trouble as well. All the neighbors around here are quite nice and friendly, and everyone loves to help one another.
DeleteI do agree that people sue too often, but there isn't a chance this time.
You sure were busy this week, Cheryl. That was nice of you to trim at the neighbors even if they don’t notice, it’s still a nice thing to do. Sounds like lovely weather there. It’s great to spend time outside and get those muscles pumping after winter time. And you’re getting vitamin d from the sunshine too. You can’t beat that.
ReplyDeleteThanks - it helps everyone out and the landlord appreciates it, as it keeps his property up.
DeleteIt has been beautiful. It is good to get things moving and the winter blahs out of the system. I just love fresh air and sunshine. FREE medicine.
Have a super week.
I have been moving all of the pots with Spring bulbs that have died down into a shaded area and putting pots with Summer flowering plants in them into areas that get sun. I have also been emptying pots that held things which died over the Winter. I am not there yet, but I am getting there. I am suffering with hayfever at the moment, so that doesn't help.
ReplyDeleteIt is a big job for sure. That is a lot of weight. Just keep plugging away. Slow and steady.
DeleteHope you feel better quickly - that is miserable.
Have a lovely week.
You certainly were busy. I was going to plant this week, but according to the long range forecast we will be getting down to 0C or 1C with even lower feels like temperatures. Think I will wait another week.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
So much to do - it kind of creeps us on me! Yes, that would probably be a good idea to wait on planting. Temps will warm and stay that way very soon.
DeleteHave a blessed week.
Your weather sounds a lot different than ours. We're supposed to have rain everyday except Wednesday and Friday we'll be up to 90. not looking forward to that. This weekend was perfect weather and I wish it could just stay that way. Everything always changes though doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteThey change the forecast like we change undies!!! It is different every time I hear it. Now a chance of rain through Thursday and warm and hot by weekend. I think we can almost tell the weather as well as they tell it! It was a gorgeous weekend.
DeleteHave a super week.
You are definitely a go getter! I giggled about you hanging over the fence to trim your neighbors side. A girls gotta do what a girl’s gotta do!
ReplyDeleteLOL - yep. I have enough of my own weeds, don't need theirs!
DeleteSometimes, we just have to take the bull by the horns and get going.
Have a great week.
I spent Saturday helping a neighbor of Sissies with her yard, talk about dirty work, We are 1/2 done. Thank goodness I love yard work.
ReplyDeleteNow my yard needs to be mowed and trimmed!
How sweet of you to help. I like yard work too - but some days it gets to be a lot!
DeleteHave a wonderful week.
Allergies have been horrible! Thanks for mentioning grilled burritos. I want to grill or put my wraps on a griddle. Just forgot about doing them that way until I you mentioned it!
ReplyDeleteOh the allergies seem to be huge this year. Eyes and nose and sneezing, oh my.
DeleteSure, it makes a good meal! Enjoy.
Have a great week.
