Hello everyone. Hope you are all well and safe on this Thursday. It is a soggy morning here. It has rained overnight and still is. YAY, I am sure the garden and flowers are doing their happy dance. I walked out there this morning, and they were standing straight and proud! The second rain barrel is now filling with overflow from the first - all good things.
I just wanted to share a little. Good neighbors are such a blessing for not only individuals but for the neighborhoods. All kind gestures pay it forward in some way, and it makes all smile! I have some of those neighbors.
In the past couple years, I have really gotten to know many of the surrounding neighbors. It all happened when I was dealing with the scary issue next door. It seemed that the universe just came together to protect one of its own. I feel very blessed to know these people.
Many of us ladies, bake or cook, and share our bounty. Seems just about every week one of us is sharing some baked goods with others or a bit of a great casserole. It is pretty neat. Garden harvests get shared all summer long. We all grow different things and share.
We talk and keep an eye on things and each other. We make sure that the neighborhood stays safe.
He was recently donated some treated lumber - as someone knew he does a lot of projects. After gaining permission from a couple homeowners, he used that lumber to make them handrails on their steps. Both are older and have some mobility issues. Above you can see a couple of the handrails. One on the lower steps and one at the upper. These are cemented at the base and will be painted once the wood is ready.
This would have cost these ladies a chunk of change - but it all happened for free. He spent part of 2 days doing this.
I have another neighbor that will mow or help out as needed. He was talking with a lady up at the corner last week, and her home had become surrounded by wild trees and brush growing up on her corner lot. It has been a true eyesore and really a safety issue. She isn't able to manage it and makes limited funds, so it has just kept growing. He volunteered and she said yes - and her front and the entire area of the corner is now clean and free of brush and weeds. He mowed and trimmed too (her normal mower broke his leg), however, he never trimmed or worked on brush - it was more than he could handle as a little person.
The neighbor will work on her deck and backyard in the coming week, and another neighbor has offered to help him. She did pay him to take the brush to the dump.
This is how community should be. Helping those that can't help themselves. Being kind and good to others. Jumping in and being a solution instead of a problem. Taking care of things and keeping the community safe and protected for others. Sharing.
I am glad that I have 'found' these folks. They are just great neighbors. Sure, we have a couple who don't manage to maintain their yards (even though quite capable), but for the most part, it is just lovely now.
Do you have that kind of community? Do you know your neighbors?
I am off to a luncheon today. Wish me luck. It is a longer drive than normal, in an area I am unfamiliar with, and off the beaten path!!! So, here's hoping I find it OK!
Have a wonderful day to all the lovely community we have here!
That's what community is all about. I have neighbors who lend a helping hand when needed. I help where I can, i.e. drove tractor for the neighbor one fall while he fenced; send a supper home to them when I know they've had a busy day (that's why the little was here); painting hive lids with the beekeepers; giving rides to my cousin who doesn't drive. It all works out in the end. One of my purposes is to be of service in my community.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful. That is sure the way it should be in my opinion. One hand helps another, and it all pays forward.
DeleteWe have had some of that kindness here in our little area. Now one of the prime people is moving away to be closer to his work (I guess). I hope the new people will be good neighbors. There has been a lot of upheaval since that hurricane last fall. Even people who weathered the storm ok have had to readjust but many have moved away from our part of the state.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to go anywhere else, this is my home and I want to live the rest of my life here. But it's going to require me to find help with more things - as I get older I won't be able to do so much by myself and my son has his own full time job and family with young children.
Change is the one thing we can count on. :)
Today looks to be a rainy day so I don't need to water the potted plants outdoors (beans, summer squash, and flowers).

There has been a lot of heartache in that area. It is sad to see those people leave and not return. I guess I can understand, but there are problems everywhere. I hope you get good new neighbors. That is always scary not knowing.
DeleteI hear that - I want to stay here as well - it is home. I will keep going myself as long as possible.
Yay for rain.
A solid community is wonderful. That was one of the reasons we left Florida and returned to the Midwest. We're in a rural area with a very good community of like minded people with a strong sense of values.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your lunch today!! It's good sometimes to get out of our comfort zone.
DeleteEven though I am in the city, it has a small community feel here. Rural would be lovely. I am glad you have that great community feel.
DeleteThanks - I have gone over the way there time after time online - I am sure it will be fine. I don't have GPS - so I just keep making notes!
We live on a short street of just 8 houses moving here 2 years ago. We really lucked out with neighbors who help each other. Being the oldest, we do things like watch houses and water for people on vacation. Hubby prunes a bush that straddles our and a neighbors yard. A neighbor just dog sat for us while we were gone a few days. Two neighbors brought me a huge bouquet on my 75th birthday. It is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThose are the things that mean so much. Just watching out for each other - if something looks off - letting someone know. Helping in smaller ways is BIG. What kind neighbors you have gotten! That is wonderful.
DeleteThe is a lovely post about your community! Reminds me of years gone by when people knew their neighbors and were willing to share and help out as needed. The all has to do with loving your neighbor as yourself.
ReplyDeleteThe rain was welcome. The Farmer said we got right at an inch of rain. Too soggy to work outside (still raining) but there are many chores to accomplish inside.
Enjoy your weekend!
Thanks. I feel like we are one of those old-fashioned communities. It is just such a nice group of people. All kindhearted. It says a lot in today's age.
DeleteYes, the rain was welcomed. It rained on me as I started my adventure today for about 15 minutes and then quit. It was clear until I made it almost home - then sprinkles. I was being looked after - I hate driving in rain.
Good neighbours make such a difference! My dear friend once said to me”why are we here, if not to serve others?” That has stayed with me.
ReplyDeleteAMEN - I do believe that is our reason for being on this earth wholeheartedly. Helping in some way - both humans and animals. It also makes life a joy for all.
DeleteYou are blessed to have such neighbors. That is the kind of neighbor I want to be,
ReplyDeleteI am blessed. We all are. Such a nice group of people.
DeleteI moved to my neighborhood over 2 years ago when I retired. I wasn't sure if I was going to stay, but I will now, and I need to integrate more with others in the suburb. There are a lot of elderly people here who are fiercely independent. I have offered help to the 94 year old next door, but she does everything herself.
ReplyDeleteIt took me and others a long time to integrate. Not sure what the tipping point was - but it is really nice. We all do much for ourselves, but we know if needed there is help.
DeleteHope you enjoy your neighborhood.
We know the neighbours to either side and one more (so far). The neighbours on either side of our house are both renters and neither take care of their yards. In fact, my daughter called by-law on the one couple because they allowed the weeds in their yard to grow taller than our fence!
ReplyDeleteBut there are folks in town that are helpful, for example we have a young woman coming to take care of the cats and water the outdoor plants while we'll be on our trip. We'll pay her, of course, but knowing she's handling things while we're away is reassuring.
Glad to know you're getting rain. It would be lovely if you could send some of it our way.
I understand. The couple that don't maintain around here are renters as well - and they REALLY do not maintain. Lots of others that are renters do a fantastic job. I guess it is just the folks. There are some owners that don't do well either.
DeleteNice you found someone trustworthy to help you out. That is great.
We got about an inch - then just drizzle. I wish you could get rain as well.
I love it! We have good neighbors here too that have helped me out a great deal, especially after my Dad passed away. You can’t beat having good neighbors. I love that the retired gentleman put up those hand rails for those ladies. Wonderful blessing for them. 💕
ReplyDeleteI am so happy you have good neighbors. Yes, it is a blessing.
DeleteHe is just the nicest guy - always doing something for someone.
Good neighbours are sometimes hard to find. It sounds like your community is awesome.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
They sure can be hard to find, and one must truly appreciate them, when you get them.
DeleteIt is such a sweet group.
Yes! Our neighborhood is friendly too. People ask us why we don't move now that we are retired, but we don't want to leave our wonderful neighbors. When we get snowed in, everyone comes out to help one another. We get rides. We share weddings and graduations. We love each other's dogs (and cats). OK, we gossip too. But I love them all. So glad you have a neighborhood to be part of too.
ReplyDeleteI love that all those things happen for you. That sounds like a perfect place to be. No need to move when you have such a good comradery. Hey, gossip goes on everywhere, and we look at it as informing!
DeleteIt sounds like you live in a nice, friendly place, which is a real blessing. We know all of our neighbours in our small street of 12 houses and they all look out for each other. It's great to know that we could ask any of them for help if we needed it. We have one couple who never maintain their garden, but it is just a case of long grass and weeds, rather than rubbish or rusting cars and everybody turns a blind eye. It's been like that for the last 35 years, so they aren't going to mend their ways now.
ReplyDeleteI am happy your little area is so good. It sure makes one feel comforted. I agree, it is much easier to tolerate grass and weeds than junk and debris. I see some places when out driving, and just shiver. So much junk around their homes - you can only imagine what else is there!
DeleteWhat a beautiful post. It warms my heart to hear about such a supportive and generous community. Your neighbors sound truly wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThank you and that they are. I am blessed.
DeleteThe neighbor next door has trees growing between his two fences that are 15 ft tall, weeds all over the yard that are six feet tall. We got luck living next door to them. s/ The rest of this street is okay. Neighbors are cordial and sometimes helpful. Tommy has outlasted four guys who have mowed for him for free because he struggled so. The last old neighbor has lung cancer and tumors other places. So, I suppose he is next to go. All we can do is share meals we cook.
ReplyDeleteHe is very independent. So, it is hard to do things for him. But, we do our best. Practical Parsimony
Not a good neighbor for sure. I thought the people moved out of the house and left a mess. Either way - sorry!
DeleteIt is always nice to have people that take care of things and help others. Nice of you to share your meals.
The people with dogs moved out and left the dogs for many months. There is no electricity or water. Refrigerator is full of rotting food. Stinks and has many bugs in house. The other neighbors are either nice or speak to no one. That was the only annoying neighbor.
DeleteThose are really cute houses in the pic! My house looks similar and it was built in 1950 and is 912 sq ft. It is just really flat and kinda swampy here when it rains and we have had monsoon like rains a lot lately. My backw is partially under water. The whole town is like this. Cindy in the South
ReplyDeleteMy house is built like the one on the right. We have about 3 different designs on the street. Built in 1947. Sounds like our homes are similar in a lot of ways.
DeleteSorry about the water out back. Happens here once in a while. Always smells like worms to me!! LOL
Hope it all dries up without damage to anything.
