Weekly Wrap Up 3/22

Hello to all, and welcome to another new week.  I hope this finds you all well and safe and hanging in there.  This morning started out in the low 60's!  It looks like it will probably hit 80* today, then we play on the roller coaster again.  Next couple days will be cooler - but not any stupid cold or snow in the forecast.

Lilly leaves got tinged with the cold earlier in the week. But they will be fine.  Poppies and all the lilies are growing - saw red tips poking out on the peonies.  The daffies really got hit after the cold, but I will be darned, new buds came out and more flowers!!  I have a new vase of them in the house.  It is about time to think of mowing.
My frugal week:
  • Made a pan of corn casserole with items I had on hand.  I have had a craving for that, and it was good
  • Cut more daffodils before the cold - then got a chance to cut more that came out after the cold
  • Lots of walks and picking up trash - saw the first dandelion and wild violets of the season!
  • Pulled big chicken legs from big freezer and cooked up.  Ate a couple and then froze the others cooked for a quick bite later
  • I trimmed the top of my hair, as it was getting so long.  Did a root touch-up as well
  • Paid everything I had on hand
  • Had breakfast/brunch with an old friend.  It starts breakfast and ends up brunch as we talk for so long!  We met at a little diner and meal was filling and inexpensive
  • Scoured out the watering holes and the bird bath again - the robins sure love to take baths!
  • Thorough cleaning of the stove top
  • Removed the secondary quilt from the bed - YAY
  • Stopped at Kroger for some good deals.  Eggs - .99 doz., cheese 1.49/half lb.  Found 80% ground beef on clearance 3.73/lb.  Got 2 pounds (all they had left).  Got more fruit to last the next couple weeks
  • Made hard-boiled eggs - 10
  • Got the older apples out of crisper and plan on making fried apples tomorrow
  • Refurbished some leaf lettuce that had wilted, by placing in ice water - really perked it up
  • Getting to air the house, no heat and used a small fan in bedroom at night, instead of ceiling fan
Meals this past week:
l/o pork loin, corn casserole and fresh veggies
Chicken legs, asparagus, corn casserole
Corned beef hash and scrambled eggs
Chili mac (chili from freezer) and garlic toast
Out for breakfast - diner food - just pieced later at home
Meat, cheese, veggie sandwich on sourdough (like a sub)
Soft tacos
SNACKS fruit, corn casserole, cheese

Mainly just using up and doing things here to keep expenses lower.  There is always plenty to do this time of the year.  House in order, yards in orders, planning gardens - goodness always something.
How was your week?  Any good deals this week?  Getting ready for a new season?
I hope those that were having such nasty weather are doing good.  I wish you all a safe and healthy week.  May you all get to enjoy the beauty of spring.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

I love thee, O Lord, my strength.  The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Psalms 18:1-2

Lord, we sing Your praises today for all the gifts that You give.  As we feel our lives are sad or hard, help us to see all the beauty that is presented each day.  Let us give glory instead of grumbling.  Help us each one to be surprised each day with a bit of beauty or joy.  Have us truly pay attention and be joyful for tiniest of wonders.  AMEN

  1. It is supposed to be warm here today too and I won't complain one bit. The older I get the more I don't care for the cold weather, so the warm really feels good to me these days. Your corn casserole sounds delicious, We really like that here too. Great price on the eggs at Kroger! They have some of the best deals.

    3. Belinda - do not care for the cold either. It is just gorgeous out today and I surely over did it!!! Came in and laid down for a few - my poor back. I love corn casserole and just never make it for myself. My neighbor that moved made the best I ever had - and she used to share.
I agree - I hear people talk about Kroger negatively - but I find them very reasonable and they do have really awesome deals sometimes.
      Have a wonderful week.

    1. Just a little butter in a pan. Peel and core apples - slice like for pie - and sauté in the butter until tender. I usually add a sprinkling of sugar and cinnamon for extra flavor. Good as they are as a dessert or a side (great with pork). Or over ice cream or pudding or pancakes. So yummy. Great way to use up ones that aren't so pretty.
      Have a super week.

  3. I am loving this weather, it is so encouraging. I am still moving last years fallen leaves.
Drying laundry outside, doing yardwork, slowly but that is what it is....
Found a few half-price pks of chicken and ground beef. I only buy meat if it is marked down. I found a pork butt roast 1/2 price and was able to cut it into 3 roasts before freezing.
The girls in the family went to a gardening center, planned our family gardens and bought the seeds and onion sets to get started.
We garden together and process the goods together.
Need to do some spring cleaning but when it is nice out it is hard to stay inside and clean.

    1. I love it too. I was moving leaves today as well. UGH - I think I am about done with leaves! It is all wonderful - with the sun, warmth and breeze. Lots of people out working today.
You sound like me. I get my meat on clearance or super sale only. I get even if I don't need at the time, when it is cheap.
Good going on the meat sale.
How cool to all garden together. That would make it fun and so much more to share. You gals are smart.
I know - it is tough to be inside. I finally had to stop for today - my body aint as young as it used to be!!!!!
      Have a super week.

  4. Excellent devotional! Yes, glory instead of grumbling!! If you're whinin', you ain't shinin'. We need to look for those bits of beauty and joy.

Good bargains at Kroger. I think you have bargain radar...ha!

The warm days without the furnace on are certainly uplifting and give us something to look forward to as the days go on. My daffodils did the same thing as yours, as if they had not be subjected to really cold weather. Even the old-fashioned lilac seems to be fine. I wish the peonies (they're up!) and lilacs would last longer.

Enjoy your day! We're off to Lowe's to get some garden supplies.

    1. I like that - "if you're whinin', you aint shinin'". Sitting here feeling the breeze through the window and listening to the birds singing - joy!
I go early and can usually find some decent deals.
I wish certain flowers lasted longer too. Just a couple weeks isn't enough, especially when they are the ones that smell so great.
I have been enjoying the day working outside. Tired, but it felt good.
      Have a beautiful week.

  5. Enjoy your flowers, Cheryl! We do not have daffodils here. Great price on eggs! (I bought TP on sale - just in case with what is happening in the world!)

Stressful week but I’m making progress on repairs that came up in the inspection report. One minor thing was a partly shattered lightbulb in the attic. I can’t get up there and didn’t know. Handyman I’ve used in the past (not especially reliable) replaced it and didn’t charge me anything!

Temps warmed up but it is still cool at night so I’m using a large afghan on top of my comforter instead of pulling out my blanket again. Works fine.

Received my tax refund and filed the paperwork. Paid my car insurance early.

Cleaned my front door and step of the green oak “crap” that covers everything in Spring. My car is still covered but it will have to wait.

Tried Hoopla streaming service from my library for the first time. Free and great! I can “check out” 8 movies or TV shows a month and there is a good selection, even international shows. I watch through Roku on my TV. Barbara M.

    1. Seriously? No daffodils - I thought they grew about everywhere.
Oh my gosh, you had to replace a lightbulb? That is insane - a new homeowner could do that. I am glad you had someone to help with that.
I get taxes done this coming week.
I am with you on the bed. Removed the extra covers and can throw an afghan over me if necessary.
Neat on the free streaming service. It is always nice to hear people getting extra TV without having to pay. I am about to start researching as cable is getting pretty costly.
Have a super week and I hope the problems are all resolved.

  6. -10C this morning & no sign of daffodils! There was another blustery snowfall on Fri night that required some major shovelling. The neighbor came with his skidsteer to clear the driveway & yard. I did manage to get in a few walks this past week, traversing the ice & snow melt in the yard & driveway & the muddy road. Such is spring in NE Alberta. It was warm enough one day to open the windows to air the house out. Tax prep is done & ready to go to the accountant. There were no increases in monthly utility bills or grocery expense since the previous yr. In fact, everything is slightly less. This proves to me that I can eat well & stay within budget. My relatively frugal ways pay off. The neighbor little stayed one afternoon & we made chocolate chip cookies. Friends & I went to supper & a Gordon Lightfoot tribute concert by Duane Steele, reminding me of what a prolific songwriter Lightfoot was. Bad news - my cousin who suffered an aortic rupture a yr ago has falled & broken a hip, requiring a hip replacement. In the kitchen: cabbage soup; mac & cheese w/ tuna & peas; hot chili dip. Irish soda bread was made in honor of St. Patrick's day. Enjoy your week, Cheryl.

    1. I hate hearing about you gals still being cold. I hope you warm up soon. You are brave to get out in that and walk - I am not that disciplined. At least you got to air out one day!
Good for you on keeping things a little less. That brightens my heart to hear. I sometimes think people don't believe me, when I say it, so glad to see others experience it too. I spent less in the past year on groceries myself. I eat well, just have to be creative.
What a fun evening that must have been - dinner and a concert.
Sorry to hear about your cousin, hope things improve.
      Your meals sound good.
      You have a special week.

  7. Great prices on your groceries especially the ground beef… wow! It is very warm here so heat is off and so is air. I do not think I am going to make it to June 1st on turning the air on. At this rate I will be lucky to make it to May 1st!!! This weekend I have made bbq chicken legs, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, cooking dried pinto beans right now with carrots that needed to be used up, and I earlier made cornmeal mush. I ate the mush with honey and butter. Enjoy a beautiful week!!! Cindy in the South

    1. Thanks, used to be my price was under 1.99/lb. - now if I find it under $4 - it is a deal.
I am not sure when I will turn on AC - it is especially warm for this time of the year - but we are going back to more normal. I will not get excited yet.
      All your goodies sound great.
Thanks - you have a wonderful week.

  8. It is so wonderful to be outdoors in the sunshine working on pick-up-sticks. I'm tired of winter, being indoors, being cold. I wonder how long this joy in warm weather will hold. Probably by July I'll be moaning about being too hot!
Yes yes, thank the Good Lord for these beautiful days. :)

    1. It is wonderful to be outside. I just love the warmer days. Even if it means work - it is better than snow and ice.
I swear every year I won't complain about the heat - not sure I ever make it!
Birds singing, kids playing outside (I love listening to them), flowers starting - all wonderful. JOYS
      Have an awesome week.

Oh I love it. Cream corn, regular corn, Jiffy cornbread mix, sour cream, butter and egg. It is just a very tasty side dish - and uses up things in the pantry.
Loving the sun. Have a special week.

    2. I *love* corn casserole. It makes a pretty decent size dish though, so it takes a while to eat up. Cheryl, do you just eat on it day after day or do you freeze some of it? I've never tried that.
