Hello to all - goodness here, we are with just a week left in the month! Hope this finds everyone well and safe. It is a cloudy morning here. About 65* at the moment. May get to 70* or so today. May has been on the cooler side where April was very warm. Strange weather. May has been wet as well. Today looks to be no exception.
It is 500 Mile Race Day here, and I almost bet it doesn't run the whole race without rain. So many people here wanting to see it - goodness, I hope they get to. Funny, the little town of Speedway becomes the second largest city in the state on this weekend because of all the tourists!!!!
It is also Memorial Day weekend here in the U.S. It is the day week remember all those that gave the ultimate sacrifice over the years for our freedoms. Thank you and prayers for all of the families as well.
My frugal week:
- Cut lots of peonies and roses this week. I have the last 2 vases of peonies in the house. Going to be so sad when I have to be done with them. I just love that smell
- Finished up a gallon of milk on 5/18 that was dated 4/29. Tasted just as fresh as the day it was opened.
- Mowed the front yard - still too wet to get to the back
- Used up the last of the homemade banana ice cream in a smoothie along with some grapes that needed used
- Did several walks when weather permitted
- My former neighbor (moved to KY) came by for a short visit while in town.
- Aired house a lot - no heat, no AC
- Baked a dozen cookies from dough I had in the freezer
- Scoured all the watering holes - cleaned and refilled hummingbird feeders
- Laundry and used dehumidifier water and hung to dry
- Working on gathering things to donate and ended up with a big bag to trash as well
- I did go out and filled the gas tank, and my gas can (good for the summer on mower) for 3.09 gal. using discount
- Stopped at Kroger and got a watermelon (pretty good), grd. beef on clearance for 3.37 lb. (got 3 lbs.). found 15 smaller cans of cat food for .24 ea. on clearance and 6 regular cans for .51 ea. Got TP on sale - bought 2 - 12 packs.
- Paid everything I had on hand
- Harvested my celery plants I was growing. The bottoms were getting nasty looking, so I just harvested all the little stalks and leaves
Meals this past week:
Taco mac bowl
Fried salmon bites and nice salad
Salmon patty sandwich, fries and side salad
Summer sausage, cheese and veggies & crackers plate
Cheesy broccoli, chicken rice skillet
L/O rice skillet and salad
Swiss/onion dbl. burger, baked beans, slaw
SNACKS: various fruit, cookies, beef stick
There you have it - nothing too exciting. Just a nice week. Plan on doing more getting rid of things and hoping to get to mow out sometime soon! It sure needs it.
How was your week? Any good deals? Have you all got those gardens planted yet? I know weather has kept many from getting things in. It will all work out - so have patience.
I hope you all have a lovely long weekend and take a moment to remember why!!!! The celebration isn't really about the race or the picnics - but those who sacrificed everything so we can be free over the decades.
Have a super week ahead and stay safe and hope health finds you all. Prayers of healing for those in need. Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

Lord, we send up our thanks for all the precious gifts we receive each day, and for all our blessings. Help us each one to see all the blessings, even when things look grim - there is always some sunshine behind those things. Prayers for all our military past and present and their families. Prayers that all folks that are out on the roads this weekend will be safe. Please keep everyone in your loving and protective arms. AMEN

I realized I need more dirt for garden bed and some compost, more fertilizer type soil before planting. Just not deep enough fir veg roots. That'll have to wait until son or a daughter can help tomorrow as I can't lift as much. I need a few tomato starts too. I doubt I'd have luck with seeds. No real bargains s other than using up bits and pieces since Im o my feeding myself.
ReplyDeleteHope they get around to help you get the dirt. That can be very heavy. I'd say plants at this point - a little late for starting seeds for plants. Using up is a big savings.
DeleteHave a great week.
Our cool rainy weather is turning to heat. Today we expect to reach a high of 27C/80F and even higher throughout the week ahead. With all the standing water I expect the mosquitoes will be out in full force.
ReplyDeleteIt was too wet yesterday to plant but I'm hoping to get out this morning to start the process.
Enjoy your memorial day.
Glad to see you are finally getting warmer. Hope you get your planting done. I haven't seen a mosquito yet! Probably shouldn't say that!!
DeleteHave a super week.
You find the best prices in ground beef! Even ground turkey isn’t that price here although you can purchase ground chicken for $3.33 a lb.I have never tasted ground chicken, but do like to use ground turkey. I made baked beans from dried beans, potato salad, coleslaw, have a watermelon for this weekend. Yes, you are right about this is the weekend to remember our armed forces members who made the ultimate sacrifice. Have a great week! Cindy in the South
ReplyDeleteI am lucky - right place at right time for clearance! Reg. prices are stupid. Sounds like our minds were thinking the same on food for over the weekend!
DeleteI cannot imagine being that unselfish as to lay your life down for people you don't even know. That is powerful.
Have a special week.
We are having more rain! It's not blowing and fierce, just steady showers. So grateful. Planted the pots of squash and of beans, scattered old flower seeds into two garden beds. Will see what comes up: Four o'clocks, cosmos, nasturtiums, a few shasta daisy seeds. Also 2 packs of foxglove seeds on sale, and scattered them where I have a foxgove volunteer. :)
ReplyDeleteLove the devotional, thank you, it's one of my favorites. I have three music prayers that I can always fall back on: the Doxology, Hodu Ladonai, and Dona Nobis Pacem.
MaryB
Glad you are getting needed rain. It will help those seeds and plants take off. I bet that will all be pretty.
DeleteI love that devotional as well. A favorite here too.
Have a blessed week.
Continuing to "eat down the freezer/pantry". I have a list on the counter of everything that needs to be consumed. Pointed out to hubster "this goes first" list.
ReplyDelete-Just had the final pretzel bun from the freezer with a sausage patty cooked yesterday.
-final pesto cube from 2020 w/penne, shrimp aging in the freezer and fresh asparagus from the CSA. (will repeat today with newer pesto). I tell ya, vac sealing freshly made garden pesto is fabulous. It tasted like I just made it.
-crustless veg quiche from CSA greens
-cooked up the overflowing greens from 2 weeks and have 6 3cup portions frozen/vac sealed for winter
-final cup of crumbs from the bag of pita chips w/bowl of tomato/red pepper soup
-tomorrow will use up cottage cheese remains in a blended protein shake w/chocolate protein powder of course ;-)
Enjoy this new beautiful day we've been gifted. Headed to the high 80s here, 90s tomorrow and plunging to the 60s w/rain Tuesday.
Hi there - good to have you post. You are the queen of use it up!!!!! I love all the wonderful food you are eating, just using the things up that needed to be gone. It all sounds so good.
DeleteCloudy or sunny - it is a beautiful day we have been gifted.
That sounds a bit warm - but then a reprieve!
Have a beautiful week.
The lawn mower & tiller were fixed last wk. The garden has been tilled & planted, only a wk behind schedule. It's a late spring here; the trees aren't even fully leafed out yet. I look out the windows to beautiful fresh green. This morning a bear walked across the hill behind the house. I'm on a mission to clear out the shop. That has been taking up my time. Extraneous items will be donated to the assisted living lodge & further ed for their garage sales. I came across 2 robins' nests this past wk, each containing 4 eggs. The color is so brilliant. I had a visit with my SIL, a dental & massage appt, an afternoon concert with a popular entertainer. We used to shut down his nightclub; now it's an afternoon concert for seniors! In the kitchen: spicy chicken salad; chicken noodle soup; stir fry w/ rice; fried cabbage, garlic mashed potatoes & sausage; carrot cake for a friend's BD celebration next wk. Have a good day, Cheryl & all.
ReplyDeleteGlad the machinery is fixed and the garden is in. Oh goodness, I can't imagine seeing a bear close to home!
DeleteGood for you on clearing out - I think many of us are on a mission. Hopefully it blesses someone else.
Sounds like a good week. I had to chuckle a little when you talked about the concert. I remember those days of closing the clubs - boy, not now!! Afternoons sound perfect.
Food all sounds yummy.
Thanks and you have a great week.
I am curious whether you do laundry with your own homemade laundry soap. I think you and I are a lot alike, and this is something I have done for many years. Have a peaceful day.
ReplyDeleteI do not. I have such a supply that I got for next to nothing with sales, coupons and clearance - that I have never tried making my own. I guess some things, I just get the deals on and don't bother to make. I know many folks that do make it. Maybe someday I will give it a try. Never too old to give it a try!
DeleteHave a special week.
The blessing in Numbers is one of my favorites! We definitely need to hold up our military personnel in prayer, as well as their families.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like rain could arrive at any moment. Hope it stays away from 16th and Georgetown!
You had a variety of activities this week. Don't count on mowing your backyard any time soon. Soggy weather! Think I'll go out and spread a few bags of mulch before it rains. If the rain holds off, I'll do a little weeding.
See you on Tuesday!
I love that too - a favorite of mine.
DeleteIt is cloudy, I keep watching the maps and hoping it stays clear at the track for a bit. It looks north.
The grass is getting long - but I just don't want to try as damp as it is. I may have to do it a couple times. I have already been out pulling some weeds and cutting stuff out of the back fence. I had a couple kitties watching as an audience!
Have a wonderful week.
Have a wonderful weekend, Cheryl!
ReplyDeleteThank you dear and you as well. I am sure you will be with family.
DeleteHave an awesome week.
