He was curious about how the contents would look after 30 years, so he opened them up on his video. Most of the food inside looked like it normally would and he said they smelled fine. So yes, those dates on cans are arbitrary as the food is still good past those dates. And yes, we have priced vanilla lately. It's unreal and the reason I'm using imitation right now. I figure if I stock up on those items as well I will not have to worry about running out. I am stocking up on beans, rice, flour, sugar and other basics so I can make whatever I need from storage. I have 4 turkeys bought at 29 cents a pound after Christmas I want to try canning. I have never canned meat before but I think it's about time to try.
