Frugal Happenings 4/9

Good morning.  Hope this finds each and everyone well and happy.  I hope each one of you enjoys and celebrates this Palm Sunday in their own special way.

The week has been pretty quiet in this part of the world.  We started the week with decent spring weather, then we got pouring rain,  winds that only Dorothy and Toto could appreciate, and colder temps and frost.  Today is supposed to get close to 80*!!!!  Crazy, mixed up weather for sure.  I guess that is what spring is all about.
I am more than ready for it to even out and stay warm!  This next week looks like it will be in the 60's each day and warmer nights!  Here's hoping.

My week:
  • I mowed the yard (need to do again) and I am still using fuel from last season.  I think I have one more mow then I have to buy more fuel
  • Been using the Soda Stream to make flavored and carbonated waters
  • Watching prepping videos on You Tube (on rainy days)
  • Hardly ever turn lights on any more.  It is light early and stays light till about 8:30 in the evening, and by then I am watching TV and don't need lights
  • Got to air out house a lot - little heat used
  • Picked a bouquet of tulips and hyacinths
  • Looking up some new recipes
  • Restocked the canned cat food shelves with stock I had put back.  We currently have 3 - 4 months of canned cat food.  Need to work on a bigger stockpile for them.
  • Went out to lunch with my siblings on Wednesday - all for FREE (GCs).  It was lovely and good therapy.
  • Kept the wax bag from cereal.  Will use for freezer foods.
  • Renewed library books on line
  • Cooked a dozen hard boiled eggs for easy, quick breakfasts or snacks
  • Ran to Kroger on Friday.  I got milk for 1.29/gal.  10 lbs. of potatoes - 5 lb./.99.  18 count eggs for .99.
  • Lunch date and Kroger visit are the only places I went this week.  Staying home is cheapest for me!
  • Doing all the regular stuff - brewing tea, filtering water, making flavored coffee, laundry in cold, cooking from scratch, etc.
Meals this week:
Homemade stew (2X)
Chicken breast, dressing and green beans (from freezer)
Grilled cheese with leftover beans (had big lunch)
Potato/cheese/ham casserole and salad
Baked fish and mac n cheese w/diced tomatoes added (G' favorite)
Homemade sub sandwiches
**********************************************************

It has just been pretty quiet here.  I have spent rainy days trying to learn some new ideas, recipes and tips that may benefit us all.  Hope to share some soon.
I am more than ready to get outside and dig in the soil, and get the garden area prepped.  I won't be planting too much for a good month or so.  You just never know what the weather can do in Indiana in April and early May.

How was your week?  Did you find any great deals?  Do anything to add to your prepping storage?
Stop by and visit and let us know what you have been up to.

STAY FRUGAL MY FRIENDS AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU IN EVERY WAY!

  1. Hi Cheryl, I enjoy watching YouTube videos too. They are much more real than TV.

Our Walmart has a clearance aisle that I always check when I visit. This week they had bed sheet sets. They were most all marked $5 or $7 and they had lots. I got one set for us for our storage and one set for my parents. My parents were thrilled. They needed an extra set and Mom had been online shopping for some but they are just so expensive. She and Dad were both thrilled and very happy with their $7 set.

I'm impressed you have such a stockpile of pet food. I'm sure lots of people don't think to do that.

    1. WOW on the price of the sheets!!!! What a blessing to have found that deal. I think I would have been buying Christmas presents! LOL

Oh my, me and my fur babies. I could never forget to stock up for them! I do think a lot of people forget to do that - I think you are right.
      Have a great one.

  2. This past week has been very windy and overcast. It's supposed to be autumn and cooling down but that just doesn't seem to be happening.
I was given some bananas that ripened quicker than we could eat them. I ended up making banoffee tarts, banoffee cake and plain old banana cake. The banana cake went in the freezer, the tarts lasted till dessert and when I pulled the caketin out of the fridge to cut up banoffee cake for dessert last night, there was a good bit of that gone too, Three adults and one Jack Russell and no one had had any cake. Hmmmm!
I baked up a herb and olive sourdough loaf last night. We had roast chicken and vegetables and then any holes were filled with the loaf. It is simply delicious.
I got on my trike, with the fur baby in the basket on the back and went to the beach a couple of times. This was my only outing(other than the Dentist and we wont talk about that) all week.
I did clean out the pantry last week and found some things that had been forgotten. They are now at the front to be used up and not wasted. We have a very small shopping list as a result of all the finds.
I'm off to the Library to stock up on some good books and DVDs for the next week.

    1. Jane it sound like you had a great week. Your baking sounds so good.
The thought of biking to the beach sounds heavenly. It would be lovely to live close to the water.

Good job on cleaning the pantry and getting things up and front to use.
      Have a great week!

  3. Your already mowing the lawn...we are sill just a few weeks away from that. I figured though you must be close to us with the weather you have. That's neat that you haven't had to buy fuel yet. I watched a youtube video last night after reading you do this and wrote down some things he said. It was about foraging. I'm going to try to do this a couple of times a week.
    Have a great day

    1. Vickie - oh yes the grass has grown so much due to all the rain we have had. Then temps warm up, and that stuff grows and grows!

I love You Tube. I have only recently discovered that. There is a video on just about anything you can think of. Very informative.
      Blessing

  4. Cheryl, Your week sounds lovely.
Now my week not so much. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a whirlwind.
A friend posted pictures of a bathroom redo her son had done and we loved it. So we called and he came out the next day and my house has been upside down since Thursday. But it's pretty much a DIY redo. No contractor. Jer is trying to get established on his own and he's very reasonably priced so we can afford him. And he's fast. So I am pleased to have it done.
All meals from home and still working on my afghan.

    1. Laurie that is so nice that you are helping to give the guy a start at his business along with getting your bath remodeled. Good for you.
It is amazing how much mess a little project can make!
I bet the afghan is lovely!
      Have a wonderful week.

  5. Hi Cheryl, the weather has been crazy everywhere it seems. I woke up to snow, next came sun, then rain, then sun and wind and then hail...this all within about 12 hours! Our lawn also needs mowing but it squishes because it is so waterlogged at the moment. I am enjoying how green it is though. ;) I'm so glad you were able to have lunch with your siblings this past week. What a blessing that is! I'm hoping to see one of my brothers in May or June and then again in September. Time spent with family that you love is priceless isn't it? :) Be blessed!
