Weekly Wrap-Up 3/12

Happy Sunday to all.  It is snowing here at the moment!  Nothing much - just flurries and it will melt before the end of the day.  We started the week warm again - and then come Friday it went bust AGAIN!  It seems every Friday, for the past month and a half - the weather has decided to belch upon us!!!!!  UGH
Oh well - it is still that time of the year.  Yes, things are coming back to life - but we shouldn't get too excited.  There will still be plenty winter ahead, I betcha!

Some pretties I cut before they froze.  There are so many outside yet!

It has been pretty quiet here again this week.  I need to light a fire under my bum - I just feel blah when it gets back all icky after some nice days.

My week:
  • I rotated my mattress - top to bottom.  That needed to be done for a long while
  • Tons of laundry.  Did all the bedding, throw rugs and also winter jackets and coats
  • Used very old apples and made an apple crisp
  • Worked out in the yard a lot the first of week.  I cleared a lot more from flower beds, raked up gunk, and moved a lot of the yard decorations to new places.  Have several pots set aside that are bad - to use for drainage/dirt in new pots this spring
  • Got to air the house a couple days - even got my flip-flops out and wore them!!!!!
  • Picked a bouquet
  • Got a call that Fluffy's cremains were back - so went and picked her up
  • I made the sherbet with the orange soda and sweetened milk.  YUM!  I just had 2 cans and it called for a liter of liquid, so I added a cup of orange juice as well.  It tastes soooooo good!  It isn't as smooth and creamy as store bought - more crystalized.  But it sure is tasty!
  • Used leftovers in new ways
  • Just doing general cleaning, dusting and vacuuming - piddling around the house - nothing big
Meals this week:
Leftover stuffed shells and side of fresh veggies
Deluxe cheeseburger
Meatballs with peppers/zucchini/gravy over rice
Dirty rice, chicken and fish bites
Pizza style hand pies
Leftover rice with added shredded beef (freezer) and beans added
Burrito supreme and side salad

I really loved the warm sunny days we had.  I realize how lucky we are here, as so many are still covered up with ice and snow.  Those in CA are just being inundated with rain and snow - so much after such a long and huge drought.  Another, be careful what you wish for!
I hope you are all well and safe.

Give us a shout out and tell us what you have been up to this week.  I love hearing about everyone's adventures and bargains!

Have a wonderful week again.
Blessings to you and yours from my humble little home.
******************

Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9

Lord, Thank You for being with us every moment of every day.  Help us to realize that all the worry in the world, changes nothing for us.  You have us in Your hands, and You will guide us through this life.
Amen

  1. Sounds like a pretty nice week Cheryl! When I was going through Confirmation we had to pick a verse that would be our touchstone and I chose Joshua 1:9. It has served me well throughout my life. Have a great Sunday.

    1. It was a nice yet somewhat quiet week.
It is such a perfect verse - it just says it all in my opinion.
      Have a great week.

  2. Hubby and I are on the road for a weight lifting event he will be in. He is in the 80 age group now! So, traveling from Florida to Pennsylvania. Should be home next Friday.

I do like that verse so much. So helpful for getting through every day and the unknowns we face.

Will you scatter Fluffy's ashes? Hugs.

I like it as well - it says it all.
I will have her ashes along with the others - someday to go with me when I go! Orders have been given! LOL
At least that is my plan.
Safe travels - have a great week.

  3. Relatively quiet week here. No daffodils in sight with temps still in the -10-20C range. We celebrated my cousin's last day of work after 44 yrs. What makes it even more memorable is that she never thought she would live to see her retirement given her health issues. After a kidney transplant & open heart surgery, she can now enjoy her retirement. I watched the movie, "Women Talking". The movie elicited emotions that I hadn't experienced when I read the book of the same name by Miriam Toews. One of the characters spoke of the worst outcome of the abuse they suffered - they quit believing in themselves. The movies is nominated for best adapted screenplay at the Oscar's. I'm scrapbooking pictures for my granddaughter's upcoming 13th birthday. Meals this week: hamburger crumble w/ sauteed zucchini, soft tacos, black bean tortilla soup. Baked an apple walnut loaf. And that's a wrap.

    1. Brrrrr. How nice for your cousin. The Lord works in mysterious ways we will never understand. So happy she has her health now and can enjoy retirement.
      Sounds like an interesting movie.
Fun on the scrapbooking - is it for a gift or just a picture board for all to enjoy?
Meals sound right up my alley!
Have a fantastic week. Stay warm.

  4. As you saw, we had snow yesterday, and today woke up to cold weather. It's not supposed to last and by Tuesday we may be above freezing. I can tell you I'm looking forward to that.
I remember turning my mattress, actually flipping it over, but now with the pillow top it can only be turned end to end.
Hope the temperatures improve quickly for you.

    1. I sure hope you get some warmer temps and that they stay!!!! Ours go up and down each week. It won't be too bad this week - just cold nights. Flurries are done and melted already today.
I would have like to flipped it over - but too much for me to do. End to end had to do!
      Have a great week.

  5. What beautiful daffodils, Cheryl! Hope the snow flurries today don't affect those remaining in your yard. We've had a mild, dry week; all of the last snows melted and the mud and puddles dried up. We can still get snow through April. Even into early May. If last year is an indication, June will bring fierce heat before monsoon season starts. To every time there is a season.

Not really a quiet week here. I don't expect that for awhile. BUT I enjoyed watching the sunrise 3 days this week, including today. Our meals included meatloaf w/rice & veggies (twice), bologna sandwiches, and...I forget. Days are a blur lately. Bargains were the steaks and chicken (already sorted & frozen), apples, blueberries and oranges. GOOD news is (almost a year later), we received a decent check in the mail as an escrow rebate.

I want to apologize if I've been over-sharing about BIL. The sheer amount of stuff is unlike anything I've seen in my life. There's been a huge lesson in all of this for me. For that, I'm grateful. Thank you--as always--for the verse and prayer today. May you and all of your readers be blessed in the coming week.

I need a bologna and tomato sandwich!!!!! I love them in the summer. Now my mind is thinking of that! LOL
YAY on the check. Better late than never.
No problem - you need a place to vent. This is it and that is fine with me. I can't imagine having all that stuff and moving it, and then having to store it. How you have managed to keep your cool is beyond me!
      Have a great week.

    2. Oh, I'm no saint, Cheryl, but as long as he doesn't try to fill my house, I'm alright. Last week I shared with him about the many times over the years I had to part with things I hated to part with. Sometimes due to a serious financial pinch (pawned my original wedding set when we bought our 1st house w/unexpected closing costs), or downsizing before moves. Told him I survived; in the end, it's just stuff. When the movers held the truckload of our belongings hostage in CA last year, and I wasn't sure if we'd see any of it again, the only things that truly bothered me were photographs and memories. Then reminded myself of all those who lose everything in fires, landslides, hurricanes and tornados. And in the end, the only thing we take with us is our soul. But I like stuff as much as the next person. Especially shiny stuff. LOL! God is at work. If we're not learning, we're not growing.
      Hugs to you. --Elise

    3. Elise, I did not notice you over-sharing at all on that, I think we all can relate and understand the struggle. It's so, so nice that people can share here. I know how you feel, we've had rough times and I've lost things too. I so get that...

Elise, now I'm craving a bologna sandwich!! My family camped a lot and the long vacation was usually in one of Sierra national parks. After a day of swimming, nothing tasted better than a bologna sandwich with mustard and Lay's potato chips!! In honor of that happy memory, I choose an August day for bologna day! Just once a year.

As for your BIL, I've heard no griping, but I am being reminded that you can't keep everything! I've been thinning the house for awhile now. When we lived in the Cali foothills, a fire evacuation made me realize that. The fire dept gave me about a 15 minute warning. I immediately put the pets and meds into my truck. I went back for 3 days of clothing and grabbed our oldest pictures. Adrenaline got that done with plenty of time to spare. I debated what else to grab when the neighbor's dog barked. They were not home so I was prepared to jump the wall to get her. And know that I did not care for them at all! I was on my patio chair plotting my landing when she came flying in. Then I just sat in my truck and watched the fireman for a signal. Important items in 15 minutes. It's not to say I wouldn't be sad over some things, but a Ford Ranger just wasn't that big! My babies trumped everything!

    5. Thank you, Amelia and Debby. Most people have had to make hard choices at one point or another in their lives. For my BIL, this *is* his first rodeo. I'd so hoped 2023 would be a "settling down", quiet year.

By the way, Debby, I love my bologna sandwiches the same way. Just had a hankering this week. Thankfully, bologna is the cheapest lunchmeat by far. :-)

    6. Everyone agrees Elis - it is motivating us.
DEBBY - that is a great reminder about what is important. Fire is the scariest thing in the world to me - but I have thought about what I would grab. It is amazing the things we truly would want. People and pets trump everything for sure. Thanks for that reminder.
      Have a good week.

I forgot to add that our fire crew stopped it in time so we had no damage. To our house, at least. It probably took me a couple of days to lose the adrenaline shakes!! And then we all ended up with sinus type infection. The doggy got it first, then the cats, then us. Expensive, but easier to deal with!

  6. We're having rain - it's not very heavy but it knocks the daffodils about a good bit anyway. And it's quite chilly. The freezing rain did not materialize, thank heaven. :)

Elise, I have not found your posts about BIL overkill. We all need to pay attention to any hoarding behaviours we might have and try to think about those who have to clean up our mess afterwards. I've worked in that field and it is eye-opening. I need once more to purge stuff, cull stuff here. There's too much of everything. But there is a fine line between weeding the house and getting rid of things that make "our house" into "our home". Tricky. I don't think any of us want to live in a motel-room environment! :D

    1. Glad you did not get freezing rain! The rain always seems to come when flowers start blooming and then knocks them down for us. :(
I agree with what you said to Elis. I know reading about her BIL has given me more incentive to get things gone!!!! Yep, we all have too much - even after forever decluttering. I mean how much do we need? If it is stored away and in a closet or box - we aren't using it - sooooooo bye-bye!!! I am finally getting that!
      Have a fantastic week!

    2. MaryB, do you ever wonder if the attachment to things is about something else altogether? Watching the Hoarders shows was insightful to me. Something usually triggers it. Hubs and I have no idea what triggered his folks... what lead to cases of MREs, pallets of paper products, 7 sofas, as many recliners, 20+ end tables, countless air purifiers, more tools than a hardware store, etc. And I've had a sinking spell, because I caught grief from them for decades. Had I known this was going on, I'd have had much more solid footing defending myself. Thank you for understanding. --Elise

  8. We had snow this week, quite a lot for us, but it's gone now. However, the Met Office (government agency responsible for weather forecast) says that our minimum temperature today will be 9 Celsius, about 49F and we still have a yellow warning in force for snow and ice today! I can't get my brain around that one.
I did venture into a supermarket this week and there were veggies, no eggs though and given the whole avian flu hoo ha I think that will be the case for a long while.
Not much else to report really, it's been very quiet here and long may it remain that way.

  11. Note to self. Flip the mattress. After reading about EMs BIL, I have decided I need to declutter. So far it's just a few items per week, BUT, if I gave away a few things each week, it WOULD make a difference. So see, it wasn't over sharing, it was inspirational!
So far, I'm tackling a cupboard at a time, went through the collection of plastic bags, and got the chickadees Legos organized so they will be inspired to build. I was inspired to build too! I didn't have Legos as a kid. Who says they are just for kids?
    Great Scripture, thank you, Cheryl.

    1. We seem to be in a near constant state of decluttering, Ellie. I try to drop off a donation to a local charity every month. With all the food BIL brought (as in HUGE bulk), and with his permission, a local senior community regularly asks for food donations in the paper and can have a windfall. --Elise

Elise - that is a great stock on food items. You should be set for a long while! Some good comes out of all this!

    4. I can't keep it all, Cheryl. The flour is in 25 lb. paper bags. Right now the 3 bags are in flat, airtight bins in the linen closet. Once open, all 25 lbs. per bag would have to be put in airtight containers and stored in a cool place, plus can you imagine the enormous mess of trying to get the flour separated into smaller containers? I don't go through a regular bag of sugar in a year, let alone a 5 gallon bucket; they're in the outdoor shed for now. And the 4, 2 lb. bags of brown sugar are in the clear, big bag he brought them in on the dresser in the guest room. Along with cases of canned goods I have no space for. It's too much for two little old people. Even three of us. Even if we gave some to our nearby son, it's more than we could possibly use in several years. If BIL wants to keep it for his (eventual) own place, we'll figure something out in the meantime. I think it would be a big blessing to a senior community, or the Indian school, or a charitable organization that feeds the homeless. But that's just my humble opinion. --Elise

  12. Beautiful scripture and prayers...yes ma'am. Amen and I plan on meditating on those words this week. : )

Last week? I did some big baked potatoes and a green on the side...Some eggplant like my Italian grandma from Naples made, no cheese on ours, just the sprinkle kind that hubs uses and pasta gravy, eggplant is oven fried in olive oil. Served with gf pasta. I made some veggie chikn nuggets and tater tots with turnip greens. We had pizza night, served broccoli and some corn on the side. Then some cold mandarin 'little' oranges and skinny pop popcorn from Sam's for a later night snack a few times this week. Oranges and then popcorn...it works. It's good!

I make hibiscus - peach tea iced to sip on throughout the day. I snack on cherub tomatoes and carrots and hummus too. Plus leftover or a little sandwich for lunch.

I've been sewing a lightweight lawn cotton skirt and top set so I can enjoy that soon, I need to altar a couple of maxi dresses too this week. Still decluttering and giving stuff away and will soon halt that to clean up for Easter holidays. Finally put my two little white lit trees up and replaced them with a little spring tree from Hobby Lobby (a big branch! ; ) and a little doggy lamp that stays out.

This week we will be taking our little rescued blind poodle to the vet for spaying and perhaps a tooth removal? She has a hernia that he may stitch too...I dunno. That poor little angel...

I do feel overwhelmed with decluttering -I grew up with depression era parents and grandparents and hubs and I -we had little or no money with hubs self employed so it can be difficult for me but if my "container" can't fit stuff and I don't love it? It will go to bless someone else. I'm weary of stuff overtaking things, I'm not a hoarder but sick of decluttering. lol

I did plant some stuff this week too, a few flowers so that was nice.

Enjoyed reading what you've been up to, wow, that must be a very strange feeling to receive Fluffy's ashes. Very sweet and poignant are your plans, how wonderful. Prayers for a sweet week for all.

  15. This past week I started tomato seedlings to join other seedlings previously sown. The weather is teasing me, melting the snow, only to snow some more. It knows I am looking forward to being in the garden again. I've gone back to making cold tea to have as an alternative to water for drinking as I only drink my cup of coffee in the mornings. I enjoy Christian radio programs (non music) most days Monday thru Friday as I crochet or work on other projects. YouTube also has Sunday services, teaching, and Christian music. I've enjoyed utilizing these resources. I have had a really hard time getting into a walking/exercise routine again. So, after talking with family that has had success with it, I joined an online walking challenge. Knowing that I spent money on this is instigating me to not miss my daily walk. 17. We are still rainy and cool here in the PNW. The weatherman was actually saying maybe a snowy mix for Monday morning. We had heavy hail yesterday and Friday was windy but I will take our wind over what I am seeing on TV anyday. I have already been sewing Kennel Quilts for Mississippi and expect I will receive four more requests this week. The Quilt Pattern Magazine sends out the requests to quilters after major events. In the last month it has been MS, CA, LA, KY, TN and OK. Since I have plenty of fabric and lots of batting that gets cut off the edges of quilts after they are quilted I sew up about six kennel quilts and mail them out. All it really costs me out of pocket is postage as I have all the supplies. Often times pets end up in shelters and have to be kept in small kennels until they can be reunited with family or be sent elsewhere. The kennel quilts make the stay a little more comfortable. I used to make them using orphan blocks or piece something special but I have been making so many more now it is pretty much slap two pieces of fabric together with batting in the middle and put a bit of quilting in them, so I can get them out the door.
