Happy Thursday to you all. Woke to cooler temps this morning (50*) and a sunny and breezy day. It is just lovely.
This weekend is a long holiday weekend here in the U.S. Many people make big plans. Some folks have cookouts and parties, there will be many graduations this weekend, Many will be watching and listening to the 500 Mile race on Sunday. Others will make visits to the cemeteries to pay respect to those that have gone on.
Memorial Day is a lot of things to a lot of people - but it should always be solemnly remembered as a day to honor and respect those Veterans that have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.
What have you got planned? Is your family getting together?
I think my weekend will be pretty much like all the others!!!!!! I am not a big race fan - despite that being the thing my city is famous for. I don't plan on going to any cookouts. I will work around the house and yard and maybe catch up on some programs I have recorded. I will continue to air the house - loving this weather for that.
Hmmmm - I may make myself a steak filet this weekend. You guys keep mentioning steak, and for some reason that sounds good to me. I will probably chop on this head of hair of mine - oh my, it has grown so much. It is driving me nuts!
Maybe sit on a lawn chair and read a book. Maybe porch sitting. Who knows. I just know I will be doing whatever here!!!
What are you all doing?
I bet some will be gardening - either getting the first plants out or just finishing up.
Tell what you have going on - it may give some of us some new ideas.
Whatever you do - be safe. There will be even more crazies out than normal. Stay healthy - always remember safe practices with your picnic foods.
Maybe take a moment to say a special 'thanks' for all those that have sacrificed for us and their families.
Remember and enjoy yourself as well.

We had our long weekend last weekend, in remembrance of Victoria Day. Our Remembrance Day is held in November - it would be nice to have it in May as the weather is often quite cold.
ReplyDeleteThe long weekend is May is the start of camping/cottage season. It is also when most people plant their flowers and gardens.
Enjoy your weekend doing what you enjoy most.
There will be parades and such this weekend and ceremonies at different cemeteries - so yes, the nice weather does help.

ReplyDeleteHere at my new home, it will be a long productive weekend. No plans at all other than unpacking the pile of boxes to be delivered tomorrow. A girlfriend is coming over Saturday to help me unpack critical kitchen items ;). It will be wonderful to sit in a chair again! Thank you for the reminder of the whole point of this weekend, and while my husband survived his time at war, I will go to the cemetery to have a visit with him. Hope your weather is good this weekend, hilogene in Az.
Glad you friend is coming to help. Things always go a little quicker when one has a helper!!! Hope you get all settled and get to set and rest a bit as well.

This weekend is the Boatnik festivities here. They have a carnival and Jet boat races on the Rogue River.The 2023 North American Jet Boat Championship. Hubby is a fan so we will be going to the river to watch. There is also a parade in downtown so we will go to that also. Other than that I think it will be a quiet weekend here.
ReplyDeleteWe have been working in the yard pulling those weeds! Lots of them. What a sad day it was yesterday in the passing of Tina Turner. It's just been weighing on my mind the passing of so many entertainers that I grew up with in my lifetime.

Tomorrow is my 46th anniversary. My husband and I are going away to a small town with lots of antique stores. Then on Saturday we will be attending my brother's memorial. He passed on April 17 and we are finally laying him to rest. I am his only living heir and he did not have a will so we have been dealing with a mess.

Our Memorial Day weekend will be... probably more work in the house/yard and some grilling on Sunday and (maybe) Monday when son and BIL come over. It's been a busy, busy week. I did get some of the Basha's deals yesterday, including the ground round for $2.47 lb., plus Wonder burger and hot dog buns at 2/$5. Already had the hot dogs. Might make some pasta salad to go with. We forgot to get the seedless watermelon at 19 cents lb., so I might have son pick that up. BIL is still in an empty house; I'll have him bring his own soda and maybe some chips. Phoenix relatives should be here in a week... they'll be in an RV at his place, but might be eating here a lot. Thank goodness I have plenty of food! LOL!

We have two birthdays in our family today. Our granddaughter entered the teen years and her great aunt who has the same birthday is coming from out of town to celebrate. We will have a BBQ on Saturday. Having it Saturday means my SIL can head home on Sunday before the traffic starts on Monday. She is actually coming into town today to see another grandchild in a play today. It will be a very busy few days and I will need to rest on Monday! Nancy in Vancouver, WA

Picked out new glasses this morning. Plastic fronts in lilac & blue with pewter colored metal temples. I think with nose pads they will stay on my face. I like them much better than anything else I saw. The Dr. said the cataract surgery can wait until next year. My right eye isn't ready yet anyway.
ReplyDeleteWill be cleaning up the front flower bed this afternoon. We are having a cool, windy day; good for working hard. After it gets down to 45F tonight, I will plant bell peppers and bush beans tomorrow along with the broccoli I started from a purchased head. Laundry and mowing Saturday. Sunday is always helping Husband take a shower. My ancestors are all buried in KS, so no graves to decorate, though we always did that when I was a kid.
Supposed to get up into the mid-80s here for a few days next week. Saw in the paper that our electric rates are going up over 20% next month. Husband is always cold, so we will be using the A/C sparingly anyway. It will be good weather for scrubbing the house siding.
Prayers for all who will be traveling and having guests this weekend. Hope everyone has a good time!

YAY - on the new frames! Those sound pretty. The ones I got were metal frames with nose pads - but the metal is kind of pink. Something different is always kind of fun.

We're hitting 80 now, Frances. Unfortunately, I'm the opposite of your husband and plump like a Ball Park Frank in the heat. Fortunately, mornings and evenings are cool and breezy so we can open windows then and use the a/c more sparingly, but with the solar system now, our bill is like $16.

DeleteHappy Memorial Day...my hubby is a veteran of the Viet Nam war (USMC) but fortunately came home in one piece. I don't think any of our relatives died in wars, even though many generations served in them. We do feel grateful for those who served and gave their lives for our country. Very sobering. My husband lost many friends in that war, however.

ReplyDeleteDaylily Alert! My Stella de Oro's have their first blooms opening up and lots of buds. The Miss Kim (Korean) lilacs are also staring to bloom. Given several shrubs (Spirea) planted by the patio late last summer are limping along, we went to the garden center at Walmart. Guess what I found? A new shipment of big, beautiful Stellas in bloom and bud! It will be a gardening kind of weekend here. Did I mention I LOVE daylilies?
ReplyDeleteBefore that, we went to drop off a whole bunch of donations at Hopeful Treasures thrift shop. Inside was free Dominos Pizza, cheesy bread and wings for the taking. Dinner tonight! But more important, I found two more oil paintings. Total: $8. They're very well done and in linen lined, solid wood frames that retail for $100+. Feeling pretty darned good this afternoon. --Elise

We have two son's families coming into the lake house for the weekend. The forecast is for 90 percent chance of rain and chilly all weekend. Not what we had hoped for! But, it will still be a joy to squeeze our youngest three grandkids.

DeleteYes, a very special and touching day for our family. When our daughters were little I would take them to the courthouse and watch the ceremony and then our little girls would go up to the elderly vets with their homemade little construction paper booklets in red, white and blue with patriotic stickers and have the elderly vets sign their little booklets held in their little hands...Oh it was the sweetest thing ever. Our oldest daughter was able to assist with the Pearl Harbor 75th anniversary several years ago in Pearl Harbor, sooooo special. Oh my heart. We love our vets and I tell them so when I see them in their hats. My dad was a first class military guy, he and his big brother went to Gulfport Military academy in Mississippi where he was captain in highschool. (Oh the stories!) They are pretty funny too...My dad was a first class guy but quite a character I might say! lol
ReplyDeleteWe'll have a normal weekend, probably hepa vaccing our home and cleaning up a bit from the mold report. Youngest daughter is here and thriving and no drama it seems from that lad. So prayers answered thank God. Poor kid, (she's an adult) but the youngest never the less, she had to be rushed to a dentist two hours away with me in the car and her driving to get a tooth pulled. Very difficult situation. God bless'er. She's had a difficult year, I'm so glad she's here too at least for now, thank you for your prayers on that and the mold situation.
Monday on Memorial Day our three married daughters and husbands with grandchildren will be here along with our single daughter here, so I definitely have my work cut out for me. I will be playing the old movie, 'Best Years of Our Lives' in the background Monday. I highly recommend that one, it's been said by a military higher up from the era that it's the most true to life movie on what the WWII soldiers felt when they came home. Beautiful music score too. I have lentil burger patties I made last week so will pull those out and we sha'll see. what we sha'll see.
I have the movie on dvd but it's also on youtube in entirety with a few commercials and probably other stations such as pluto or tubi etc.
Take care Cheryl, it sounds like you are going to be keeping busy like me. It's a special week indeed and it's so very good to hear you express those feelings. I hear an airplane above...And I think of my daddy. Life is tough sometimes.

My favorite things about the festivities in our city this weekend - is before the 500 race starts, they do they fly over with the missing man formation. It ends up going right over my house. I stand outside and wait for that every year - so sobering.

P.S. The little booklets were like little autograph books especially for our veterans. : ) Those are some dear-to-my-heart memories. I thought nothing of loading the children up and driving 40 minutes to the courthouse, I was sitting there by myself with my little girls, one was our baby on my lap and I was so tearing up using a kleenex during the guns going off, the salute? I saw an elderly vet look my way probably wondering what my story was as I was wondering what his story was...

DeleteMy husband is hubby is a Vietnam Veteran(Army) who went on to become a first responder and hazmat officer. I praise God everyday that He kept him safe. He also responded to the Pentagon on 9/11. He retired shortly thereafter. When we lived in the D.C. area we always took the children and went to the Mall for the Mall for the programs there and when the Wall was built we always went to the Wall. When he retired we moved from the D.C. area to a small town that pre-pandemic had a wonderful hometown parade with veterans from multiple wars marching in it The grade school children always marched in it and at the end went to the cemetary and laid flowers on all of the Veteran

DeleteI have been to the 'moving' wall when it came to Indiana at Ft. Ben. That was a moving experience. A friend's husband is a V.N. Vet and he and his friends made a motorcycle ride from west coast to Wahington several years ago. I followed his journey across American on FB - pretty neat. (he is my friend too)!

DeleteOur long weekend was the Victoria Day weekend and occurred last week. We planted the remainder of our gardens, Harvey and Kris went fishing, and we BBQ'ed our meal. This weekend we will finish up a few things provided the weather co-operates.

DeleteMy mother was a veteran of WWII. Someone once told me in a haughty tone that this was not a patriotic holiday. We will be home. Since I am ill, that is a given.

DeleteI am sure Memorial Day is a special day for a great many folks in your country. My husband served in the Royal Navy almost 31 years. Our eldest son was born while hubbie's ship was on its way to the Falklands in 1982. So fly your flags and remember with pride. Thank you for all your service.
ReplyDeleteThe 29 May is my birthday and our two eldest grandaughters (half sisters) both share 30 May as their birthday. We are all getting together on Sunday for a BBQ and our eldest son and family are here from Saturday-Monday. Thankfully it's due to be a fine and sunny few days.

DeleteMemorial Day is actually for remembering those we have lost while serving our country. We have other days to celebrate living veterans. But I think we all appreciate every single vet that has every served or is serving.

Thank you both. Yes, we have Remembrance Day on 11 November and Armed Forces Day in June to celebrate those still serving. Our local town has a young man on their War Memorial who died on a warship during the Falklands War and a friend of mine had a miscarriage when she heard her husband's ship had been hit. He was one of the lucky ones.
DeleteMy dad was a WWII veteran. He came home and worked for years before going back to school and eventually earning his PHd. He married & started a family in his late 30s. Growing up it seemed WWII had just happened and we were little aware of the Vietnam War. I remember my father being adamant about respect for the flag. He thought using in any manner but flying it correctly was wrong (so no clothing with flags and I still can't do that!). On Memorial Day I think of those he served with and his friends who were drafted and didn't come home like dad did. He never ever talked about that. Not surprisingly he only shared the "funny" stories.

Margaret, my dad was a WWII veteran as well. He enlisted in the Navy right after Pearl Harbor. My dad was extremely patriotic and active in veterans organization. And he was adamant about the flag, just like your dad. He never spoke of his experiences and if ever asked about them his stock answer was that he was the Admiral's food taster. He also only told funny stories. When doing some geneology I sent to St. Louis for his Navy records. Some of my siblings are named after his friends who didn't make it home. Cookie
DeleteSo glad your father made it home Margaret & Cookie. I think it says so much about the 'greatest' generation that they did not speak of the bad stuff from war. I have known many like that. They love sharing the good and funny stories. It is kind of sad - because they have had to suffer with what they saw and didn't share. Can't imagine having to keep all that inside. We learn from history. I wish more would have shared - but totally understand it.

My husband and I went out for breakfast this morning, then we did a few errands and bought more flower seeds, t posts for the garden and new mini blinds for the bedroom. We came home, I had a good nap, then we made potato salad and deviled eggs for tomorrow evening. Some of our adult children will be joining us for dinner.
