Weekly Wrap-Up 5/21

Happy Sunday to each and everyone.  I hope this finds you safe and healthy.
It is a beautiful morning here.  Chilly - yes - but it will warm up today.  We have been having some nights in the upper 40's, but it sure has been good for sleeping!!!
I have been sleeping with my bedroom window open a little and it has been wonderful (yes, it is secured to not open further).
We had a pretty good rain on Friday evening - and it looks to be a clear and dry week ahead.  Those allergy indexes are going back up today - so there will be that to deal with.  All in all it has been wonderful.

YAY!  It is peony time again.  The poppies are done and the peonies are blooming.  My goodness, I wish I could bottle that smell and keep it with me all the time all year round.  I just love them so much.

I got to see the first hummingbird of the season on Monday!!!!!  It came by to visit so many times that day!  I have 2 different ones from what I can tell, and they now visit daily.  Oh my world!!

I have had a peaceful week for the first time in ages.  I am optimistically hopeful.  Not sure exactly what changed from Sunday evening to Monday - but adverse behavior from neighbor has ceased this week.  I am giving it to God and His glory.  I have a feeling someone called the law and that maybe they came out - I am not sure - but even if that, God is at work.  I am still waiting for the other shoe to drop - not totally convinced yet - but it has been a peaceful week.  I will take that.  (hope I didn't just jinx things)
I am still praying for him and his soul - he needs it so.
**If you are so inclined, please pray for good behavior to continue from him.

This week:
  • I went out and got the garden area completely cleared of weeds after the rain last weekend
  • Dug and boxed some perennials that I want to save from out front - before the landscaping happens on that area.  They are to come Wednesday to take care of my little spot!!!!!!
  • Cleared another flower bed out back of weeds - oh my.  I then added bark mulch to the entire area.
  • Added more mulch to areas I had already done
  • Picked 4 bouquets this week - they are all over the house and it smells wonderful in here
  • Mowed and trimmed the entire yard (including the back 40 as I call it).  Seems my neighbor is avoiding me like some unknown plague - LOL - and he didn't mow it for the first time in almost 6 years! (he usually does it with a rider)
  • My neighbor across the street brought me zucchini plants!  Says she just wants a couple zucchini for bread!
  • Stayed home the entire week
  • Enjoyed a lot of friendly neighbor time with several neighbors
  • Made a gallon of iced tea
  • All meals from home and from what I have on hand
  • Working hard on pulling weeds and just getting the yard in order
  • Plan on planting the garden today and tomorrow
  • Worked in the shed some this week, pulling out some things to set at the curb for free

My meals this past week:
Chicken fried rice
Taco salad
Smoked sausage/bun, corn on cob, cuke/onion salad
Chessy tuna/broccoli pasta, cuke/onion salad
Loaded double cheeseburger and some chips
Shredded beef/gravy over rice - side salad
Ground pork breaded burger and salad
Had fruit for snacks

Also, the fried rice and the shredded beef - ate the leftovers for a 2nd meal each day - I never do that - I eat one meal a day.  But gosh, it was so good I ate it all!!!!!!!  LOL

How was your week?  Love hearing what you are all up to.  Gardening, groceries, deals, health, rain, you name it - just let us know what is going on!!!

Wishing each and every one a lovey week and a healthy and safe week.
Blessings from my humble little home to you and yours.

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.
Psalm 34:8

Dear Lord, I cannot imagine not having You in my life.  When bad things happen, and things make me sorrowful - You are always there for me.  You comfort me and get me through it all.  I am humbled every day and blessed in so many ways.  Nothing is better than You in my life - thank You for everything.  AMEN

  1. That passage from Psalms is good to read when we are a little down. An excellent reminder that we are not alone!

Boy we did have the rain! One of the rain barrels overflowed. The Farmer catches the water from the greenhouse and adds it to a barrel and it is full also. The herb garden looks really good. We put down cardboard and then landscape fabric on top of that. Hopefully it will keep weeds at bay. Then scattered mulch around the pots to dress it up a bit. Need to go through and chop out the thistles and put mulch down. I looked out the window by my desk, admiring the climbing rose which is blooming and saw a very tall thistle right in the middle. Daggone Eve! It's all part of the curse. The strawberries are going to town. We ordered some hoops to support netting to protect plants. I plan on getting all that set up today. What is on the strawberries now is kind of mooshing them down. Lots of runners to pot up and plant somewhere. Rhubarb is enormous. Something is chewing on the leaves and I need to do some research on just what that might be and how to get rid of it. Some of the rhubarb leaves are almost a yard across. The Farmer raised all the plants from seed. We have lovely radishes and lots of lettuce. That may be our lunch.

Need to cook the chicken breasts for Riley's breakfast and the ground turkey for Jacob's sometime today. Doing laundry and will hang things on the line. A perfect day for doing just that!

Enjoy your day. It is near perfect.

    1. I haven't checked the rain barrels - but boy oh boy did it clean out my gutters!!!!!!
If something is chewing on the rhubarb leaves, the plant should be fine. The leaves are poisonous - so whatever may get a bad surprise. Mine is ready for some picking as well.
The darned thistle is a pain! My roses have budded - but no blooms yet!
Yay on getting all the salad fixings. It sure is lovely. I have the windows open and loving it.
      Have a wonderful week.

    2. I'll be interested in what you find out about what is eating the rhubarb leaves. Something is eating mine also. It's a new plant for me this year.

    3. I found one article online that kind of fits the damage we have with the rhubarb leaves. https://naturallist.com/what-is-eating-my-rhubarb-leaves/

  2. So happy to read that things look better for you this week, Cheryl!

Yes, Peonies are wonderful! I have two enormous blooms that got rather ragged after the rain, but they still smell wonderful and this year are *huge*. There are some buds still to open, and this week should be fair, so they'll hold up a bit better.

Got beans and squash potted - but someone (a slug?) already ate one of the baby bean plants. Darn. I've put out crushed eggshells and some Sluggo and will hope for the best.

Dang buggers - hope you remedy the problem so you don't lose any more plants.

  3. What a wonderful verse and prayer! As you know, BIL moved into his own house this week. He's been busy. Something we hadn't seen here. Took down the chicken coop in one day and has been cleaning. He treated us to dinner at a local steakhouse last night as a thank you. Prayers are powerful. I thank you for them and continue to pray for your neighbor, Cheryl. I'm SO glad you had a quieter week!

With the house to ourselves and the canines, I spent a few busy mornings in the kitchen. Freezer prep for sale meat + freezer rotation. Also being my own butcher and deli worker. One roast beef was chilled in the fridge and sliced paper thin for lunchmeat. Four top round roasts were cut into steaks, stew meat and smaller roasts for later lunchmeat. I also made a big batch of strawberry/blueberry jam; it took almost 24 hours to set up on the counter, but it did set up (to my relief).

While I worked in the kitchen, Hubs worked in the yard laying down gravel over the septic field. The Stella de Oro Daylilies are starting to bud. I'll buy "growceries" this week for a potted kitchen garden on the patio. Our neighbors with the chickens and goats are putting in a 1/2 acre of raised beds for produce. We'll buy from them at harvest time. The wife offered to help me with raised beds, so...??

Dinners were BBQ pork chops with mac-n-cheese & veg (twice), waffles with eggs, sandwiches and the dinner out last night. Deals were listed earlier for groceries, but we picked up our household refill needs at Dollar General yesterday with $5 off $25 coupons, and I also got herbs and spices there for $1 each. Then, we went to a consignment store we love yesterday and bought a new-to-us, refinished (beautifully) dresser and chest of drawers for the MBR. Her grandson will deliver and take the marble topped vanity dresser; she'll refinish that and sell it, and we'll get a bit. The new dresser is smaller in overall size, but with much more drawer space. There's a perfect spot for the chest of drawers, which has 6 drawers. I should be set for storage and BIL will take the wood/iron storage trunk for his LR coffee table. He offered us use of his post hold digger and also all of his fencing materials to make a dog run. I gave him and our youngest son some of the rotated meats from the chest freezer.

After a gray, rainy week, the sun has returned. It's beautiful and we'll have a busy week ahead. Poppy is growing like a weed. We'll find out at the end of the week, when she gets her next set of shots, but she seems to have doubled in size. Just wish they'd let us sleep past 4:30-5 a.m. They're enjoying a lot of outside time when the sun is shining; we have a sun shade over the concrete paver bottomed kennel. Pups are still getting loose next door, but there are fewer and he looks to have his siblings there taking care of the animals better.

Peace and prayers for a good week to all. --Elise

How cool on the exchanging the dresser and them bringing and taking. Nice of you to share the meats.
I bet you enjoyed every bite of that dinner out!!!!!! LOL
Pups do grow quickly. Youngsters seem to be like us older folks - potty comes early!!!!!! I hope you get the run made - that will be nice.
I sure hope the animals next door are doing better.
      Have a wonderful week.

  4. I'm happy to hear you had a peaceful week! I stopped by Walmart yesterday to pick up a few bags of potting soil and they were taping up torn bags and marking them 50% off so that was a nice surprise. Our new garage door also came in at 500.00 less than the quoted price. I wish I could find savings like this every week. lol

  6. Hi Cheryl, I am jealous of your flowers and summer weather. Here in Arizona it is up near 100 and most of the flowering trees are now dropping tons of flower bits and pieces. Allergies galore. But it was a nice spring and the mornings are still glorious. I am in my new townhouse! Movers come next Friday. So soon I will be settled. Well, probably will be settled and unpacked in a month. I am happy in this new place and am feeling like I am less adrift. Thank you for sharing your experiences. It helps me worry less. Hilogene in Az

  7. Peonies are so lovely. A peaceful week is a good week. I hope the neighbour behaves himself. I truly believe that people come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. The reasons can vary, however when that reason is met, these people leave - sometimes because of a fractured relationship.
    Take care.

  8. One of our sons sent flowers with peonies of included for Mother's Day and they perfumed the whole house! We have a hummingbird nest in a holly outside the living room window. They are also busy at the feeder all day. So much fun! Praying for your neighbor misunderstanding.

  9. Peony flowers won't be popping out anytime soon but the plants are growing before my eyes. The perennial bed is cleaned; grass was cut again; hanging baskets were potted after the first greenhouse run. The price of bedding plants has increased. It is extremely dry in Alberta. Wildfires have burned >2 Million acres mostly in the forested areas in the western part of the province. Rain is needed so badly. I live 5-6 hrs from wild fires. The smoke was so dense yesterday with visibility less than 1/2 mile. I hosted the first Home Routes house concert on Thursday night after the 3 yr pandemic hiatus. Music brings people together and soothes the soul. My son & his family visited enroute to help his uncle brand cattle. The laundry room has been busy the past few days. A bear on the deck provided the excitement for the week. I banged a few pots together and the noise deterred it & it headed back up in the hills. Meals for this week: pasta/veggie salad; one in a million chicken with rice (Moroccan flavors); BBQ ribs with potato salad; fresh veg.

  10. Beautiful prayer and verse, Cheryl. Happy to read that your week was peaceful. Roses and peonies are my favorite flowers. I just recently got a die for my die cutter to make cards with peonies on them for gifts and I have many rose dies and stamps for the same purpose. The knock roses in our front yard are blooming and they're just glorious.
It's been beautiful weather here this past week and we got a lot done in the garden. Hubs tilled the raised bed and I worked on the containers. Celery, basil, zucchini, radishes, arugula, and bell pepper seedlings got transplanted to the containers. I have butternut squash now hardening off and they'll get planted in the raised bed on Wednesday, along with scallions, beets, heat resistant lettuce, chard and green beans. I ordered some BT for the broccoli so the worms don't get them. In the evenings I've been knitting beanies with left over yarn and so far have made 8 for the gift closet. Two gluten free banana chocolate chip breads were baked. This recipe using almond flour and the bananas and 1 TBSP of honey are they only sweeteners.
Meals this week were: Steak, salad and sweet potato; airfryed buffalo drumsticks, and fauxtato salad (made with cauliflower rather than potatoes); air fryer pork chops, asparagus , caulimash and rice custard; homemade onion soup and salad; potatchos and salad. sandwiches and smoothies. Cookie
The craft room got cleaned and reorganized again.

    Hello, all!
I need to get off this crazy carnival ride lol. Hubs had some OT ops last week and off/on thru June. This is very unusual so he is eager to take them. Some eves, some Saturdays, all over. I think he might've clocked near 60 hrs. last week. Even though it's not me, my schedule is all cattywampus as a result! Not enough sleep one night might cause me to need a nap, then so on and on. This week, he's working in 2 locations so an MRE is needed. No microwave or fridge. Then, he continues in that location for about 6 weeks. Since he typically lunches on leftovers, that's out the window as who wants to eat cold ziti?! So, we had to shop today for old fashioned box lunches!! Sandwiches and stuff. I bought on sale, but it added up. Add to that some pricier stock ups we needed and I wide-eyed the register amount lol. However, it'll all get eaten and it'll keep us from the market except for serious deals, milk, and bananas. I think it's hilarious that we both grew up in homes where milk and bananas are as important as toilet paper on a daily basis!!!

Aside from the carnival, I've used the extra time to deep clean and purge. I'm filling up a box of craft supplies to drop off in a local school in Fall. The art teacher will be thrilled! Paper, paint, glitter, stickers, paper flowers, etc. I've been gifted a lot from friends that stopped crafting, passed on, etc. and it's just TOO MUCH. I also need to go back to my NY resolution of picking one day per week to work on UFOs. I have an entire box of granny squares that my mom and I made that need to be crocheted together. Stuff like that. My mom's been gone for 10 yrs. now. I think it's time.

    Good week to all!

Think about wraps or salads. Get a thermos (2nd hand) or a small cooler. Think charcuterie box. Get one of those heated cups that plug into lighter spot in car.
You got options. Clean and get those UFO's done!
      Have a good week.

Almost forgot... I heard on our Ag report a couple of days ago that the wheat production is horrible because of the severe drought in Kansas. So, if you've got storage, you've been warned that there will be shortages and or price increases. Was it here that I heard that the same is true for tomatoes? But I think that's a too wet situation.

  13. Great to hear you had a calmer week, I will pray for it to continue. It’s good that you have some neighbourly neighbours as well, doesn’t it make a difference when you can get along, it makes you feel very secure. In our block we have one over bearing busy body who ruins it for everyone, she has caused real trouble between homes and now people just keep to themselves.
Zucchini’s are my number one garden plant, they have endless uses.
I hope your landscaping goes well on Wednesday, please give us pictures so we can feel envious and inspired.

  17. Frances, my hubs is getting the cataract surgery in a couple of weeks, now he has the red sclera in his eye so needs to check on that with surgery coming up and meds supposed to be picked up today. I need to check on rides for hubs, I'm supposed to be driving him back and forth and that is so not me because of where this place is. I sooooo get the questions and anxiety with all of this.

When my mil came back from the hospital we tried independent caretakers and did not like the ones we had (really shady characters, just a nightmare) so hubs finally broke down and tried 'Visiting Angels'. We were very pleased with them. They are bonded. They were not much more expensive if at all and we felt they were trusted and did a good job.

  18. Thank God Cheryl you are having Peace there! I'll continue to pray.

Love your verse and prayer, oh how God hears our prayers and the cries of our hearts. It's so nice to read your prayers.

One thing I did last Saturday was make some Lentil Burger patties, they were good! So we had Lentil Burgers on Saturday night. I was able to freeze 16 of them in the freezer too for future healthy low sodium veggie meals. Hubs approved, they were very good even without salt. I'm learning quickly about removing sodium and making sure to add potassium through our foods. Hibiscus tea, apple cider vinegar with the mother in it, L Argenine with French Maritime and Beet juice is great....and Holy Basil with L Theanine is wonderful. God is good.

I was able to snag frozen veggies for 99 cents a bag at Wally as usual, a very good deal, Wally still has deals to be found if you use their brand, was doing homework too on high potassium veggies. I bought another pair of utility scissors for 97 cents there, I'm always using scissors and needed an extra pair, those were found on kitchen aisle, bought some red potatoes, those are good because the skin has potassium and red potato skin is a bit more palatable to me, less starchy as well. Our married daughter who is on a very strict diet per nutritionist can even have those. : ) Yep, just snagged the usuals including sweet potatoes. Bell peppers are in the garden so that's a good thing to saute with onions and that makes everything taste good along with garlic.

Today I'll be doing this and that, hope to squeeze sewing in, not sure about supper, maybe those red potatoes in tomatoes Italian style with a green. We're still remediating the mold issue, replaced the ac/boxes in the attic, the biggest thing and will continue hepa vaccing little by little, waiting on a sheetrock man to replace a few places. Hubs might do it but is so busy with other business so we sha'll see.

You ate it all! Haha! That sounds like me! : D Some things are just that good right?!

I hope you are having a nice Monday sweet Cheryl, sure will be praying for continued peace there friend.
