Good Thursday to all. I thought I would relay a story to you. Sometimes there are people in this world that just make us shake our heads in disbelief!!!! I said sometimes - BUT I do this daily!!!!!!!
I had a neighbor call me the other day. We are friendly - but not super close or anything. We talk garden, we talk kitties, and we talk neighborhood. Her hubby is a handy man and is the one who painted my doors and shutters for me.
We really have NEVER talked money or frugal ways.
She called to ask me a question - she said she thought she knew my answer already!
Question - if your electricity was off for 18 hours would you keep or trash all the food in both your freezer and frig?
I chuckled and said "Of course I would keep it. It wouldn't be thawed at all."
Her answer was "thank you"!!!!!
Now she and her siblings are pretty much estranged (I found this out that day). It happened after her Mom made her POA. She always is the one that takes mom to doctor and in for hospital tests. The other two got ticked at her (not mom). So, her sister called her bragging that they threw all the frig and freezer food away, and that they donated enough money to replace it all. Trying to make her feel bad.
She had taken her mom breakfast and coffee and lunch the day of the outage - because mom couldn't cook.
Then she asked me - "do they just have more money than us - is that why they would throw everything away?"
My response was "money has nothing to do with stupidity." She said that was the best statement she had heard in ages!!!! LOL
You can have all the money in the world and be dumb as a box of rocks. You can be dirt floor poor and be a wise and resourceful soul.
It just amazes me the things people do. Definitely more money than sense!!!!!! Or at least that is how it appears.
18 hours - not opening and closing doors of appliances - things would be fine. In most cases things will last a few days. Even if things (especially meat) were thawed BUT still very cold or icy - I would have cooked them and then refrozen.
The waste in our society today is just unbelievable. People have no qualms about trashing good food or items. There are so many who would have nothing.
I am aware not everyone will agree with my assessment of the situation - but I think most of you would. The food was fine!!!! I do believe this was done out of lack of knowledge or spite.
Funny, how she knew what I would think! We may never speak of frugality to some folks - but yet they seem to know us better than we can imagine!!!! Maybe there is a vibe given off.
This is just one of those things that made me 'shake my head' this week!!!!!!!
What has made you shake your head this week?
In 1969 my parents moved us from Iowa to Florida and moved a full chest freezer. We had a U Haul truck and Mom following along pulling our pop up camper. We camped at night and Dad ran an extension cord from the freezer to the outlet at the campground and that freezer never thawed. Dad had common sense. Likewise when we moved from Florida to SC in 1993 we moved our full upright freezer and I believe it was without power for 36 hours. No problems. It never even crossed our minds to empty it before we moved! And the craziest lack of common sense I have seen lately is that it takes a $233K income a year for a family of four to live comfortably! Most people would be shocked to know how little we live on and we have a paid for house worth half a million dollars now (what? stupid high real estate prices) and a paid for 1/6th share of a lake house.. But we have it---you know--common sense!!

DeleteLana - I see those statistics and also think WHAT?????? My house is big or fancy at all - but I have a very comfortable life. I stay warm and cool, I have more than plenty of food, I buy pretty much whatever I want (there is the kicker). I don't really want for anything. I like a simpler version of life. It sure doesn't take much for me to live. People often don't believe me - but we just know how to do it.

I would see how warm the fridge got and may have gotten rid of dairy and mayo but the freezer definitely should have been fine. Like you said, the freezer food should still be frozen after a day or two and if not, cook it. Like you, I just don't understand some people.
ReplyDeleteWell, I shake my head just about every DAY at one family member who recently moved here. He's been in his huge house for 2 months. Rather than borrowing son's carpet shampooer, he ripped up all the carpet and flooring and ordered high end textured Berber. Rather than just washing walls that had been painted 2 years ago, he bought a bunch of equipment and a compressor to repaint. There's still not a stick of furniture, no boxes, etc. in the house; he's paying $500 per month for 4 storage units. Last week he bought a brush mower rather than borrowing our weed trimmer, which he said would take too long.
ReplyDeleteBut wait... there's more! He was convinced the house was far out of level. Had a guy come to take measurements. It wasn't. He didn't believe him. So he paid $1000 for someone to jack up the house by 1-1/2 inches on one side. Thus causing walls and outdoor wood siding to crack. It's gotten to the point that when we're all together, and he sharing his expensive endeavors, my son looks at ME... as if I could do anything. Hubs and I have both tried talking to him.
No carpet. No painting done yet. Now he's talking about building a garage. Nevermind there are several outbuildings, including horse stalls, a tack shed, a garden shed and two shipping containers for storage, as well as a concrete parking pad by the house. When he runs out of money--and he will--life will get interesting for him. Did I mention he goes out to eat regularly? Because no kitchen table or stools for the breakfast bar have been moved from storage?
Here's how I see it, though: that's *his* little red wagon to pull. I pray for God to guide him daily, knowing one must be open to that guidance. Some people just don't want to hear practical advice or suggestions. No point in going on about it. I forgot to mention our propane refill left off the summer discount, so it was $135.52 yesterday for 49.16 gallons, which is all we'd used since last fall. Now we're scouting wood pellet summer sales and will order 4 pallets of them to split with our son (his heating is only his pellet stove) for an even better discount. Meaning, I'm keeping my focus on our own stuff.
For those that didn't see (late yesterday), the tips I've gleaned here haven't only helped with financial health, they've paid off for physical health! Side benefits. :-D

Thanks for finding the post, Cheryl. When he was living with us it drove me insane. Now that he's in his own place? Not so much. In large part because I know he's going to do whatever he wants, however he wants to, no matter what anyone says. It bothers Hubs and son far more than it does me now. Oh my goodness. Four storage units? I certainly hope he has some very expensive furniture and extremely sentimental and valuable items in those units paying that kind of money to rent the units. Can't figure the storage unit thing out unless it's very temporary. Purple Heart will come for donations and give a tax receipt in most areas if he has too much stuff, lovely veteran volunteers come to pick up (at least in our area). You know your donations are being taken care of. There is a lot to say here. It sounds like the fella has no common sense.

I agree the food in the freezer would be fine. What amazes me all the time is the folks who think if something is past the Best Buy date they throw it away. That is not an expiration date. We grew up in a world of no dates on cans. We would look at the can and make sure it looked good. We lived to tell about it. Nancy in Vancouver WA

It is amazing how much food we waste in this country. It also amazes me that people think the "best by" date is an expiration date. It even explains on the USDA web site that those dates really don't mean much of anything. I think we live in a culture of fear about most everything, including the food we eat! Wanita

ReplyDeleteAs for the food thing, I'm not sure what people are thinking. Maybe someone they know got very ill from a similar situation? I do wonder if, on the flip side, the date people will continue to drink obviously spoiled milk because it's still within the good date lol. I opened a container of milk that was a week away from the use by and the smell about knocked me over. Completely curdled. Blegh.
Totally off topic, but I wanted to respond to Elise and Mary B. I had to look up a ten year rosary because I'd never heard of it. But I did recognize them! I've always heard them called 'finger rosaries.'. They're like traveling prayer beads! My grandma had one in her purse and would sit with her hand it it and recite prayers in her head. In all my years I've never been able to remember the whole thing without a cheat sheet!! In the olden days, many families prayed the rosary every night. We didn't. In my family, due to second marriage of my mom, we had 3 Catholics, 1 Seventh Day Adventist, and 1 Mormon lol.
As for making them, I think it would be fine if done respectfully. I would see about enclosing a card with them for how to use them. Those would probably be available at any Catholic supply store.
I hope that you have a good experience going back to church. There are groups at most churches for exactly that. For some good reads and you tubes, you might want to look into Matthew Kelly at Dynamic Catholic. I love their books and they tend to meet you where you are.
Rediscovering Christianity is a good one. I've really never read one that I didn't glean something good from.
Every day I shake my head at stupidity. It runs rampant!!!!!!! Those people at Yellowstone - well there is no nice word for folks like that!
DeleteI don't use curdled milk - but if it is starting to go off - it is used in pancakes, biscuits or waffles. Mom and grandma always used soured milk for baking.

Thank you, Debby. My faith hasn't disappeared over all these years, and Hubs and I have attended/joined any number of churches of different denominations over the years (he isn't Catholic). It was our youngest son's interest that sparked my attending Mass with him. While they were growing up, between other Protestant churches, I'd take him and his big brother to Mass sometimes. Now he wants to know more.

Elise, I understand how you feel. I grew up in a modern Catholic church, not traditional and one priest, Father Connelly, when I was a little girl, truly knew the Lord, some did not. One of the deacons knew the Lord too, got me reading the Bible, but many didn't. My husband went to the old world Catholic church, school, college, you name it. Well, he got saved and understood that personal relationship right before I met him, I think I already did but didn't understand that I could be sold out to the Lord, a bit confused on how it "worked". Anyhow, we have gone to non denomination churches, Baptist churches and Assembly of God churches. In every one of them there are "churchies" not those who truly have that relationship with God. There is one church that I absolutely loved and may go visit sometimes once again when we get the druthers and are in the area. In downtown there is an old, old, Methodist church, First Methodist. My parents married there in the early 50s. The church is over 100 years old and the first of our daughters who you saw the video of married there too. When we went there, hubs and I traipsed up to the balcony and tears rolled down our faces. The beautiful hymns, the stained glass with Jesus and His little Lambs was so beautiful and the entire place was filled with the Holy Spirit. The pastor at that time, Pastor Wende married our daughter and son in law. When he counseled them he was clearly hearing from the Holy Spirit. I would bring my Bible to church there and just loved it. Well, a liberal young lad came there, took over and it was like a death. Finally that little lad left and another one is there and he looks much more traditional and Weslayan. So. To make a long story shorter, if you find an old Weslayan, *truly* old fashioned Methodist church, you have found a gem in most cases but *finding* one like that is very difficult. We have gotten to the point where we listen to sermons on our own because of geographical distance on most weekends. We enjoy Allen Jackson in Tennessee, his sermons, we'll listen in the car. But I know exactly what you are saying about the beautiful traditions that we miss that so many protestants don't understand. Everything is so very messed up but the Lord is not. And I do know how some Baptists and others too can be...Trust me, not the spirit of Christ at all. That goes for any church. Look what they did to Jesus.
DeleteOh, and please don't think I'm picking on Baptists, I've had a Catholic rail me on me to the point of me blocking them, they said I left the true church for a *book*. Frightening what people believe on every front. That phariseeical spirit can be in them all. You should see a couple of the looks I got when I told some of the traditional protestants I was visiting the old Methodist, them not knowing the full story or history. But history tells all, just watch some of those people and how they end up and the truth we find out in some cases...

DeleteI can't imagine why they would feel the need to toss all the food. It seems there may be some sort of power struggle over mom. At least they provided the funds to replace it all, though what a terrible waste.
ReplyDeleteWhen my Dad moved to the nursing home, he gave me POA to manage his bills and payments. When my sister came for her annual visit, she tried to cause problems, and he told me he was considering giving her the POA instead. I said fine, then she can visit every 6 weeks like I do (I drove 4 hours each way to visit for a few days at a time). That shut that down in a hurry. Her issue was I wasn't giving Dad cash very often because he didn't keep it on his person, and wasn't purchasing anything at the home's canteen anyway. He just liked having some in his drawer, but unfortunately it just kept getting stolen. Or perhaps he gave it away, but he didn't remember doing so.
I feel for your neighbour, this time in her life isn't an easy one, especially without the true support of her family. I was fortunate that both my brothers were there for me.
I do believe there is a power struggle going on. Her sis only called to tell her that she and the brother donated funds to replace everything to kind of rub it in. They never did ask her.

Often those who "loudly throw their money around" are living high on debt while those with much say nothing and quietly help when they see a need. I'd bet your regular readers/followers have zero debt and live comfortably within or below our means.

ReplyDeleteWe are overloaded with zucchini. A lady that Erin works with at Big Lots said she would take some eggs and I'm hoping she will take some zukes too. Today I am going to make a taco skillet with peppers, zucchini, corn cut from the cob, and onions topped with queso (from Costco). May make some zoodles one day. Have canned diced tomatoes from last year to make a sauce. The Farmer had a freshly picked Serrano pepper with his eggs this morning. we have had beets several times. Green beans are blooming like crazy. Cucumbers are plentiful. We are abundantly blessed!
Sure hope we get some rain.

Gosh I love this time of the year - so much freshness. Rain would be nice - not holding my breath!
I 'preserve' zucchini for future use. Cube it, toss with a good EVOO, spread single layer on a rimmed cookie sheet, sprinkle with pepper and garlic salt. Roast 425 for 20 minutes. Cool completely. Freeze in containers and then vacuum freeze so you've got it in the dead of winter. I throw it in a pot of chili, your preferred pasta sauce, lasagna layer....so many uses for this high output crop! I selfishly rarely give it away and I put in 6-8 plants every year d/t squash bugs.

DeleteMy freezer and refrigerator were without electricity due to tornado knocking out all power. I managed to buy a freezer and get it hooked back up in 24 hours. I did not throw out one thing from the freezer, but about half of the refrigerator contents. Milk and such was gone. I got rid of refrigerated leftovers. Cheese was fine and vegetables and fruits. I made judgments on each item instead of tossing it all.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. You were very smart = freezer goods should be good for a lot longer than 18 hours. I can see milk, or leftovers - but most all should be savable. Judgements - good ones! Not the ones many people make!!!!!
DeleteI shared your zucchini idea link with my daughter so thank you. She's getting a bounty. I'm grateful to have both a mom and MIL who were thrifty, and we've seemed to have passed it on to my kids. No $233,000 incomes in my families future, but my kids all live comfortably in their means, plus, money to go towards a few luxuries like travel. This is because they don't need to keep up with their peers, they enjoy healthy though humble meals, like simple entertainment with friends, and so on. However, I do know in parts of the country, humble costs so much more than here.

Agree with everyone above. If anything was thawed, it would be cooked and eaten or prepared and refrozen for later meals. If the refrig temps got warm enough, anything, milk, coffee creamer, and other milk-based dairy would go, along with mayo and deli-type salads made with a mayo base. I wouldn't want to risk food poisoning over that little cost. Had it once, never again.

I believe it sounds like some sort of power play,
I keep chickens so anything that might seem "off" I feed to my chickens.
I always freeze milk if it seems off .....to use in baking and anything with mayo would have been given to the chickens if questionable.
People need to wake up and start thinking for themselves. It scares me to think how people would react to a true depression. Thank goodness some people still think for themselves and are willing to share their knowledge if asked....good job Cheryl.

I tape the fridge and freezer shut when power goes out. It stops me from opening them by accident. I've not lost anything except one freezer full of food because it came unplugged and we didn't know about it. Phew, what a nasty surprise. Buried the whole contents, with tears.

Like you, Mary, I've had food poisoning and it's best avoided, but that said, when we've had power outages I've put a something inexpensive from the freezer into the fridge and then NOT opened until power comes back on. Homemade broth works well for that as it's free and I can always make more. I remember your experience with the freezer coming unplugged and check mine regularly now!
DeleteI got myself one of the pocket Rosaries at the St. Rita Festival for just that reason. Can't tell you how many times over the years saying a silent Hail Mary or Our Father has prevented me from blowing like Mount Vesuvius.

DeleteDo you think that is what they really mean? Or are they saying that certain foods left out of refrigeration should be tossed after 4 hours? That would make plain sense to me, but if everything is still cold in the fridge, then I'm not tossing it.
I'm trying to remember my childhood and I *think* catsup and mustard were on the kitchen shelf, never in the fridge! Syrup and Honey were in the cupboard. We didn't have soy sauce (I think my dad would have starved before he ate that foreign food, silly man!) but I have seen soy sauce and other sauces on the tables at Asian restaurants and I think it's there all day - and probably all night! Butter was on the counter or table at home, in a butter dish unless it was hot summer and the butter would melt.
If 4 hours is the rule, people in California must be tossing food often, as they have blackouts frequently, or so I hear.

Here's all I can say... I have IBD/UC which makes me more prone to food poisoning. Meaning I'm very careful. That said, when power has been out for 4 hours and I've left the fridge door shut, I've never thrown out the food inside of it once the power came back on. Not once. As I mentioned above, put something hard frozen from your freezer into the fridge and leave the door closed. Even in summer when rolling blackouts were common in CA that worked, but to each their own. (shrug) --Elise

Many restaurants leave catsup and mustard out all the time, and yes soy sauce too. Oh most assuredly syrup and honey in the cabinet. Yes, one needs to do what they think is best. Best for me, would be not waste it.

Well, I have a story to tell about expiration dates. As some of you know my son works for a major dairy warehouse and the employees are encouraged to take home from a designated palate, milk products. So He brought me some last year and it always has a long expiration date on it. Anyway before the date came up I froze the quarts of milk. I still am using that milk, no sour smell. He has saved me so much money over the years.

DeleteSounds like a winner to me! :) My DS (dear son) does not work with foods, but cars. He helps me with auto repairs. It's a wonderful gift. That milk your DS gave you must be that new process with long expiration date. How very nice. :)

Laurie that is just fantastic. Why not??? I love that he gets to do that and what a benefit!!!!! It is wise to get those things when we can - and then freeze if we must. What a huge money saver. I find that milk lasts a lot longer than any date on the bottom shelf at the back of my frig. I sometimes open for the first time a week or so after the date and use it all up. It is always fine and tastes wonderful!!!

Yes, I read that if you keep your milk in the back of the frig it stays colder and will last longer. I do always have a sniff to make sure it's still okay.

ReplyDeleteI'm appalled at those women throwing all of that away! The poor mom!!! I'm sure she sat there feeling very violated! Poor thing.
People are so wasteful, they throw things away just so very quickly not even seeing if someone else could use it. We have rental properties and it blows our mind what these people will leave behind like it's nothing. I stayed home, choosing to be a homemaker and mother my children instead of a career that the world would have given accolades to and trust me, it may not be easy on one income, but it can be done and I can guarantee that nothing was wasted.
I'm just appalled. It hurts my heart to hear these stories. ...Just awful.

Oh yes, what people leave behind can be mind-boggling. I worked for a while at a self storage facility. I was shocked at what people would store (for years on end!) and then what they'd walk away from, leaving for the facility to deal with. I Do Not Understand!

DeleteIt is like people have no regard for their finances or for their things. As someone said earlier - those are usually the ones in debt to their eyeballs and would be S.O.L. in a week or so if they lost a job.
I have always respected my funds and what it took to get them - therefore my stuff.

Hi Cheryl, I have to say that every time I leave my home, I end up shaking my head. People feed children junk, laugh AT them and even smack them. Not to mention the rudeness that has overtaken our society. That's why I love your blog so much...I can read it all and never have to SMH ! P.S. Good morning, Cheryl. We llive in a small town that is very historic and gets loads of visitors year round. It amazes me that these visitors let their children run wild, climbing on monuments, pulling up flowers from graves, while they're busy playing with their phones and paying no attention to those children as they destroy things. This happens in restaurants as well, the kids are running around and screaming and the parents are busy withtheir phones. The rudeness is over the top. We went to a wedding a few years ago and there were several tables of people, all playing with their phones and laughing. It seems that instead of talking to each other they were texting back and forth to each other. Both these things are real head shakers for me.

It is so rude for people to just let their kids run amuck!!!!!! It drives me crazy too. They just have no time to set boundaries for those kids and then wonder why said kids get in trouble!!!! DUH!
DeleteI go to events - family and other - and there sits people on their phones. I have made many a comment about paying attention to those in front of them instead of the stupid phones!!!!

It was great reading the comments...my pet peeve is hearing air conditioning running when it's 60 degrees and we don't have a air quality issue. It doesn't make sense but the smoke from the Canada wildfires is coming back again they said. I hate that.
ReplyDeleteI get that! I keep my AC at a pretty high place - it is fine for me. I just love fresh air. They supposed the smoke will be back in our area tomorrow! Sigh. I guess all we can do is deal with it.
DeleteI'm not sure about shaking my head but I did internally look sideways at my sister. We had a party for my mom's 80th bday. As we were cleaning up and putting it all away my sister insisted we portion everything for giving away or she was going to throw it all away! Meat and cheese trays; veggie trays, chips, buns, cake, plasticware, condiments, drinks (non-alcoholic). The only things she was not tossing were the decorations that she was going to sell to recoup the cost.
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say, the rest of us, divied up the food. I took all the veggies from the barely used trays. I took alot of deli ham and turkey and cheeses. We took some buns that will probably go for cat food as we don't eat much for breads anymore.
I took the fancy butters, the mustard, organic pbutter and jelly. They'll all keep for a long time in the fridge.
I took one of the bouquets of flowers that were still very fresh and lovely.
I took all the plasticware. I won't have to buy forks for a VERY long time! We use it for holidays and guests.
After I started saying "yes, I'll take that." then others realized she was serious and was really going to toss it all. Thankfully I believe it all was distributed and nothing was wasted.
If nothing else, I would have called the city mission and asked if they could use it. Especially the unopened/unused items.
What is wrong with people? Why in the world would anyone throw wonderful and useful items away like that? I am so happy that you all got it and shared and that you have things that will help you now and in the future.
DeleteYES, a local soup kitchen or mission would have loved those items as well. I swear some people just do NOT think! There again the attitude of more money than sense.
