Weekly Wrap Up 2/4

Hello all.  Hope this finds you well and safe.  It is amazing how quickly Sunday seems to come around!  I know it is seven days - but boy they do fly by.
Well, it appears the big rodent saw his shadow this week!  Spring is around the corner?  We will see, it will get here whenever it is supposed to.  Meteorologist or rodent - I don't put much stock in either one!
We are supposed to have a mild upcoming week here.  50's and some sun.  We had sun yesterday and boy was that a pretty sight to see.
We get an extra day this month - it's leap year!

I had several different woodpeckers out there this week, and there were more robins.
I even looked out the living room window and saw chickens!  Geesh one day they were on the front porch.  I have stopped putting birdseed out front for now.  They haven't figured how to get in the back yard - as they just walk around the block!  These chickens need to stay home.
This is technically the neighbor's yard - but right outside my window.

This week was kind of quiet again.
  • Did some more decluttering - it is an ongoing process
  • General cleaning
  • All the laundry
  • I ran out one day to Fresh Thyme Market and restocked my natural supplements.  I also got myself 2 sweet onions, 4 bananas, and some cocktail tomatoes.  Oh, and a couple fresh tamales!  I looked around the entire store (it has been a while since there) and just enjoyed the morning. Talked to several other customers.
  • I then stopped at a place that has been around a short while called Circle City Bargains - it has a bit of this and that.  Fresh produce at super prices, snack foods, and even some furniture and yard and garden tools of all kinds - really discounted prices!  I ended up with 2 jars of cashews (19 oz.) each for $3!!!
Not even close to best by date.  Very tasty for a snack.  They are so good.
  •  Then stopped at a newer Hispanic market on my way home to look around.  Bought nothing - but it was fun to look & listen to the music!
  • Used up a small bit of mushrooms I had in taco meat, and used up a bit of onion left and some leftover rice in same
  • Froze leftovers that I did not eat this week
  • Got a little fresh air in the house on Saturday!
  • Just doing all the regular stuff we all do.
  • All meals from home
Meals this past week:
Tamales and rice
Pulled pork (freezer) sliders, fresh veggies and hardboiled egg
Chili (freezer) cheese dogs and small salad
Chopped steak with sauteed mushrooms and peppers, long grain rice and fresh veggies
Leftover rice w/Aminos (like soy sauce) and salad with egg
Loaded nachos  (had no chips - so I roasted a couple tostada shells and broke them up)
Cup of cheesy broccoli soup (freezer) and grilled ham & cheese sandwich
SNACKS:  fruit, nuts, and cheese & crackers

How was your week?  What did you all accomplish this past week?  I think we are all getting anxious for spring - I know I am.  But, like mom used to say, "just wishing your life away"!!  LOL
My mind is wondering on spring things though.
Any great deals this week?

I hope this finds each and everyone of you well and safe.  I hope all things family are going better for many of you with problems.  I wish you all a wonderful week.
Blessings to you and yours from my humble little home.
*************

Lord, we do thank You for being our stable rock.  We know we always have You with us.  Help us each one to lift our problems to You.  Amen

  1. My week shifted with some ever evolving family change so I literally only bought essentials - well, with one bag of nacho tortilla chips. I'm going to do some cooking today, send meals home with my daughter's so we all can ease into the week.

    1. Things change - that can throw a wrench into any plans. I just got those couple things I mentioned - have plenty here. Nice of your to do batch cooking and help your daughter as well.
      Have a great week.

  2. Time slips by. I'm thankful for quiet times. The end of the week comes & I have to ask myself, "What did I do?" The weather has been mild allowing for 10 miles of walks this week. I'm in need of a 4x4 truck around here. My neighbor found one for sale; we'll go look at it tomorrow. I got mom to a dr's appt & myself to a massage. I don't think of massage as a luxury; I do believe it keeps my body in balance. I visited with an old friend who's currently undergoing cancer treatment. We always pick up right where we left off no matter how long between visits. So many good memories. I finished Ken Follet's book, Never, this morning. I'm thoroughly enjoying the Call the Midwife video series. It calls to mind my 34 yr nursing career in public health. In the kitchen: fish chowder, pan fried halibut, mediterranean tuna noodle casserole, mac & cheese, rice krispie squares.

    1. I do that sometimes too! Just wonder where it all went!!
Nice walking. I have my old Blazer, but it would be nice to have a truck.
      I would love a massage - I have never had a professional one. I keep saying....maybe!
Sounds like a fish week at your home. Yum. Hope your friend does well with treatment.
      Have a wonderful week.

  3. I had a pretty relaxed week, most of the snow melted and today we have rain so I suspect the rest will be gone, at least temporarily. Temps will cool off and we have 5-10 cm. (about 2-4 inches) of snow in the forecast for Wednesday. This unusual warmish weather will certainly make the winter seem short. We could and probably will get some nasty weather but I don't expect we'll see the brutal cold weather again. Fingers crossed! Someone posted on a gardening sight that pussy willows have opened already in their area. Crazy!

    1. Glad to hear others had a relaxed week as well. I am sure more snow may show up - but let's hope the worst is over. I don't think we will have brutal cold again either. I heard early in the year, that our area may have an early spring - we will see.
      Have a fantastic week.

  4. Happy Sunday! Our neighbor's chickens, before they were meals for predators, used to do the same, Cheryl. Yesterday we saw he has a horse trailer parked, so maybe the mule is being rehomed? The part of the mule corral that was on our property is about the footprint size of our house: this week Hubs put out some old perennial wildflower seeds and hay to see if anything will actually grow there. Wild birds had a feast. We had rain, freezing rain and snow, the latter melted quickly. I stayed busy in the house. More rain/snow coming this week.

Meals were: deep dish "pizza" using leftover meat spaghetti sauce on biscuit dough, sprinkled with shredded cheese, BLTs, ham sandwiches using leftover Christmas ham from the freezer, crock pot beef roast w/potatoes & carrots, and beef barley soup with crackers. As my tooth issues prevented dinner out for our January anniversary, and oral surgery will prevent a Valentine's Day celebration, we had lunch out yesterday.

Your day out sounds like it was nice! It's good to get out sometimes. We had a day of that on Wednesday for the dentist + oral surgeon. In between appointments I dropped off cookies at a favorite locals' shop. Bought a few autographed books and a tee shirt while there. Yesterday, another day out) we got two 40 lb. bags of dog food using a gift card from Christmas at the ranch store, bought good sale priced fruit & eggs at the grocery store, and using the $5 off $25 Dollar General coupon got more baking supplies.

This coming Friday morning at 6:10 a.m. is my oral surgery. The tooth will be pulled, but he also found a small papilloma on the roof of my mouth that will be removed and sent off for pathology. I'll be honest--that's scary. Hoping it's not cancer. But I have pre-made (homemade) meals in the freezer for Hubs while it all heals up, and expect to be eating a lot of eggs, creamed soups and such.

How are Blackie and Bits doing? I'll bet Bits is getting bigger by now! Have a GOOD week. --Elise

    1. A funny aside... when I was growing up I could be a mouthy little thing. My mom used to say, "It's not what you say, it's how you say it. Your mouth will be your ruination." Oh, I've gotten better over the years--believe it or not--but the irony isn't lost on me. And I appreciate your patience, Cheryl. The past 5 months have brought a lot of physical pain, from my foot surgery to (now) my mouth. A different spin on foot and mouth disease? :-/

    2. Well, I figure a dog or something is going to get the chickens, that or a big hawk.
I just worry as this is a neighborhood and a lot of hot rodders go up and down the street. Birds aren't going to make it long.
Your meals sound good. Just any day you go out and celebrate is a holiday!! The actual date doesn't matter.
I hope the dentist goes well, and prayers the other isn't anything.
Sounds like you had a good day out as well.
      Have a lovely week .

    4. Best wishes, Elise, with the oral surgery and the papilloma. And you are not the only one with "mouth" issues. I often speak before I think, and then folks are hurt or angry. It's a bit better now at age 80, but I still slip up.

Cheryl, hope you're able to get Bits snicked before he learns to spraymark his territory!

  5. Yes, we need to cling to the hand of the Father! He is the stability we need these days.

What a fun time shopping in all the different places. The Fresh Thyme close to us has a new manager and he has made some wonderful changes in the store. We have made friends with him and the fellow who stocks the produce. I will look at something and he'll say "let me get you a better one".

My Scripture study this morning was John 6. You will love this. When the disciples were instructed by Yeshua to gather the fragments left from feeding the five thousand, it was actually honoring the halakah, traditional Jewish law prohibiting the destruction of food. The quote is "gather the leftover pieces, so that nothing gets wasted." The concept of being thrifty and avoiding waste goes back to biblical times. It all speaks to being good stewards of what the Father gives us.

Gorgeous day! The week looks to be wonderful. I'm going to work inside today and work outside some of each day during the week. Maybe the Farmer can get the herb table built. It's time to start some plants under grow lights in the garage.

    Snuggles for the bitty kitties!

    1. Amen, Donna! I've read that passage recently, too. Thank you for explaining about halakah.

Is your husband using any kind of patter/instructions for the herb table? I've been trying to think of some way for Hubs to use all the wood pallets we have stacked by our shed for something useful to gardening. A potting table or herb table sounds useful! Saving seeds from the last (delicious and huge!) tomatoes bought. --Elise

    2. It was fun just looking around at the stores. I usually just go and get - it was nice to wonder.
What a lovely passage. Yes, people have always been conscious of not wasting. I love that. It is funny I have seen so many FB posts and YouTube videos the past couple days about being a conscientious shopper/user of foods and goods.
I plan on going out in a few.
      Have a great week.

    3. Yes, in old times food was very hard to come by. It required a LOT of work for everyone, so using every scrap was important. Remember that people used make "string balls" - saving string? That was something hard to make at home, so it didn't get wasted when it showed up. Scraps of cloth became pieced quilts. Short bits of yarn became GrannySquares for afghans.
People lived by Waste Not Want Not.

Donna, thank you for the explanation of halakah.

  6. Hi Cheryl. Sounds as if you had a good wander around the stores this week and a chat, I had to Google tamales as not heard of them.
My knee surgery last Saturday went well, that was done at eight in the morning and I was back home the Sunday evening with crutches. It did take effort to get up the steps to the front door and then upstairs. The knee has been so much better that the right one I had done in May. The pain killers are quite effective but make me feel really tired.
My husband has been a star looking after me but poor man, he has come down with a sore throat and cold. We, well he managed to put everything back in the kitchen from the spare room and although I thought I had got rid of so much 'stuff' there was more for the charity shop this week.
I did smile reading about the ready meals on your last post. I rarely buy them but we did have a very nice fish pie earlier in the week. Grandaughters no 2 had just brought us over a dish of chilli and another of Mac n Cheese for this week as our daughter was batch cooking. Hubby was very happy, no cooking for 2 days :-) They went to Ikea yesterday and bought us 6 mugs, blue, same colour as the bottom kitchen cabinets and the 12 piece dinner set the same design that Grandaughter bought me for Christmas. I got rid of a crazy amount of mugs so was pleased with the gift.
The evenings here have started to get lighter, nice to think spring will be on its way soon. Hope you are having a Happy Sunday. Freddie has just come back from a walk and has sprung on me, he likes to make sure his humans are both at home.

How nice on the gifts and the food! I am curious about fish pie as well. Can you explain?
Love the nights staying light a little longer. It seems to give me more energy. I need that! Be careful of Freddie jumping on your leg. Take care and get all healed.

    3. Heather, I'm glad your surgery is done, that it went well, and that you can tolerate the pain pills well. That's all a huge blessing! And how sweet of your family to bring ready made meals. Sounds like you were a good influence!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't British fish pie sort of like Shepherd's pie, but using a creamy fish base beneath the mashed potato topping? Sounds very comforting. --Elise

She had some trouble with “authority “ as she calls them about her immigration many, many, many years ago. It’s been difficult, she worries but hides it well. Hopefully she now has some good legal help and the issues can be clarified quickly.

  10. A beautiful day here in SW PA, plenty of sunshine and temps in the mid-50sF. The first crocuses are blooming in the front flower bed. It gets full afternoon sun this time of year, and plenty of leaf mulch kept the bed warm. I've been walking a mile every day when I get home.

I've been spending a few hours every day with Husband. He got his new Broda wheelchair Friday, so I make sure he gets his feet up for a few hours in the afternoon. He is so badly swollen from CHF; his feet and legs are painful. I think we're going to try a diuretic and ace bandage wraps, too. Have to see what is allowed under hospice (comfort care only). We listened to Bach's Brandenburg Concertos on YouTube in his room this afternoon. I brought in a laptop and was able to hook up to the guest WIFI.

Cheryl, you recently mentioned the TV show "Never Too Small". I can't find full episodes of it online. I have been watching "Tiny House Nation" on PlutoTV (free streaming). I've always been fascinated by tiny houses, though I'm too old to live in one now. You have to be young and agile to get up ladders to a sleeping loft. I do get interesting ideas for storage. Some of the houses and apartments they feature are 500-600 sq ft, almost as large as my mobile home, though I would not consider that size "tiny".

I looked at my January expenses and found I'm getting my grocery expenses under control. Unfortunately I'm spending the savings on gasoline. It's a 32 mile round trip to Husband's residence. Gas is around $3.49/gal. here, and my 2012 CRV gets @20 mi/gal.

Well saving in one way to spend in another. Guess that is a good thing! I am sure you don't mind the gas for going to visit.
Hope you are both well this week and that they get the swelling under control.

  11. The last 4 days have been dark and dreary, so kind of sucked the get up and go right out of me. I did stick to my menu for the week, except for today I will be making rice instead of potatoes. I didn't really get to save any potatoes other than the potato soup. They are all soft and wrinkled now. Next year I will be much better at saving them for use past this month.

  12. I have absolutely no idea where January went. When I look back, I wonder what did I actually accomplish? I've actually written goals out for February, to help hold myself accountable. Last week at this time, I was enjoying the warmth of Florida, before the cold front came in and dropped temps into the 40s at night and mid-50s during the day. I returned north on Tuesday and had a bit of tummy trouble for much of the week. That kept me close to home. Lots of sleep and a bland and minimal diet. I'm on the mend and have a full week developing. Breakfast with my daughter this morning, then groceries on the way home, since I have to drive past the big grocery store. Stayed within my budget and got some good sales -- lettuce for $0.99 a head, 18 ct. flour tortillas for $1.49, roma tomatoes $0.99/lb, and small avocados for $0.49 each. I've got 2 widows group tasks to attend to this week, and I'm starting to work on a proejct involving an upcoming major decision I'll need to make. Just need to research things more, pray lots, and make sure I'm ready if/when that decision needs to be made. Ready to conquer the week ahead!

  13. Lovely prayers, very meaningful. I love cashews too, I buy the big bag of raw cashews at Sam's and I love them. Your contentment is a beautiful thing.

I'm making old fashioned organic grits with kerry gold butter, scrambled eggs and ezekial bread toast for supper. Dinner was a spinach goat cheese feta pita with homemade fries for lunch, order at the counter greek restaurant. We went there after visit with my mother, I needed the cheerfulness....She wasn't doing well for the biggest part of it, I went to the nurses station and they assured me she wasn't dying. She's begging to leave *now*. She's having horrible dreams and says her time is coming and do I need to say more...But my mom does have the tendency to say things that are a little depressing like that since even '90 when Zuzu was born and she was married. But this was a bit more sobering. How do we tell what? It's cruel. Her room mate is almost the exact same age within months of my mom, a little dementia going there too, this woman has the sweetest disposition, very good attitude and fascinating story. Born in Spain, went to England during WWII. Apparently ended up here. She was an interpreter and also speaks French and understands Italian. She's an angel and even though she's had surgery like my mom's same day arrival, same hospital, same surgeon, she is looking out for my mom. I was going to wheel my mom to her room after lunch but I looked back and my mom and the room mate were chatting a little so left my mom there, the nurse said she would watch.

Sorry to monopolize if I did. But that's the wrap, I'm just talking to the good Lord about it all.

I'm hoping and praying when she is released she will be somewhat better, the caseworker thought she would be. It's so true, we too just go along with it although yesterday, she knew it was a bad dream. Her roommate does give joy and makes us smile, she was telling mother yesterday, that it would be okay. I know she gets sad too sometimes, I heard her tell the PA but she seems to carry things well even with dementia. I noticed her son was soft spoken when he was checking her in at the surgeon's busy multi doc office that day even when their appointment was canceled and he chose to wait. Most people would have been very upset.

Oh gosh, I hate that for you. Parents do give us a whole new set of problems as they get older. I think that often they just can't admit they need help and that they aren't their old selves. It could be medical as well. You can't do the lifting and carrying - period. If you are it - then she is going to have to get used to it. If she starts berating you on the phone, just tell her NO and lay the phone down for a bit. Sometimes you have to be bold for your own mental health. I am sorry this is happening.

  18. When my mom or my mil with hubs gets like that, we just say....I better go now, talk to you later, bye bye in a pleasant voice and then stay off the phone so it will sink in. My mil can be very demanding like that, not throwing things but she is a guilt tripper, used to getting her way, can be selfish, and doesn't know when to be quiet. I also know how it feels to try to get them to live on their own as long as possible. Back to the grocery delivery, one thing we found, was ordering her groceries where they arrive in the morning hours worked better for my mom's attitude, it didn't stress her out as much. Anything after lunch that even remotely stressed her was a nightmare.

Golly, if you can't ya can't. She should understand that. I know and understand how upsetting this kind of thing can be...there were times on the phone when I was in *trouble* I could feel my blood sugar going crazy and getting burning etc. I'm a sensitive person and have dealt with the problem for years and years, some people are so sweet but have some issues every now and then. It's hard. We try to be good kids, we really do but we have to keep ourselves healthy too and they should not be pushing our buttons like that, right? : ) ...I know...It's very hard. My mom is in rehab now with a broken hip healing, I feel horrible for her because she even calls me mommy sometimes...It's so. heartbreaking. ~Amelia

  19. Thank you for your posts this past week. I have been more mindful of using up leftovers and not making too much food to have so many leftovers. I haven't thought too much about convenience foods, I probably do buy some at some point. I think bread being the most common, I can get it at the bread store pretty inexpensively.

    1. Howdy. Good for you. It really is important to not waste. I try to use everything. I guess bread is convenience - but I don't look at it that way. Bread and buns usually come from the store at my house. Now biscuits that is different!
      have a great week.

  20. Amelia, our mom thinks Sis is either her mom *or* grandmother 90% of the time. It is heartbreaking. For us. She still seems to know who I am on the phone, but now has me divided into 2 Elise's. One who is a young woman, working, but not yet married, and one who lives with her husband in Arizona. So when she's thinking of the younger one, she gets panicky, not knowing where that Elise is. Sis will then call. Mom will be relived to hear my voice and ask if I'm staying with Hubs and Elise. I really think it's harder on us than it is on them. How is the PT going with your mom? Any progress? (((Hug))) --Elise

  22. Hi Elise, The PT is very hard for her I think...But she needs it too. They said they do have her walking with a walker now so that is a relief. I have a feeling we're going to have to keep working with her to make sure she keeps walking, please pray with me about that.

Yes, it tears me up. Yesterday, she was telling her roommate that she was the daughter and I was the mom, and then repeated it just as matter of fact as anything. She said the other day she was wanting to go across the street to Benny Last-name's place because she heard it was nice. Benny was her brother... She gets things very intertwined, the other day it was a dream with a boat, a yellow dress that the daughter made from the old family on the bay, the dad didn't treat the mom right and the dress ended up in a tree after the storm. I think some of it was probably true but very mixed up.

I told hubs the other night after a decent day with my mom, and him dealing with his mom who is 100 that I didn't think we gave our moms this much trouble! lol He laughed and gave a surprised look, and said "Ya know, that's true!" My husband is his mom's go-to out of five kids. The others don't do as much.

Take care now, Elise. Earnestly praying for your dental appointment and *all* that it entails. A hug. ~Amelia

  24. I am trying to go through and read several posts...was not going to comment but then the line about wishing life away...that is what I feel about myself...when an appt is coming up, or something I dread doing, I am always wishing it were done and over with.
