Morning to all. Hope this finds you well on this chilly morn!
Today is going to be a reminder of some things we can make ourselves and feel better about our food. I keep seeing articles posted about how people are all panicking about the 'things' in their food. It has truly gotten to the point that most everything has some item in it that isn't deemed good.
We can make from scratch, and we can make our own mixes and spice combos up and we will know what is in our food product.
It takes a little bit of time - but the feeling of 'knowing' is worth it!
CHERYL'S SEASONING
This is one that I made up - I use my dehydrated tomato skins in it as well as different spices/herbs. It adds great flavor to any dish. I have no specific measurements - just use what you want and what you like and what you have! This is super in soups! You can make your own 'cream of' soups as well. It is so easy to make and wonderful to have on hand. You can make soup, or you can use in recipes that call for cream of soup. It lasts for ages, and you know exactly what is in it!!!!
I love adding this to any soup I am making to make it creamy. You can different spices if desired. It is all about what you like.
Keep all mixes in airtight containers and in a cool and dry space.
It is just so nice to know that YOU can make your own mixes. You don't have to buy the stuff at the store with all those yucky added ingredients.
You can use home grown herbs in many mixes - and that saves money.
Have fun and get creative and MAKE YOUR OWN!!!!!!!
More to come in upcoming days!

Have a wonderful and productive day!!!!
Homemade, custom spice mixes are far superior to anything you buy from the store. Same for salad dressings. If you can't pronounce it, don't eat it.
ReplyDeleteWaiting for the eye specialist to finish with the Farmer. This will be our last trip to Carmel. They are opening a new office in Avon.
It was certainly chilly when we left home a little before eight this morning. Enjoy your day! Each day brings more sunshine and warmer temperatures.
I do believe homemade tastes better too. Simple ingredients are always good.
DeleteHope all goes well with the eye doc and good that one is moving into your town!
Yep, it is quite chilly, but the sun pops in and out.
I love making all my own spice mixes, sauces, dressings, etc. They taste SO much better without all of those horrible chemicals. I grow a lot of my own herbs and dehydrate. I also freeze homemade pesto and fresh basil leaves in an ice cube tray and then bag when frozen. So delicious in the winter. I would add this one that is delicious on meat, potatoes and many other things.
ReplyDeleteChicken Salt:
Granulated onion
Granulated garlic
paprika
turmeric
sea salt
Have a great day!!
I agree so much. It all tastes so much better. Herbs are so easy to grow and dry. I wish everyone did.
DeleteThank you - that sounds like a winner.
Thanks Cheryl. Always appreciated. Jean in Manitoba
ReplyDeleteHello Jean. You are always welcome!!! Enjoy.
DeleteLove this, you should make up a few bottles to sell! You could be like Paul Newman!
ReplyDeleteLOL - well now - there is a thought!!!
DeleteThank you for the compliment. I think I do have one - I will go through my recipes. I haven't made any dressing for a while. I will post later.
ReplyDeleteI always make my own salad dressings. There's an odd taste in prepared bottled dressings, that I think must be the preservatives. I'm looking for new versions to make, so thank you for posting these. They look really good.
ReplyDeleteI do believe the preservatives can cause an off flavor as well. It is amazing to me on just about everything, the difference in taste between homemade and purchased.
DeleteGlad you enjoyed.
I love making mixes and seasonings and having them on hand. I think I will make this a goal for the next month or so. Homemade Ranch seasoning is great to have on hand too. Thanks for reminding me about the spices. This is going on my list of to-do's.
ReplyDeleteYou bet - glad to help. It is just so nice to have all the homemade goodies on hand. Even better is knowing you can do it - and not have to be dependent on store bought!
DeleteI like making my own spices so I can control the heat. For example, I have no red pepper flakes in any of my seasonings. I know other people love it, but it bothers me, so I can leave it out.
ReplyDeleteThat is another great reason to make your own. There are no hard fast rules as to ingredients - so making your own is perfect. You can do what you like.
DeleteI plan on making more of my own spice mixes very soon. I have done so before and need to get back to it. Thanks for sharing your own recipes with us.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
You are very welcome. It's fun and you can mix and match spices and herbs!
DeleteI really want to and need to make my own cream of soups.
ReplyDeleteIt is easy to do and they taste so good.
DeleteI need to refill my spice mixes soon that's for sure. Thanks for the reminder! I recently made up my pancake mix for awhile. Granddaughter is into pancakes and waffles when she comes.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome! Yum, that sounds tasty - I don't balme here, I love both too!
DeleteI love making my own spice mixes and herbal salts. One of my favs in the soup mix department is onion soup mix. It's so good as a cup of soup and wonderful to use in place of the packaged stuff in a recipe calling for an envelope of onion soup.
ReplyDeleteIt is fun isn't it? There are o limits to thing that we can make ourselves! No preservatives - no weird ingredients.
DeleteI too love mixing up my own goodies but it’s just not true there are no preservatives etc. Esch bottle spice you use to make a mix… well it contains the same preservatives as purchasing a mix. Hate to be the bearer of bad news!! Jen J.
DeleteHi Jen. I know my herbs are 100% pure. Sure, there may be a little odd ball stuff in the pure spices we buy or various things - but it doesn't seem as bad as the huge list of nastiness in many store bought/canned things. Many spices I get are in raw form. Cinnamon sticks, whole nutmeg, roots etc.
DeleteBut yes there can be some additives in pure product.
I don't use a lot of spice mixtures, most of the spices I use are just being mixed on the spot. However, we do buy a north African spice mixture that's used in most of our dishes. It's just spices and nothing else, not even salt. But for other mixtures, I make it myself. I have one for chicken right now that's really good.
