So it Begins

Howdy Ho all.  Gosh, here it is Tuesday - you know me, I am still a day behind.  Always am on a holiday.  It seems like Monday - as the neighbors were all home from work yesterday!  Usually Tuesday is my trash pick-up day - not this week due to the holiday.  We will be a day behind.  So yep, I am off!
It is 60* this morning and probably won't get out of the 60's today.  Cool again this week - not complaining, as it will be hot all too soon.
The warmth is to come back starting on next Sunday - a way to start June.  Summer is here.
We may get some showers today or tomorrow - that would be appreciated.

Aren't these neat looking?  A basket of petunias I have.  They look like they were splashed with bleach!  They are very deep purple with the white spots.  The picture doesn't do them justice.

So, I told you Sunday I got the garden all planted last week.  Well, one tomato plant is completely gone and 2 other plants were out on the ground.  I think I am able to save those.  Squirrels!!!!!  Darn them.  I guess they figured it was easy digging for planting their goodies!  Maybe they wanted to plant a garden too!
Anyway, I had to go out and make little wire cages around each plant.  That seems to have worked.  So, tragedy averted.  I have plenty of plants, so I am not going to fret about one.

Sunday I was digging through the closet, to declutter some more.  At the very back, I came across a pair of bibbers (bid overalls) I had forgotten about.  I have had these for probably over 30 years and haven't worn them in several years.  Well, I put them on, and they fit and talk about comfy.  I am in love!  I had forgotten what a comfy fit they truly were.  They are now in my yard working routine of clothing!
Daddy would be proud!

I got to see the flyover on Sunday.  That was pretty awesome.  I almost think it is the sound more than anything.  You can sure hear them coming, the roar is amazing.  We got a few sprinkles Sunday - but nothing much.  I do believe everyone had a good day for their cookouts and such.  Just cloudy.

Yesterday, I heard a chain saw going - and noticed a HUGE pine tree being cut down a few doors down in the alley.  That tree was huge when we moved here almost 40 years ago - so it is very old.  It still looked nice.  It made me sad to see it go, especially because it was such old growth.  Also, years ago, I rescued Fluffy kitty (gone now) from that tree!  She went missing as a little one, and Momma kept walking down that way and looking back at me.  So, I followed. Talked with the homeowner and he allowed me to bring my ladder down to get her.  I had a 10' ladder; I was standing on the top piece (the one you aren't supposed to stand on) and barely reached her!  Mommy recused her - she never did that again!  It sure made me think back, miss her and Momma, and just a sweet memory of that big old tree.

So many things in life change every day.  I hate seeing the old go - but that is the way of the world.  Life changes, and we have to change sometimes too.  Good or bad - it is what it is.

Have a good week and a great day all.
Summer has begun in the northern hemisphere!

  1. We were in the storm cellar last night - Tornado warnings and sirens going off in town.! Sure have been having them frequently.
Have you heard anything from Linda? Haven’t seen her post lately sure hope everything is ok.

    1. That had to be scary! Glad you are ok. It seems there have been a lot lately - it is that time of the year, I guess.
      Glad to have you here.
Linda posted a comment last week at 'Out my Window' blog. I know she has had a lot of computer problems.
Hope your area is all safe and no one was hurt!

    1. Yes, she posted a comment at Kim's blog last week, her shoulder is still hurting from what she said. But she was having computer problems for a while. Was glad to see her post something.

  3. Today is rainy and cool - not even into the 60s! So glad I still have warm clothing out. :) Good day to work outdoors, but too wet.

Sorry about your tomato plant - I've had that happen here too. I don't plant tomatoes now as I seem to have Tomato Blight in the soil. Just hate to find a yesterday-healthy plant all collapsed and blighted. That stuff is fatal to the plants. Maybe next year I'll plant some.

Yes, it's hard to see a big old tree go. A big old evergreen fell on my daughter's house a few years ago. What a mess. Terrible damage. Never know with trees, they can be diseased inside and we can't see it.

My week is all a day-delayed as well. I'm a creature of habit! :D

Is a good day for outdoor work - sorry you can't because of rain.
Oh, things happen in the garden - so I don't fret any more. I have more than enough plants right now.
I well imagine that may be the reason the guy had the tree removed. It was fairly close to his house and it would have been an awful fall. May have been sick - but from my view it looked good.
Sorry you can't plant this year - hope you get some fresh goodies from others!

  4. Rotten squirrels! I'm glad that the cage will keep them from helping themselves.
Isn't it crazy, we are as warm as you were this morning? It's almost to 60F with an expected high of 75F. I'm sure enjoying this warmer weather.
I'm like you, I dislike seeing majestic trees taken down. Unless, of course, they are diseased or threatening to fall. It reminds me, I happened to drive past my old house and the new owner has stripped the bottom three to four feet of the evergreen out front of branches. It made me sad because that cover used to shelter the hares and the Hungarian partridges. I hope they found another safe place in the neighbourhood.

    1. I think the cages will give them a fit trying to dig around the plants.
Isn't that something - and you had snow not long ago! The weather is wonky this year - but I guess to be expected in spring.
I thought about how many birds may be displaced by removing the tree. It sure would have protected some nests.
I think about all the animals too. Wonder what I will see in my yard now!

  5. Squirrels are dastardly creatures! The Farmer covers everything or they will destroy as much as they can. One year we had lots of doves and they went through the gardens like a bulldozer.

Beautiful petunias! I have seen those in the nurseries.

We heard the jets but it was so cloudy over our house that we couldn't see them. That's a lot of people in one place.

Bib overalls! I have never had any but actually they would be practical for gardening.

Going to go out and use the new edger the Farmer bought. We are too old to do much digging and have lots of areas that need attention. Too expensive to hire someone to come in, do it and then maintain it. Hoping it rains today. I put salt on weeds and will spray vinegar on today. Weeds keep a person busy!

    Enjoy your day!

    1. I usually don't have a problem with the squirrels - this year the younger ones maybe aren't so polite. Little butts - they seem to forget who feeds them!
Yes, they said the Speedway was like another city on Sunday! Tons of people - sure glad I was home on the porch!
You need a pair! They are so comfy. I had forgotten how much so. So glad I found them again!
I was out weeding this morning myself. It never ends - you are right. Funny to say, after all the rain we had - but we could use a little.

  6. Your petunias are really beautiful, I always like petunias they come in so many different colors. Your weekend sounded like it was a good one. Sorry about the tomato plant. So far all of ours are still in the ground. Last year we had a time with them though, we had to keep replanting.
*We had a nice Memorial day; we went to our Riverside park and watched the boat races, hydroplanes. We were there for a couple of hours. There was a memorial service and a fly over.
We are suppose to get up in the 90's almost everyday this week.
    Have a blessed day!

    1. Thanks - I love all the pretty new types they have now. So many pretty colors. The weekend was nice and quiet - just like I like!
Usually don't have a problem with plants - but this years they decided to dig. If that is all I lose, I won't complain.
That sounds like a nice time. I know you guys like the boat races. We have a regatta down south every Labor Day, I think it is. Lots of face flying boats. Those flyovers are really neat and something to see. Just chokes you up.
Dang, that is hot. I hope that doesn't move this way!
You have a blessed day as well. Talk to you later!

  7. Oh gosh Cheryl, Squirrels are a menace around here also. I have lost 2 tomatoes and they or something also uprooted 2 zucchini and 2 cucumbers. I was able to replant the cucs and zucchini but had to replace the tomatoes. Thankfully a friend had seeded her own tomatoes and gave me 14 nice starts. I planted all of them some in unused pots. She said if no one wanted them to just throw them away but I just could not do that.
Overcast and cool here this morning, but I have work to do inside so I adapt. I have bread started and the dough for cinnamon rolls. I am making a double batch of rolls because the family can plow thru them.
Lots of allergy/sinus issues for me and I couldn't figure out why? Turns out the cottonwood are putting out the cotton.
About the tree, any type of pine are top heavy with relatively shallow rooting for their height. If the tree wasn't diseased it might have become a fallen tree hazard. I hate that it had to be taken down, the mourning doves love pines and they provide great cover for the doves from hawks and predators. Doves are a heavier slower bird and hawks will pick them off in mid-air, I have see it and it was upsetting. I love mourning doves and they mate for life. Sad.
Holiday weekend has me messed up too, time to get back on track.

    1. Glad you got some extra tomato plants. This is really the first year mine have done any damage. I look at it as all part of nature and we all do what we need to survive. I can't be mad - not yet!!!
The cottonwood is floating here as well - my allergies have been a lot worse. It looks like snow at times.
Your baking sounds good. Always plenty to do inside.
Yes, there is one across the street and every time we have bad winds, I have expected it to go down. Have been anticipating that for almost 40 years! It is super tall and skinny.
I have a ton of mourning doves around. They are so sweet to listen too. The hawk around here, pretty much just goes after small birds - nothing too big. But I imagine if it were hungry, that would change.
It will take me a few days to get back to normal. Seems silly, but holidays always do that to me.

  8. I really hate to see trees being chopped down. One in a nearby garden was pollarded a couple of years ago, but it wasn't a type of tree you can do that to and so died, but it is still standing there and it is such a sad sight. In some ways that is even worse.

    1. Here, topping is a favorite way of trimming a tree. It's very sad looking and many trees simply never recover.

    2. I hate to see trees chopped as well. I had to look that term up - as I had never heard it. I can see that being ok for some types of trees, but sure not all. Such a shame.

    3. Mary - it is just so drastic. The poor tree really doesn't have a chance. Glad few here do that.

  10. Your petunias are so pretty! I would love to do something similar in the flower pots at our office. They would be the perfect pop of color our building needs. Isn't that the best when you find clothes that you forgot about and they still fit? It's like finding a little gift to yourself. I don't know if I found anything in the back of my closet they would still fit, but one can always wish! Thanks so much for sharing!

    1. Thank you. I just thought the petunias were so different. I like different things.
I have cleaned closets, but these were stuck way in the back. I was truly surprised they still fit so well!
I like finding anything thing I had forgotten about that makes me smile and makes life more fun!
      Thanks for being here!

  11. The petunias are beautiful! The squirrel eating your tomato plant reminds me of the squirrel that ate my BIL’s only strawberry one day while he was at work. We still talk about that one. 😂

Very neat that you found the bib overalls and that they’re so comfortable.

    1. I bet the tree was planted when these homes were built, or there abouts. That was 1947. It has been big for as long as I can remember. Maybe the wood will be used for something good. I saw them take huge sections away in special built trucks. They had a lot of equipment.

  14. Our dogs always seem to dig up the garden before the squirrels even get a chance! We're planting next weekend. It's getting warm here too!

I remember overalls from high school! When the knees got to worn, we would cut the inseams and shorten them into a jumper. So lucky you have an old pair that still fits. Denim now has spandex in it, so the older ones are nicer.

Yes these are plain old jean material - the old fashioned kind. You are so right, every pair I have gotten in recent history stretches! Never thought about that before - everything changes.

  15. Petunias are such happy plants (well, they look happy, LOL) and my MIL loved them. I went to the town where she is buried last weekend and decorated my inlaws' graves with a pot of petoonies exactly like the one pictured.

  16. Its unfortunate about the old tree, too bad the community didn't stage a protest against this offense against nature, like the courageous eco warriors often do. As the late great John Lewis said, this would be "good trouble"

    1. The tree may have been in bad 'health' I do not know - but it sure looks naked back there. I hope something good comes from the wood.
It was a shallow rooted type tree, and very close to their home - may have just been time to be cautious.
