Weekly Wrap Up 5/25

Good morning y'all!  Hope you are all well and safe this last Sunday of the month.  Hard to believe in another week it will be June.  It is a cool morn here, but nice.  Not going to complain at all!  It is a little overcast at the moment, but it looks like the day will be safe from rain.  I am sure the people at the track are hoping so.
Whatever you do today and this extended weekend, just take a few moments to remember those who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms.

Yesterday I thought about going to the farm market at the park but didn't.  My fridge is full, and I have more than enough - so stayed home.  What a problem to have - huh?
Friday morning I actually turned the heat on for a couple of cycles!  It was downright 'brrrr' in here!

My frugal week:
  • Mowed and trimmed yard - free exercise
  • Finished planting the garden!  Yes, I did
  • I picked rhubarb, lemon balm and mint
  • Spent most of one day with sis, just telling stories of the past and reflecting.  Great free entertainment.  Took her rhubarb as well
  • My neighbor gave me a pair of shoes!  Brand new - she got as a gift and couldn't wear; they fit me perfect.  Talk about comfy - feels like I am barefoot, yet my feet aren't cold!  The top is like stretchy elastic like material (Nautica)
  • Picked more flowers - peonies and poppies are now done 😓
  • I did put the soaker hose out - just in case I need it in the garden
  • Started working on t-shirt blankie a little
  • I did run to Kroger - got corn, watermelon, tomatoes, strawberries on sale.  Got another 12 pk. of TP on sale, as I just opened one last week (didn't need more now, but replacing).  I also got a 4 pk. of lettuce on clearance.
  • Meals from home and what I have - using up leftovers
  • Laundry - used the dehumidifier water in a load
  • Made a strawberry/rhubarb crisp.  Homegrown rhubarb.  It had been a while - goodness that has been tasty

Meals this past week:
Rustic succotash/pork mixed w/BBQ over rice
Tortilla pizza, banana milkshake
Spicey ground pork burger, fries
Breakfast - sausage, scrambled eggs and toast
Goulash
Baked potato topped with leftover goulash, fresh veggies
Chicken pieces, corn on cob and salad

Kind of quiet around here - the way I like it.  Did a bit of porch sitting the past couple of days, since weather has permitted!  I just love sitting and listening to the birds and watching the clouds!  Peaceful

How was your week?  Any good deals?  Anything exciting happening on your homestead?  I love hearing what you are all up to.  It was nice to hear from new people this week, and some that don't post often.
I hope you all have a great weekend, no matter what you do.  BE SAFE!  Have a wonderful week, and hope you are safe and healthy.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

Lord, thank You for all our wonderful blessings and gifts received this week.  Please help us each move through this week with kindness and caring for others.  Help us to know, that our actions and our words speak loudly to others, and we need to mind both.  Any goodness we can spread is a gracious act and it should speak of Your love and caring of us.  Please guide us each one through this upcoming week.  Amen

  1. Good morning Cheryl. Your past week sounds good and almost relaxing ;). All good here in Arizona, weather lovely and most of the snowbirds have gone away! Thank you for the prayer. Hilogene in Az.

    1. Hello Hilogene - good to see you post. If I remember right you are back from a trip(?) recently. Hope it was enjoyable.
Glad you are getting good weather - do enjoy! I know it gets so hot there later on. The week was really nice - no overextending myself for a change.
      Have a superb week dear.

  2. May passed quickly. It sounds like you're in maintenance mode in your yard/garden. I enjoyed trips to 3 garden centers this past week. The porch is laden with plants awaiting transplanting. There's no freezing temps in the forecast for the next couple weeks. A wagon wheel flower box was repainted & looks lovely with its pansies peaking over the edge. Seasonal musts have been checked off like the annual dental checkup & municipal taxes. A new hydrangea was planted & a solar lamp assembled. Problem with that is I'm usually in bed before dark this time of year so not sure when I will enjoy it! I enjoyed a concert by a family friend; check out Donita Large Music. The neighbor little spent a day with me washing the car, planting some veg, playing hide & seek. In the kitchen: chicken noodle soup; skillet lasagna; peanut butter cookies; pork cutlets; watermelon w/ feta cheese & basil; hashbrown casserole.

    1. It sure did pass quickly. I am glad you are now in garden mode! It is hard waiting for that moment when you get the green light from nature. I guess now it will be all about 'watching' things grow here.
At least others will enjoy your solar light. I see my pretty colored ones out back, when I get up to go to the bathroom during the night. I always look out and check things.
I bet you had fun with the little one.
      Mmmmm - all sounds yummy.
      Have a great week.

  3. Still working on pulling up ivy. There are trees it needs to be pulled out of too. Big job. However, not sure about today... this morning there were 4 bears in the garden and they were still there an hour later. When I thought they were gone I went out to straighten up what they'd disturbed (flowerpots, bed edging) and there was a bear all curled up under a tree! Yikes. About 10 feet from me. I didn't know what to do, so I stamped my foot and said "skat, go, leave" in a loud voice. It jumped up and ran off into the woods, but I'm shy about working out there today. Beautiful cool day, great for yard work. Maybe? Maybe not?

God bless the bears and let them find berries and things they can eat - but not in *my* garden please! Go to my neighbor who loves to feed them.

    1. Ivy is a HUGE job - I have been working on it for years out front.
Oh my gosh, that is too close for comfort! I bet they are pretty, but dang, I wouldn't want them in the yard and garden. You need noise makers out there.
I am with you - leave them alone - but stay away from ME!!!
Stay safe. Have a lovely week.

  4. Visiting with family is so terrific and definitely counts as free entertainment. How neat on getting the new shoes from your neighbor! I have the windows open, the a/c off and I'm airing out the house, and I can hear birds chipping away too. It feels great at only 66 degrees. Your strawberry/rhubarb crisp looks and sounds so good. Sounds like a good week for you, Cheryl. I hope this next week is a good one too.

    1. This morning I actually have a couple windows open for the fresh air. The birds are just so sweet to listen to.
Sis and I always have fun talking and telling stories. She tells me things that she says she would never tell her kids! LOL
Oh let me tell the crisp has been wonderful. I hadn't made one in ages - I just love the flavor combo.
Thanks. You have a beautiful week.

  5. I bought some bedding plants at the beginning of the week but the weather changed, so they are now sitting in cold frames getting acclimatised before I plant them in the garden. Our heating has gone back on too as a family member feels the cold.
I managed to pull my back doing some lifting, so I have been trying to rest up and recover. My husband found some physio exercises online and they have really helped. I am hoping to get out and plant those plants soon, fingers crossed!

    1. I sure hope your weather gets warmer so you can plant. It sure has been chilly lately. I understand turning on the heat!
Hope your back feels better quickly. Take care and rest this weekend.
      Hae a good week.

  6. I've done a whole lot of weeding in the backyard. Today the disposal guy came by and picked up a load of fence boards, some lumber from the garage and other odds and ends. I ran out later in the morning to pick-up a seed spreader and more grass seed. I'm planning to a mix of grass and micro clover. I was able to use a gift card for the seed, but paid for the spreader. Pricey but worth it so I don't have to spread it by hand.
I won't be seeding until the yard has been leveled, and the fence put up...but I'm ready!

    1. Look at you go gal! I know you have been chomping to get outside and do stuff. That spreader will last a lifetime - so good deal. Hope you have good luck with the seed and that the birds don't get it!
      Have a great week.

  7. I like those shoes, I am always looking for comfortable shoes now that I am older.
Question about your lettuce - How do you store it to keep it fresh? As lettuce is one thing I seem to not get through. I did try making lettuce soup once but it was pretty much a disaster!

    1. Thanks the shoes are super comfortable, and I am picky about 'real' shoes. I don't wear them often - so want them comfy.
I take it from the container and seal in a big baggy with paper towels (or a cotton kitchen towel) added & remove air. That soaks up moisture. I can keep pretty long that way.
I like wilted lettuce, but lettuce soup doesn't sound tasty!
      Have a great week.

  8. Wisdom is a true gift, and I need more of it.
My eldest daughter has come to help with her brother for a week. She has taken him back to his house to give me a break, and will come back here for evening meals each night. She will have his house straightened out in no time, as it is a bit unloved in that “ single-man, got other priorities more important than housework “ way.
She will also take him for his two medical appointments this week, so that’s a great help.
No bargains for me this week at all, and to top it off my sourdough mother died overnight during the week. Not sure why, there were no extreme temp changes and everything else was the same as always. I’ll start another tomorrow.
    Take care, Louise

    1. Yes mam, wisdom is a great gift.
So glad you have some extra help this week. You do a lot for so many, so nice that your daughter is there to help with her brother. That will give you a little breather. Hope she gets the house turned away in a jiff.
Sorry the starter died. What a bummer. Good luck getting a new one started.
      Have a blessed week.

  9. A few bargains this week made it home with me. It was my biweekly shopping trip and I managed really well. Think I will be under total budget once again for groceries.
The weather has improved immensely here so I have started planting my flowers on.

    God bless.

    1. Try taking evening primrose capsules. Many research articles available show promising result with this supplement and nerve issues. I started having nerve trouble during chemo ten years ago, the evening primrose oil seemed to help and I had no side effects.

    2. Sorry you can't have a garden. That is a shame. Oh my gosh, having a replacement done and then all that damage! That is awful. You would think that would be a priority - since it was their fault. Gosh, I hope it gets done sooner and done well!!!
I know nothing about neuropathy myself - but I see someone has already posted an idea for you. That has to be annoying, but I have heard that happens after chemo a lot. I hope it goes away soon.
Many prayers for healing and good things coming your way. Take care.
Try to have a good week!

  12. I love those kinds of shoes! I keep a pair like that (mine are Danskin) inside just to wear in the house. That way I always have my orthotics in for support. I try to take my shoes off as soon as I get home, and put the house shoes on.

    1. I am generally a barefoot gal - or maybe house shoes inside. But some days flip-flops are too chilly for outside and these sure are comfy and much better than flip-flops. I would definitely buy a pair.
      Have a great week.
