Weekly Wrap Up 8/30

Hello to all and happy day to you all.  Hope this finds you well.
My goodness, here we are at the end of another month.  On Tuesday we start the beginning of the 'ber' months - which generally means fall and cooler temperatures.  We have had a wonderful week this past week weatherwise, but that will soon be changing.  It is going to get HOT for the whole week!  Looks to be the dog days of summer as they say.  We are to be in the 90's all week and high humidity.  Oh fun - not!
Some call September 1 the beginning of fall - others are starting their spring.  I generally go by the equinox (9/22), not so much the beginning of the month.
It is cloudy here this morning and was 69* when I got up.  Going to almost 90 today.  Kind of hope it stays cloudy - well, the sun is now out some.
My frugal week:
  • Mowed and trimmed the entire yard earlier in the week.  Cleaned the mower well
  • Cleared out the storm drain out front again - it was full and no one else does it
  • Got to have the AC off a lot this past week, and fresh air in the house
  • HARVEST - lots and lots of tomatoes and peppers - cukes have slowed and zucchini is done
  • I did order from Chewy this week - things I can't find around here (rec. in 3 days)
  • Using water from rain barrels to water
  • Picked the rest of the grapes for the most part and have them frozen
  • I decided to go out and get gas before end of month to use my points - saved .40/gal
  • Of course, the station is in Kroger lot - so I just went in to look around.  Didn't plan on buying anything - well, the meat manager knows me and how I shop - and he got my attention and said look at what I just marked down.
YEP, that is 20 - 1/4 lb. burgers (5 lbs.) for 9.80 = 1.98/lb.!!!!!!!!!  I got 2.  Did I need? No.  Will I use?  You bet.  With what I have and these, I am good for a looooong time.  Yippee!!  It pays to get to know your managers at the store!
  • While out I got gas, ran in Kroger, and stopped at the P.O.  Then my car died!  I mean totally - nothing, not even a click.  I could have walked home no problem, but I hated to leave the car.  Called my handy neighbor and bless his heart he was getting ready to go to a funeral home, and he ran down to check on me.  He looked and saw a loose battery cable.  He held it in place and the car started.  PTL.  I got home fine.  He was out all day and evening, so I didn't bother him anymore.  Well, Sat. morning I figured I could tighten it.  I go out to Glen's 'taller than me' mechanic toolbox - open the first drawer I could look in from standing on the floor - it all looked wrong.  Next drawer spotted this little rachet type driver, and it just screamed "use me".  So, I tried and worked perfectly.  It was small to fit in the area and did the trick.  That had to be what it was for.  I do believe G's angel was looking over me to know what to use.  I also checked and filled what needed to be touched up on fluids while under the hood.
  • Cleaned lots of wild stuff (mainly ground cherry) from my perennial bed out back.  Cleaned the back fence row and got the garden weeded again
  • Hummy feed and refill
  • Washing windows inside (nose kisses)
  • Did a lot of 'shopping' from home.  Shampoo, TP and dish soap refills, freezer - found a 2lb. bag of fish in freezer (froze all together) and I had forgotten it.  So thawed and grilled it all for different meals.  Trying to use things I have on hand
Budget friendly meals this past week:
Zucchini boats (from freezer), garlic toast and sliced tomatoes
Cheeseburger and a big salad
'Sloppy Joe' style lil smokies, thick sliced fried pots, tomatoes
Fried zucchini and fried green tomatoes
Grilled fish, garlic toast and salad
Pizza style potato bites and a plain burger and tomatoes
Fish tacos
SNACKS:  fruit, yogurt, PB sandwich, tomatoes

That is about it for me.  I did do some porch sitting and neighbor chatting as well.  Life is full of surprises (good and bad) and we just never know what a day will bring - we need to learn to just plod ahead.
How was your week?  Did you get any deals or are you still getting fresh garden good?  What is on your mind?  I know there are a couple of you from north of me and I haven't heard from you - hope you are ok from all the flooding.  Prayers for all.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.  Wishing you all a blessed week.
***************************

Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing; thou hast loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness, that my soul may praise thee and not be silent.  O Lord my God, I will give thanks to thee for ever.
Psalms 30:11-12

Thank You Lord for all our blessings.  Thank You for helping us each know You and know that we are guided and helped each and every day.  We are so blessed.  I pray we can all go forward and continue to spread Your word to others and be grateful to do it. AMEN

Peace and Joy are All We Want

Good morning my lovelies!  So happy to be here, and happy to have you here.  Hope all are well.
It is another pretty morning here, cool and sunny.  Everything is still wet - we had a rain last evening around dinner time.  It looked and sounded nasty - but we just got a nice rain.  Actually, I was outside for most of it - shielded by the tree for some of it.  Kitties were eating.  I love standing out in the rain!  We have so few it seems anymore, that are just soft nice rains that you can stand in (the child in me). Summertime is coming back this weekend and next week with a vengeance - going back to 90's!  I guess that is how we will start September.  Better than snow - just saying!!!!!!!

I think I am making a few of these this year for gifts.  I think it is so sweet, and I will make them memory pillows.  So easy.
HOME - that special place.

Today is just a bit about each person here, and that stops by here for maybe a visit.  I want this to be a safe place for everyone, and I try very hard to keep it that way.  I want each person to feel loved.  We may not have met in person and only know each other in the virtual world - I think of so many of you as family and great friends.  I pray for everyone and I keep you in thought when you are going through things.
We have no idea what some people are going through - NONE!  People can be lonely; they can be sad or ill or depressed or filled with worry.  Life has a way of knocking us down from time to time, and hopefully we can be here to help pick each other back up!
After all, that is all we can do in this world be there for others and do good.

Isn't this what we all want?
Please know that we all (no matter where we live) want the same thing in the long run - peace and joy in life.  Good things happen and bad things happen, and we have to deal with them all - never give up.  There is always hope and there is always someone out there that loves you (even if you don't know them).
We overcome a lot in this life - even when we think we can't.  It takes time and sometimes work - but it is doable.
Just know that YOU CAN DO ANYTHING!

I know that there are several of you that have started a new season in life, that you really weren't ready for.  Several of us have as well.  Sadly, it is just part of life, and we have to be strong and move forward.  Know there are others here, that will help you through the journey, if needed.

I wish you all a great day and a lovely weekend.
Whatever you do - SMILE and just enjoy the moments.

Old Ways, New Ways, My Ways = Savings

Hello to all this fine day.  I hope you are all good and well.  It is a beautiful morning here and sunny and in the mid 60's.  Windows are open and all is good.  I spent a very leisurely morning outside with the kitties.  They are so funny.  Boy oh boy, do they love me when they see me with food!!!  LOL

I have had the local news on all morning, and there is a lot of coverage today about Dolly Parton.  Yes, she had fame and she had a fortune, but bless her, she put her money to use for so much good.  She sure did a lot of wonderful things to help others.  Things she didn't have to do, no one would have noticed, but she did them just because it was in her heart.  I hope we can all take lessons (on a smaller scale) and do good every day!
Today, just a few more ideas from back in the day and some I have done myself to just stretch resources, help my life and save a little along the way

I know I have mentioned this before, but I bought a pack of black washcloths that I use only in the kitchen.  They show no stains and work wonderfully for dish washing or cleaning up.

I often want a tad bit of soap in something that I want to soak.  I don't ever need to squirt dish soap in the item, just run water over the spout of soap.  Gives you enough to help with the soak!

I almost ALWAYS toast my bread or buns for any sandwich.  It keeps the bread from falling apart easily and it keeps it from getting soggy!

I have old fruit baskets I used to get at the orchard (closed now).  I kept them all over the years.  I use for all sorts of things.
This one gets used daily.  I use for my harvests, and I also use it to take the dishes and canned cat food out in the evening to feed everyone.  Makes it easier to carry.
I have used them for gifts many times.
Place a cloth napkin in one (gingham is cute) or a kitchen towel and then add your goodies.  Maybe fresh bread and homemade jam, sauces and pasta, fancy glasses and sparking fruit juice, etc.  Just makes a cute gift.

I make regular iced tea but sometimes want it flavored.  I am not buying those expensive bottles of tea.  I can add fruit juice, or a bit of Kool-Ade.  You can throw in a flavored tea bag (in your glass) and it will gently flavor tea and keep it from tasting watered down as ice melts.  A lemon or orange wedge is always good too.

Those plastic bread bags - can be used for lots of things.
Can use for homemade bread.  I keep to store homemade biscuits in.  You can use as a secondary wrap for items placed in the freezer - pack several in the bag.  I use to store homemade ice when having company.  I don't pay for ice, just not in me (!!), so I make it and have my own bags of ice.

I have a glass of water on the bed table at night, and in the morning, it is still cool, but not cold, so I just use it on a houseplant.  It keeps my plants watered and no waste.

I run my ceiling fans 365 days a year.  They help keep the house cool in the summer and help distribute the heat in the winter.  Just change direction.  Costs pennies to use.

Never throw away potato skins.  Use them.  A little oil, some cheese and bake those puppies for a fun treat or a great side.  We used to pay big bucks for those at restaurants back in the day!

Organize your pantry and your freezer - knowing what you have saves money.  May keep you from shopping a week or two.

Here is a simple and easy recipe for using what you have for a great bite.
They call it a breakfast cookie - which would be a treat but could be for any time!!!!  Doesn't get much easier.

Now I am going to show you a "fix" I came up with for my mower.  It seems no matter what time of the day I mow, the front grass is still wet from dew.  They can humidity is down and dew levels are down - not at my house!  When it is wet, it clogs up the blow shoot and bogs the mower down.  My mower has the shield over the shoot (for safety) - but it just clogs rapidly.  Sooooooo, I added a stick under the spring area for the shield, raising it a little.  OSHA approved - NOPE!!!!!!
Can you see the stick in above pic?  It fit perfectly in the little space and raised the shield.  Helps to keep the grass from getting stuck in the shoot with better flow.
This shows how it lifted it (looks higher than it is at this angle).  I had just got done mowing, so the mower is still grass covered.  I clean it off and clean under each time.
Again, NOT OSHA approved, and maybe not the smartest idea, but it sure has helped me.  Now the grass is not clogging up the mower and it runs well.  Use your own digression!!!  Do as you feel safe, not as I say!

That is it today.  Maybe someone will get a useful idea to use.  What great tip do you have that just seems to help you out?

Have a beautiful and blessed day and bless someone else today - even it is with just a smile!

Save $, Alternatives, Simplifying

Hello to all this fine morning.  Hope you are all well.
It is a sunny and cool morn here.  Got up to 60*.  Windows open for now as it will get warmer today.  Enjoying this cooler time for a few days, because we will be back to 90*F this weekend.  Summer isn't done yet.
Hmm, seems I have a new cat 'bird' in the grape arbor.  Every morning now, after breakfast, Pip goes straight out and climbs up.  She stays for a few hours - guess she figures it is her quiet time from the kids.

I know I talk a lot about living a simpler life - but as the days go by, it seems more important to learn or revive some ways of old.  Things are expensive, and we all need to know ways to save here and there.  It seems that we all take more from our resources, than we ever give back!!
We need to build skills and talents and learn some control.  We learn and grow - it isn't an all now kind of thing.  It isn't about perfection.  Every home and situation is different, so we do what we can - that is OK.

WAYS TO HELP A LITTLE
Use real dishes, silverware and glasses - not paper or plastic

Try to take cloth bags to the stores.  Many places now, don't even have plastic bags (we do).  IF you get the plastic, re-use them for things - trash bags, pooper bags, some people cut in strips and crochet with them, mom used to make holiday wreaths, line leaky boots, etc.

Use glass when possible - buy things in glass jars if possible, instead of plastic - the jars can be used for all kind of things.  They are great for leftovers in the frig (you can see through them), They don't absorb smells, flavors.  Can be used to hold crafts or hardware.  Use for flowers bouquets.  Can be used for a drinking glass.  So many uses.  Many people around the world do their canning in those jars - as canning jars are hard to get and cost a fortune.

When traveling use an insulated mug or drinking vessel instead of bottles of water.  Bottled water causes a lot of plastic waste, and the water can contain nasty stuff from the plastic.  Cold or hot drinks can be had in the insulated glasses.
Here is my daily glass.  It is insulated and keeps things very cold.  As you can see in front, it came with a metal straw - I don't use it.  It just isn't for me (hurts my teeth) - yes, I use a regular straw, but it gets cleaned daily.  See that little brush?  That is a straw cleaner - and works on even very skinny straws.  I have a bigger insulated mug, that I use when working outdoors, that I keep ice water in.  No waste.

If you do get things in plastic containers - use them.  They make great storage for craft areas and garages.  They are good to send home leftovers to others in (you don't need back).  Use them for something, instead of just trashing them.
Plastic bags, foil, plastic wrap - use it until you can't use it anymore.  I clean bags and foil and re-use.  Look for alternatives to covering bowls in the frig - cloth tops (look like shower caps) can be easily made.

Old t-shirts or clothing can be cut into rags, hankies, washable TP, or scraps can be made into something special - like quilts, pillows, crafts, toys, etc.
Here is a stack of my hankies.  I do have real hankies, but most are just cut up old t-shirts which are very soft and absorbent.  They also make good lens cleaners for glasses - soft and no lint.  Just a hint - if using for your glasses - do not put through the dryer.  Let them air dry, as you don't want any fabric softener on them.
If you get a homemade hankie all messed up, no great loss.  I haven't purchased Kleenex in years.  If I have a bad congestion problem, I will use TP.

It isn't just things, but food.  We all know we can make leftovers into new things.  We can compost.  Skins and peels of fruit can be made into jelly, syrup and juices.  Other peels can be used to help flavor homemade broth.  Bones can be used to make broth.

I know it sounds like work - but it isn't really.  It saves a little money, and it helps save resources.  Think about how many resources of all types it takes to make many of the things we use daily!!!
Don't go and just start throwing things away - that totally defeats the purpose, and they still end up being in landfills.  Use the stuff if you have and use it until it cannot be used anymore - then toss and replace with another and good alternative.  You can also donate - let someone else get use of it.

We all hope our lives can be meaningful in some way - it helps by giving back in so many ways - big and small.  Don't just buy to buy, think about your choices.  We may all have setbacks and failures in doing things - that is ok and normal, just keep trying.
We all need to learn to reduce, recycle, reuse and rot!  Every little action gives back to the earth.

Save a little, learn a little, simplify a little, and find little alternatives.
It is called helping and giving back.
Just some ideas to get you started and to get you to thinking.

Have a beautiful day!!!!!

Weekly Wrap Up 8/23

Hello and happy Sunday to all.  Can you believe there is just a week left in this month?  Then we will be in the 'ber' months - I know many look forward to those!  This week is starting on a lovely note here weatherwise.  That is a wonderful thing - it hasn't happened lately to have a week start out so nice.  It looks like the approaching week will nice as well.  Much appreciated.
I started writing a little late this morning, I was watching the babies playing.  They are such a hoot.  Running and playing and jumping and zoomies!  Morning smiles!

I remember this well.  Company coming for dinner, badminton or horseshoes in the backyard, and front porch sitting.  If you didn't have something, you did without until Monday.  The peace.

My frugal week:
  • Sunday was just a day of all kinds of little projects - too many to mention and just lots of catch up of odds and ends
  • HARVEST - has been good.  Lots of peppers and tomatoes and other goodies as well
  • Got to finally mow and trim everything.  It took 2 days due to all the moisture from dew.  I trimmed both sides of my fences (my side and the neighbor's sides).  I had to rake and blow grass as well, as it was so clumpy - just amazed how much it grew in a week
  • I worked in the front bed as well - pulled out all the done sunflowers and the spiderwort and some ivy - cleared the glass block window in front of ivy - basement is brighter!
  • Made hummingbird feed
  • I discovered a leak in my kitchen ceiling.  It happened twice when we had the huge downpours.  Right over my solid wood cabinets!!!!  My neighbor came over and checked it out and found some shingles loose at that spot - told me what I needed - I went to hardware and got it - and he sealed everything for me.  Fingers crossed that it did the trick!!!!  (no rain since).  He wouldn't charge me a thing or let me pay him
  • I picked a few pounds of grapes - destemmed and cleaned and froze for making jelly later on
  • I did some porch sitting and reading on Saturday - such a nice morning
  • Gave neighbor some tomatoes - he was happy.  It has been slow to get things really ripened
  • I did a lot of general cleaning around the house
  • I did run to the grocery (cat food of course) and I bought several non-edible items for the fall and winter prep.  I did find a few deals as well
Combo beef/pork ground - 2 lb. pack for 4.80, Lobster cakes (a nice treat) 2.45/4, and yogurt at .45 container - got a total of 14
Bounty 6.37 (will last me forever), banana chips (4/27) for holiday baskets 5 @ 1.47 ea. and FREE bread
I also got broccoli and corn on the cob and mandarins on clearance - not pictured.

My budget friendly meals this past week:
Eggrolls (homemade from freezer), chicken bites and fresh veggies
Grilled ham & cheese and fresh veggies
Tuna salad and crackers and veggies & yogurt
Grilled zucchini steaks, corn on the cob, fresh tomatoes & cukes
Beef fajita style (gr. beef, peppers, onions) mix over rice
Smoked sausage on bun and salad and yogurt
Broccoli & cheese, corn on the cob and sliced toms
Grilled zucchini 'steaks'.  Meal cost me about .35!  That was for the corn.
I do not have to meat for every meal - I just love fresh veggies and I enjoy them as I can in the summer.

Allergies have kicked in this week - must be from all the tree and grass pollen, and the moisture around.  I did a face plant this week as well - I did a stupid, and I knew better, but I did it and I fell face first on my hardwood floors!  What hits first - your nose.  Thank God it didn't break but I did get a cut on the bridge of it from glasses.  It is still tender - but all is good.  Seems every week I am reminded of things that I can no longer do!!!!!!!  Grateful for learning a lesson and not getting hurt badly.  Geesh!

How was your week?  Are you getting harvests in or getting goodies from the farm stands?  Doing canning?  Drying out?  Did you find any deals?  Give us a shout out.
I hope this finds you all well and safe.  May you all have a lovely week ahead.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

O Lord my God, I cried to thee for help, and thou hast healed me.
Psalms 30:2

Dear Lord, we send thanks for all our many, many blessings.  Help each one realize that for every teardrop shed and every sleepless night and for every anxious moment, You will be there.  You send Your angels to watch over us and to lead us to You.  Your blessings get us through every situation, and You help us to get through everything we must face.  Thank You for loving us so much.

Plans for the Weekend?

Howdy all.  Hope you are safe and well.  If you haven't yet this week, please check in.  I miss hearing from all you regulars and need to know you are ok.  I am worried considering all the weather events this past week or so.
It is a gray morning, and damp.  We got a big rain over night, not needed, but we got it anyway! Just a little water out back this morning.
I am glad I got a ton of the yard work done the past couple days.  It was harder work than normal, because everything had just grown so much in the past week!  It was tough mowing, and then it took raking and blowing as well - do to the clumping.  The weed whacker just wears me out as well.
Fortunate, I can still do it all.
Please note:  I don't mean to sound gripey - so many have such huge worries right now, and this for me is nothing in comparrsion.

So what kind of plans do you all have for the weekend?  Going to be on the go?  Farm markets?  Canning?  Yard work?  Playing?
Whatever you do, I hope it is the best.
I may end up mowing again by Sunday, just to keep a handle on things.  This rain has just been something for making the grass and weeds grow.  I don't want to be in achy mode I am now, again in a few days!  Dang things I didn't even realize I had, hurts!!!!!!  LOL

I think I will make a version of this as well.
It just sounds so good to me.  I love all kinds of salads, but especially those that last for a few days.  I will be making with cans, not cups.  Super healthy sounding.

Maybe some porch sitting and reading this weekend as well.  A nice relaxing time sounds good.
Let us know what you have planned.

Please know I wish you all the best, and I truly hope none were involved in the extreme flooding or the fires.  I worry about you all.

Take care and have a fantastic day and weekend.

Old Ways - Are Still Normal for Many

Hello to each of you.  Thank you for stopping by for a visit.  Hope this finds you all well.
Kind of a cloudy morn here - we did have a pretty sunrise however.  We are supposed to have some rain yet again later on.  UGH.
Right now, the windows are open, and I have just come in from feeding everyone, and trying to keep Rocky racoon away from the kitty food.  I do love animals, but I am not paying to feed the racoon.   I know, I feed squirrels and birds - but they don't mess with my kitty's food.
Some of you will be happy to know, that I am finally seeing mosquitos!  Just in the last week, after all the rains.
I am really tired this morning, so I am keeping the post easy.  I worked my bum off yesterday outside, and I am hoping to get back out and finish up a couple jobs before rain hits.  The heat and rains really put us all behind and things have become so overgown.  I sure am happy that my body can still move and take care of things - even though it gets tired a lot easier and quicker.

I love these charts.  I have had every one of these and still make many of them (most).  These are just ideas to eat and get full and not spend a lot of money.  I have never felt deprived eating any of these.
(click on image to enlarge to read easier)

Think I have done most of these as well.  I never have had to fetch coal or firewood, although I do remember mom and dad heating the house with coal.  My watch and clocks are all battery, so no winding.  Until a few years ago I did have a coo-coo clock on my wall, and it had to be adjusted every day.  I have made butter and my own ice cream.  You know there are so many little ways to save money, instead of buying or replacing.  Just slow down a little and keep things simple.

Absolutely!  Every one of these are $$$$ wasters.  I try very hard to do all these things.  I run errands at one time and stay home much of the week.  I try not to waste anything.  I am very mindful of my utilities.  We can do with higher and lower temps than we think and still be comfortable.  Don't use lighting a lot.  When making a purchase, buy something that is good quality and not a cheap knock off, it will save money in the long run.

We just need to use things up, make things do, and repair and think creatively.  These things aren't for everyone - but you know, if money is really tight, they sure will help out.  They also help just to be a good steward of what you and the earth has.

Do you do any of these or think that you could if needed?

Have a wonderful day and make it the best no matter the situation.
I'm off to work!

Just a Morning Chat

Hello all.  I hope you are well and safe.  It is a sunny morning here!!!!!!  Haven't had one of those in a while and NO threat of rain!  What a thing to appreciate - but boy oh boy, it sure is appreciated by many.
It is going to be a bit cooler all week, love that as well.  We do have a couple chances of rain in upcoming days, but fractions of inches instead multiple inches.
I have windows open this morning, as it is in the 60's at the moment.  Glorious.
I hope to get out and do yardwork today, but the dew is super heavy this morning.  The grass is just sopping wet at the moment.

It has been a bazaar morning.  I went to get on the computer, and I had to sign into everything.  I don't sign out of most things, so I can just go and check whenever I want.  I had to sign into regular email, g-mail, blogger, and FB.  I have never had that happen before with everything at one time.  I got two notices that I had tried to log in from another device.  NOPE not me!  Sounds like someone was trying to get into my computer.  That is why I do not put important stuff on it.  Scary stuff.

Today, just a couple stories.
I know the flooding has been an issue in IN and other places.  As I said Sunday some have called it a 100-year flood, some a 1,000-year flood, other words used - historical, Biblical.  Entire towns under water - I can't imagine the feelings these people must be having.  Some places were flooded up to ceilings.  Several historical towns have flooded, and that is just so sad, all the history and memorabilia gone.
This is a view of a town just 59 miles due East on me.  There are only 1,700 people that live there - so not a big place - I just wonder if they will ever get back.  Our worst flood in Indiana happened in 1913, and it was horrible.   I actually have an article from the newspaper that my grandmother kept on that flood.
Life sure has a way of humbling us.
There are many resources now available to help those in need - people helping people, even those that are struggling are helping - that is love.  There are also scammers out there already - those people just make me sick.  Anyone that needs to cheat someone in such dire need, is despicable.
52 of our 92 counties have been declared a disaster.  Over half of the state.  So sad.

I was reminded the other day of a situation that happened 14 years ago last week.  It is state fair time here, and that is where a horrible disaster happened 14 years ago.
There was an event planned at the fair, a Sugarland concert.  My nephew and his friends had come into town to be there.  Rain was predicted and there were emergency exists set up, and it was expected to hit at a certain time.  Well, 45 minutes earlier than predicted - a huge storm and terrific wind hit and the entire stage collapsed.  Luckily the band was not out yet.  My nephew was in row 2 center stage.
7 people ended up being killed, all from up front, and dozens were hurt.  If you look at this picture, see the blue arrow on the left, that is my nephew.  He didn't get hurt thank goodness, and he helped to rescue others.  I was so proud of him.
All the pictures that were taken, and he happened to be in one.  It is sure something that he will never forget.

Now for a tidbit that I haven't mentioned to you yet!  You know about Momma and Pip (little mom) and Pip's babies - but a couple weeks ago, I was donated, gifted, had dropped off - 3 more kittens!!!!  They just appeared one day!  Yep, there are 6 young-ins.
Two little black ones, and one charcoal colored one - about 2 weeks or so older than Pip's babies.  Hers are now just 3 months, and these appear just a tad bit older.  In the pic above, you can see all.  The blue dots are Mom and Pip - the blue lines show where the others are.  One by Pip, 2 others on the walk, 1 on handrail, and 2 on deck - Bits checking them out from the window!
Now let me tell you, come breakfast and dinner time, I am one popular lady!  They have dry food to eat all day but get wet food 2X a day.
They kittens all get along wonderfully and play and play.  Talk about zoomies!!!!  Oh goodness, they are a hoot.  Pip, bless her heart is still nursing hers some (even though they eat food) and she lets the others nurse too if they want. They seemed to be weaned, but now and then still want to be babies too.  Momma kitty keeps an eye on them and helps keep them in line.  She even cuddles with them and gives them bathes.  One big happy family.
Yep, lots of work to do to get all fixed and safe.  I have my hands full!
Just call me the cat lady!!!!!

Well, that is it today.  Life can sure be interesting, and we just never know where it is going to take us.
Lots of twists and turns.  Some better than others - yet we get through them and we are blessed.
I do hope you are all safe and dry from the flooding.

Take care and hoping you are all dry and safe.
APPRECIATE your day, no matter what gets thrown your way.

Weekly Wrap Up 8/16

Hello and happy Sunday to all.  I surely hope this finds you well and safe.
It is dry here at the moment just muggy - oh the rain has been awful this week.  I am all good and feel so very blessed, but my heart goes out to so very many people.
We have areas here in the city (closer to river, but minutes away) that are flooded, there are ENTIRE towns under water, loss of businesses, homes, vehicles, farms, crops, roads and bridges, and most sadly - lives.  Some are calling this a hundred-year flood, and even a couple have called it a thousand-year flood.  It has just been devastating.  About half of our state is a disaster area according to the governor.
I know that you gals that have survived hurricanes, can sympathize.  We just aren't used to this type of weather.  After today, we are to get a couple nicer and dry days.
I know I have other Hoosiers here, and some from Ohio and IL (areas have been hit bad) I just pray all are safe.  Even south of here may get the flooding as the river flows south and it is at a level not seen in our lifetime.
Something cheery!!!!  I took this pic at a friend's house a few years back.  It just makes me smile!!!!

My frugal week:
  • I had a luncheon with grade school friends.  Not all are from my class - just anyone that attended the school (no longer exists).  I met a new lady that showed up, that graduated high school and grew up in the neighborhood with my eldest brother (he would have been 89 now).  She is a doll, and I have a new friend, we talked and talked.  I think she enjoyed having someone who knew the same people to talk to
  • Had a spa night at home and gave myself a pedi
  • Have tried to work more out front on the flower bed, as I could.  Dead heading as flowers die back
  • HARVEST  - lots of yummies, keeping me in fresh goods
Anyone have a clue what type of peppers these are?  Came with banana peppers, but very different.  They are not hot.  This is their mature state.  The bush is loaded.
  • Dehumidifier water in laundry.  Does it save a lot?  No - but I hate to just not use it and pour it down the drain.  6 gallons each time I use it in laundry
  • Canned sweet banana peppers rings for sandwiches and pizza
  • Picked up lots and lots of limbs and sticks from storms - good exercise
  • Cut my hair
  • Made hummy nectar
  • Took apart the dehumidifier and cleaned it really well.  It gets a lot of use, and I hadn't cleaned the filters in ages
  • I paid my neighbors older son to come and clean all the gutters while it wasn't raining - I was having overflow in areas.  They were packed solid in spots!  Worth every penny
  • NO grocery again this week
  • Got to put a new hole in my belt!  My poor jeans were drooping
  • I froze some brown gravy I had left from a meal in ice cube tray - will be good in future soups
  • Since I have been in the house a lot due to rain, I have started fall cleaning
  • Using what I have and cooking from home
Meals this past week:
Deluxe smash burger, salad
Out to eat
Roasted cheese and tomato flatbread
Chopped steak w/gravy, jalapeno mac and cheese
Chicken tenders, tom/cuke/onion salad
Loaded nachos
Chicken/veggie wraps
SNACKS - fruit, popcorn and leftovers

I can't wait to be able to get out and cut grass this week and trim again - boy, the rain sure does make the grass and weeds grow!  It looks awful - but I am fortunate that I have a lawn to mow.

I hope you are all safe, healthy and doing well.  Please check in and let us know that you doing well and SAFE!  There have been so many storms and bad weather happening all over.
I hope you all had a great week - let us know of any deals, ideas, or things that have saved you money this week.
I wish you all a safe and healthy week ahead.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

Dear Lord, I come to You with a grateful heart that my family and friends and myself, are safe this week.  Please be with those that have lost so very much, and comfort them and help guide them in the direction they need to go.  Help us all do good things and say good things, not for our own glory or adoration or attention, but let us do them in Your name giving You all the glory.  Guide us each one to be our best person.  I pray that neighbors come forward to help other neighbors and communities, in ways that only individuals can.  Let us all appreciate the little things, as they are often huge in our lives.  AMEN

Living is the Important Part - Stop the Worry

Hello all.  Hope you are all safe, well and dry if in the areas of rain and flooding.
It is a cooler morning again, have to like that.  Yesterday I actually got to keep the AC off all day.  We did get a lot more rain yesterday afternoon.  My area just got rain - no major wind this time.  There is sooooo very much flooding going on - it is horrible.  People have water in their homes and vehicles - so much loss.  It makes me so sad for them all.  All good here.  And guess what?  More rain coming - each day for the next few.
I have windows open at the moment, but that will end later on.

I sure did not want to get out of bed this morning.  Gosh, it felt so comfortable for some reason.  Bits must have been the same way - he didn't come wake me as normal.
I had to run Rocky racoon off this morning - don't plan on sharing the kitty food with it!  It makes an appearance every couple weeks.

Words to live by!!!  Not always an easy thing I know.  I have to catch myself at times, and then I stop and pray - God Your will be done.  I just have to put things in His hands many times.  I don't have the power to change a lot in this world.  I wish I did.  All the worrying we do, generally will not change a thing!  PERIOD!
I think many people spend more time worrying and fretting than living.  Each day is a gift, so please do not waste it.
Many of you gals DO live and have a lovely life.  I am so happy for that - traveling, family gatherings, your singings, volunteering, just staying in touch with neighbors, being a role model for young ones, etc..  All kinds of things can encompass your life - just do something.  Enjoy each day.
Go look at the flowers or the birds or nature in general.  Do a little gardening, sing around the house, dance a little (great exercise), walk, visit with someone, eat the food, call someone, just LIVE!
Life is precious and we have a limited time, which is unknown.  So make it the best.

I know a lot of people are going through a lot - whether it be illness, job loss, flooding, fires, family crisis's - but here you are reading this.  You are here and you are alive, that is huge.  Each and every day is a blessing.
Look at the smaller things that happen in life - they may really be the big things.  We have each and every one been through our worst day ever at some point in our lives, and odds are it won't be the last one.  Yet here we are.  There is a reason you are here.  You all know I have tremendous faith in the Lord, and I believe God has a plan for each of us.  We don't know what it is - but every step we take forward is part of that plan.

I pray you each have a good day and are all well.  Donna, unlike you not to be on here every day - hope all is OK with you.

May your day be good, and may you show kindness and love to others.
HUGS and SMILES!

Use it Up, Make Do and Eat Well - A Few Ideas

Good day to all.  Hope this finds you all safe and well.  It is a very gloomy looking morning here.  I can hear thunder off in the distance.  It is far away, but I can still hear it.  It looks to be another day where we will have storms in the area later on.  Oh boy (not).
Almost every day this week has a chance for storms at some point.  Yesterday got a bit scary in the afternoon.  It got looking dark out, so I walked out back and put the cat food in the greenhouse, and the kitties were all just hanging out on the walk.  Then BOOM - out of nowhere came the wind.  I got the food in and the kitties went running (ended up in greenhouse) and I got back in the door and all heck let loose.
The wind was horrible - 60 - 70 mph straight line winds.  I had a ton of limbs and sticks down (sure cleans out the old trees).  It really scared Bitsy - he stayed in hiding for hours.  Two neighbors to the west had some significant limbs come down.  Yesterday was trash day, so many of the bins were out, and they were tossed like toothpicks - those cans are heavy!  Around the city trees fell and fell on vehicles and one took out a house.  I was so blessed.
Then we had rain in the early evening hours - no wind or bad stuff then.
To the north and east of here, many counties are flooded.  They have had between 6" and 12" of rain since yesterday morning.  Nothing like that here thank goodness.  More to come.  Not a good weather week for sure.
PLEASE if in any of the flooded areas - stay safe.  Do not try to get through standing water.

Something easy. used what I had, and ever so TASTY!  I made this yesterday.  It is a flatbread topped with cream cheese onion powder, sliced tomatoes and shredded cheddar cheese.  I made it in the air fryer.
Oh my goodness, it tasted like the most decadent grilled cheese sandwich ever and a combo of a tomato sandwich.  So very, good and very filling.  I will make again, sor sure.  It doesn't get much easier.
Now you could use anything - tomatoes, onions, peppers, mushrooms, bacon or olives.  You can use whatever you have in the way of cheese.   USE IT UP!  But, let me tell you the taste sensation of the cheese and tomatoes was fantastic.  Great use for those fresh tomatoes!

Here are a couple charts with some good ideas.  New ways to do things and new things to think about eating.  It is great when we can have new ideas using up the things we already have. It sure can save money as well.

If you have an air fryer - it isn't just for fries and wings anymore!!!!   I have not done a couple of these but have used mine for many of these ideas.  I have not made oriental dumplings, but egg rolls are great.  They really do 'freshen' up stale items.  Love it for pizza, fries, chicken, fish and have even made a mini one-person lasagna in mine.  Not a bad $10 deal I got at a yard sale!!! (and I thought I would never use).

These ideas might help someone.  I just wish they could the pictures to match the descriptions.  That drives me bonkers.  But you can read the ideas and find something that works for you and gives you a sugar free and healthy breakfast or even lunch or snack.
Use what you have and get creative.

I know I have said the word so much - but it my word this year.  Get creative.  Use what you have and experiment a little.
There are so many combinations of things that can be made - so many we just don't think about.  There are many ways to fix things and not heat the house or use the power of stove/oven.

Do you have any 'out of the norm' ideas to share that you really like?  Share please!
Give us all some new ideas.

If you are in any of the weather areas or the fire areas, I pray you stay safe.  Leave if you must, and please, please just don't temp fate.  Be safe.
Have a great day.

Pantry Mix & Match Blessings & New Tip

Hello all.  Hoping this finds you all well and safe.  It is a fairly cloudy morning here at the moment.  It is very humid and muggy out, and fairly warm already.  We are supposed to have storms come through later today - UGH.  A nice rain is much appreciated, but storms with torrential rain and damaging winds is not appreciated.  I am ready for low 80's or 70's and no humidity!

After working on the pantries, I thought it might be good to talk about how we can keep a nice pantry, whether you garden or not.  I know so many people do not garden - no shame there.  Some do some gardening or buying from farm markets and put things back for the future - whether canning or freezing.  Some just use the grocery - it is all good!  Do what works for you and don't let anyone intimidate you or say you aren't doing it right.  RIGHT is what works for you.
Here is one of the legume shelves!  I have store canned and dried.  All sorts of beans and many that aren't in the picture.  I lots and lots of pinto, red, navy, lima and black beans on an upper shelf.  Sometimes canned is just the ticket for me, other times, I want to have the smell and slowness of cooking my own.  I mix and match.
My kitchen freezer after re-arranging.  Both fresh and pre-made - some days I just want things easy.  Don't judge me - this IS straightened!  I have all things together in categories.  The blue basket is all packets of ground beef.  That is something I use a lot, especially since I have found such good clearance deals recently.
Here is a side view of the daily pantry.  There is home canned and premade.  I have lots and lots of rice and pasta in there as well - all jarred and sealed.  Cans of soup, baking goods, and other dry goods like breadcrumbs, cornmeal, wraps, etc.  It may look like utter chaos to some, but I know what I have and it is in categories.
However, you do your pantries and/or freezers is up to you.  You know how you use things and how often you use things.
Buy what you will use and please USE what you buy.  Getting a deal and then not using it - is NO deal.  It is just throwing money away.

I had been planning on writing this after the cleaning, and then I watched a video by Little House Living, and by golly, she was talking about the same thing.  People were bad mouthing her because she had store bought goods!!  WHAT?  That is crazy.  Some things are just cheaper to buy, than to can or freeze and yes, you can buy premade goods that are natural and nothing added.
I think people think growing and canning is the cheapest (only sometimes) but it is so much about knowing what is in your food.  You can control chemical use, and you can control ingredients.  You can buy many all-natural goods - I see veggies in water with no other ingredients and I see fruit in natural juices with no sugar added.  They are out there.  OR you can buy frozen as well - they stay pretty natural too - it just takes a little looking.
So do what works for you.  After all it is your home and you are the one eating it.
*******************

Now here is a TIP - we have all heard of placing charge cards or money in containers to hide in the freezer for safe keeping.  Well, I heard a friend tell a story yesterday that made me think about the cash idea especially.  They had a family member pass away, and at the funeral a relative asked the daughter, if they had cleaned the frig out yet.  Answer - yes and we threw everything in the trash.  This lady had a LOT (major amount) of cash in the freezer and the daughter didn't know!!!!!  Out in the trash.  Oh my.
So the TIP is - no matter where you may have money hidden, make sure someone that you trust knows where it is and that they hopefully will be in charge of eliminating things from the home, if you pass on.

There are many places to hide things that would never be thought of.  In ceiling vents or in jars in floor registers.  In a jar of dry beans or rice, freezer, in a book, under drawers, etc.  If you are ever given the chore of cleaning out someone's home - just check everything.  Have a trusted person know where you have things hidden.

I hope you are having a good start to the week.  If you are in the path of storms - be safe.
Have a beautiful day.

Weekly Wrap Up 8/9

Hello and happy Sunday to all.  Hope this finds you all well and safe,
It is a muggy morning here today and it will get to about 90*F.  We have a day or two more of this heat then we are supposed to get back to the low 80's and less humidity.  That I like.
I have been out to feed, and they kitties didn't eat as much this morning.  Pip is starting to get them more independent.  They aren't quite 3 mos. yet and still nurse a little - but she is taking them out on walk abouts (across alley) and they are getting a lot more active and exploring.  Hunting as well.  Momma cat and Pip sure are cicada hunters!

My frugal week:
  • Used rainwater as a final rinse for my hair - made it so soft
  • Used dehumidifier water in laundry
  • HARVESTING the garden - tomatoes are really picking up, cukes, lots of peppers and zuke
  • Went through some sealed totes I had and found a lot of long-term food items I had forgotten.  They are now in sight and ready for use
  • I did a HUGE clean and organization of the deep pantry and the regular pantry.  I am so very blessed with goods.  Some non-food items, that I will probably never have to buy again.
  • Vacuum sealed a lot of jars of dried goods. (that gift got a lot of use!)
  • I straightened and organized the frig freezer - have the big freezer yet to do
  • Made some stuffed banana peppers with cream and cheddar cheese seasoned with onion soup mix.  Froze to have later in air fryer
  • Mowed and trimmed the entire yard.  First time in ages that I got the yard all mowed and trimmed in one day!  I am having so much more energy.  Did a good trim and clean behind the shed, and worked in the front flower bed some
  • Did get some days of windows open and no AC earlier in week
  • Met a new neighbor.  They have only lived on the other side of alley for 20 years - about time we meet!!!!
  • Picked rhubarb
  • Picked a couple handfuls of grapes to eat - a real treat.  They are starting to ripen!!
  • Got some blackberries out of the big freezer and mixed with the rhubarb.  Used some on ice cream, and made a little cobbler and still have syrup left
  • NO grocery or spending.  Did not leave the property this week
  • All the regular stuff - lots of dusting, dust mopping and vacuuming.  I sure get a lot of dust 'kitties'.  Cleaned nose prints from windows, using what I have and cooking from scratch
  • Made zucchini boats and made extra to freeze.  Used corn instead of rice in filling this time.  Used the oven but also made the cobbler at same time.

So good
Meals this past week:
Fried egg sandwich and pasta salad
Grilled burritos (homemade/freezer) and salad
Fried okra, corn cob and toms and cukes
Egg roll bowl
Potato bites and chicken fingers (air fryer) and toms
Stuffed zucchini boats and sliced toms
Fried green tomatoes and fried breaded banana peppers (new try and good), sliced toms

I managed to keep busy this week and did get a lot done.  As we pointed out this week, it is all about just getting started.  I am good about finding excuses to not start, but I just made myself get up and do it.  So much more to accomplish!
I ended up with a big old bruise on my arm - no idea how - about gone now.  I also got blisters and lucky me, more poison.  But I survived it all - life is good.

How was your week.  How are the gardens doing?  Anyone doing any canning or freezing yet?  Probably won't be long here.  Did you find any good deals or markdowns?
Give us a shout out - love knowing how everyone is doing.

I wish you all a super week ahead and many smiles.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

Accomplishing Feels Good - Like Finding Money!

Hello and welcome to all.  Hope everyone is well.  I sure appreciate you taking a moment out of your days to stop here and visit for a bit.  It means a lot.
It is a nice morning here.  A bit more humid than it has been for a few days, a little cloudy, chance of light rain - but here we are!!!!  We are alive and getting to experience another day.
I am tired this morning, and sure thought it would feel nice to stay in that bed a little longer - but there were mouths to feed!

LOL - who hasn't heard almost all of these in some part at some point in your life?  I sure have - and many I still say.  All pretty good advice in my book!

I have kept fairly busy this week so far.  I have had a lot of projects that I have been wanting to accomplish and by dingy I started on them FINALLY!
I have spent a good amount of time working on the pantry and the deep pantry.  I went through some totes and found goods I forgot I had purchased (for long term).  So, everything got rearranged and organized and sorted and jarred and categorized and cleaned..........
It sounds HUGE, but it really wasn't so bad once I got started.  It was just getting started!!
So, for now, the daily area is done and the big deep pantry are pretty much done.

I still need to do the freezers - frig and upright.  Maybe I will tackle the frig freezer today.  I also have a lot very old home canned goods - have just gotten forgotten - that as badly as I hate it, need to be emptied and the jars cleaned.

I tell you I have found out there are many dried goods and many non-food items, that I will probably never to have to buy for ages.  Goodness, being a deal shopper and an old couponer - has left me with many non-food items that will last and last.
It is now time to stay out of the grocery for the most part.  Occasional milk and cheese and of course pet food - that should do it for me. I have lots of fresh from the garden for now.
Keeping the pantries and freezers really organized is a HUGE money saver.

I also worked in the yard a lot too.  I really do feel accomplished.  But as busy as I was, I made sure to take time just for me as well.  NO naps, but I have had walks and neighbor talks, and reading and porch sitting.  Just keeps me decompressed and happy.

I have a list of so many things that need to be done around here and things I need to declutter and just need to dig into.  I truly want my home in order!  I mean it is decent now, and it always looks cleans - but you know what I mean.  So much that we put off and just avoid and need to get rid of.  We all know the old saying "out of sight out of mind" - YEP!!!!!!

I hope you have all had a good week so far and wishing you a good weekend.  Get up today and do something that you have put off (no matter how small or large) - it will feel good to have it done!

Have a wonderful day!!!!!!!

Calm Home & Life - Cost Nothing

Hello to all.  Wishing you all well this fine day.  It is a beautiful morning here.  Cool and the sun is shining.  I have the windows open and fresh air is coming in!  I have been able to keep the windows open over half of the day, then have to close do to heating up outdoors.
The water has all dried up out back, but it sure smells 'wormy' out there!  I really would like to mow out back today, but the grass is sopping wet with dew - will see how long it takes to dry out.

Just do it.  You can bring back anything you want and enjoy the calmness of the days gone by.

It seems we all need more peace, comfort and calmness in life.  Life is so busy and everyone and everything seems to be in a rush!  There is always 'noise' to distract us and to try and keep us occupied.  I like a restorative kind of life.  Porch sitting!!  I know people truly love all the gadgets and apps and electronics - I do not.  I have no problem doing things the old way.  Absolutely NOTHING in life is that important that it has to be handled this very moment in my opinion.

I watched a video yesterday that really had an impact - so I thought I would relate some of their ideas.
  • Keep meaningful things around you - things that elicit memories and thoughts of people you love and places you love.  When you see them, you smile.  Or they may just be there, and you don't 'think' you look at them each day - but odds are you do and they give you comfort.
  • Pause when you come home from being out.  Take a moment to walk in and just BE in your home and breathe.  You are home and that should be comforting
  • Use what you have.  Repurpose things, move things around, instead of buying and spending.  Sometimes just changing up the view can feel wonderful - redecorate for nothing
  • Let nature in.  Plants, fresh air, cut flowers, herbs, a basket of fruit on the table - something natural - it just feels like home
  • Have a quiet place.  It can be a favorite chair, a spot by a window, or a room, or maybe a balcony or place outdoors.  Someplace that you can decompress and just breathe and get your mind back in tune
  • Make meals quietly.  Maybe make some simple meals, in a slow pace - don't always rush.  Sit at the table and truly enjoy eating the meal - enjoy the flavors and taste and company if you have someone else there
  • Use subtle soft lights after dark.  We see so much brightness all day, and even with TV/computer distractions.  Soft lights calm - that is why Christmas lights always seem so enjoyable and soothing in a dark room
  • Keep around calming smells.  It may be fresh air or coffee brewing or candles.   Scent can be so very soothing - scents seem to take us somewhere else
  • Keep your sleep place calm and uncluttered.  It needs to be a relaxing area - not a lot of distractions
  • Keep your home in order daily.  Do a little here and there - you don't have to bust butt to do it all at once.  Laundry one day, vacuum or dust another, pick up as you go.  This way the house always feels clean, and you aren't rushing around - it is not overwhelming. Slow and steady - always wins!
  • Don't worry about what you don't have!  Getting that next new big thing, isn't always satisfying and often you have to work hard to get it.  Concentrate on what you HAVE and appreciate it.  What you have is home and makes you feel safe.
All things we can do and they cost nothing.  Anytime we can reduce stress and the rush of the world, is a good day.  Make your house a home!  It is yours and you can just BE when you are there.
Enjoy your home and just keep it calm and relaxing - a peaceful home is wonderful.

Have a wonderful and blessed day.
