Hello all - hope this finds you all well. I have missed seeing some of our regulars again lately. I sure hope they check in soon.
It is a wet morning here, which is much needed. 66*F this morning. Looks to be going to cool down some after today, then back up next week. Yesterday was absolutely beautiful. It was a great day to be outside. I had my windows open all day yesterday.
I have seen all the reports of the rains other areas are getting and it is horrid. I have seen reports from homes washing away in CO, news from AZ flooding, and now FL - I saw a FB friend post yesterday that her house, yard, stables and everything is flooded (in FL) and that they were trying to help their animals. It is all so very sad. I hope none of you are experiencing any problems. Prayers for all involved.
There are some new ones on this chart for sure. Have you heard of all of them?
Now I have heard of smidgen, pinch and dash - but never of hogshead, firkin or gill!!! There are some funny ones to me. Maybe some are foreign, I am not sure - but I like seeing these things.Yes daddy - I learned something today!!!!!
Now this was listed as things our Grannies and Mommas always did to watch their dollars - they said no one does these anymore. I do!!!
#6 - not really since it is just me. But I do buy extra when they deal is right.
#27 - nope. I keep my computer, and tv's plugged in. Small appliances I do unplug unless needed
#29 - I am not the best at this. Not that I buy a lot - but I don't always follow this rule
#4 - don't drink coffee (can be a huge savings from what I hear)
I pretty much do or have done the rest at some point.
I don't see it as old fashioned, just good old common sense.
What say you? Are these all known to you?
I find things like this just fun, and they make you wonder where they came up with the phrases or words!
Wishing you all a super day.
Go out and chat, smile and be kind.
My daily thankful: I am so thankful for my Lord and Savior and my faith, both sustain me. I am thankful to know He carries me and holds me sweetly and lovingly.

I'm a frugalista; I do most of these things. I unplug electronics & turn the hot water tank down when I'm away for more than a day. Like you, it just makes sense to me. I asked my mom once about knowing when the oven in a wood stove (without a thermostat) was the right temp. She opened the oven door, put her hand inside & said, "Like that." I once calculated the amount for a bushel of apples for an old chutney recipe. If my calculations were right, 1 bushel = 48lbs? It's 8AM here & the morning sky is putting on a light show!
ReplyDeleteit does just make sense. So many don't see it.
DeleteThat is one way to tell if the oven is hot!!! LOL! They just had that extra sense to know things.
I have lists somewhere on produce and weights. I think I listed on the blog a few years back.
Sunrises and sunsets are such beautiful gifts.
I love the lists. Most of the terms I knew from a child. I do turn my electronics off at the power bar every night. I also keep my stove and microwave off at the and only turn on when needed. I don’t need the stove very often as I batch cook. Jean
ReplyDeleteI have a gas stove - so that wouldn't be feasible for me. My microwave has a lug that is just too hard to get to.
DeleteI think you gals are smart for doing this.
Your daily gratitude is precious! Where would be be without our Messiah?!
ReplyDeleteThe vintage terms are interesting. My mom's favorite measurement was "a dib". My brother Claude said that it was probably half a dab. ha! We follow many of the things on the list, except for unplugging electronics. Buying coffee out is a joke. Remember the days when people didn't carry around some sort of drink? Are they going to die of thirst before they get home?
Need to check on my laundry. Trying to get some things done before I have to leave. Stay dry!
We got some rain overnight, but not like some places. My heart goes out to the people who have severe damage and even some loss of life. I'm going to the dentist at 1 pm and hope it's not raining then. Don't care to drive in the rain.
I know I wouldn't be where I am or who I am without Him!
DeleteI can't believe people buy coffees out every day. I have a cousin that posts from somewhere every single day about the fancy coffee she is having out. I just shake my head.
Oh the damages from the rain are horrible for so many. God bless them all.
Love all the vintage things! I've heard of Hogshead, Firkin, and Gill but I didn't know how big they were, only that Hogshead was large! :D
ReplyDeleteI went very vintage today. The Chimney Sweep was coming and I had doctor appointment - and they were both going to happen more or less at the same time. So I left my house open for the Sweep. I was very twitchy about that, but I remember when I was young we did not lock the house unless we were going away for many days. Did not need to. The Sweep came and did the job before I got home and all was clean and neat. :)
On that list, I don't usually do 2, 6, 13, 21, 27. Most of the others I do regularly.
Cool mist and now drizzle here, turning to rain. Glad the Sweep finished: roof is slick when wet.
MaryB
That is wild - I had never heard those terms.
DeleteOh my goodness, a chimney sweep - hadn't heard that in a long while. I am guessing you have a wood stove or fireplace. Glad you got that done.
We never locked the house when I was a youngster. No one did. I lock mine when I go into the backyard today!
When I first bought my townhouse 35 years ago I asked a neighbor who I should get to clean my dryer vent which vented to the roof. She said the chimney sweep! That is who I called. Now there is a dryer vent company. Barbara M.
DeleteWell that makes since. Would have never thought of that.
Delete:) Nowadays I lock my house (day & night) even when I am *indoors*! So I felt really odd about leaving it open. Yes, I have a woodstove. It's been right useful over the years. Pretty cool about cleaing that dryer vent, I'd not have thought of that.
DeleteMaryB
I keep mine locked even when indoors as well. In this day and times, you just can't be too trustful. I had my neighbor come by one day, and I was unlocking the door, and he said "you afraid someone is going to get you?" My answer - Maybe!
DeleteI do about half the items on the chart. One I don’t get is using cash instead of cards. I use a card that gives me 6% back on groceries (and also my most expensive eye drop because I get it at the grocery’s pharmacy.) For most other things I have a card that gives me 1 1/2% back. And I just got a new card from my bank that gives me 6% back (plus bonus because I have $ at that bank) in one category for the first year and then 3% after the year. I can change the category every month. (I’m probably going to use for travel most months.) No fee for the card. I never carry a balance.
ReplyDeleteI’m depressed about the Florida election results. The property tax amendment passed. I’ll save about $1,500 a year but what will happen to the sheriff’s office and my bigger concerns, libraries and public transit? (School taxes will still have to be paid, thankfully.) Our property taxes already can increase by no more than 3% a year. We have no state income tax to fund some of our needs. I’m glad I’m old with no kids or grandkids. Barbara M.
I earn points that I can use on CC - and I use for bigger things. I just prefer cash - call me old fashioned. Cash is going to die out because of me!! LOL
DeleteNo income tax does make a big difference.
Firkin and Gill sounds like a firm of solictors in a novel by Charles Dickens. Perhaps they have an office in the same street as Ebenezer Scrooge! Sorry, couldn't resist it!
ReplyDeleteI have heard of a lot of those measurements but some were completely new to me.
LOL - Yes it does!!!! That is funny.
DeleteI found some new ones to me as well.
It is a wonderful day to be wonderful!
ReplyDeleteAMEN to that sister!
DeleteWe just had a heavy shower roll through and now the sun is shining making everything super sparkly and twinkling.
ReplyDeleteI am going to a meeting tonight about the establishment of a swap/ trade/ barter place in out community. A boy, now a fully grown man but will always be a boy to me, that my youngest went to school with, is looking to start one. I hope it gets off the ground, it should there seems to be support and this kid is an achiever.
I do a lot of things on that list because it makes me happy to think I have made the most of what I have. I was cutting up a shirt yesterday to use for rags and I remembered that I had bought it when my eldest just started school. I needed something suitable to wear to my first school event night. It was a button up collared shirt in a lovely shade of lilac which I wore with denim jeans, I certainly thought I was the bees knees. 30 plus years later, the shirt is rags but I sure got my $7 worth from it.
Take care, Louise.
We got sunshine for a bit after all the rain, now it is dreary looking again.
DeleteHow cool is that? That is a really neat idea to have in a community - I think that would be a hit in most communities. Good luck with it.
Yes, I like getting the most of things, especially my money! I am really not a tight a**, I just like playing the game.
I would say you got the most you could with that shirt. It will still be working for you!
I always enjoy these types of lists. I love books that talk about "older" ways and how things were done. They always seem to be so much simpler and I enjoy getting a glimpse into the ways of homemakers from different eras.
ReplyDeleteIt is fun. I love learning the old ways or at least reading about them. Life was different then, and that wasn't all bad.
