Fun Day - Lore and Sayings

Let us have a little fun today!  I said something the other day to a friend - and they said 'where did that come from?".  It was one of those little things our parents said, and we learned as we grew up.  The tales, lore and superstitions of old!  There are many today who still believe!!!!!

Many make sense - but not for the reasons that they were believed.  Here we go!!!!

Cardinals in your yard are visiting angels!
Kind of like to believe that - let's just if it is, I have a lot of visitors.  It makes me smile - so that is all that matters.

Chicken soup cures a cold!
May not cure it - but it do make the nose run.

Black cats cross your path is bad luck!
Nooooooo - love me some black kitties

Knock on wood for luck!
Never understood that one - but I still do it (usually knock my head)

Breaking a mirror is 7 years bad luck!
Hmmmmmm - I have broken so many

Apple a day keeps the doctor away!
Can't hurt

Going out in the cold with wet hair will make you sick!
My goodness, I did that EVERY single day for years when I worked.  I was healthier than most

Your nose itches someone is coming to visit!
Your ears itch - someone is talking about you!
Your hand itches you are coming into money!

Walking under a ladder is bad luck!
Only if someone drops something on you - LOL

Shaving makes your hair come grow back quicker and darker!
It sure always seemed so to me

Pick one gray hair and you will get 2 more!
I'd be bald if I picked the gray - LOL

Starve a cold and feed a fever!
I always did this - still would IF I got sick

Red sky at night, sailors delight
Red sky in morning, sailors take warning!
It seems to be the instance often

Find a penny, pick it up and all the day you have good luck!
At least you are a penny ahead

Wishing on the first star to make a wish come true!
Sweet sentiment - never worked for me

A women shouldn't can food when on her monthly!
No evidence whatsoever to prove that correct

Death always comes in three's!
Sometimes it does seem so

Toss salt over your shoulder if you spill something!
Supposedly this was to blind the devil standing behind you that is causing you grief (I always thought it was for luck)

There are just so many superstitions, lore, tales of old, whatever you call them.  They are fun to read, and many kind of make sense!!! (in some way)
There are hundreds that have lived through the ages.  Many were for particular areas of the world.  Our ancestors brought them with them and here we are today - still repeating them!

What lore do you remember?  I am sure I have missed many popular ones.
This should be fun!!!!!!

  1. My Grandmother said that if there was enough blue sky to make a Dutchman's britches the sky would clear up soon!

    3. That was one of my Nan's sayings too. I did look it up once to see how much blue sky it would take. Can't recall what google suggested. :p

  3. Old sayings and old wives' tales are plentiful. My first husband's mother said that if you raised your arms over your head while pregnant, the umbilical cord would wrap about the baby's neck. Also that taking a tub bath would bring on a miscarriage. She was a well-educated woman with a masters degree in education but sometimes dumb as a box of rocks.

    Beautiful sunshine today! Yay!

  4. Generally speaking it would have been a poor servant who broke a mirror, they would be expected to pay for it and mirrors were costly items, so they could be paying for it for 7 years!

    1. OK - that makes sense. Never heard the reasoning before!
      Thanks for the clarification.

  5. I love these old sayings, here are a couple.

One swallow does not make a summer.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
    (Especially anything electrical!)

A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.

Life is not all beer and skittles.
( In the UK skittles is like 10 pin bowling but with 9 pin)

My Nan used to say 'get anywhere' to my sister and I when we were small, if we got under her feet, I now say that to Freddie dog :)

  6. When I was a young teenager and starting to show an interest in boys, my mother told me, "a woman can run faster with her skirts up than a man can with his pants down." That was the extent of our talk.

My Dad had a saying that he used often - because he wasn't a particularly good handyman - a blind man riding by on horseback wouldn't know the difference. I still use that one.

Another favorite from my Dad that he'd say when we getting in the car to head home from a day of shopping in town. Home James and don't spare the horses.

These are fun to remember. Thanks!

    1. LOL - well I guess mom made a good point!!!!! That is hilarious.
I have heard the other two before, as well. Home James - was always a dad-ism.
His other that I still use - want in one hand and s**t in the other and see which gets full faster!!!!!
Thanks - I had forgotten that one for a while.

    2. Maebeme, my Pop also said, Home James and don't spare the horses. :-)

  8. My Pop (stepdad) was born and raised in the south. He had some good ones that always bring a smile:
Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
Ain't all that and a bag of chips.
If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.
You can't teach an old dog new tricks. (disagree with that one)
Where are your raisins, in a box? (remember how you were raised)
As I think of more, I'll share. Still on my 1st cup of coffee. LOL!

  10. My Nana always said if your nose itches you're going to kiss a fool. If you drop a knife it means that company is coming. If you marry in haste you'll repent at leisure. If your palm itches it means that money is coming. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. A stitch in time saves 9. It's interesting and fun to see all the superstitions. On an off topic, I just received Tamara Adler's (The Everlasting Meal author) new cookbook today. It's more than I ever expected and over 500 pages. I'm looking forward to sitting down this evening and starting to read it. Cookie

Red grapes were on special at my grocery! That means dessert will be lightly sweetened yogurt or cottage cheese with grapes. :)

  12. I saw my first cardinal in the neighborhood this week. I do think of it as a "visitor" from a loved one who has passed. And red sky at night ... always some truth in that! A classmate once questioned something I said with "what's that got to do with the price of rice in China?" Huh???? But I always laugh and smile when that saying comes to mind.

    1. I see cardinals each morning at sunrise and each evening at dusk. I like to think I am being visited by loved ones to start and end the day!!!!!!
LOL - Yep, I remember that one too.

Even words take people back. One day I was talking to a niece and nephew and said something was all caddywampus - and they laughed for an hour. They had never heard that word before.

  16. Oh cardinals! Yes! I noticed the signs of cardinals before I ever heard what they stood for, and I believe it. : ) You would not believe some of the signs I've received from cardinals and I make no apologies to anyone on that. : ) One morning after one of our daughter's weddings (God usually sends some kind of sign from loved ones in His way) I heard a loud singing, warbling sound. We don't have warblers here that I know of...I could not figure out where the unique singing was coming from. I looked to my left and I see a beautiful bright yellow bird and a beautiful red cardinal side by side looking in at me singing their little hearts out!

When one of our little dauchsund passed away suddenly there was a white feather that appeared on my daughter's black jacket. A beautiful huge owl came swooping down close too that next morning...We've had pennies drop down before in our home. Our daughter exclaimed...Where did that come from?! Pennies from Heaven? Maybe so?

Some of the little things I've heard was my Italian mom saying it's bad luck to buy basil already planted and grown, you must start with seed. Also, raining on a wedding day brings good luck. And she's a real stickler on her cabbage and black eyed peas on New Years eve. lol My Italian grandma used to say that you never gift anyone with a knife or knives.

One of my favorite sayings is when I see a patch of blue in the sky I will say..."Just enough to make a Dutchman's britches!"

You must be a toughie! Haha! I cannot go outside even if it's cool with wet hair, I end up with a sore throat! Found that one out when I was around 20.

My dad used to say: "Sin in haste, repent in leisure".

Hope you are doing well this evening. I've been with our Littles, I played a game of Candy Land with a very old vintage-look board with the little girl & boy and then Pick up Sticks with one of my little four year old grandsons...So sweet! He's enjoying reruns of Mr. Rogers too here today that I recorded. He loved them...

  17. A few more: If you drop the dish rag you'll have company before it gets dry. It's bad luck to carry a shovel through the house. If someone sweeps under your feet you won't get married that year. If it rains and the sun is shining it will rain at the same time tomorrow.

  19. I always heard you should feed a cold, and starve a fever. That way works for me. I feel like if I eat stuff when I have a fever the fact that I'm overheating as is just doesn't end up sitting well with the food, and then it comes back up.
