Re-Crafting - A new concept store

I was pleased to read an article in the Sunday paper about a new store that is just up the road a bit.  This is actually about 6 minutes from me.
I can't wait to go check it out after the holidays.

The store is called Re-craft.
The gal that started it, has traveled a lot, and said she had found similar stores in other states - but none here.  Basically it is donated items that can be sold cheaply to others to use in craft projects.  No waste, no trash, no filling up the landfills.  It basically takes sustainable living one more step up.
I LOVE IT!
It's kind of a thrift store JUST for crafting.

They basically carry it all.  They have fabric, sewing supplies, any needlework items, fine art supplies (paints, beads, scrap booking, art paper, etc.).  Any type of crafting supplies can be donated.
They also have weird stuff like mannequin heads and body parts and wine corks!

To make it more of a community destination there is a sewing machine, an industrial serger, and a screen printing machine that can be rented by the hour or day for a small fee.
She also offers classes on all sorts of things.

This store is just on the outskirts of a very old community, that is suddenly becoming the 'hip' place to live and be again.  Homes are being updated and renovated, and businesses are coming back, and it is becoming a great artsy scene.
**************

I just think this is the coolest concept.  Every community should have something like this.  Perhaps some of our readers can develop something like this in their areas.  It wouldn't have to necessarily be a store - but a gathering place for a community of friends and family  to share and re-use supplies.  Perhaps a garage, a basement, a 'she' shed, or a local building all can get together to rent.  What fun!

I follow some folks on FB that basically have made a lot of extra money this season, by using up odds and ends of fabric to make new things.  We all have ideas on using old clothes (fabric), linens, jars, etc.  into new things.
There are so many ideas available today - just go look at Pinterest for a few minutes.  OK - a few minutes is impossible!  LOL - but just go look!

If we were all more aware of using what we have in new ways, not only are we saving money - we are saving the environment.
I hope that in the new year we can do several posts about new ways to use things.  I hope we can ALL contribute ideas.

Give it a thought and get involved.
RE-CRAFT!

    1. Robin I will look up the proper zip code and let you know. I am guessing you have nothing like that in your area. It is just too neat.

  3. What a neat concept, Cheryl. I would love to donate and buy items.

We have a store called People Helping People that is similar to this, but they accept donations of all kinds and even have a free section for people to pick from.

    1. I know, we have regular thrift stores and home rehab places - but this was a first for crafts ONLY.
There are just so many ways that we can help our earth with recycle.

  4. I would love one of these stores!! Great idea and we crafters are always guilty of overdoing it. That's a perfect solution! When I go to my favorite church rummage sale, the craft table is my first stop. They bag up all the little stuff and its a wonderful treasure bag!

  6. I'd love to live nearby that store. Back in the 80's, I once thought it would be fun to open a shop called The Garage Sale. I thought I would sell things like material, furniture and stuff to fix up. I wanted a large table that folks could meet around and have a cup of coffee or tea and have sewing circles or knitting clubs. Seeing this post makes me think it might've been a good idea.

  8. Nothing like this in my area either. Maybe once I can get a good relationship with the local library, something like this would be another great way to use the library as a community resource?

    1. Absolutely! Churches, libraries, different adult groups (Moose Lodges, Vet groups etc.) would be great resources of locations. Gathering groups for a good cause, helps financially, and saves resources.
      How could that be bad!

  9. Excellent idea. Tuesday is my knitting club night. I put out a message on the fb board saying I was bringing a variety of things to give away. A couple other ladies did the same. The others want to bring things another time.

I used to take books, curriculum, and household items to my homeschool co-op for the younger moms. I usually gave away nearly everything. It's easier to give away things if you think someone needs it.

    Blessings for a happy Christmas,
