New Day, New Month, New Start

Howdy all!  It's May Day, it's May Day!  What a fun day!!  I remember it being fun when I was a kiddo.  We always made little cone shaped baskets out of colored paper in school and then picked dandelions and violets and left them on the front doors for our Mommas!  We really thought we were doing something big!
We also did a May Day flagpole dance at school - using the old 'witches' hat' playground pole!  Streamers were added and we would do a silly dance around it - just having a fun time.  Gosh, the simple fun of childhood!
I think we all look at May as the unofficial start to spring/summer - depending on where you live.  Farm markets generally start in May.  We have our first outdoor ones this weekend around here.  Outdoor flea markets start.  Yard sales really get going.  People are planting flowers and gardens.  Pretties are popping out all over.  I bet my poppies start popping open in the next week!  They have huge, big buds on them.  The peonies are covered in buds.  The roses have buds on them.
MAY, I do believe it is one of my favorite months!
Pretties in the yard.  My vinca vine is blooming with little blue/lavender flowers as well.  The world is coming back to life.
Yes indeed.  As hard as it is, stuff happens in life that isn't always what we thought.  We just have to get up and get going - and we need to believe life goes on and we can make positive changes.
It sure isn't always fun - but life does get better.  Make each day a new path to a new life.
Let May be a rebirth of sorts, for yourself as well as all of nature.  We are a part of it!!!

Make new starts this month.  If you haven't done the things, you thought you might, so far this year - start now.  Each day and month gives us a new opportunity.
Get up and get out and enjoy a little bit.  Get that sunshine and fresh air - enjoy those rainy days, enjoy all the new growth and life popping out everywhere - and know you have been given a gift on this day - ANOTHER DAY!

It is a cloudy and damp morn here and it is 68*F this morning.  Looks to be damp for the next week or so, rain off and on for a while.  I will be getting out in between raindrops and getting things ready for garden and planting.  It will make weed pulling easier!!!
It is an exciting time of the year.

Enjoy this day and here is a wish for you to have a fun, productive and happy May!!
SMILE and LAUGH a little today!

  1. It delights me that you also made May Day flower baskets! We filled ours with spirea that we had put in jars of colored water so they took on the color of the water. We left them anonymously around the neighborhood. When I’ve mentioned this to friends, they’ve looked at me like I was crazy. My mom was from IN so maybe she brought the tradition to NM with her. 1. I loved making the little baskets. Mom would always act surprised, even though she knew what was coming. It was something we all did back then - it amazes me too that people never heard of it.
Love the idea of the spirea in colored water. We had a whole hedge of those across our front yard when I was a kid.

  2. May is my birthday month so I always see it as a new chapter in my journey.
I remember May Day baskets also. Celebrating all of the little things we did back then is something I've been trying to bring back in my life now.

The sweet and simple things from days gone by, is what this world needs today! We all need to slow down a little.

  3. May is a happy month. The threat of cold, icy, snowy weather is past (at least in my neck of the woods). Everything is a lovely shade of green and the flowers are budding with some already blooming. My coral peonies are just about to open. Add in freshly pulled green onions and radishes, and it all says spring.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  4. I LOVED doing the Maypole in Kindergarten. It was a big deal, parents came, treats were made/served. So much fun!

    New starts:
-I pulled 8 packages from the freezer
-Emptied the cannister of pinto/sm red beans
*This will be a large pot of chili by 6pm and many meals to come

    -Inventory freezer
-Write list for tomorrow's plant sale needs
-Planned weekend meals to empty the fridge before compost happens 🤣
-Pull fabric for 3 quilts to donate to Sleep In Heavenly Peace

That's all I can think of at the moment!

-I walked 165 miles in April. Will May be bigger? Time will tell.

    Happy May Day everyone!

How sweet on the material quilt donation.
That is great on the miles - I will bet you surpass it!
May Day festivities were such fun. That was also back in the day when we had homemade treats for different occasions. Such fun.

  6. I don't remember ever celebrating May 1 but mom would often do something special for some occasion such as a dessert.

Of course, at school we often has occasions besides birthdays that required the moms to being treats. Is that done any more?

    1. Nice that mom made something special - it has lasted as a memory for you!
I don't think homemade treats can be done any longer. Certain things now have to be avoided. I sure miss those days back when!

  7. I remember making little paper baskets and also little paper boxes. I think I may even have the basket pattern in with my sewing/crafting stuff!

My iris are blooming and they're so pretty! I wish their season was longer. Peony buds are still tight, no color at all. I hope they don't fail... sometimes they never open and I'm sad then. This area is a bit warm for peonies to do really well. When we lived up north they were *amazing*.

    1. We sure did fun things as kiddos.
I have some iris I received from a friend, that are up, but no buds on them. Maybe it takes a couple years to take hold.
My peonies aren't ready to open yet either. They usually do really well here. One of my favorite flowers. I love the smell.

  8. I have to think that May Day was a thing where the weather was more pleasant than it can be here in my part of the world. Today, though we started with a rain, it did clear off this afternoon but was still cool. We need the rain so I am not complaining.

    1. You need rain after all that snow? Amazing
I have heard a lot of stories about it being celebrated in lots of Europe as well. Maybe came here, as our ancestors did. We sure had fun.

  9. I can't remember celebrating May Day in school, but your activities sound awesome.
Harvey has started to plant his veggie garden, and I am planning what plants I will purchase this weekend when we visit a greenhouse to pick up two bushes I ordered.

    God bless.

Wow, you are planting? I won't even think about planting garden for a couple more weeks. Too many chances for frost in my book. Have fun!

  11. I do recall celebrating May day as a kid, with the flowers in a paper and hung on the door. Today we celebrate May 1st because it's our 38th anniversary.
