Hello all. It is a much better morning today - sunshine and no rain. Looks to get pretty warm today (they say 87*F) and then it appears there will be a near perfect weekend! The water out back is 'mostly' gone - but there is still standing water in places. Yesterday at one spot it was over ankle deep! (ask me how I know - lol). Today may (probably) be the day that the AC gets a trial use!!! All that moisture out there and high temps - me thinks it will be humid! I can do heat - just don't handle humidity well.
It took me a few minutes to get started this morning, as Bitsy had to have a snuggle session. He got on the couch with me and needed a lot of hugs, kisses and loving! Sometimes he just snuggles up to my side and wants to be loved on - not often, but I love it.
There are so many ways to use things up and it isn't just about food. Yes, it seems food items is a big one - but we can use things up in other areas as well.
- Citrus peels - make sure you grate the peels and freeze for future use in recipes. They are just something that gets throw out - may as well use. You can also use to make cleaners, or to make extracts....
- Meat bits - beef, chicken, ham, or whatever you have - chop and place in a blender with a little mayo and some pickle relish or pickles and blend to make a sandwich filling. May be just enough for a lunch!
- I saw the other day a post on FB about keeping the oil from roasted tomatoes or peppers and use it to make homemade (flavored) mayo. You can also use to make salad dressing. It is a seasoned oil - so use it.
- Coffee grounds, tea bags, banana peels (chop up), eggshells, etc. are great for your garden and roses. You can also compost
- Pickle juice - never throw that away. I drink dill juice to help with restless leg. I also like to use with salads as a little dressing. It can be used as a marinade. I love dill pickle juice in tomato juice. Sweet pickle juice can be used in all types of salads to flavor.
- Leftovers - makeovers - planned overs -- use to make stir fry, fried rice, lunches, soups, burritos, pizza, calzones or hand pies, dips..........
- Ends of Romaine heads and the bottom end of celery can be rooted and planted to regrow!
- Have some older OJ (or other juice) - that kind of seems to be fermenting!! Don't throw it out. Freeze in cubes to use in recipes or to flavor drinks. Add some champagne and make a mimosa!!!!!!
- Bits left in jars of all kinds - dressings, salsa, mayo, catsup, mustard, sauces, etc. add oil, vinegar, milk, whatever matches up and shake - use every bit!
As Cookie mentioned the other day - she is using up scraps of fabric to make cute and useful Christmas gifts. Material can be made into quilts as well. Piece together a bunch of fabrics (to make a new piece of fabric) and then make pillows. I am doing that this Christmas for the littles - I will be making bears from scraps of the fabric left from their blankies I made.
Keep glass jars! They make great storage for all types of things. Great for the kitchen for spices, leftovers, seasoning, pasta, rice, etc. Can use small ones in the garage for bits and pieces. Craft room to hold utensils............
Cardboard or newspapers can be used as a weed guard in gardens and under mulch. It eventually returns to the earth. Shredded paper can be used in compost.
The list of things that we can use and upgrade and recycle is never ending really. Most everything can be re-created. As I have been saying all year - you need to get creative!!
Make some piles or have an area - for KEEP, DONATE, RECYCLE, TRASH as you clean and de-clutter. Hopefully the trash pile will be the smallest of all of them!
Just a few ideas to use it up and SAVE MONEY! Can't beat saving things from the landfill and saving a bit of cash!
Have fun with it.
Give some of your best ideas!!!!
Have a blessed day.
Citrus peels are great when I'm using the woodstove. I keep a container of water on top and add the peels to it - lovely scent! So I keep some peels in the freezer for this very purpose. :)

What a great idea! Throw in a cinnamon stick and mmmmmm! I bet it smells wonderful.
DeleteLots of good ideas! Love the hub cab flowers on the shed.
ReplyDeleteWe had some thunder and rain overnight. Not much, just enough to dampen everything. The rest of the day looks pretty good. Weeds should be easy to pull from the damp ground, but so far the ambition to do so hasn't shown up.
Sweet little Bits, wanting some loving from his mom.
Enjoy your weekend!
We had a little rain overnight as well. Not that I heard it, but it was wet when I got up. It is lovely, though getting toasty out!
DeleteI got a couple things done - but ran out of steam today!
I love his snuggles.
Thanks
I like cutting out pictures, nicely-coloured trims or prettily patterned backgrounds from greetings cards and recycling them into new cards. I just buy blank cards with matching envelopes from a craft shop. It's amazing how many cards have little bows or diamantes on that can also be reused.
ReplyDeleteI also save tissue paper wrapped around purchases to wrap presents in, along with any pretty gift bags I receive. They are too nice just to throw away after one use.
I keep the fronts of cards and use for lists or postcards. I like your idea.
DeleteYes, tissue paper is a must keep, and so are the bags. I have now gotten many relatives doing this as well - they see how much it can save. Love it!
Love this, lots of great ideas
ReplyDeleteThank you. Hope you find something you can use or share.
DeleteI have been grinding the tomato skins for a very long time. A person I watch on Youtube has ground garlic clove skins, onion skins and the woody part of asparagus to use in soups.
ReplyDeleteLeftovers are always made into a new meal or eaten for another meal around this house.
Love the idea of using plastic bottles as planters.
God bless.
I do the asparagus woody parts as well. Neat on the garlic and onion skins.
DeleteThey work out pretty neat and easy to water and move.
Things are very hot and steamy in south Central Alabama! I am very glad I had, finally, my new electric air conditioner/heating unit put in my window last week! I am regrowing green onions outside in pots right now. Cindy in the South
ReplyDeleteIt got very hot here yesterday too. I am glad you are prepared for the heat as well. It is miserable to not have AC when it gets really hot.
DeleteYou can replant so many things. Good job.
Love the wheels on the shed! I screwed license plates around the bottom of my shed and they are pretty darn cute. I save sweet or bread and butter pickle juice and add it to potato salad. It adds a great flavor and reduces the amount of mayo.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of the license plates sounds very cute! Oh I bet that makes the potato salad tasty. I love sweet juice in salads.
DeleteI have never peeled tomatoes rather, the peels go into everything I make: Ratatouille, Salsa, Stewed Tomatoes, Tomato sauce. Curious why folks peel them?
ReplyDeleteAlthough we have plenty of protein in the freezer, I scored a boneless 3# pork loin for $4.63 yesterday. We will grill it tomorrow and have many meals !!!!
Happy Friday everyone.
I peel them, as I don't like the texture they give to my sauces, especially salsa. I do not blend everything up - My salsa is in chunks. Now tomato juice or spaghetti sauce is fine to us them for me.
DeleteNow I have never peeled a peach for canning or freezing - and others do. I guess it is just a preference.
That is quite a deal! Enjoy those meals!
Tomatoes w/skins, I also chop for everything. I guess I've never noticed a difference ;-) Now I'ma have to pay attention!
DeleteSCORED another 5 1# rolls of JD sausage and this time $1.44 each! Funky weather so walking indoors at 2 big stores this morning :-)
LOL - I eat skins on fresh - but I just don't like in processed. May be just me!
DeleteWhat a deal that was. Super duper price. We are going to get some icky weather tonight. Then beautimous days!!!!!
I always soak my citrus peels in white vinegar to use as the base for cleaning solution. You can still compost them once they are drained. Lots of good tips! I want to try the one with tomato skins too.
ReplyDeleteI make cleaner too. It is good stuff.
DeleteThanks. I do the tomato one every year!
Pickle juice is great to brine chicken for homemade Chic-Fil-A. This is the second time this week I’ve read to use the leftover oil for other things. That is a great tip. I know we always saved our bacon grease to season things like beans
ReplyDeleteYou know I have never been there, but that is good to know.
DeleteI love bacon grease - makes things taste so good.
I guess we get so used to throwing out things, we don't think about the obvious of re-using some things.
I save glass jars to pour off grease. Once it’s full, it goes into the trash.
ReplyDeleteDon't throw away that 'gold' bacon grease!!!! I use tin cans for that, if I have some that need to be trashed. But you have a lid!!
DeleteI would 100% make those hub cap flowers. That is crazy fun. Love it and will remember it. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteSure. They are just the cutest. Would last forever too.
