Happy Sunday to all. I sure hope all are well and SAFE! There was a lot of horrible weather again this past week. We have some particularly nasty storms fly through on Friday evening. It came hard and fast - didn't stick around long here, but it was scary none the less. South of here was the path for a long stream of tornado damage. The 2 towns that my niece and nephews live in both got hit. They are all safe and sound thank God. My niece said it was directly across the country road from their house. Her hubs saw it and screamed take shelter. Too close for comfort in my book.
I had a lot of stuff to pick up, but that was it. I sure hope many of you that are in the areas of the storm are all safe.
It was really hot a couple of days (and humid). After the storm it has cooled dramatically. I like it. You can work without getting so hot. It will be cooler all this coming week as well. Highs in 60's and low 70's. I could handle this all summer!!!
It is hard to believe that next weekend is Memorial weekend here in the U.S. and it is one week until the 500 Mile Race.
My front walk and 'sitting' porch! My frugal week:
- Flowers all planted and some of the garden (not done yet)
- Did my final turn over of the garden and prepping it
- 'Chuck' the groundhog had decided to hang out here a LOT - didn't want that with all the tender plants going in. I poured ammonia around the deck and shed (to simulate urine of predator w/o cost). It didn't bother the cat, the squirrels, birds or opossum - but Chuck didn't like it and has left the AREA! Animal urine scents are super expensive at the store - and they say they don't like the smell of pee - so gave it a try. Must have thought some big new guy was around and left!
- Went to the bank and got my 'allowance' for the first time since October! I made it through Christmas and several months with the last!
- Picked 3 vases of flowers. I have picked and replaced as needed this week. Tons of peonies (oh that smell), roses and Clematis - I love walking through the house and getting a whiff of the peonies!
- I got the rain barrels set up finally - day late after the mid-week downpour! But they are out and collecting now
- Paid all the bills I had over the phone (reminder postage goes up again soon)
- Made more hummingbird nectar
- Mowed and trimmed earlier in week (needs again)
- Picked up a lot of debris from the yard (good bending exercise)
- Mower kept stopping for some reason (new one), so I checked it out and the plug wasn't making good contact - fixed that
- I did have to turn on AC on 2 afternoons for a few hours each - to remove humidity mainly. Won't need now for over the next week.
- I got a summons for jury duty for later in June - UGH. Hopefully they won't pick my number. At least I wouldn't have to go downtown - as they have moved the courts very close to my home, that is a plus
- All meals from home and from what I have - using leftovers when possible.
- Had a desire for something sweet on a hot day - made a root beer float. Had a can of root beer in frig since holiday - boy did it hit the spot!
- Pulling weeds and just doing odds and ends outside when weather permitted
- NO grocery shopping
Meals this past week:
Pasta/veggie salad and summer sausage with crackers
Pasta salad and smoked sausage sandwich
2 Mexican pizzas
Chicken legs, corn on cob and carrots sticks
Cream cheese and veggie roll-ups (wraps)
Tuna salad sandwich, pretzels, and pickles
'Rustic' succotash, pork loin (from freezer) and cukes/toms
So there you have it. Not real exciting, just plugging along a little at a time. I will be taking sis some rhubarb this week - as she is looking to make a strawberry/rhubarb pie for her kids for the holiday weekend. She is doing really well. I plan to finish the garden as well.
I hope to enjoy the porch too with the cooler weather!
So how was your week? Did you get any good deals? Have you got all your plantings in? Give us a shout out and let us know that you are OK from storms as well!!!!
Wishing each of you a pleasant and prosperous week ahead - stay healthy and safe.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us have no self-conceit, no provoking of one another, no envy of one another.
Galatians 5:25-26
Lord again we thank you so much for all our many blessings and our strengths. Please help us each to mind ourselves and to be kind to all others and not provoke or cause harm in any way. Let us each know that our words can be swords and can cut and hurt, may we all be kind and helpful.
AMEN
My peony blossoms got pretty beaten by the rain and wind, but there are still some buds coming, and they look fine. :) Your Peony and Clematis vase is lovely! Never thought of using clematis that way.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is a challenge to mind our words - to see to it that they do not hurt others. I remember as a child being told "if you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all" and it is a good thing to remember and take to heart. Some folks delight in pulling others down. Try not to join in their game.
I worked out in the garden a bit, still pulling up miles of ivy which have taken over trees and areas... What a mess. Really need to plant out the coleus I bought. They're going to get leggy sitting where they are now in their little 6-pak.
Have a lovely week, all!
MaryB
I am surprised that my peonies didn't get mashed down worse. I hadn't either until the other day and thought I would try the clematis.
DeleteOh I wish more people would still mind that old saying!! I see such negativity in some people and just wonder how miserable they must be.
Ivy takes over. I feel for you. It is a lot of work.
Have a lovely week.
Cheryl, your yard is so beautiful. Nice for you to enjoy as well as any passersby. This is Victoria Day w/e here in Canada. Parks are open & it's the start of camping. I'm glad not to be camping; morning temps are <10C. It's also the w/e that many people plant vegetable gardens. I finally got the lawn tractor running; nothing a new battery didn't fix so the lawn got cut for the first time. I'm learning to troubleshoot some things on this yard equipment. I can do the servicing for the most part. Thank goodness for a helpful neighbor when it's too much for me. I'll finish the trimming today. I also needed to replace the microwave. The perennial bed has been cleaned & peony cages installed. I spent a day at friends helping them prepare their 5th wheel camper for the start of the chuckwagon racing season. The little girl I once cared for on the wagon trail is now 22 yrs old. It marks time; a reminder of the years passing by. I had an unexpected visit from a cousin whom I haven't seen for ~10 yrs. In the kitchen: roast trout; brisket & baked beans; eatmore bars; chocolate chip cookies; rhubarb crisp; cold pea/rice salad (the recipe calls for shrimp; I used diced ham with good results). Here's to another good week around our homes.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I just love it out front.
DeleteHappy Victoria day! Official start of summer - that is how our Memorial Day is. Good for you on trouble shooting - it sure is nice to be able to figure it out yourself - but got to love those wonderful neighbors that help us.
Oh the chuckwagon racing sounds neat. Time sure flies by.
Nice you got to visit with your cousin. All your kitchen goodies sound wonderful.
Amen on that mam. Have a super week ahead
That Scripture gives us clear guidelines on how to live with others. I am always amazed at comments people make, nasty remarks just because they can. I don't agree with some views, but I don't tell the people who think that way that they are stupid.
ReplyDeleteYour front garden looks so beautiful! I hope your care of your home encourages others in your neighborhood.
London, Kentucky was hit very hard. Most of my family is from that area, Laurel County. Trees were in splinters.
Received a jury summons last year but I am at the age of exemption.
Good to hear that your sister is doing so well! The Farmer made a dessert of rhubarb and the strawberries are starting to ripen. He picked a nice one yesterday, so there will be more.
I cut cilantro to put in our eggs this morning and need to pull some more green onions. We use those in lots of things. Radishes taste so good, freshly pulled from the soil. Turnips are coming along and I cut some greens to put in some turnips (from the store) that I cooked. Red raspberries and blackberries are growing but it will be a while before we can pick berries. Nothing like having grow-ceries in your backyard.
Lovely day for working in the gardens. Still some weeding to do in the back and then start on the front. That is not as big an area as most of the front is in grass.
Enjoy this beautiful day!
I have a relative that is just insistent on calling everyone who doesn't see things her way - idiots. How nice?
DeleteYes London was hit very badly. I hope all your kin are good.
I called and it asked if I was 75 - said no, so still in the running. UGH.
Homegrown strawberries - yum. I love strawberry and rhubarb together.
My green onions are growing! Glad you are getting grow-ceries already!
I have been out a lot this morning and will be going back out again now that the grass is drying. It sure is pretty.
Thanks. Have a beautiful week
Good morning, Cheryl, it's so nice to read what you are up to. I love that. The frugal tips were so great on your last entry as well, those are great ideas and I plan on trying some of them. Wonderful scripture and prayer, *sigh* Yes. Truth. People don't realize that what they write may stay in someone's heart for a long time causing harm.
ReplyDeleteYou have such a homie and sweet blog, in this day and age we just don't have much of that it seems. God bless you and thank you for your prayers and care, supertight hugs to you. ~Amelia
Glad to see you stop by Amelia. I read your recent blog post and so sorry about your doggy.
DeleteThanks, I just want this to be a positive place about home and garden.
Glad you enjoyed the tips.
You take care and visit more often. Have a blessed week.
I'm about 20 minutes from Somerset, an hour from London, the two spots hardest hit. We didn't get hit hard here but I did wake the kids and make them go downstairs, we stayed in the dining room which is probably our safest option as we unfortunately don't have a basement (something I never thought about when we bought the house before having kids).
ReplyDeleteA lot of my garden was wiped out during a hailstorm last week so I need to do more work on it. The cicada brood is out in full force so absolutely everything is covered in their shells and they are everywhere.
Nothing really frugal around here. My youngest is mostly potty trained around the house (still wearing at night and going out, but underwear at home during the day) so I'm saving money on pull ups and those things are expensive. I did find him a pack of underwear on clearance. I found a book for the oldest at a free little library. We used extra wood we had to help sturdy up the wooden swingset and make a bigger sitting/play area as it's getting old and starting to rot, it should last until they outgrow it. I've been trying to stay home more to avoid spending money.
I am so glad you are OK. I just know that had to be so scary for all involved. I think I have only gone to the basement twice in all my years here - but was glad to have it.
DeleteOh no. Hail is so destructive. They talked about it here for both storms, so I didn't put everything out for that reason. I like the sound of cicadas, but they are the pits!!!
So glad you son is ALMOST there!!! That is a huge savings.
Sounds like you have been creative and that saves money. You all take care. Have a great week.
I had to turn on the Ac also, am thankful I have it. We had the Straightline winds and I have lots of sticks and limbs to pick up again but thankfully no trees down. The relative next acreage lost at least 3 huge trees, I could hear them snap and go down from my house. They didn't hit any structures but made a huge mess to clean up.
ReplyDeleteI have been under the weather this last week with heavy cold and chest congestion but it is okay now. I really didn't get as much done as I would have liked to but....there is always another day.
DD's and family here this morning helping with sticks and mowing. Family helps family around here.
I have the garden all planted and flowers are planted, there are a few more I would like to get but am being judicious with my spending.
JC
Same here on the weather. Sorry the neighbors lost trees, but sure glad they didn't hit anything.
DeleteSorry you have felt bad - hope it is all clearing up. I hate feeling bad. Nice to have family to help. I got all my mess cleaned up and all the mowing done today as well. It sure looks pretty when first done. Glad you have everything planted.
Have a great week.
Your front walkway flower beds are lovely! I'd like to sit on that porch and enjoy it too. :)
ReplyDeleteMy son had the a/c on when I returned, but I've since flipped it back to the furnace. The cool weather is here and expected to last through to Thursday. I really would like some warm weather!
As a result, my daughter won't be planting the veg and herbs until this upcoming weekend.
Your garden looks lovely Cheryl, such an inviting place to come and sit. I have rearranged my rear porch area to allow my son to move about with his walker while he recovers. A lot of pots and junk were removed and now it’s a much cleaner looking space. Change is as good as a holiday!! Take care, Louise
ReplyDeleteThank you - it is a nice place to sit. I agree, change can be as good as a holiday! Glad it all got cleared and he can easily maneuver. Have a nice week.
DeleteYour porch looks lovely. I think I would spend a lot of time there!
ReplyDeleteThank you - now you see why we congregate there. No one else has a covered porch and it is fun to look at the flowers and all the hummies!
DeleteHave a good week.
Wow what a week. I'm glad your family is well.
ReplyDeleteThanks. So very blessed in every way.
DeleteHave a wonderful week.
I’m so glad you’re safe from the storms, Cheryl. Very scary for your niece and her husband. Definitely too close for comfort. Your front walk and sitting porch look terrific and so neat and tidy. Your menu sounds delicious as does a root bear float. Yum!😋
ReplyDeleteThanks. Way too close! Just so happy everyone is OK.
DeleteThank you - I love sitting out there. The root beer float hit the spot! hadn't had one in ages.
Have a super week.
Glad your family is safe. The one we had a few years back sounded like the loudest train, ever. Both pretty cool and scary (for me).
ReplyDeleteThank you. I have been close to them, but never that close. Scary stuff.
DeleteHave a great week.
It was scary and also very cool to hear. That was the first time I heard the train.
DeleteI love your front walk. It is so pretty. I am going to try that ammonia trick as I have marmots that think my flower garden is their salad bar!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I figured for 1.89 a half gallon - it was worth the try. It sure worked on them (I guess that was it). Didn't bother other animals. Good luck.
DeleteHave a lovely week.
Cheryl, your front walk and porch are lovely. I have been unable to plant as of yet, hopefully at some point this week when it warms up and stops raining.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Thanks so much. Most of the front is perennials, just a few annuals. I sure hope you get a break in the weather so you can plant.
DeleteI am glad you didn't experience damaging weather. It all looks so horrible.
ReplyDeleteYour garden looks great. I hope I can succeed in getting some flowers going that I can cut too. I love having flowers in the house.
Thank you. I was very fortunate.
DeleteI love flowers, always have. Most of the 'cutting' flowers are out back - but I love them all.
Have a good one.
I'm so glad you didn't have any damage and are safe. These storms are really getting scary. A f5 hit just 30 minutes south of us and that's too close for my comfort. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are ok. I have been worried. This time of the year is so unsettling. I love spring, but not the storms.
DeleteHave a great week.
