Weekly Wrap Up 5/4

Good morning this first weekend of May.  I hope you are all well and safe.
It is a very chilly and WET morning here in central IN.  Rain and more rain has been the order of the last month and surely starts the month of May.  The next few days will be chilly for May.  This morning feels more like March than May.  I have been out to feed.  Licorice was in the greenhouse - he came out to his little covered area - ate and went back inside!  LOL!  Usually he goes on walk-about after breakfast, not today.
Saw my first Grosbeak of the season this week.  Goodness that is one pretty bird.
                                                                         Fun facts!
This has been a week of this and that:
  • Worked on weeding the beds some
  • Cut and chopped wild onions for freezer
  • Went to a birthday party for a 4-year-old and had dinner there (taco bar)
  • Ran to store for milk and strawberries early on and found meat clearance and ice cream (showed earlier this week) on clearance
  • Mowed and trimmed early in week - sure needs it again
  • Took apart an old bench I had and set parts out back in alley - someone took all the metal - wood is now stacked out back for someone
  • I dragged a big glider I have from back of house to the deck and behind the greenhouse.  That was a big job - but got it done
  • No heat this week and hardly any lights needed - aired house a lot
  • Made nectar and put up the hummingbird feeders
  • Paid everything I had including the property tax for the year
  • Got orders for 2 more T-shirt blankies - got the shirts for one already
  • Ran up the street to WM family market for kitty litter (my cheapest place) - found deli whole chicken on clearance (deli is right at the door).  Bought 2 and came home and broke them down and froze and put bones in freezer to make broth later
  • While out I ran to the thrift store around the block from WM and got a new Food Network magazine - 14.99 value (can you believe people pay that?) for .50 and some decorator re-usable straws for .50 (fun for company).  Got a FREE pack of fresh rolls as well.

  • Cleaned out the finch feeder and refilled and scoured the birdbath and watering holes.  The robins love the birdbath and after a couple baths it looks muddy!!  Dirty little birds
  • Doing all the normal stuff we all do
Meals this past week:
Meatless 'taco' salad (used leftover rice & beans)
Cheese & crackers and nice salad
Taco bar at party
Grilled chicken & cheese sandwich (yum) and homemade fruit salad
Philly cheesesteak style burger (no bread) and fries
Homemade breaded pork fritter and fried corn w/salsa
'Taco' chicken & veggie rice bowl
Small bowl of fruit salad - eaten over a couple days.  Used what I had on hand.

There you have it - just doing all the spring things when the raindrops aren't falling!
How was your week?  What has been going on in your household and yard?  Love hearing from you all.

Hope you all have a great week ahead.  May you all be productive and successful in all you do.  Stay safe and healthy and happy this week.
Blessings to you and yours from me (and Bitsy) at my humble little home.
******************

Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Joshua1:9

Lord, we thank You for this week and thank You for getting us through it.  Let us keep goodness and joy in our hearts and know that no matter what we face that You are there with us each and every day.  Guide us to be the best children of the Lord that we can be.  Please lay Your healing hands on all that are in need to give them healing and peace.  AMEN

  1. Another grate-ful week is in the books :-) Planning meals and eating from the freezer and pantry. I purchased fresh fruit and of course, my preferred dark chocolate for the week. I planted my lemon cucumbers. All 12 seeds germinated so I could be the "zucchini lady in the hood". LOL. I put 8 zucchini seeds in a little greenhouse container-lets see how many come up. If all 8 do, well I'll be loved or hated in the hood. I purchased my remaining garden plants from my beloved organic farmers on Friday. A variety of tomatoes and peppers and a few eggplant. Only half the plants I put in last year as we still have quite a bit in freezer and on canning shelves. I would like to have nearly empty everything by harvest time 2026. We are still eating items labeled 2022!!

Happy Sunday everyone. May you find moments of joy and gratitude this new day we've been gifted.

    1. Sounds like a great week to me. I love how fast and easy it is to get cukes and squash to germinate. Yep, if all goes well - you be that lady all lock the car doors because of!!! LOL
What a wonderful problem that is - to have too much and have to share.
I am still eating pasta sauce from about 3-4 years ago too. I make new salsa each year as I give that away. I still have older to eat here.
Continue to prep for summer. Great job.
      Have a wonderful week.

  2. What a great deal on the magazine at the thrift store! It just amazes me at some of the deals we find. Great deal on the chicken at Walmart too. That is also where I buy my cat litter as it’s the cheapest I’ve found too. Sounds like another good week for you. We’ve had a lot of rain here too, and I hope we see some relief from it soon!

    1. I am amazed at what people pay for magazines when new. Glad I only get one now and then at thrift stores. Thanks.
I am not a big WM shopper, but pet supplies are always cheaper than Kroger. It is closer to the house too.
      Rain, rain go away......
      Have a super week.

  3. I was able to get my mantis tiller started and I ran it between the rows in the garden and tilled the unplanted area. Planted 4 rows of green beans.
Have hauled out and set the pots for flower planting and I have planted the spider plants/babies around the edges in prep for buying and planting the "focal point plants". I am cutting way back on buying annuals this year. I want to use my garden budget for food plants. Plus I want to take more time in the food garden.

Hoping to get the tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, and cucumbers planted within the next 2 weeks. DD1 has the cucumbers and zucchini starts ready to go. She has grow lights and heat mats and every seed germinated. Now we just need a bit warmer days and nights.....
I was able to leave windows open for several day this last week, no heat and no AC, I love it.
Spring cleaning is done, but it doesn't take me long because I deep clean at least one room every week.

    1. Glad you got the tiller started. I haven't used mine for a couple years. That sounds like a plan on using the flower budget on food plants. Very smart in my book. More food. Maybe ask family or friends for starts of flower plants, they may be moving out.
Oh the fresh air has been heavenly. You go girl, on deep cleaning a room a week.
      Have a special week.

  4. Sounds like a good week.

I used to love to pick up those nice magazines at the thrift store for almost nothing. Sadly, they don't accept magazine donations any more.

My granddaughter's birthday is coming up soon. I need to get cracking on making her a gift. She has a lot of family who gift her lots of toys so I prefer to craft or sew a gift for her (and her brother) for gift giving occasions. Yes, it's wonderful they have so many people who love them but honestly neither of them needs one more plastic toy.

My bargains were pretty good this week. I got 2 seven pound bags of charcoal for $3 each. A bag of 5 avocados for 99 cents. A cartainer of fresh salsa for 99c. And 3 salad kit bags for 99c each.

    1. This thrift store gets brand new magazines from some retailer - most of the stores turn them back in - so it is nice to get new ones (may be past date, but new)
Nice that you make the gift. I got a lot of story books and coloring things for my niece. They read every night at bedtime and hopefully it is something she can keep. Toys, my goodness, they get so many.
Those are great bargains. You did really well. All will be very useful.
      Have a very lovely week.

  5. I don't think I've ever seen magazines at our local thrift store, but perhaps it's because I haven't looked.
We're on our second day of mid-80's weather, though it will cool down a lot tomorrow with rain in the forecast. But the long range seems to suggests no frost! I've been spending as much time as possible outdoors as possible. We even went to the beach (about a 30 minute drive away) for a couple of hours yesterday. Eli didn't mind the water, even though it was a little chilly.

    1. Mid 80's that is wonderful - what a change for you! That darn old rain cools things down. I really hope we are all past the frost stage! Goodness, what fun that must have been, going to the beach. I bet Eli loved it. Hope your warmer weather continues.
      Have a great week.

  6. Saturday was lovely here. We got about 3/4 inch rain which we need. Did not disturb me at all since I was away at an all day singing event.

Our library has a table of free magazines. Sometimes there are really good ones. Also my local laundromat has a basket of magazines for customers to read (or take). I have a couple of gift subscriptions and I take the older issues there.

Did not feel well enough today to go to the singing even in another cit - just too much after yesterday. So I slept late and then went out and weeded - so much easier in soft damp earth!

Have a nice week, all! :)

    1. Glad you got needed rain. That is neat that places offer free magazines and let people drop off their discards. Recycling at its finest.
Sorry yesterday wore you out so. I think the weather can do that sometimes. I bet you had an enjoyable day yesterday.
Yes, weeding after rain, sure makes things easier!
      Have a special week.

  7. Just returned from a w/e at my son's & his family, ~4hrs away. Glad to be home but lovely drive with the leaves appearing & many farmers in the fields spring seeding. There are combines in the field across the road picking up canola that didn't get harvested before the snow set in last fall. It's windy & dry; rain is needed badly. There have been wildfires with these perfect conditions for same. Yard cleanup has started & if things go as planned, there will be some veg planting this week. First the garden implements need servicing & the garden needs tilling. I had the neighbor little one day this past week for fun & games. Finished the book "The Book of Longings" by Sue Monk Kidd. In the kitchen: ham & scalloped potatoes; roast carrots w/ maple syrup & ginger glaze; gnocchi w/ peas & bacon; carrot/pineapple muffins. I'm heating some turkey soup from the freezer for my supper. Have a good week, Cheryl.

    1. So happy you got to visit with your son and his family. I wish we could send you rain. There won't be any combines in fields for a while yet here.
Glad you are getting yard work done. Good for you on planting already.
Little ones are so sweet. Your meals all sound very good.
      Have a great week.

  8. You were a busy bee! That salad looks good too. We are in for rain this week too, so I think I will start working on imposing order in my attic. I suspect it's going to be a wet spring.

    1. Thanks - it was tasty. I am so happy I have never put a thing in my attic. They kind of scare me! LOL! Good luck organizing.
It sure has been wet so far. I am looking for a break to mow again.
      Have a great week.

  9. Hi Cheryl! Lots of good meals on your list this week :) And I am continually surprised by the price of magazines! Since working at the library, I've been able to read some for free. We subscribe to several magazines and we also have a donation room, where patrons have donated some older issues. It's nice to read and then return, without spending a dime. Have a wonderful week!

    1. Magazines are outrageous in cost! I look sometimes while standing in line at the grocery - goodness the price.
That is neat to read at the library. I always forget about the library having that service. Nice people donate - great recycling.
      Have a super week.

  10. Hi Cheryl. It sounds like you had a nice week. I love this time of year when we don't use heat or AC. I slept good all weekend.
I used to have a subscription to Food Network magazine and enjoyed it but with the internet, I don't buy magazines any more. I had no idea they have gotten so expensive. That's crazy!!
    Have a great week.

Magazines are crazy expensive - even the cheapest ones from back in the day are expensive now.

  11. The Scripture in Joshua pretty much covers it all! We are going through a rough patch, but we keep strong and of good courage. His will be done.

You were busy last week and got some good buys. The coming week looks to be pretty nice though some rain.

The vinyl shed at the house south of us collapsed on his nice John Deere riding mower. I hope it plans to cover it in some way.

  13. After some lovely days we have cloudy skies and lots of wind. In fact at times it will gust to 85 km an hour. I hear it whistling around the house and the wind chimes are going like crazy.

    God bless.
