Howdy all! Hope this finds you cool on this Tuesday morning. It is going to be day 4 of 90*F+ here at my home. It is more the humidity to me than the heat. It is muggy! It is 80* at 7:50AM as I write this. Hoping for a few more clouds today!
Yesterday seemed like the longest day. I feel like we are well past Tuesday already! I had to go for jury duty! I was hoping against it, but yep they called my number. I went, actually sat for the preliminary part of a criminal case - rape of an unconscious woman!!!! They told us names of all witnesses, including a medical doctor and officers, and then they questioned each one if us.
Let us just say that the defense lawyers did NOT like my answers as we were all questioned. (I have very strong opinions about rape - if proven). The defendant tried staring down each woman juror as they spoke, dang if looks could kill!!!!!!
I was excused! As several others and I left - it seemed we all had the same opinions (men included). It took over a half of a day to get to that point.
It was an interesting experience, and I felt like I was in a TV show!!
Glad that is done. I am good for at least 2 years now!
SMILE
It is now that time, when the sun is shining bright, to keep blinds (or curtains) closed on the sides of the home where the sun is shining brightly. I open blinds when I first get up (I need the daylight inside). Then as the sun is at various sides of home, I close the blinds.
I have always closed the mini blinds the same way - for some reason I did something different one day and BOOM what a difference.
My bedroom window - the normal way I have always closed the blinds. Slats facing downward.Same window within 45 seconds of taking the first pic. Slats facing UPWARD! The room is darker, the theme of the look changed, and no light coming through the slats. My room is staying much cooler. This is facing east!So I have started closing the ones in the living room the same way in the afternoon (west side).
It really does keep the room darker (no hints of sun coming through). It has helped keep the house cooler as well. I think we all need every tip possible to stay cool and maybe save a little on those cooling bills.
This was a big DUH for me!!!!! LOL
For sure this old dog learned a new trick.
A Tip or 2
Maybe you are making some summer salad - be it potato, tuna, egg, ham, etc. Suddenly you realize you are out of relish. No worries - no need to make a store run. Do you have pickles? Any type will do (especially sweet). Chop them finely, maybe add just a tad of juice (if desired) and you have relish! Use what you have.
Going to the store for just a couple things - do NOT get a cart (buggy). For many, getting a grocery cart - is a challenge to fill it up! LOL. If the store has those little baskets, maybe get one of those or just carry what you went in for. It really does save money. You can't be tempted to buy lots of other stuff, as you can only carry so much. I often get the smaller carts (most stores here have 2 sizes) or just the basket. I only have room for so much. So less spending.
ALSO - I know many use cards for buying everything - but if you go grocery shopping try taking cash. You have X amount of cash to spend - PERIOD! You can't just buy and buy, and you are limited to amount of cash in your pocket.
So, if you have a spending problem at the grocery (or any store) and you are trying to cut back and save some - try these tricks. It will help you save a little in funds!
Just a reminder - do what is necessary to stay cool and hydrated. Take care of all the animals as well. Check on neighbors.

Absolutely *yes* on the blinds. That's how I do them in summer.
ReplyDeleteI almost always use a basket if I'm getting just a few things at the grocery. Carrying a basket of stuff is a bit more exercise too. Surprising how heavy a cantaloupe is! :)
Yes, in the 90s today here, and sunny. Glad I work in an airconditioned space. I've already closed up the house for the day. Yesterday the house stayed in the upper 70s while it was 89F outside. That's ok in my book.
Yes, stay hydrated, take it easy in the heat.

I guess I am late to the game and just figured this out recently!!!
DeleteBaskets are good exercise - you are right. Weights make a difference.
Hot, hot. Glad you have AC at work. Smart to have the house closed up - that isn't a bad temp!
Be safe.
Hi Chery. Summer has arrived here too. So glad you found a way to keep the sun out more. We have black out curtains or fabric window shades on all of our windows. Keeping the sun out really makes a difference.
ReplyDeleteGlad you got out of jury duty. I don't want to jinx myself, but I have never been called once in my life. TBG had to do grand jury duty once a month for a year but he enjoyed it. And, now he never has to do it again.
Stay cool and have a great week.
Summer is in full force, for sure. Smart to have the window coverings you do. Keeping out the sun makes a huge difference.
DeleteThis is the second time I have gotten called in. It was interesting, but I just don't won't to make judgement on someone that could affect the rest of their life! I guess we have a rule - no more than every 24 months here.
You stay cool as well.
It certainly is hawt today! We went out early to water and plant some things we got a Lowe's yesterday afternoon. The flowers came from the clearance shelves. Tomatoes are ripening, green beans are blooming, the red raspberries and blackberries should be ready soon, and there are more yellow zucchini to harvest. It is such a joy to look at our backyard, and see all the bounty and compare it to what the yard looked like when we moved in. Grass is overrated!
ReplyDeleteI used to clean for a lady that turned her blinds in that direction. She said it was also a safety factor, no one could peek in. The Farmer doesn't believe me...
That was a grisly experience at the courtroom. Hope he gets the book thrown at him.
I prefer a baby cart when we go to the store. Alas, Costco doesn't have them. ha!
Stay cool! I think we are finished for the day doing anything outdoors.
It is hawt indeed! Nice that things are producing so well. Our 'grow'ceries are sure neat. I have things coming on - so soon! Been out and done what I plan to outside. Indoors for now!
DeleteThat is another good point on the blinds. It does prevent anyone from peeking in - I have tried it just to see. Sorry to your hubs!!! LOL
I can't imagine it ended up well for him - but you never know. Guess it all depends on evidence and witnesses. The medical doctor being there said a lot in my opinion.
Those little carts are about right.
Think cool thoughts!
Hi Cheryl, you don't have to do jury duty ever again after 70. Add another good thing about getting older!!!
ReplyDeleteAccording to them, it is 75 in our state - they make sure they ask and that you know it!
DeleteI was going to say the same thing, no jury duty after 70. Yea! I have served 3 times and did not like it at all. Now my Mother loved it, she was very social and made a lifelong friend. Our families would do get togethers and such. It's going to be warm here too but not the high humidity. Good tip on the blinds. Stay cool!
ReplyDeleteIN says 75 is the age - I guess we will see. They made a big deal about the age on the call-in register and the questionnaire. Glen served on a murder trial and loved doing it. It just isn't my thing. I don't want that responsibility!
DeleteNice that she made a lifelong friend - pretty cool really.
Glad you don't have the humidity. Today is hot, but it doesn't feel quite as humid, that is good.
Take care and stay cool!
Isn't it amazing that we find out new things even at our age?
ReplyDeleteIt sure is. Daddy always said to be sure and learn something new every day! It may be something simple - but I learned something.
DeleteGood for you, teaching yourself something new!!!! I agree with your Daddy, it's good to learn or re-learn something new. It seems quite often lately I'm like "Oh yeah, I knew that, but must have forgotten it"
ReplyDeleteTake care, Louise
I think we should all be open to new things - I love learning something new. I have probably forgotten more than I know! It is all in there - just need to know how to pull it out!
