Don't Love Cooking? It's OK! Do What You Want

Hello and happy Tuesday to all that have found their way here.  Hope you are all well.  It was 54* when I got up this morning!  So above average.  Another day to be in the mid 70's.  This is so great.  It is just about perfect in my view.  All above normal for sure.  Sunrise was lovely and there was also that big old full moon still hanging out!
It is great to be given nice days and evenings for being outside, doing yard work and just sitting.  The cats LOVE it; they stay out and play and play.

Ok, let's get to it.  I know for ages, I have said homemade is the best.  I like homemade, and I try to cook often.  I like cooking.  I still think that using basic ingredients is probably healthier - but not everyone LIKES to cook.  I understand!  I get it.
Do what works for you!!!!!!!
As I get older, I am starting to realize that we don't like to 'cook' the same.  I realize that cooking means different things to different people.  I also realize that many just don't like to cook.  No problem.  Do you!  It is just fine.

If you want to buy premade meals and can afford to - do it.  It is your kitchen, you can do what you like.
Maybe some might do better with some premade items that just make cooking a little easier.
Lately I have had questions about easy meals, that don't require standing at the stove a lot, maybe using a crockpot.  There are lots of things you can do.
There are many items that can be purchased that makes it easier - sort of semi-homemade.
I ran across a You Tube station the other day call Stacey's Simple Meals - and there was an episode called Crockpot Cooking for One - you might want to look it up.  Great ideas.

Think about having a meal of simple things (my favorite): I am a big one pot fan.
Baked potatoes - all loaded up with whatever you have.  Chef salads.  Pancakes, waffles or breakfast foods.  Sausage gravy can be served over toast.  Omelets, eggs with whatever you have left added.
Scrambled eggs cooked with diced potatoes.  YUM
Pasta - with sauce (can be jarred) or in a salad with cut up veggies or meat.  Wraps or rollups - with fresh items or leftovers add some cheese and sauce and yum.  Tuna salad, egg salad.   Eggs over toast.  Add meat or veggies to mac and cheese.  Tacos, grilled burritos.
Tortillas can be purchased for next to nothing - fill with leftover meat, cheese, rice, beans, cheese - whatever - roll and slightly grill on a non-stick pan or gridle.  Easy and filling.

Mixes can be used.  It makes soup making so easy.  They can be found in lots of different stores, for various pricing.  I get several every year in my Christmas basket from nephew, and I use them.  Use as they are or add things yourself to jazz them up.  The rice mixes can be added to broth and made into soup as well.  I have done that several times.  These are super easy to make and very tasty.  Just get a little creative with a mix and you can have a fun and tasty, easy meal!  Usually all you need is water - broth works too.

If you like using the crockpot - there are lots of fun things to make.  Yummy too.
You may want a smaller pot is cooking for one.
One thing I like is pork loin - it is meaty (little fat), and I can fix in numerous ways.  I often find these little ones marked down and I get several when I see them.  They are about 1 1/2 lbs. and make a few meals.  Can cook in the crockpot, add some veggies and you have a meal(s).  Cook with BBQ and you can make pulled pork.  Cook alone with seasoning and you can do anything you want with it.  If I don't like the flavor they have available, I just wash it off and add my own seasoning.

Use some frozen meatballs and add some sauce for any pasta dinner.  Meatballs and BBQ or seasoning for sub sandwiches with some fresh veggies an/or cheese.
Cook up some ground beef with onion (if you like), then add a drained can of sliced or diced potatoes and cook it up together.
Leftover mashed potatoes - add a little flour and an egg and make potato cakes.
You can add fresh veggies to a crockpot (with a bit of liquid) and have a nice fresh dish.  A little cooked sausage/meatballs and sauce and cheese w/acorn squash and yum!

There is just no end to quick, easy and delish dishes you can do at home.  You can have one pot meals and do fine.  They do NOT have to be handmade!!!!!!  Hey, I have had my share of frozen lasagna, deli chicken, pot pies, and store-bought pizza (I love Aldi & WM fresh).
There is NO shame in doing what you want to do and what you can afford to do.  NONE!

When I suddenly became a one-person household, when I did eat, it was cold cut sandwiches and maybe salad (prepackaged).  That was basically it.  It took a long while to get back into cooking.  I do enjoy cooking, and when I do have company, I want to be able to still cook good things.  So, I kind of keep in practice.  Plus, I really love food!

No one person has all the answers.  No two people have to do things the same.  We are each very different and unique and wonderful individuals, and we all have our own ways.  I am so glad we are all different - as life would be pretty boring if we weren't.

So happy eating.  Eat what you want, what you like and what you can afford.  Do you, it is your kitchen.
Any easy ideas you have to offer for others?  Have you found any premade items you love?

Have a fantastic day.

  1. Your idea of buying the little pork roasts made me hit my head… why didn’t I think of that???
    Wonderful idea.

    1. They are just perfect for one or two people. They come in may flavor seasonings or plain. You can make anything with them and they don't cost a fortune!

  2. When I'm on my own I prefer to cook simply too, though i often make enough for a few meals. Packaging the leftovers for the freezer makes meal time even easier.

    1. Leftovers are great. Cook once eat twice or more. I do the same - I don't mind leftovers at all.

  3. Cook once, eat three times. My oldest daughter Alana and her friend Annie used to get together before school began in the fall, and cook freezer meals, for those days when classes were rough and no energy was left for cooking . I precook and season meats and freeze them, and that is a time saver when it comes to getting a meal on the table pronto. We keep Costco meatballs in the freezer. They are good in a lot of ways, even chopped up with a sauce for sandwiches. Of course, during the gardening season, it is easier to pick grow-ceries for a quick meal.

It is going to be a beautiful day! I checked the 10 day forecast and it looks like temps in the 60's and possibility of rain. It is fall, after all!

    1. Yep. Sounds like your daughter and her friend were smart cookies! There are always days we all get tired and just do not want to cook. Something hovering in the freezer is wonderful. I buy frozen meatballs often.
It sure is lovely out. I keep hearing a very mild winter for our area. I will not object.

  4. I don't if I mentioned it here that a few months ago I set up worksheets in a binder system for my daughter to plan meals. One page was the menu for the week, one page was the grocery list and one page was the prep list. (I also included sample menues & recipes). Since she works from home she can glance at the prep list and know she can prep the green peppers or onions or whatever when she has 5 minutes between calls and check that off. She doesn't waste time trying to figure out what she should prep. She can just glance at the list.So when she's finished work she feels like she can dive right into making dinner. Her husband can look in the binder and start dinner if she's still working. This is a couple that LOVED to go out to eat or order in all.the.time. She told me today they just don't do that now. They don't want to.

So she was on the phone today with a coworker in South America. They were talking about trying to eat healthy & well while working a busy job. She showed him her binder. He was impressed and wanted to know where she got it. "My mom." Lol. My daughter emailed him the blank pages because he wants to do it, too.

    1. What a wonderful gift and wonderful idea! That is just superb. The fact that they don't go out to eat now, and don't want to - says volumes. Maybe you should go in the market of making them!!!
Love that she is sharing the idea to be helpful to others as well. Good going mom!

  5. I agree with using some pre-made ingredients. I like to use Ramen packages, not as soup but as a base for a bowl full of supper. Add some leftover veggies or meat and maybe a fried egg with that chicken seasoning and you've got a tasty meal. Canned spaghetti sauce is good on many different things, not just spaghetti. Lunch meat is not the healthiest thing but it is a protein and it makes a good sandwich. Also I like canned chicken, tuna, ham.
To be honest I enjoy cooking now more than I did with a family - I don't get those "don't like that" (from little kids). With the internet there is so much out there to look at, ideas galore! And if I'm tired, there's always toast with peanut butter!

    1. The noodles do seem to be just the right amount! Yep, they can make some great meals - cheap and using up what you already have.
I have to admit, my guilty pleasure in the summer is a tomato and bologna sandwich. I keep all the canned meats as well.
I never thought of it that way, you only have to please you! Indeed, on those tired days, maybe some toast and jelly for me or cheese and crackers - whatever sounds easiest at the moment!

    1. I love rice so I cook a big pot, sort it into single serving baggies and freeze it. Saves lots of time, as I prefer short-grain brown rice which takes a good while to cook. It's not hard to cook, just kinda slow. :)

  7. Some days are dogs, some days are diamonds here at our house in regard to meals, but it all evens out by the weeks end.
I also use ramen a lot, it's a very versatile item, and is a good pantry staple. My favourite lately are "loaded sandwiches" which are a sourdough base and top with filling cooked in between. The combination of fillings are endless, and when sliced, toasted and served with soup are a great lunch for our workers.
Thanks for these ideas Cheryl, its great to get suggestions and make them suit your own situation. Take care, Louise.

    1. Great first sentence!! I like that - yep, it all works out.
The noodles work in so many things. That sandwich sounds divine! That is a good idea for using Italian loaves - cut in half - remove a little bread - then stuff and put back together. heat in the oven and done! Now I am hungry!
      Glad to help!

  8. I have been known to use Lipton's Side Kicks when I am unable to think of something for supper and mix in diced meat of any kind. It usually makes enough for both Harvey and I if I add in a cooked veggie or salad.

    God bless.

  9. I get so tired of thinking about what to cook, cooking and all the mess to clean up but the older I get the less satisfying meals out are. The restaurant meals usually cost a lot and most of the time I walk away disappointed and feeling like I wasted money. I guess my biggest savings are eating lots of leftovers. I save little bits of veggies, meats and broth and then get them out of the freezer and make soup along with more add ins that I need. Even though it’s been several years since my boys lived at home I still struggle to fix the right amount of food for just dh and myself. I’m always afraid it won’t be enough and it usually ends up being too much so I’m always a work in progress it seems. You ladies have wonderful ideas about saving on meals and I enjoy reading what you write. We have been blessed with wonderful weather here in Va going on week two and I love it and I’m thankful for it.

    1. The reason I do these kind of blogs is because we all get bored at some time! It is always nice to have new ideas. Eating out is nice for the company - but I haven't been impressed with food in ages and ages. Too much money, and just not satisfying at all.
When my hubs was here, there was never too much - he ate it for breakfast or lunches, which was cool. I do love a soup with all the odds and ends we keep.
Thanks for jumping in and share any ideas you have along the way. Enjoy the weather.
