Frugal Happenings 3/10

Good morning everyone.
Did you change those clocks?  UGH!!!!!!!  I have not used an alarm clock in over 30 years.  I always wake up about one half to one hour before dawn.  Now I did the same today - and I feel like I am running behind.  It will take me a while to get my mind/body adjusted to this - it always does.  Isn't that crazy?  You wouldn't think one hour would make such a difference.
Don't forget to change those seldom used clocks as well - like in your car!

We had a storm blow through yesterday.  We ended up with almost 2" of rain in a 24 hour period and lots of wind AGAIN.  This past Monday and Tuesday we set records for cold temps on those dates that had lasted 146 years!!!!!!  It was cold.
We went from a yard that was rock solid hard to mushy and gooshy.

This coming week is supposed to be a little better, but I am ready for 60's and 70's.
We have had a major weather event every weekend this year, except 2!  I am kind over it - I wish it would just mellow out a bit.  It doesn't need to be so dramatic!!!!

It was an extremely quiet week (AGAIN)
My frugal week:
  • Got my leggings out for about 3 days again to wear under jeans.  They sure do help keep me warm.
  • We had a home doctor visit this week.  All is good with G.
  • I made a "new" belt for me this week.  G doesn't wear them anymore - so I got one of his narrow (in width) leather belts and cut it down and punched new holes.  Now I have a sturdy leather belt for jeans (instead of my decorative one) and it was FREE
  • We got our taxes all printed out and ready to go in this week.  Yes we are old fashioned and mail them - we do not submit digitally.
  • I did go to Kroger and got 48 cans of tuna for the deep pantry at 2/$1 (my stock-up price) and I actually broke down and bought fried chicken at the deli - marked down 8 pcs. (whole chicken) for 2.99!!  I see it marked down a lot - but never that cheap.  Regular price was 7.99.
  • I went back to Aldi and bought 3 more bags of oranges for 1.99 each.  I have thoroughly been enjoying them.  I get intense cravings for oranges this time of the year.  I guess my body is telling me something!
  • Still working on deep cleaning.  I don't know why we call it "spring" or "fall" cleaning - as it is always needing to be done.  Get through the entire house deep cleaning and it's time to start over!!!!  Right?
  • I finally decided on what the baby blankie will be that I need to make for an upcoming gr.gr. niece (gr. nieces first).  It will be a combo of pretty material and hankies!  When I get it made I will show you all.
  • Doing all the normal things each and every day - how exciting! NOT!!
  • I did a lot of reading, watched some You Tube and research
**************************************
Meals this past week:
Baked fish, asparagus and rice casserole
Burrito supreme & salad
Cabbage, smoked sausage, potato skillet
Fried chicken (store bought) and red beans and rice
Chicken and veggie stir fry (flavored like General Tso) over rice
Homemade gumbo - used up all leftovers in this (2X)

All leftovers remade into new dishes or used for breakfast
*******************************

So how was your week?  Any good deals?  Are you planning your gardens yet?  I haven't started - but I generally do the same things each year.
Look forward to hearing what you have been up to.

Prayers for health, healing and safety for all.  May your week be full of frugal living and fun surprises.  Live your days with purpose!!!!!!
Blessings from our humble home to yours.

  1. I feel the exact same way about cleaning. You just get all done with deep cleaning and have to do it again.
So funny Cheryl I'm making fried chicken. You can't make it though for the price you paid! What a deal. Have a great day!

    1. Our job never ends!!!! Guess that is job security!! LOL
I know - I don't ever buy at the deli - but that price was crazy. It was decent chicken - not super moist - but worth 2.99.
      Have a good week.

  2. That chicken was definitely worth $2.99. Good deal! Good job on using one of G's belts to make a new to you one. I love repurposing things like that. I hope you have a great week.

    1. I thought it was a good price for chicken as well.
I love to use things for new uses too.
      Have a great week off!!!!!

    1. I am retired too - but get up to feed the kitties at a certain time every day. It always messes with me, and it takes forever for me to feel back to normal.

      You are not alone!

  4. My body does not like the clocks changing but I love that it stays light out later. It is warming up here. Still some snow on the ground. I usually plant my peas on St Patrick's Day. We will see what happens. I got cabbage, sausage, whole chickens and vitamins at great prices this week.

    1. I like the extra hours of daylight as well - but I haven't done well so far this week. Just very off keel.
My Daddy used to plant peas on St. Patties Day as well.
Good job on the deals - you always do so great.
      Have a good one!

  5. We had a couple of nice weather days and I opened the windows this afternoon. I hear we're expecting lots of rain until Thursday but nothing yet. I heard my first lawnmower this afternoon. I noticed this morning that bulbs are pushing through and the peony is uncurling.

Hubby took the day off so we could go get our taxes done. Took advantage of the time to go to Aldi, as well. Eggs were 58 cents so we got 5 dozen. Got a bunch of stuff we desperately needed and I'm hoping it'll take us cheaply through March.

I wish they'd leave the time alone. It takes me an average of 2 wks to lose the morning fog. I read a funny about it. It said that if they want people to enjoy the change, they should spring forward on a Friday at 4pm and fall back on a Monday morning at 6am!!

Meals last week are hazy. We had a lot going on and ate strangely!
    Chicken caesar salad
    Chili
    Chicken stuffing casserole
    Hamburgers
    Cheerios lol
    Tomato soup lol
    Scrambled eggs and toast

    Told you it was strange!!

    1. WOW that is a great price on eggs. Haven't seen them that cheap yet here.
Glad you got a chance to get things done. Hope your month stays on the frugal track.

I truly like the sound of that theory!!!!! I don't believe it would bother anyone.

Hey, you ate - that is what is important. Sometimes we all eat a bit weird and that's ok. Not a thing wrong with it.

Enjoy the little respite from chilly temps and dry!

  6. Deep cleaning here too. I've packed and moved 40 small moving boxes into a storage unit I rented last month. Getting ready to put the house up for sale, so eating down the freezer. Your blog is such an inspiration to good housekeeping.

  7. Hi Cheryl!
Those were some big savings! Around here, we are starting to clean and take everything we don´t use or need from our house. Sometimes, we store so many things we don't even remember we had... Uau!
Hope you and your family, have a great week and God bless!

    1. Oh, I know. We have so many things stored away - and they need to go. If I haven't seen them in ages - why do I have them?
It seems to be a never ending job. Good luck - it is quite a task.

Thank you and you have a blessed week as well.

    1. LOL - yeah me too. I keep deleting those - it really aggravates me they do that. I haven't figured out how to block them yet.

  9. I would have been thrilled to find fried chicken at that price. :) I can't wait to see the baby blanket. I have a fondness for handkerchief blankets.

I wish they would leave the time alone. It does nobody any good to keep fooling with it. Even my friends who are farmer's hate it. That is why it was created in the first place to help farmer's. You know farmer's have electricity now, lol.

Spring cleaning. I finished all my coloring tools in my art studio. I take a week to refill and test everything. It is a huge job but so worth it. Decluttered and organized the bathroom. Have the kitchen to do and my tool area in my art studio and I am done with Spring cleaning! Yeah! Will finish those this week. Oh, I have to do my bookshelf too.

My computer went to the white screen of death this weekend. It is too costly to repair so it has been parted out. DH & I repair computers. Oh yeah (sarcastic) another broken thing in my home. We have had something break in our home every month for the last six months. It is a major costly break. When it rains it pours, lol. Luckily I had a backup computer. I had it set up to mirror my main one. I am so glad I do this all the time. It saves so much money and worry.

Lots of reading here too. Creating pretty new paper art pieces & just doing every day frugal things. I do take joy in it.

Yes, I am planning my garden. I am already getting seeds. Super excited. I start in a couple of weeks with planting.

    1. Sorry about the computer. Glad you had a back-up and it is fantastic that you both can work on them.
WOW - something every month? Thankfully that is the reason we are all frugal - it helps in those precarious times when we have to spend a chunk of change.

I have concluded that 'spring' cleaning is a fallacy. Once done - it's time to start over again on deep clean - so it really never ends!!!

Good for you on planning the garden. I got onion sets today - YAY for me. I have lots of seeds - but I buy some plants too. My garden isn't huge - so the expense is not that great.

      Have fun creating!!!!!!
