Weekly Wrap Up 6/25

Happy Sunday to all!  Good golly Molly, this month is almost over!!!!!  Crazy stuff.
It is raining this morning!!!!!!  We have had a bit of thunder, but the bad stuff has missed my area so far.  The rain sure is needed!!!  More storms to come later today as well.

The garden is growing.  I have little cucumbers about an inch long, and I saw lots of blooms and a few tiny tomatoes yesterday.  I have finally started getting some little zucchini - up till the last few days it was just blooms (like they always do for a while).  Peppers are growing and have lots of blooms and tiny peppers.  Pretty amazing to me that all this has happened in just a few short weeks!!!!

Yesterday and today are hot days!  Around 90*F.  Humidity has been up as well.  Tomorrow goes back to cooler temps and lower humidity.
I have the living room window next to me open just about 2" and I can smell the rain.  I love that fresh smell!

It has been another fairly quiet week for me - not a lot going on.
  • Cut lots of weeds and wild trees and vines starting - when it was cooler
  • Picked up a ton of sticks and limbs after a couple very windy days
  • Tons of laundry
  • Paid all things I had
  • Cleaning and gathering things for donation
  • NO mowing this week - it was just too dry in my book.  There are a few weeds popping up (nothing deters them).  I will mow this week and make it all look pretty!
  • I did run out to Kroger for a couple things.  Strawberries were 2 lb. boxes for 2.49, milk 1.29 half, pork loins were 1.99 lb.  I got one which I will probably cut into 3 roasts.  I got kitty treats and 2X points for gas.
  • I used the air fryer and some stale buns for a  cheap meal
  • Using what I have and cooking from home
  • Just doing all the normal stuff
Meals this week:
Sausage, egg and cheese sandwich
Homemade Rice A Roni, beef tips, cukes & onions
Used leftover rice and beef w/other stuff - for burritos
Open face homemade sloppy Joe and wilted lettuce (yum)
Grilled ham & cheese sandwich, hard boiled eggs and fresh veggies
Charcuterie of sorts - piecing day!
'Bun' pizza & peach/strawberry smoothie

Oh this rain is just lovely!!!!!  It is a good rain here.  So needed.
I will be inside most of today and just piddling around.  Between the rain and the heat and humidity I don't plan on doing much outdoors, except feeding my baby!
Yesterday was the first mosquitos I had seen.  UGH!  Nasty buggers!

How was your week?  Is everyone's gardens and pots doing well?  Getting any produce yet?  Gotten any deals?
I sure hope and pray that you are all well and doing good.  I have been saying a lot of prayers lately for so many here.  Take care of yourselves and please check in.
Blessings to you and yours from my humble little home!!!!!

Dear Lord, please hear our prayers for peace in this world.  Peace amongst individuals, and peace amongst countries and nations.  We pray for kindness and compassion to replace evil and wickedness.  May all see the error of their ways.  Your will be done.  In Jesus name, AMEN

  1. Good morning Cheryl. I wish you could send some of your rain here…but this is the desert after all. Tomorrow marks six months since DH passed, and I am still not cooking, but expect to start soon. I am terribly tired of eating out or snacking, and none of that is as healthy or affordable as meals at home. Otherwise, making very slow but steady progress on home improvement plans. And doing okay in the grief area, bouts of it come and go, but overall better. Amazing how it is almost July! All the best to you, Hilogene in Az.

    1. Hello Hilogene. This is the first rain in over a week and it didn't last long. Sun is out now - but more is coming today.
Wow, 6 months. Hugs!!!!! It is always tough - it does get a bit easier - you are doing really well. You have made a lot of big changes and things will start to smooth out some. All that eating out and snacking isn't cheap! Much cheaper and healthier at home - you will get there. Just do simple things and remember it doesn't have to be a 3 course meal. Cook what you like!!!!!
      Glad you are doing better.
      Have a great week.

  2. Sounds like a lovely week, Cheryl. I’m glad you got some rain even though it brings the humidity with it. We had some rain this week too and like you, we needed it. Your meals sound delicious as usual. I hope you have another good week. 😊

  3. As promised here is the recipe for Tomato and Chilli Jam. It comes from a book that I highly recommend, The Preserving Book by Lynda Brown. It is English, but has both metric and imperial measurements and covers everything from storage, drying, freezing, curing to recipes for all types of jams, relishes, jellies, pickles, it has the lot.
This recipe gives you one large jar of jam.
1lb 2oz tomatoes, skins removed and roughly chopped.
    1tbs chilli flakes
    1tbs dried mixed herbs
    Juice of 1 lemon
    Pinch of salt
    9oz white sugar.

Place all ingredients except the sugar in a heavy based pan and bring to the boil and then simmer until the tomato begins to break down and soften.
Add the sugar and stir gently until all has dissolved.
Turn up the heat and bring to a rolling boil, cook for 10-15 minutes or until it begins to thicken and turns glossy. Remove from heat when testing for setting point to avoid burning. Then bottle in your preferred way.
I quadrupled the recipe ( just to use up a glut of tomatoes ) and ended up with six and a half small jars. I found it good to use up those odd misshapen fruit that you always seem to end up with at the end of the season. It went well with all types of cold meat on sandwiches and was also great on a charcuterie board.
Please keep an eye out for the book, I can’t recommend it highly enough. Have a great week everyone. Louise

  5. You've had a busy enough week, it sounds, Cheryl. Just the stuff of life and that's good. Also good that you have rain! Although it's technically monsoon season in AZ, the rains haven't started yet. We're pretty parched in the White Mountain region. But the high temps that precede the rains will arrive in the next week; 90s every day. Might not sound *hot* for AZ, but at over 6000 ft. elevation, it's a once per year event, lasting a few weeks, then storms move in.

Ordinary week here, and quiet, which I like. A few days this week I had 3-4 hour naps during the day! Otherwise busy in the house (me) and yard (Hubs). Meals were also ordinary: Spaghetti and meatballs (Sunday), chicken w/mashed potatoes & gravy and coleslaw (Monday), ground beef "steaks" with leftover sides from night before (Tuesday), skillet ground beef, tortellini and peas (Wednesday + Thursday), link sausage with rice and Italian beans (Friday), and last night son brought Burger King ($12.99 family meal w/coupon) that we shared with BIL. No grocery shopping this week, but we're low on produce and milk so we'll go this week.

We did use Dollar General $5 off $25 coupons yesterday for bags of general purpose potting soil. It's like getting one bag free. We still have plenty of lunchmeat + homemade lunchmeat in the fridge, and with heat coming, I did get a big bag of potato chips at Dollar General for sandwich dinners the coming week. Their brand is $2.49 per bag. I have pureed strawberry "pops" in the freezer now, too. Planning ahead. Basically, one batch of crock pot jam that didn't set well could be salvaged. A hint for anyone who needs it. I do low/no sugar jams, so it isn't a problem.

Can't wait to hear about who is able to harvest from their garden!

  8. Excellent Scripture! I see lots of kindness and compassion in the comments. This is a good place!

We didn't get much rain but it all helps. I was hoping for an all day steady rain.

I fell last Thursday while trying to collect some chives for our lunch. Hit my left side of the corner of a planter box and skinned up my left elbow pretty good. Don't think anything is fractured, just pulled muscles and soft tissue damage. Trying to take it easy. So much to do but can't think about all that.

Enjoy your day! Looks like tomorrow will be really nice.

Tight squeeze, awkward position, and of course crunched my ribson one side against the seat of the toilet, ouch. Nothing busted, but sore. Not sure how I could have done better, and I did rescue the earring! :)

  9. Hi Cheryl. I had the dressing off my knee this week. On the way back from the health centre we popped in to see father in law, ever the joker, he said it was a good job I had not had throat surgery :-)
Our eldest granddaughter and her partner have been to Turkey on a four night holiday, they fly back around midnight local time. We have had their little dog to stay, he is sweet but our Lhasa Also gets a bit jealous of we make too much fuss of him and jumps up to be loved too. Good job they get on well.
Our allotment has produced several carrier bags full of peas, reminds me of a childhood spent shelling peas in the sun. We have had various lettuce and a couple more green zucchini. I have not felt much like cooking or eating but did make zucchini fritters this lunchtime to go with a shop bought meat pie. Odd combination but we are trying to finish up food in the fridge. They were delicious.
Our daughter has been away a couple of nights helping a friend and work colleague and her husband move into a brand new park home, it's had several teething problems with water leaks in the main bathroom and several small things not working. She brought me back a bottle of plum gin liquor that Jess was not going to drink.
It's definitely cooler and windy this afternoon. There is a major music festival around 10 miles away from our home, Guns and Roses were one of the headliner acts last night, I think Elton John is on tonight. Hopefully it will stay dry for the campers packing up tonight/tomorrow morning. I expect all local roads will be pretty crazy tomorrow, good job we don't have to drive anywhere. We have been once, David Bowie was then one of the major acts. It's deffo not my thing any more camping Wednesday-Sunday/Monday with thousands of other people.
Hope you have a good week, like you mentioned eeeek it's almost July.

I remember enjoying going to concerts. Those are some big names!!! I always enjoyed concerts (early on) and enjoyed camping - but not with thousands of other crazies!!!!!
      Have a blessed week.

  10. We had inches and inches of rain over the last week and most days were quite cool and only 67 on the first day of Summer! We had somewhere we had to be most days so it was a make like ducks week! Our container veggie garden has taken off with all the rain. I have one green pepper ready to harvest and high hopes for all the rest! My master gardener sister had a big empty pot a few months ago and came across a mushy slice of tomato in her fridge so she took it out and put in the middle of that pot. Now she has a huge plant loaded with 25 huge tomatoes!

  11. I really enjoy your blog and all the nice comments too. Everyone is so nice here. No peppers or cukes forming yet, but there are small tomatoes. The garlic scapes were picked a few days ago so the garlic will be ready to harvest in a month. Can anyone recommend a good everbearing strawberry for zone 7b? Our June-bearers have finished now and our baby granddaughter enjoyed them so much that I'd like to extend the harvest for her next year. The "Radio" calendulas are gorgeous this year. They are fast becoming my favorite flower. So cheerful and so easy. I love my red Queen Sophia marigolds, too. I keep saving seed from the reddest flowers because they are so lovely. And borage! I guess I have around 1000 favorite flowers! Whatever is blooming is my favorite. Ha. Nearly all my geranium seeds came up Cheryl, which means there will be 20 little geraniums to overwinter. I will try to train them into tree shapes. It's supposed to keep them healthier. Wish me luck!. Currently, I am trying to dry parsley and basil once each week. I pick the leaves off the stem, airdry it for a day and then dehydrate it. It only takes 25 minutes in the dehydrator that way. In our humid climate, most things get moldy if I just hang them up to dry. I do okay with the garlic though. Hope you and all your readers have a good week. Dee/NY

  14. After a week at home, Husband is doing fairly well. He's had a couple of incidents of weakness when he stood too long. His speech and mental skills are worse in the evening when he is tired, of course. We see the primary care doctor tomorrow and will get orders for neuro-physical therapy and speech therapy. I've given up finding in-home services, so we'll be doing outpatient visits at a hospital clinic about 15 minutes from here. Husband does not travel in a car very well, but we think he can handle the short trip.

I have been having my good and bad days with the anxiety. I bought an essential oil diffuser necklace for my peppermint oil. Overall, I'm doing a little better. I walk around the block a couple of times for exercise and fresh air. As a bonus, I met some more neighbors, two brothers, one of whom had a stroke last year. The caretaking brother also walks around the block.

My garden is a lush jungle after all of the rain we had recently! The spinach bolted, but I'm picking peas and thinning beets for salads. Tomatoes are setting on, bell peppers have buds, and the zucchini are finally getting female blossoms. The front flower bed is looking a little better. Marigolds I grew from seed are starting to bloom. I bought a red miniature rose bush for ½ price ($6.50) at the grocery store and planted it in an empty spot.

At the same grocery store, I got nine 7-9 oz. packages of deli sliced ham and roast beef that were on their use by date for $1.99 each and froze them. I eat a deli meat wrap every day for lunch. The whole wheat wraps I use were $1.50/pkg off, too. Husband's favorite ice cream was half price.

This week will be busy with Husband's dr. appt. on Monday and my previously-scheduled dental checkup on Tuesday. Chicken vegetable soup is in the crockpot for suppers, and leftovers will be frozen for future busy days.

  15. Sounds like all is well at your place, Cheryl. Great buys from Kroger. Your menu sounded yummy too.
We had to go to the city for a few days for appointments and work on our city house. It was hot!
I did some research of prices online and then shopped the deals. Was pleased with the results. Sugar came on sale at $1.88 per 2 kg just in time for I will need it for jam and wine making.
My hubby has a little patch of wild strawberries near the woodshed and it is starting to produce. The first berries are always the biggest. We eat them every day and I made jam today, as well.
Our windows are closed and we wear masks outdoors to keep from breathing smoke particles from the massive wildfires burning north and east of us. We had a good soaking rain yesterday so it will help somewhat but we are extreme fire risk.
At last there is too much food coming in the garden...radishes, chard, arugula, asparagus, onions. Looks like a bountiful summer ahead.
We went fishing yesterday and caught 5 nice fish which yielded 9 pounds of fillets. Yippee!
Speaking of insects...we have been donating blood for weeks. Both mosquitos and blackflies. Should be done soon though.
Hope everyone enjoys celebrating respective Canada Day and Fourth of July. No fireworks, please!

  16. We finally got some much needed rain. We had about an inch overnight. We also had some this morning, but I'm not sure what the final total is. It was a busy week here. My husband and I helped with a neighborhood church event. Hot dogs, chips, cakes, carrots, and watermelon were served, and it was open to anyone in the neighborhood who wanted to come. Our church is is in Minneapolis, and despite the fact that it was very hot - 91 degrees and humid - we had a good turnout. I helped serve food, but after about and hour or so, I had to get inside to some air conditioning. I don't get along well with heat and humidity! Thursday was a dermatology appointment and Friday was a funeral. I was so glad when the weekend got here. This week I have basil to make into pesto, parsley to dehydrate, and some lemon balm that I will pick from my daughter's garden. Neither of us knew that lemon balm was invasive, like mint. I'm sure she will need to take some of it out or it will take over! I also have lemons and limes to juice, and I think I'll dehydrate the peels to make powder. There were a couple of leeks in our CSA box, so I need to freeze those. Every little bit counts! I hope you all have a very blessed week! Wanita

  17. Hi Cheryl,
Thank you for the scripture and prayer today.
I hope this post goes through as the last two disappeared. We're on our third day of rain and tomorrow is supposed to bring us severe thunderstorms. I sure hope not.
The garden is starting to produce more and we harvested another zucchini, some more radishes, arugula, lettuce, and more basil. I made more pesto for the freezer for the winter months. Baked two loaves of bread for hubby and made croutons from the heels of the bread for his salads. 3 quarts of bone broth got made in the Instant pot making it that way meets the requirements of low histamine, while the slow cooker does not. I also made myself some gluten free low histamine cookies from tigernut flour and some more no roll crackers, which are in the freezer as well. Before the rains came we fertilized the gardens. I made more folios and cards for Christmas gifts. There was no grocery shopping last week, but we will pick up 30 pounds of blueberries that we ordered from Kiwanis. I do see blueberry jam, cobblers and muffins in my future.
    Meals this week were:
Barbecue shredded beef with homemade sauce, sweet potatoe fries and homemade coleslaw.
Grilled salmon with sauteed onions and fennel, rice.
Cream of zucchini soup and large salad.
Homemade crustless chicken pot pie served over baked potato.
    Vegetable lo mein
Turkey wraps, fries and a salad.
Somewhere in here we had blueberry/blackberry cobbler for dessert. Cookie

Like you, the week was filled with the usual household tasks & yardwork. I hilled the tomatoes & put the cages out yesterday. I reseeded the lettuce. Marigolds planted around the kale has kept it safe from deer who love the day lily blooms. Green onions are ready to thin & I will dice them up for the freezer soon. I had a massage, babysat the little up the road one day, had 3 playdates with friends, & knocked off a list of errands one day in town. 2. I looked it up, PP, and it's probably redberry mites. "The redberry mite is microscopic, requiring at least a 20× hand lens to detect. It has two pairs of legs and a thin, translucent appearance. Redberry mite feeding prevents berries from ripening uniformly, causing from one to many druplets to remain as a bright red cluster on the otherwise black and fully ripe fruit. Affected druplets never do ripen, causing the entire fruit to be inedible and unmarketable."

You might try a simple oil/soap spray, cross your fingers and hope for the best this season. They overwinter in leaf litter or on the ground and can come back next year. The article I read says: "Infestations of redberry mite are often controlled with lime sulfur or natural acaricidal oils." A lime treatment in fall might kill them.

      Hope that helps! --Elise

  20. We had some repairs to do on my husband's old truck. He bought the parts and our son-in-law helped him with the repairs, for which we are very grateful! My husband always apologizes for the cost because he know how frugal I am, but I always tell him "It's much cheaper than a car (or in this case a truck) payment." We've had car payments too often in the past, but no more!
I'm on vacation this week and I have something I want to do every day. Monday and Tuesday will be home repairs and painting walls, Wednesday my husband and I are going away for the day to a lake north of us, Thursday we are meeting one of our daughters and two granddaughters at the park, and Friday I am going thrift store shopping. I just feel so blessed to be able have a whole week to enjoy my home and my family. Have a great week!

  21. When your Monday begins with dog puke and poop (in the house) before 6 a.m., it's best to "recalculate". Neither is sick, just got wound up chasing each other. And so, this last week of June looks to be about trouble shooting.

Yesterday morning I made big batches of Italian pasta and spinach-rice salads to feed 4 (last night) and last several days in the fridge. They both came out a little dry and bland. This morning I corrected that. When you've worked in the kitchen for as many years (decades) as I have, you don't just automatically toss out food that didn't come out quite the way you'd hoped: you rework it if at all possible. I imagine everyone here does the same. It's just practical.

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
    1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Have a safe and happy week! --Elise
