What's Up?

Today is going to be a little of this and a little of day.   Nothing special or super important to report at the moment.  We have a chance of storms coming in this morning.  They already in the west and southern part of the state.  We have a chance of rain for each of the next 5 days!  It is going to be hot and humid though.
Right at the moment, it is lovely and a nice breeze coming through.  It doesn't look nearly as bad, smoke wise today.  The winds that are blowing through are clearing it out - thank goodness.
I am going to show a picture of downtown yesterday - this is not my picture - but was taken just a ways up the road from me.  To get to this spot would take me about 15 minutes.

This was yesterday!!!!!  Yep, it was bad here.

What has everyone got planned for the holiday weekend here in the states?  Do you have big plans?  It looks to be a long weekend for many people - maybe a 4 day weekend instead of 3.
I have no plans whatsoever.  I am hoping for a nice quiet weekend, however I know that won't be!!!!  The crazies around here have been doing huge fireworks already.  I do have to say it hasn't been as bad as years past though.
I imagine a nice weekend, porch sitting and doing a little yard work when it isn't too hot!

You finding any good deals in your grocery ads this week?
Our ads really stink.  I was so surprised to see NO hamburger or hotdogs advertised!  Really - it is a cookout weekend.  They had ribs in the ad, but they weren't any kind of deal in my opinion.  Now they have buns in sale - but no hamburger or hotdogs!  LOL
NO watermelon in the ads either!!!!!!!!  That is a staple around here on the 4th.
I sincerely doubt that I will go to the store this week.

Yesterday one of the neighbors came over taking up a collection for the family across the street.  It may not end up being a lot - but it is something.  She has a lot of unexpected expenses right now.  Today is the funeral.  He was just 34 years old!  Just so sad.

For the most part - I have such a good bunch of neighbors.  We all got together the other evening to celebrate the 80th birthday of the man who has so many properties around here.  He was amazed.  It was a great gathering and nice time with the neighbors.  They are such all very spiritual people, and we all seem to have grown closer in the past few weeks.  Kind of nice!

It is getting cloudy at the moment, but it looks like maybe this round will miss us here (according to radar).  Maybe around lunchtime, and then again this evening.  Hoping no severe stuff.

I will be post Sunday as usual.  In case you are busy all weekend, stay safe and have a nice time!
Have a fantastic and blessed day!!!!!!

  1. That is sweet of your neighbors to take up a collection for the family who lost their husband and father.

I hadn't seen any of the pictures downtown but the people at the eyeglass place were talking about it. We are staying in except for necessary outdoor chores. I'm sitting in the waiting room at the eye specialist, waiting for the Farmer to get finished.

Lots of folks around here are burning up their money this weekend. I just don't get it.

    1. Yes, I imagine they will need any help.
It sure was smokey yesterday. Today seems a bit better - thought about mowing some - but they say not to. It will still be there another day!!!

  2. Good morning, We are going to go camping over the 4th for a couple of days. Back on the 6th. I don't want to leave the kitties very long. Our neighbor will come to take care of them.
Wow, on the smoke. I remember when it was like that here a couple of years ago.
    Prayers for your neighbors today.

It was terrible yesterday. It could be worse I guess.

  3. Thankfully, the smoke has cleared out a bit here also. Yesterday you could taste it, it was so bad. I'm sure the birthday celebration was very appreciated. It's nice that your neighborhood is coming together. I haven't been to a store this week and probably won't. I plan on going to the farmers market tomorrow and then enjoy a relaxing 4 day weekend with the big guy at home. We're under a heat advisory, air quality alert and severe storm watch today. Enjoy your weekend Cheryl.

Farm market sounds nice - I may do that Saturday
Have a wonderful 4 day weekend and enjoy your time together. Stay safe and cool!

  4. Debby in Kansas USAJune 29, 2023 at 9:56 AM

I remember when I was in Jr. High (mid to late 70s), there used to be constant smog alerts in L.A. from the air quality. It was orange and it literally stank. By my 20s, it had improved a lot. Still, after moving to Kansas, the L.A. air can make me nauseated. It's a chemical smell. Sorta like chlorine. The first time we went back, it hit me as we were descending the mountains outside the city. I grabbed a bag because I thought I was going to be sick.

Yeah, the yahoos are blowing off fireworks here. I heard them at 7am. I can proudly say that I don't contribute a penny to it lol. However, we'll be cleaning the trash up for the next two weeks. We have a couple of errands to do, but will mostly be home. Fine with me. We're lucky that our dog isn't bothered inside the house. Mind you, he won't go outside to pee during that time! We usually take him out just before dark and then one of us will take him out at about midnight.

I still have 3 things to do on my June list. To finish, really. I'm hoping to finish 2 tonight and 1 tomorrow. I'll let you know on Sunday. I already started making my July list.

Take care. Btw, I only watch a little bit of local news in the morning. Are they any closer to getting the fires under control? Were they lightning strikes? My friend in the Montana mountains nearly lost their 170 yr. Old home a couple of years ago. Her attitude surprised me. "Nature must be spring cleaning.". Gah, I'd be freaking out.

    1. This just smelled of smoke and yes, you could taste it too.
It is amazing here, we have dry weather, air quality problems, and no one has mentioned a ban on fireworks!!!!! That is just plain STUPID to me.
Good for you hope you get your list done.
I heard the weatherman say - the fires would be going for a while - they have had so little rain in that area. Not sure what caused them.

    2. Debby, we lived in the Inland Empire (near Temecula) from 200-2002. Air quality was as you mentioned... orange with a funky odor. It actually left orange scum on the cars pretty regularly. And HOT... triple digit temps 6 months out of the year. I carried a washcloth in my purse to keep from burning my hands opening the car door. All those years ago fires were a regular, summer thing, too, making air quality worse.

I just read the fire in Quebec was caused by lightening. The other is believed to be related to human activity.

  5. The picture of Indy looks like the ones of Pittsburgh yesterday. It is a little better today, but I'm staying in as much as possible. It has infiltrated the house, too. We have a chance of storms from Friday afternoon through the weekend. I hope we get some rain to clear the smoke out.
Went to the local grocery in the interest of saving time this morning. Paid twice as much and bought only what I needed for the next week. I'll get to Aldi next week.
Husband has the appt. with the PCP this afternoon. I hope we can get the orders for PT and speech therapy. I'm not looking forward to the trip. It is 30 minutes from here, and he is not a good car traveler. My anxiety (and stomach) are acting up again.
No holiday plans at all. I pray that the crazies in your neighborhood show some restraint with the fireworks and that your anxiety isn't too bad, Cheryl. I'm sure there will be some around here, too.
Here's wishing everyone a safe and happy weekend!

    2. Staying in is smart. I thought this morning about mowing my front yard - but figured it will wait. It has cleared quite a lot today.
Glad you got the store done. I am fine here, so staying in.
Hope the apptmt. goes well. I am sorry you have to go so far for therapy. That stinks. I sure wish you could find an in-home PT.
      Take care of yourself too.
Oh, I will be fine - it is just so irritating. I will get over it.
      Take good care.

  6. Just saw a from-space picture in a weather report showing the smoke from the Canadian fires has reached Europe. It reminds me of the terrible fires during our last years in CA, when it was reported that so much CO2 had been released into the atmosphere from those fires it (essentially) negated a decade of reduced carbon emissions. My long winded way of saying the pic of Indianapolis reminds me of every West Coast city for many summers.

No big plans for the holiday weekend. Every community around here holds a parade. We may get to one of those. The rodeos also start up this weekend. Not sure if there'll be any fireworks since we have high fire danger warnings; I think fireworks aren't allowed under restrictions. Our grocery sales fliers also don't have big sales on ground beef or hot dogs this week, but sales on buns. LOL! Good think I have plenty in the freezer. Hubs did get a 19 cents per lb. seedless watermelon. We'll probably hang out at home and avoid crowds.

How very nice of the neighborhood to take up a collection. Just 34 years old. Wow. My sons are his age. Still praying for the family. You have amazing neighbors, Cheryl.

    1. Oops... Hubs has informed me this weekend will involve finishing moving and raking out the gravel, plus laying out a few bales of hay we bought in low lying areas. I need to get the re-purposed nursery pots planted, too; apple seeds have been in the freezer for awhile + un-chilled herb seeds. Has anyone ever planted cherry pits? If so, do they need freezer chill first? --Elise

    2. I can not even imagine living with that in the atmosphere every day all the time. Good golly that would be awful.
I would think we should have bans on fireworks here - it is dry, no action days sue to horrible air quality - and they keep talking firework displays. Amazes me.
Sounds like you will have a busy weekend. Try to enjoy some of it.
Never have planted cherry pits. Have fun.

    3. It was one of *many* reasons for leaving the state in retirement. And I know I'm late planting, but everything I'm planting in pots is perennial and our growing season lasts until mid to late October. Yes, we'll have fun, grilling burgers and hot dogs, maybe chicken one night, and just hanging out with son and BIL. If there are any fireworks nearby, I'll be curious to see how Blue does... she's a skittish dog; she still doesn't let BIL pet her after all these months. --Elise

  7. It's been very smoky and hazy here for the last several days. I still have my Covid cough and the air quality has only exacerbated the irritation. Other than walking the pup, I've stayed inside all day. Our local fireworks are going to be held on the night of the 4th, even though it's a work day for those younger than me. I'm hosting a late-afternoon gathering of friends and family and we'll all have appetizers, dinner, dessert, and a few beverages together, along with lots of conversation. After, those who want to stay for fireworks can join me across the street, pond-side on our lawn chairs, as we watch the display shot off over the lake just beyone the pond [from west going east, my townhome, one-way each way boulevard with trees in the median, small pond, commuter train tracks, big lake, main Village park where the primary celebration will be held, if you want live music, lots of vendors, and crowds]. The fireworks start at 9:30 PM, so daughter and son-in-law have said they won't stay for those. They live about an hour from me, and staying for the fireworks would mean they wouldn't get home until nearly midnight -- and she has to be in-office on Weds. for a presentation. Still, it will be a fun get-together.

I'm sure your newly-widowed neighbor will be appreciative of any/everything that you and your neighbors can do to help her with this adustment. Even something as simple as weeding her flower garden or reading a story to her little ones will be appreciated, above and beyond the monetary gift. Too young ... and brings it all back. Blessings, my friend!

    1. It sounds like you have a fun weekend or day planned. Lost of good companionship!!!!! Gosh, it is barely dark here at 9:30 - they will probably start closer to 10PM. Of course the idgits in the neighborhood go all day and night over the few days leading to the holiday!
Stay in as much as possible to get over that cough.
Have fun with family and friends.
Yes, she will appreciate all gestures I am sure. It is just so sad.

  8. Wow that's very smoky and hazy and not good to be on the worst air quality table. I know there are lots of animals and folks with PTSD that hate fireworks but I love organised displays, not idiots who let them off at random times of the evenings/nights. I hope you and all your readers State side have a great holiday weekend.
We are having our youngest son, his wife and our youngest granddaughter to visit on Saturday. Sunday my hubbie has a brain scan (to do with pressure on his eyes) which he is dreading as he does not like enclosed spaces. Our daughter is taking him as I can't drive for another two weeks.
Enjoy your weekend Cheryl, what ever you decide to do.

I don't mind organized firework displays, as they aren't basically right on your doorstep! It is all the crazies who set them off.
Sounds like you will have a nice visit. Goodness, he is getting a scan on Sunday? Wow, nothing like that would ever be done on a weekend here. That is amazing. Hope it all turns out well.
Thank you and enjoy your family time!

  9. My daughter and I drove through Michigan on Monday and were shocked at how thick the smoke was on the road. Fortunately, we could see several car lengths ahead but we wondered what we were going to do if it got worse. I think yesterday was the worse for us. It *looks* better today but the quality is still bad. I don't have any health issues but decided to be nice to my lungs and stay in. Nothing I need to do that can't wait. My daughter's work cancelled their outdoor work party.

  10. This weekend is huge for us. We will be clearing out a property that we just purchased. I always get emotional at this part of our work. Sad at how people live, happy to look at their memories, sad that they have been left for strangers to clean up.
Gee, I had no idea the smoke was that bad for you Cheryl ( I should watch more news, but it’s all sooo bad it saddens me)
I’m hoping no fireworks for our dogs sakes too, Elise. As long as people don’t let them off in the middle of our street like last year, I will consider that a win.
Thank you for that verse, so very true.
Frances, I continue to pray for you and hope that your anxiety remains manageable.

    2. It is very sad, in this case it was an elderly man whose only relation is a nephew who lives on the other side of the country. I was told he did t even return for the funeral. I have agreed to keep any family memorabilia I find and ship to him. I think he only agreed to that under duress from the sale agent.

Our Canada Day is Saturday. As always I will stay home and relax at home. I'm not a fan of crowds, though when the kids were young I would take them to the fireworks. Now I just listen to them from my bed.

  12. Praying today especially for that little family, so very heartbreaking. What kind people to take up a collection, when Al (my stepdaddy) died, their sweet little neighborhood took up a small collection, it was the sweetest thing. I remember sitting in the little living room of a poor family as they presented us an envelope. Al was a sculptor and made many cemetery monuments, he and mother lived in an old old neighborhood in back of the shop there. I said all of that because I understand the sacrifice that people made to do that and I know that precious mommy was so blessed. I hope they have good family.

That birthday party sounds very sweet and thoughtful, I know your neighborhood blessed that man's socks off. : ) We have some rentals, it's our retirement, and I really appreciate the fact ya'll appreciate that man for doing a good job with everything and keeping things nice.

The meme on kindness is precious. I know you will be that little girl to that family who lost their precious dad. I'm just still shaking my head on that...How horrible. Prayers will continue to go up for them.

Blessings for a peaceful evening, ~Amelia

It was a long for them The kids didn't go until it was about time for the service to start and I noticed they had t-shirts on with daddy's face on it!
The evening ended peaceful after storms.

  15. When I want to complain of the smoke/air quality I think of those directly affected with evacuation & property loss. I'm breathing fresh, cool air after a shower in the night, listening to cows & calves mooing back & forth to each other. Tomorrow morning there will be a parade & festivities in the local town to celebrate Canada Day. I will encourage my 90 yr old mom to watch the parade with cousins & neighbors. She did enjoy the parade last yr when she was encouraged by her grandson & great grandchildren. She's become more frail in the past year.
