Learning and Teaching

Hello all.  Happy Thursday.  Hope you are all well and safe.  Really hoping none of you are experiencing any effects from the hurricane - I know it is causing a lot of flooding at the coast from the waves and water surges.
It is cool this morning, but still muggy.  We must have had some rain overnight - as the drive is wet this morning.  Sigh!  I am guessing I will not get to mow today - the front just stays wet all day after rain or heavy dew.  I guess there is always tomorrow!
Isn't that a pretty picture?  I love the colors.

You know we all think as we get older, maybe we aren't as 'useful' as we used to be.  That is so not true.  We all have something to offer and share - I think that is a huge part of our job on earth.
We all have things we can learn as well.
I recently came across this little article and just loved it.  We are valuable and essential in this world, no matter our age.  I know many think that as they age that no one cares any more, or that they have nothing to offer.  Goodness, nothing could be further from the truth.  Whether it is 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, years - you have that many decades of knowledge that can be passed on.  It may be hard lessons learned, it may be joyful experiences, it may be matters of finance, it may be matters of the heart, it may just be plain old common sense - but it is there and can help others.

I recently had a conversation with my nephew, and he was telling me a story about a conversation he had with his daughter.  I sat here smiling the whole time.  At the end, he said, I am sure glad you emphasized those things to me over the years!!! (His mom, is my sis that passed when he was younger).  I told him, I heard those stories from daddy so many times.  Mom was always an influence in my life, but daddy gave the wisdom and advice over the years.  Not sure if it was lessons he learned the hard way, or he had heard it too.  I really can't imagine grandma talking about some things.  He learned a lot of hard lessons over the years.
Anyway, this just shows how the words of one - passes down the lines over the years to many.  Someday, I imagine my great niece will be telling these things to her children!!
Isn't that amazing?  It is nice to actually see it happen over generations, nice to know while I am here.

That is kind of what this whole blog is about.  Passing on things I have learned over the years, many from my family and friends, other things from experience.  My dream as a young woman was to be a teacher, so I feel I get to do that on a small level here.
You come on and post your comments and your tips and ideas and journeys as well.  We are teaching and we are learning - no matter our ages!!!!
We are sharing and teaching even though we have never met - I think that is so neat.

Each an everyone one of us will leave a piece of ourselves in someone else.  I feel so proud, every time one of my nieces or nephews tell me that they appreciate the things we have told them over the years and that they use them in their lives.  Sometimes, they just call and ask - what would you advise.

Knowledge is a great, great gift to pass on.  I think it is more important than money or things.  It is the gift that keeps on giving!

So never feel you are insignificant as you age.  You are vital and so important.  Whether to a stranger, family, friend, neighbor, whoever - you have something to pass on.  Even if just a kind word, you have shown someone how to care.
I love that we all live and learn and teach!
Thank you all so much for contributing in your way to this blog and thank you all for being 'teachers'.

Be YOU and be POSITIVE, that is perfect.
Have a wonderful day and weekend.

  1. I love this post. It is so true that no matter how old you are you still have so much to look forward to and so many things to learn and do.
Julia Child (one of my favorite people) wrote her first cookbook in her 50's.
It's really cooled off here and is supposed to be actually chilly this weekend. I am very happy about that. Enjoy the rest of the week.

    1. Many authors have done first publications later in life, artists have done masterpieces later - we have no limits (except maybe physically). I have seen articles about 80 year olds doing first marathons! We can do it if we want to.
      Always be open to learn.
Yes, it will be cooling off for next week here - looking forward to it.

  2. So true. Who can forget fitness guru Jack Lalanne famously doing 95 pushups at age 95? Age is just a number, I saw on the history Channel that people in ancient times lived over 200 years old. The theory is something about degradation of food, air, water, soil plus bad habits are shortening life spans.

    1. I remember him and watching him on TV. Oh, I definitely think all the chemicals that go into our bodies, make a huge difference. Huge.
I want to make it to a 100 if I am still healthy! Not sure why, but I have always said that. I do things a little slower now, but I am still doing them!

  3. I ran an errand today and on my way home thought that I needed to check your blog, it is Thursday! You and the readers who comment are the voice of sanity and sensibility in our world. Each generation has so much to offer the next one, if only the young are willing to learn. Each generation also has different world events and challenges so much of what we can pass on are the values of living a good life. Thank you for your blog.

    1. Glad you stopped in! I hope to keep this a piece of sanity and sensibility. I hate controversy and anger. There more than enough of that to go around in this world - so this is our SAFE place. I am glad folks notice that.
Yes indeed, there is so much to share and learn from everyone. Thanks for your compliments.

  4. Excellent post! We can still be relevant and vital. Many cultures revere their elders, have deep respect for their wisdom and knowledge. The Farmer was a union sheet metal worker for many years, and he observed the older fellows who retired, sat down and did nothing. Death was soon on their heels. As Poirot would say, "Use the little grey cells." And "use it or lose it".

    Enjoy your weekend!

    1. We should be one of those cultures!!!!! The elders have so much to offer - we all should listen and learn.
That happens often - stop working, and set down and boom - it is over. Activity is just smart on all levels.
Every day I think about daddy and the question "what did you learn today?"

  5. Such a great blog post, Cheryl. The Bible tells us that the older women are supposed to train the younger women. I love how you’ve mentored your nieces and nephews over the years. How wonderful that they let you know that too. 💕

    1. Thanks Belinda. Yes we should all be passing on the knowledge that we have gained. Someday hopefully they will all pass on the things too.
It makes me so proud to know the kids listened and did learn. I wish their mom had been here as they became adults, but that wasn't to be. I felt responsible. I feel like I succeeded, as they are now telling these things to their kids. That makes me very proud.

  6. Yes, there is so much to learn! I am now (in my 80s) learning what it means to maintain a house. The repairs are rather major and I had no clue anything was going wrong, everything seemed ok to me. Sigh. As my son said, "that's above my skillset"! Now I need to be somehow made more aware of what I need to look out for.

    1. It is a big job taking care of a home alone! Much to learn. I had a good mate who taught me many things - as he knew he would be disabled - but I thought he would be here longer for those tough questions. Sigh. So yes mam, it is quite a learning process and if you can't do it, finding the right person to do it.

  7. I find it very strange that things I have spoken about to nieces or nephews are sometimes forgotten and yet if the same hint shows up on a Facebook post or social media they are all over it. Many are going back to the old ways of cooking, gardening, or cleaning. They used to find it strange that I did certain things on certain days. Now they do the same. Those were things I learned from my mother.
We also learn from each other each and every day. So of course you can say you are a teacher.

    God bless.

    1. I think some people just need to hear something from a stranger to make it a fact for them! I find that crazy - but it happens. I would rather listen to family first - but not everyone is like that. I am just glad I have had an impact on them.
It is funny how we do so much the way our moms did. Neat.
      I call us all teachers!

  9. I’m not sure if I can post the link here. But my friend went to an exhibit at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. It was called “Paws on Parchment.” One of her favorite pieces was Mary and Child with a Cat, Italy, 1490. I thought you’d like it. Here is a link that may work to tell the story and show the painting. (Maybe this qualifies as learning for the day.) https://art.thewalters.org/object/37.455/

  10. Really good post, Cheryl. Those things are so true. I’m going to share this with my older sister (who is 84). I’m sure it will encourage her. She has been such a blessing to me and my husband, as we are getting over being Covid. Taking the time to ask how we are, to pray for us – things that make us feel loved and cared for. She has the time now.
Anyway, thank you for the post, as always. Stay well.

Thank you, nice to have you here.

  12. EVERYONE is useful. Regardless of age. Even a three year old has good ideas and thoughts. Same goes for a 93 year old. IMO.
