Hello all. Hope you are all well. Baby it is cold outside! We got a blast of winter weather for a couple days. We had snow start Sunday late afternoon and through yesterday until about 11 AM here. It covered everything. At one point yesterday, I wasn't sure what was falling faster - the huge snowflakes or the leaves! It was something to see. No leaves left on the tulip tree now, and the maple lost a lot. The ground was both yellow and white! Some has melted, depending on where the sun was hitting. I got the back walk cleared off as it melted - those leaves get slick.
Goodness, the sunrise was beautiful this morning. The bright pink only lasted a bit, but it sure was pretty. We get a little warmer each day, until we hit 70 again on Saturday! Crazy stuff.
While the snow was blowing around on Sunday, I stayed in and did some TV watching. I got into watching a show called Struggle Meals on the Taste network (235 on Direct TV). It is also on You Tube.
The guy doing the cooking is Frankie Celenza. The whole series is about using what you have, spending little and having fun and yummy food on the frugal!
The guy has some really neat tips - things I never thought of in all my years, and some really good sounding food ideas. I got a lot of ideas. It is worth trying to find and watching. His holiday ideas were really fun too! CHECK IT OUT!
I am sure you have all heard about the DEALS for Thanksgiving dinners going on. They are everywhere - which is good. Most all large markets and their affiliates are having deals. Many are lasting until Christmas.
You have seen them - feed a family of 10 for $40. There are also stores having feed 4 for $20. Some in between. They are all making it hard to NOT being able to afford a great dinner.
ALDI has a $40 deal - there are about 21 items on their list, and you get multiples of several - making it about 26 items.WALMART - has a $40 deal and it has 20 items
KROGER has a $40 deal, and it has 16 items.
Both AMAZON and TARGET are advertising $20 deals to feed 4.
Seriously I like Aldi's the best - all include turkey as well as canned, boxed and fresh items.
It isn't a packaged deal - so you can pick and choose for variety.
Looking at the pre-ads for this week (starting Wed.) Some Kroger will have turkey for .49/lb. and Meijer will have turkey for .39/lb. Not sure what restrictions there are - but dang - those are the best prices I have seen in a few years!
Just think you can get all that food, make a lovely dinner, maybe have visitors bring a side as well - and you will be eating good for a while.
You cannot buy lunchmeat or deli meat (or any meat) for the price of turkeys!!!! It is healthy and you can use it in so many ways.
I know not all live in bigger towns and not all have affiliates of big grocers close by - but for the deals, it sure would be worth a little drive for me, if I needed any of it.
I have a turkey and a turkey breast in the freezer and a couple hams - so even if I had no other meat - I would be good for a long while. THAT is the reason we hunt for the deals and keep our freezers stocked!!!!
If you can take advantage of the cheap turkey prices and have room - get what you can store! You could also can the meat.
These deals are fantastic and come at a time when grocery prices have been up. Look for baking items in the next few weeks as well - they will all be going on sale. My niece works for a WM produce dept. in southern IN, and they have reduced all their fresh cranberries to .99/lb. Not sure if that is everywhere or just there. Might be worth checking. Making sauce or marmalades or making juice - super good ways to use them at such a good price.
I will have a post of ALL the ways to eat/use T-day leftovers - IT AINT JUST FOR THANKSGVING ANYMORE!
I hope many of you can take advantage of one or more of these deals. A lovely meal can be had for your family with minimal cost.
Have a great day. Stay warm. SMILE!!!

We got snow. It blew snow all day yesterday and in the late afternoon it began to stick. The temps went into the teens. Brrr! Looks like 1/2 inch of snow. So glad I bought milk yesterday and don't need to go anywhere until tomorrow when I go to work. :) It's probably slick because the ground was not cold yet so snow may have melted on contact with the road. I can't see the road from my house so it will be a surprise tomorrow. Heh heh heh.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know I'll be going to my son's house for Thanksgiving and I usually take mashed potatoes. One year I took corn pudding but they didn't eat it so I won't do that again! ;)
Looking forward to warmer temps in a couple of days.

Wow, lots of people got snow and cold. I kept hearing of all the accidents yesterday morning - (those who forget how to drive on snow each year!) Our road looked good, as did my drive and front walk. Just the grass had snow for the most part.
DeleteI am going to family for Thanksgiving as well. You could send that corn casserole to me - I love that stuff. My neighbor that moved, made the best I had ever had.
Yes indeed, not ready for winter yet here either.
It definitely got colder! I haven't been out yet but it seems blustery, just looking out the window. Will have to be out soon for my dental appointment.
ReplyDeleteLots of good ideas for putting together a holiday meal without breaking the bank. Not sure if Erin is working but we always work around her schedule.
Stay warm! I know I'll be glad to get back home in my sweats.
Stay warm and safe out there. It doesn't feel as bad as yesterday outside to me. There are sure a lot of deals out there this year, it just takes a little looking!
DeleteOh my gosh, snow already? We've had some at home but I didn't think it would happen as far south as you are.
ReplyDeleteI had to pull up the fellow's videos - he is funny! And I can see some of his ideas being quite tasty.
Yep, snow - even further south than me too.
DeleteOh he is a hoot to watch, but has some really good ideas. I got many. It is entertaining as well.
Huh. Went out to sweep snow off the deck and it's 2 inches, not 1/2 inch. Trash collection cancelled because of ice on the roads. At least today is sunny. Not warm though.
ReplyDeleteMaryB
That is what they said we got. Out trash is supposed to pick up today, they are a little late so far - but they will come.
DeleteA lot of those guys do salting of the streets too - so probably worked a lot yesterday and Sunday.
Lots of great Thanksgiving deals that you mentioned, Cheryl. I just got my ad from Winn-Dixie and their turkeys are .49/lb. They have Libby’s canned veggies for 2/$1 (limit 6) on their weekend sale and I’m pretty sure that is less than Aldi’s price for their veggies. I prefer frozen but like to have some cans on hand, especially green beans. I haven’t looked over the ad thoroughly yet.
ReplyDeleteIt was an unseasonably “cold” morning here at 38 F. I turned on my heat last night which is very unusual for this time of year. But it has warmed up and is sunny now. I dropped a heavy winter coat (from my Virginia days) and a pretty-much new quilted robe from my mom at Salvation Army this morning. I had been waiting until cooler weather to donate them but was surprised it came so soon.
Those are some really good deals. It is always nice to have some canned as a back up.
DeleteI keep the heat low, but it is on at nights for sure. Lucky you to not have to have yours on.
Someone will get good use of those items. That is nice.
Stay warm!
I can still do better than the deals, with homemade piecrusts, home canned or frozen pumpkin, homemade rolls, homemade stuffing from left over bread most heels, homegrown potatoes. But I realize not everyone can or is willing to do this.
ReplyDeleteYes mam! I can too!!!! I get it. Not everyone knows how to do those things or wants to - but many things are so much cheaper being homemade. I have made dressing myself for years - so stinking easy. Pie crust - easy.
DeleteI have always said if you can read and follow instructions you can cook!!!!
I think our snow went your way. We are starting to melt here now and the weather looks pretty good for the next week.
ReplyDeleteI love me some turkey.
God bless.
Our snow will be gone in a day or so and warmer temps coming here too. Nice!
DeleteI am tired of frozen preserved garden veg. I bought fresh broccoli and cauliflower at Costco. Yes it's a lot for one person but I assure you, I can eat all of it in 10days. LOVE my veggies :-) A side of grilled chicken and I'm a happy camper.
ReplyDeleteMmmmm - it sounds good. Sometimes you just need a little fresh to favor the palette! I love both of those items.
DeleteWe cannot handle a turkey, too heavy and unwieldy. I bought a Stovetop Stuffing ($1.87) and Campbell's soup ($1) at WM today. I have most everything I need from after sales last year with things still in date. But, I definitely look for brands I want and cheap.
ReplyDeleteAlways good to be on the lookout for items on sale to add back in. I plan on doing a turkey breast - much smaller and easier to handle. Last year I had a boneless turkey breast and it was much smaller to handle.
DeleteWe have been buying an extra turkey or turkey breast for the last few years now. We love turkey, so why not eat at other times than just Thanksgiving?
ReplyDeleteExactly. I have had for all sorts of holidays and just for regular meals. It is such a cheap find - no reason not to get extra.
