Weekly Wrap Up 5/10

Hello and HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all the mommas out there.  Whether your children are human or fur - yours or someone else's that you love -have a happy day!!

It is a lovely morning, the sun is shining and it is in the mid 50's.  I went out to a neighborhood cat at the side door, kitties meowing out back (hungry) and birds yelling at me as soon as I hit the back walk.  Boy, do I have animals that are trained!
We had a lot of rain this past week - lots.  I think there is only one day predicted of rain this coming week, and the temps will finally get to May temps by the end of the week.

The roses and the clematis are covered in blooms.  Actually, had one clematis flower open yesterday.  My little flying jewels are back. The spiderwort and vinca are blooming.  The peonies and poppies are going full force.  Aahhhhh, I love it.

This week of frugal:
  • Cleaned and refilled the hummingbird feeders and watering holes
  • Have 2 full barrels of rainwater (110 gal.)
  • Neighbor brought me some zucchini plants
  • Changed out the flags and door decor
  • I weed whacked the entire yard
  • Picked many bouquets of peonies for the house - the house smells delish!
  • Cleaned inside windows (kitty kisses) and mirrors
  • Lunch with 2 old friends.  Best part was the wonderful conversation and the great tasting margarita!
  • Put the tiller together
  • Took neighbor a bouquet of peonies
  • Walks when not raining
  • I planted lettuce I had started earlier and some green onions
  • Got FREE hamburger buns and 3 FREE recent Woman's World magazines at thrift store - bought a $2 box of Cheerios for future crispy bars
  • Drinking sparkling fruity water (Soda Stream)
  • Just doing all the normal stuff
Meals this past week:
Beef filet (freezer), potato wedges and fresh veggies
Ground beef/onion/mushrooms/gravy over rice
Beef/rice/bean nachos
Out - cheddar/bacon potato skins
Bean/rice/beef & cheese grilled wrap/burrito
Beef hotdog, potato cakes (freezer) and fruit
Swiss burger, corn on cob (freezer) and salad

I am looking forward to warmer temps and getting that garden tilled and planted!!
Fireworks have already started around here by individuals doing their yearly illegal ones!  Ugh!  They are so loud - and sure do give you a jump.  I feel for all the animals.

My nieces MIL received her blanket Friday for her 82nd birthday and they said she loved it.
Her and a few of her children and a couple grands - her in chair and my niece with hand on her shoulder. She has suffered so many medical maladies in recent years, I sure hope she gets some joy from this.

How was your week?  Do you have your garden or pots planted yet?  Planning garden?  I sure hope everyone grows something - it all helps.  Did you get any deals this week?
I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead and have health and safety.  Enjoy your Mother's Day.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

Be watchful, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong.  Let all you do be done in love.
1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Dear Lord we humbly come to You in thanks for all the love and wonders that we received this week.  Thank You for loving us unconditionally.  May we all go forward and show love to all we meet, and may we forgive all transgressions from others with an open heart.  Help us each one grow in faith and courage and love.  AMEN

  1. Happy mother's day to all! The past wk has been occupied with yard clean-up & yard equipment maintenance (the most challenging). I did manage to change the belt on the garden tiller. The push mower needs a new spark plug (I think). It won't start so I'll start with that. Tomorrow I'll hook up the stock waterer, another challenge for me. I remind myself that I can call on good neighbors for help. Not a drop of rain in the barrels yet. I attended the funeral of a friend. There are only 2 left from that group of 6 we used to run with. I enjoyed supper & cards with friends one night. I'm on the hunt for a new used vehicle so went "shopping" yesterday in the city before watching my granddaughter's lacrosse game. In the kitchen: quinoa salad; chocolate chip cookies; butter chicken; chicken sandwiches. Cheryl, something I've started to do is substitute finely shredded cabbage for lettuce. It ticks a lot of boxes - stores well & long; provides the crunch & green; more digestable for me than lettuce. Have a good week.

    1. You have been busy. Yes, equipment upkeep is tough and sometimes we just try to problem solve.
Sorry for your loss. Your group sounds like mine - we had 10 that camped together, only 3 left. Sure makes you think.
I do that with cabbage often. It lasts so much longer and it is so good for you. I always have cabbage on hand - it stays pretty cheap.
      Have a super week.

  2. Happy Mother’s Day! Lovely t-shirt quilt for your niece’s MIL, Cheryl. I never bought printed t-shirts but I know many people have piles of them so this is a wonderful use.

I am enjoying having the time to do things I enjoy. I went to the movies last week ($6 Tuesday) and plan to go again this week. (I may ride the bus to try it this time.) I’m back to working on my family history with a special project in mind. My mom and I had so much fun doing family history in the pre-Internet days, visiting libraries all around New England. I have my grandmother’s piano and I’m thinking of taking some lessons to see how it goes. (I took lessons as a child.) I had lunch with a friend. Put out a bag of groceries for the USPS food drive yesterday.

Also I’m buying some small things I had put off for a long time - watch battery and band, pjs, garden bag, garden gloves, slacks. Yes I had the money before but was so used to scrimping that I would not buy things until they became absolutely necessary. And last year I had so many big bills (most related to the old house), most of which I tried to squeeze out of cash flow and not touch savings.

We got a short downpour at 9 p.m. last night but are still desperate for more. Maybe more rain on Tuesday, hopefully.

I’m enjoying my “simple” life. Barbara M.

    1. I have had a lot of printed shirts over the years. It is a good use for those not worn longer.
I love that you are just enjoying life now. I haven't been to a movie in decades. How fun on maybe taking lessons.
I have finally loosened up a little too. Sometimes it just feels good to get those things you have put off for so long. You had a lot going on for a long time, it is time you enjoy yourself some. Happy for you!!!!
Glad you got at least a little rain.
Have a fantastic week and enjoy!

  4. Excellent devotional! Concise verse on how to live our lives.

That's a great picture of your quilt with your niece's MIL and family. I'm sure she loves the quilt and all the love that went into it.

Your lunch with friends sounds like fun, including the margarita!

We took Riley to the vet yesterday to be put down. He could barely breathe, consequently couldn't drink or eat. He was obviously in pain and we couldn't stand by and watch him suffer. He has been my constant companion for over fourteen years so I will have to adjust to my days without him. Sweet boy with lots of personality. I don't think that Jacob realizes that he is gone. At least he doesn't seem to miss him.

We have had enough rain for a while, thank you ever so much. Will probably go out and get some more weeding done in the flower beds and mulch spread. My goal is to get all that done and dusted by June. We shall see.

Enjoy this lovely day! See you Tuesday!

    3. I am so sorry for your Riley. That is just the toughest thing to do. You don't want them to suffer and you still want them here. My heart goes out to you.
Hope Jacob does ok now - you keep him close by.
That is just a tiny bit of her family - it is huge, lots of kids and grands.
It is just beautiful out today - just came in from walking the neighborhood. I need to be doing more weeding as well. It never ends and well, the rain sure didn't help!
Take care and snuggle Jacob. Have a good week.

  5. I finally bit the bullet and bought some tomato plants as my second sowing failed too (no idea why). Then just today I sowed some cut and come again lettuce seeds and some coriander seeds. The potatoes my husband planted into growing bags are going mad! I also tackled resizing my second large velvet curtain and this one came up perfectly first time. I will redo the second one, but not straight away.
It isn't Mother's Day here, but I know that it is in the USA, Canada and elsewhere. I hope all mothers have a lovely day.

    1. I will be going tomorrow I think and getting some plants. Wanted to wait until the big Mother's Day rush was done!
Sometimes, try as we might, we just can't get seeds to germinate. Glad the potatoes are doing good. YAY, on getting the second curtain done easily.
      Have a beautiful week.

  9. My goodness, that quilt is a stunning gift. I am sure the giftee loved it, heck I would !!!
Your week sounds just the right combination of work/rest/social to me. I'd like all my weeks to be like that, however there is no rest for the wicked and mine this week has just been work/work/work and driving Linda to have her wrist reset after she had some type of reaction to it. This time she has a much lighter wrapping and after four days no reaction, so it looks to be a keeper. But honestly I feel we could have done without the conversation between the two hospital workers about their sexual escapades. Thank goodness neither of them spoke Polish because Linda kept on muttering Dziwka so often i was sure they would catch on, but no they were oblivious to any decent manners or being called indecent names by an elderly lady. Later retelling the story to my daughter, she urged me to put in a complaint, but I just couldn't be bothered to get into all that.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to a less smutty, drier and warmer week. Take care, Louise

    1. Thank you. It should keep her warm (she is always cold).
You are always so busy! Always on the go. Poor Linda - that is a shame she had to have things redone. Goodness sakes - you would grown adults would know better than to talk like that in front of any patient. I sure would have made a complaint. That is just unacceptable behavior. Hopefully someone will report them - because you know it happens with others.
Hope you both have a lovely week and less stress.

  10. That quilt is beautiful! You did a great job on it, Cheryl. I didn't get much done this week outside like I wanted to because I had to put in some extra hours at work, but on Saturday we went and got some tomato and herb plants. My husband wants to try to grow strawberries in a planter this year, so we bought some. I've never grown them before, so we will see how it goes. Have a wonderful week!

Some weeks are that way - and you had to work - so that was accomplishing something, just not outdoors.
I plan to get some plants today. Good luck with the strawberries. I have never grown - although my parents did. Fresh strawberries are so yummy.
      Have a great week.

  11. Happy Mother's day to all.
My garden is doing well. I have little spoon tomatoes, sugar baby watermelons, Tam Jalapeno peppers, thai read peppers, zukes and squash along with a bunch of herbs. I have two more garden beds to set up still but I am afraid I might have missed the growing times. It is going to be too hot soon. UGH. I suppose I could do okra though, lol.
This week my cousin is flying in from Dallas and we are going to the beach for a few days. BEFORE tourist season and the water gets too hot and gross, lol. It costs a little more, but is so worth it.
    Have a great week everyone!

Oh the beach!!!! It has been a lot of years since I have seen an ocean. Decades!! Enjoy it to the fullest and enjoy your time with your cousin.
      Have a great one.

  12. It sounds like you had a lovely week, Cheryl and your meals all sound delicious.
I've really enjoyed the cooler weather. It's so nice not to go straight from using the heater to using the AC. But it looks like the AC will go on this week. I see highs in the 80's here.
How awesome that you have the photo of your niece presenting the quilt you made. I am sure she will treasure it!!
Have a great week my friend!

    1. It is nice to have no heat or AC - sure helps the electric bill.
I did have a nice week. It was kind of slow and just relaxing really.
My niece hopes someday to get the blanket to keep as a remembrance. I love that she sent me a picture. The blanket looks better that way than just lying flat on the bed (when I took a pic).
Thanks - you have a fantastic one!

  15. Cheryl, I read every post but rarely comment, but I've been thinking of you these last few days because of a book I'm reading. 'LIttle Heathens' by Mildred Armstrong Kalish. She writes of growing up in Iowa during the Depression; of life on the farm, of chores and meals; home remedies and gardens and resourcefulness. Even a few ol' timey recipes. I think you and many of your readers would really enjoy it. Melinda
