A is for Apple & Yummy Fall Eating

Hello all you lovely folks.  So happy to have you hear this morning and hoping all are well and safe.
It is pretty cloudy out right now, yet it is 66*F.  Yesterday got back to about 80*.  We have rain coming into tonight and overnight.  Yesterday I got a little shower in the afternoon, but all it did was make it humid!
I did do a bit more yard work early yesterday, and may go out this morning and get a bunch of peppers and green tomatoes - we have a small chance of frost on Saturday morning.
It is really supposed to cool and get windy after the rain for a couple days.  Back to good by Monday.

I slept horribly last night - not sure what was up with that!  I looked at the clock at 5:30 this morning, and thought I will get up in a few minutes - then woke up at 6:30!!  I never get up that late.
Fall is APPLE season!  I love me some apples - I like several different varieties.  I tend to lean towards a good crispy one that is a combo of sweet and tart.

Apples can be fixed and eaten in so many ways other than just fresh.  I am a fan of fried apples, mom used to fix them often in the fall.  We had a couple of apple trees, so that was a free food!
You can make cobbler, crisp, pie, or sauce.  Apple cider is also a fall favorite - Mmmmmm.
A good fresh apple and peanut butter is a tasty treat and it is filling.
Apples are full of vitamins and minerals and like the old saying states - "an apple away keeps the doctor away"!  I eat apples often (all year) as well as citrus.  I do love my sweets at times - but give me fruit and I happy!

Now there are also fun and maybe some not quite as healthy ways to eat apples as well.  Lots of people have campfires and fall gatherings and I think either of these would be fun, for children and adults alike.

I saw this on FB and thought it was a neat idea.  Water in a crockpot - add jars of chocolate and/or caramel for dipping and apple wedges on sticks.  A muffin tin with toppings.  How fun is that?  I think this would be a great way to have a festive display of apples and goodies.

I have shown this one before - but it is a fun one as well.  Slice apples and insert sticks, then drizzle with melted chocolate and add goodies and let them set up.

Simple and fun ways to make the fall season a bit more festive.  I think youngsters would love to come home from school to the slices for a snack!

I really like a good caramel apple.  I don't get them often, and I usually cut them up to eat - oh those things are messy - but so good!

I hope you can get some good apples this fall and enjoy them in your favorite way.  Now is the time to get good pricing.  Stores are even carrying multiple varieties.  Maybe you have your own tree and can get them for free.  I wish I had an apple tree.
What is your favorite way to eat apples??
I remember as a kid I used to sit behind the garage and stuff myself with green apples - mom always told me I would end up with a belly ache!!!  I sure did love apples, even back then.

Have a super weekend and relax and enjoy each other.
Have a great day!

  1. Hi Cheryl what a beautiful post! I love apples too. My favorite is apple pie. I make them the traditional double crust way and my husband uses a French crumb top. I also love Carmel apples I used to make them every year, but now with my dental work, Carmel doesn't like me anymore. :). Our favorite apple that we eat most days is the Honey Crisp. But I also love Gala apples. Back in the 90's we had our first little house and I planted 3 Gala apple trees in the back yard. It took three years before we had any fruit then it started to produce baskets full. It was wonderful, I miss those trees so much. I use green Granny Smith apples in my pies and tarts. I usually use a mixture of Red Delicious and Granny Smith when I make apple sauce. I hope you have a lovely day ahead :)

    1. Good morning. Mom used to make French apple pie - oh goodness, I haven't had one of those for years. Nothing more American than apple pie! All the types you mentioned are all so good. I wish I had thought to plant when we first moved here - the tree would be huge now.
      Thank you and you too!

  2. I like Gala apples, they're tart and sweet. They make good apple salad, they're lovely cooked as a chunky sauce, they're tasty as a snack. I like to make my sauce with chopped up apples (skin on), raisins, pineapple juice, ginger, and cinnamon.

  3. You, the Farmer and my oldest daughter Alana all love green apples! Love all the different ways to dress up an apple, make a dessert of it. I will have apple slices with peanut butter for breakfast some mornings. A friend I played euchre with used to make a French apple pie and I used her recipe several times. The Farmer prefers cherry pie so occasionally I will bake an apple pie for Erin.

Weather is changing as expected. It is the middle of October. Where did the year go?

Enjoy your weekend! See you on Sunday1

    1. I was always a fan of green apples!
They are just so versatile and can be fixed sweet or hearty. Dessert or side in a meal.
Looks to get a little warmer again come the first of the week. Time is sure slipping by.

  4. I love apples. But putting caramel or chocolate with them is not for me. Apple pie is good once in awhile but like most of my food I prefer apples plain - an apple cut up in slices and eaten as a snack or dessert. I do like cut up apples in salad.

My favorite apples are Fuji. Normally $3.59 for a 3 pound bag at Aldi but I was there this morning and they were only $2.69 for a 3 pound bag. That’s a nice price cut and I bought a bag even though they were not on my list. Apples keep well and I never waste them. Unlike several commenters, I’m not a fan of Gala. They are normally the least expensive apples at Aldi and are in fact on sale this week for $1.99 for a 3 pound bag. I used to buy them but now pay a bit more for Fuji. Barbara M.

    1. I like Fuji as well, shoot I like most all apples. Simple and plain - all good. That is a good price under $1 lb. They do seem to last a long while, and if you can get them cheap I sure would too.
Aldi has lowered a lot of prices for this month!
I used to be a Granny Smith fan - and every couple years, my tastes change.
      Enjoy!

  5. I like to make spicy apple cake which is lovely as a dessert with ice-cream, cream or custard.
When my Mum was expecting me she had a craving for Granny Smith apples. She used to buy herself a bag full every day.

  6. We've been to our favorite orchard twice so far this season. We bought 1/2 bushel bags. The 2nd time we got 24 varieties! It's been fun trying the different ones. The oldest variety was one originally grown in France in 1600s.

I made a little applesauce so far. I may make apple bread but we tend to eat them fresh. I was just reading the other day how good apple peels are for your health. I never peel apples even when baking but I know some who only eat them peeled.

    1. I wish my favorite orchard was still close by. It closed up a few years ago - now they are all far away.
How fun to get to try so many different varieties.
I like fresh best and eat it all too. I do like fried apples and do peel for that.

  7. I so wish we had an apple tree or two, but pretty sure Harvey would say the cherry trees and pear trees are enough. Add in the haskap bushes, the goji berry bushes, and my kiwi we should do well for fresh fruit very soon. I would love some grapes though.

    God bless.

  11. Good morning Cheryl, I am not sure I will get to post on your weekly update so will do it today. Hope your week was a good one. My church does a food collection this upcoming weekend, and I can’t get there during the right time periods, so I am going to check out the nearest food pantry and give them the food. Before I moved across town, I used to drop food off at the local pantry, so it is good I will learn where this one is. I just started my 2027 budget now that some insurance, social security and other costs are being sent out. Sigh. Otherwise, all good here. Hilogene in Az.
