Frugal Happenings 2/25

Good morning everyone.
We are actually seeing some blue in the sky and a little sunshine this morning!!!  Both have been missing all week.  Rain, rain, and more rain was our week.  It rained every single day.
We have a lake in the back yard - which is starting to recede some this morning.

I am so thankful that the lake is in the yard and not in our home, as it is for so many.  I am also thankful that the precipitation was rain and NOT snow.  We would be waste high in that stuff.  So dreary days can be something to be thankful for - so many were not as fortunate as us.
Prayers for all of those in the path of extreme weather and flooding.

Our daylight hours have increased so much this month - I love that.  It won't be long and spring will be here.  Hang in there everyone!

This little guy was on the handrail right outside my kitchen window and door.  I was washing dishes and he kept trying to get my attention!  He appears to be trying to tell me something!  "Excuse me, I need a nut".  He waited till I opened the door and handed him a nut - then went on his way!  They beg at the door and climb my leg outside to get nuts.

My frugal week:
  • We had FREE HBO and Cinemax last weekend through Monday - so DVR'd some movies for G.  He is utilizing Netflix a lot as well.
  • More spring cleaning
  • I needed to send out a birthday and a sympathy card this week.  I had both in my card stash and I had stamps as well - so no spending.  Mailman picked them up for me.
  • Baked a raspberry pie
  • Placed the spring décor on the doors
  • "Blew" out the computer to clean.  The fan had been running often - so I turned it off and used canned air and cleaned it well.  Fan stopped running so much.
  • Had 2 days that heat was off completely and windows open for fresh air (in between rain showers)
  • Meals from scratch
  • All normal things
  • I only went out one day - so saved on gas
  • Kroger to get asparagus - .97/lb.!  Got 6 pounds - yum.
  • Also got bread and buns on clearance, 6 boxes of spaghetti (.39) and .99 bags of tomatoes and bell peppers - Both were palm size and nice
  • I also found Nice & Easy hair color on clearance for 1.59 a box!!!!!!!  Oh my goodness!  I got the 6 boxes that were 'close' in color to what I usually buy.  Those normally run 7.99 a box without coupons.  CRAZY PRICE (remember each box gives me 3 dye jobs).  I also got 2 boxes of knee high hose - 10 pair per box for 1.89.  That will last me the rest of my life - as I rarely wear any hose at all.
  • Lastly at Kroger I got 5 - 14 oz. bags of Skittles for 1.19 a bag.  Dated 12/2018 - so they will be great for Easter or Christmas goodies for the kids.
  • I then stopped at Safeway on the way home as they had a canned tuna sale.  I  got 30 cans of Chicken of The Sea tuna for .59/can for the stockpile.  I was running low as the last time I caught a good sale was about a year ago.  I cleaned the shelf off.  I may go back before the sale ends and see if they re-stocked.

My meals this past week:
Chipped beef gravy and toast and scrambled eggs
Cheesy tator tot casserole and side salad  - 2X
Jalapeno smoked sausage, steamed veggies (broccoli, cauliflower & carrots) with cheese sauce
Tuna patties, baked beans and salad
Cheesy steak burgers, sautéed onions and oven fries
Homemade stew

Snacks - pie, microwave S'mores, veggies and dip

It has been a pretty quiet week.  Basically I have just been piddling around inside - as weather did not permit outside activities.  I am so ready to do some yard work!
This month is just about gone and it's only a little over 3 weeks until calendar spring.  WOW

How was your week?  Any great deals to be had?  Have you added to your long term pantry?

May you all be safe and free from harsh weather.  God bless and keep you in His protective arms this coming week.  Health, happiness and frugal ways to all!
Blessing from our humble home to yours!

  1. Greetings! We’ve had warmer weather, too, into the 30’s with rain and snow. It’s a bit of a slushy mess, at the moment. I’m happy Spring is on the way!
I bought 8 cans of tuna at 79 cents a can. I haven’t seen 59 cents in quite awhile! I also got 10 boxes of elbow and spiral pasta at 89 cents a box. We don’t have much in the way of yellow stickers, here. Once in awhile I come across a nice markdown but it’s been awhile.
Love the squirrel! My husband would have a fit if I befriended one. They have a nasty habit of chewing up his air filter in the car. They are very social.

    1. Hi Debbie. I am loving the warmer days as well.
This is the first we have had tuna that cheap in about a year. usually once a year during Lent I can find it pretty darn cheap.
Most dry goods are in a section of our Kroger store. They have a section of shelves just for that - it usually at the end of the pet food aisles in the stores around here. My main shopping place (clearance)!!!!

I love the little squirrels - and yes they are social critters! I can understand him not liking them if they created car damage. So far so good here - I guess I feed them enough to keep them happy!

Have a wonderful week - here's hoping it continues to warm up for you.

  2. Good day! I haven't been anywhere to find any deals. Still are having bad weather more snow tonight and tomorrow. So I have been cooking from the pantry. DH did take me to the store last week to get fruit and veggies, we still had snow on the roads. I have been mostly crocheting and watching old movies or movies I've not had the patience to sit through before.

    1. Hey you! wow on getting so much snow. I guess that is normal in your area.
Good job on using the pantry. Sometimes we just need to hibernate and do those things we rarely do! Snow is a good reason for that!
      Take care and stay safe.

    2. So funny on watching movies you didn't have the patience for before, me too!

    3. Hi Ellen. Glad to see you post!
      Take care

  3. We have squirrels just like that, so cute. Great buys and so happy you have warmer weather and that your water is receding. Our weather is just strange.

    1. I love my squirrels! I think most of this week will be highs in the 40's and 50's.
I do believe everyone has had strange weather this year.
      Take care.

  4. Hi Cheryl,
I'm a new follower of your blog (even though I live in New Zealand) :) I like frugal tip sort of blogs, and especially loved the picture of the squirrel too. I am a little envious of the hair dye prices !!! my word..the cheapest I have ever seen that brand here on sale is about $ you did well. Blessings to you ~ Linda

    1. Hello Linda. So glad to have you here. We love to hear tips from all over the world - we can all get so many neat ideas.
I about fell over when I saw the hair dye. I have NEVER seen a price like that either. Once in a while I see it on sale for 5.99 - so that is why I grabbed it.
I hope you continue to stop by and please share ideas!
      Have a lovely week.

  5. We used to live on an acre with woods behind our backyard. Next door neighbor Steve was so proud of the multiple fruit trees he put in his backyard. Each morning my mom and I would sit at our table by the window and watch this very pesky squirrel pop into Steve's backyard and heave a peach off Steve's last peach tree in the row and then roll it across the open space to the woods. The best part was listening to Steve complain about how little his peach tree was producing. We never told him about the squirrel.

    1. That is a funny story. Those little critters are very creative about their food. Quite industrious and so funny too watch.
I have seen them get the ear corn off the feeder, and run off with a whole ear of corn in their mouths. It's hilarious.
      Have a good one.

  6. You are a squirrel whisperer for sure. That little guy will coming back to see you.
When we lived in the the country, we had a palomino named Winston. He would whinny when he saw me at the kitchen window until I took him a carrot.

Great deals you found this week!

    1. I like that - squirrel whisperer!!!
Oh they see me and they come running - knowing they get goodies! Too cute.
Animals are so smart and they have us trained well.
      Have a good one.

  7. That is an amazing price on the tuna. I would have bought it all too. The best we get it is 79cents.
I worked a ton this week so didn't do any food shopping. Lived out of the pantry. Did grab a pizza Friday night but had a coupon for it. Its a new place so we wanted to try it out. Cooked my last pumpkin from October. 22 pounds went into the freezer. My son brought home more goodies from work so I will be running some to a friend and my sister.
Had a plumbing problem last Sunday night but my FIL came Monday to fix it(retired plumber). My daughter was home as it was President's day so she let him in. Didn't have to take off or go in late.
Have a great week. Glad you didn't get water in the house.

    1. Marybeth - it was a great price for sure.
Sorry you worked a lot - but hopefully that means more money for the till!! Fantastic on the pumpkin - you sure got a good yield.
Plumbers can be so very expensive - so it is wonderful you have a 'built in' one!! We used to be that way with an electrician.

Hoping you have a wonderful (and another) frugal week!

  8. Awww what a cute picture of the squirrel! I was going to say that you have trained him well, but I think he has trained you into giving him nuts. :D Great deals and shopping!
I'm glad that it has stopped raining. A friend posted pictures from Evansville; so much flooding :(
    have a great week!

    1. Kathy - my yes, they have me trained for sure!
It is beautiful today - sun, blue skies and lovely temps - such a fantastic change. I guess March is supposed to come in like a Lion though.

Pictures of the flooding both North and South of here have been terrible. My heart goes out to them
      Stay safe

  9. That squirrel is so cute! What great deals you got at Kroger...You are stocked up on dye for a long time.
It's beautiful here too today. Over 50 degrees with sunshine. A little Spring break. Have a great week.

    1. Thanks Vickie. We are having another pretty day today - the last for a few days I guess.
      That's ok - I'll take what I can get!
      Have a good one.

  10. YOu got some great deals! I love that little cute is he/she? :)
