Frugal Happenings 9/16

Good morning.  Hard to believe it is already the middle of September!
Hope this post finds everyone well.

We got to keep the AC most of the week, till Friday.  I finally got the basement all dried out and the musty smell has gone.  Thank goodness.
We are back in the mid to upper 80's and that will continue through the next week.  I guess summer isn't done yet!
I know that our water problems of last week was nothing, compare to what the folks in the South East are going through.  I pray for their safety.  It is so sad, and so many are losing everything.

WOW I went to my 45th graduating class reunion last night.  Man that sounds awful - I AM OLD!  It was a pretty good time, catching up with people.  We had a huge class (around 900) and only about 1/8 of the people showed up.  I still come across names and people I have never heard of!  I have always said that living in the same place all these years - that it was weird not running into schoolmates.  Well, I probably do, I just don't know them!

My angel watching over the yard - Love the 'cross' shadow she emits.
My frugal week:
  • Changed out handbags this week - to a more 'fall-ish' one
  • Cut G's and my hair
  • Colored my hair at home
  • Made another quart of ice cream
  • Canned 5 pints of chopped tomatoes.  Many split and had spots after last weeks rain - so I salvaged all I could and canned.  Waste not.........
  • Picked about 15 lbs. of produce
  • G had his home doctor visit this week.  All is good!
  • Finally dried out and got some much needed yard work done
  • Line dried laundry
  • Received a FREE Country Woman magazine in the mail.  Trying to entice me back.
  • I went out once to get G's scripts - so I ran to Kroger to get cat litter.  I got 4 - 4 packs of highlighters for kids holiday baskets for .59 each on clearance.  Also got 4 - 10 packs of mechanical pencils for .79 each.  Bought NO groceries again.
  • AC off most of week
  • Took our friend/neighbor to Dr. this week and found a new thrift store in the same complex!  I went in and looked for a few minutes - it's huge and cheap.  I need to go back and SHOP!
  • Friend/neighbor gave us 7 cans of condensed soup (mainly mushroom and onion - which he hates) and 2 cans of kidney beans and a half pound of pecan halves (which he hates).  His EX gf brought all that to his house trying to get  him to eat it.  It didn't work - so I got it!  YAY!!
  • Just doing all our regular stuff
I still have 2 hummingbirds hanging out - All the others seem to have left.  They sure are drinking the nectar like crazy.

Last weekend I spent a rainy afternoon watching the 1949 classic The Secret Garden.  I thoroughly enjoyed it.  That has always been one of my favorite books.  Old moves are just so cool to see.

Meals this past week:  (Easy week)
Hamburger veggie soup 2X
Pizza
Leftover pizza and salad
Turkey & cheese sandwiches, potato salad and sliced tomatoes
Steak burgers/onions, fried corn, and salad
G had turkey sandwich & chips and dip - I ate at reunion

All other leftovers used for lunches

Sure sign it's almost fall - the sedum is blooming.  Love my 'live forever'.  They sure attract bees and butterflies!

So there you have it  not very exciting at all.  That's OK, I like it that way.
How was your week?  Did you get any deals?  How are the gardens doing?

I hope and pray that you are all safe and healthy.  Prayers going out for anyone in the storm affected areas.  Life isn't always easy - but it always good.

Blessings from our humble home to yours!

  1. I love that it is the middle of September because I can already tell it's just a little bit cooler and I love that. This is my favorite time of the year weather wise.

I feel the same way about people I went to school with. We had around 450 graduate and I look at some of them on Facebook and I never knew them. It's nuts! LOL

Very nice items from your neighbor, yay!

The Secret Garden is such a good book and movie. We have several different versions of the movie.

I hope you have another great week, Cheryl. :)

Thanks. I hope you have a great week as well.

  3. Glad to hear G is well and you also found a new thrift store. Always fun. I ran into two schoolmates at their garage sale. I didn't know who they were but they knew me. I kind of remember their names. It was a lot of fun at the reunion I bet. Have a great week.

  4. Now you've got me wondering if I should switch MY purse! I have several, but I'm kind of liking the idea of switching to my brown corduroy purse. :) Sounds like you had a pretty good week; I'm glad your basement is doing okay. Love that your neighbor brought over so much good stuff!

    1. I always change my purse at the seasons. Just one of those things I always do.
The neighbor and us share a lot. He gets lots of tomatoes - he gives us what he doesn't need or want. We do things for each other. Kind of nice.

      Have a good one.

    1. Hello Phyllis - WOW you are a determined lady to start at the beginning. Thank you so much. I just love getting new people to share ideas.

Harbor Freight is where the greenhouse came from and was a build it yourself kit. Mine is 6' x 8'. We used a deck between garage and shed as a base - then put it up on 4 x 4's to raise it a bit. It is metal and double walled poly vinyl for sides and top. 2 vent windows that open on top. I think it was about $350. My brother got one too and uses his a lot. Mine has become a 'cat house'. I even put in a cat door for them.

It worked nicely when I used it as a greenhouse. Can't start too early in cold (at nights) -or get heat mats for nights.
      Hope that helps a little.

Look forward to seeing you post!
      have a good week.

  6. Sorry I am so late to post this week. I have been busy with the garden and canning, work and school activities. Why do they hit us with so many things the first 2 weeks of school? My list is here: https://mcoia.blogspot.com/2018/09/my-frugal-list-week-of-september-10-2018.html

    1. I am late as well. It is amazing how school kids just get slammed right off the bat. No working up to it. Have a good one.
