Go with Natural - Much to be Said

Hello to all on this last day of April.  Hope you are all well.  It is a beautiful morning here today.  Looks like by the end of the day, we will be back into rain again.  It has been such a wet April - sure hope that says something about May's growing season!
Yesterday was rain off and on a lot of the day and the humidity was unreal.  I had forgotten how uncomfortable humidity was!  I managed to make my outing, and it was dry upon my going and I came home in a downpour - but all is good, and I made it safely.

Today I am going to post a couple of items of things we should all be doing for our personal health and well-being and then a couple natural/homemade recipe ideas.  We need to stay on top of our health by doing as much as WE personally can.  Taking care of ourselves is important - and doing some of the simplest things help.
Water is essential to all living things.  It is so important.  I know so many people who say "I can't drink plain water" - odds are you don't want to!  Add a piece of fruit or a cucumber slice for a bit of flavor and DRINK!  I love ice cold water most days, but especially when I am hot!  I always keep a jug of water in the fridge.  I have a couple bottles I refill myself, as I do not buy bottled water.
Water is not just for mornings in my house!
Again - so important to life.  It does so much more than we think.  I am outside at least a little bit 365 days a year - no matter the weather.  I do not feel alive unless I get fresh air and sunshine.  When I get up each day and it gets daylight, I let the sunshine in my home until it gets too hot.  This is something I have always NEEDED.
I truly attribute my good health to enjoying the outdoors and sun, and fresh air and just getting out and moving each and every day.

Many people can't have salt.  I do really like salt and it doesn't really bother me much - but there are so many ways to get wonderful flavors in your cooking and salads and such without salt.  Put together your own blends of seasoning.  Whatever you like!!  You can use something like these or just make up your own.   You know exactly what is in it and can adjust to any palette.

You can make your own specialty sauces as well.  Sauces and dressings are really easy, often using the simple ingredients that we keep on hand all the time.

Funny - I do always keep a small bottle of Fireball whiskey on hand (called for in the Fireball BBQ sauce above).  No, I cannot stand whiskey, but I keep a small bottle for making a "hot toddy" in case of cold or flu.  I have always made that if I feel like I am getting sick, and it has always done the trick.  I cannot remember the last time I took a store-bought cold med.

So get out and enjoy that sunshine and fresh air - drink that water and stay hydrated and help yourself stay a little healthier.
Make a mix on your own and have a healthier version of store-bought.  No added ingredients you can't pronounce or don't know what they are!
Take your life back and make it wonderful.

Have a beautiful Wednesday!

Convenience Costs - Ways to be Mindful

Hello all.  I sure hope you are all well.  It is a very cloudy morning here.  Storms going through the north part of the city.  We are supposed to have storms later - of course, they are supposed to hit about the time I need to be out and about.  Fingers crossed they aren't too bad.
Grab a cup and sit for a minute.  Let us talk about convenience can cost us money.    I understand that we all buy things at time that just make things easier - but most usually 'from scratch' is cheaper.

Of course there are the basic things we should all heed:
Shopping alone is usually cheaper than with kids or spouse!
Cooking from scratch is usually cheaper
Shopping the store perimeter is the healthiest food - usually fresh or frozen
Shop early if you can - produce is usually fresher.  Of course, check with your grocer and see when they restock their shelves - so you can get the best and freshest
******
CONVENIENCE
*Don't buy those precut veggies and fruit in packs!  It costs a ton more than buying the whole item and cutting yourself.  ACTUALLY, you pay almost 2X the price for pre-cut.  Those precut salad mixes give you a few ounces for a lot of money!
Cut up your own and serve in a fun way!  Saves money!!!!!

*Individual packs of snacks cost a lot more.  Those multi packs of chips cost more than buying a big bag and doling out yourself.  Also snack packs of lunchmeat and crackers (Lunchables) - make your own.  Those premade packs cost a small fortune for what you get.
*Individual cans of flavored coffee or flavored tea or smoothie drinks.  You can make you own so easy and for a lot less.  I make flavored teas all the time that taste like those expensive cans/bottles
*Coffee pods - get one of the re-usable/washable pods and make your own with cans/bags of coffee (also no trash after)
*Granola bars - trail mix.  It is so easy to make your own and your bars are fresh, and you know what is in them
*Spices - know you don't have to get brand name.  You can buy lesser brands and still get good flavor
*Out of season goods always cost more than in season
*Bottled water.  If you don't like your tap water - get a filter.  The cost will work out much cheaper and it will last a long time (again - no trash after)
******

Always go with a list and a plan!!!!!  Now that being said - keep your eyes open for special deals!!  You never know what you might find.  It is always good to keep a bit of the budget open for unexpected deals.  Those deals are like money in the bank - they save you future spending.
I ran out yesterday to Kroger to get 3 things - 2 were their specials of the week.  Milk and strawberries and I wanted a few bananas.
Well, me being me, I walked around and looked.  Sure, I spent more than I planned, but I got some good deals.
1 lb. packs of taco seasoned ground beef for $2.10 a pound!!!!  1 lb. ground pork for 2.74 a pound!  Both are much cheaper than the best price for plain ground beef.  I brought them home, opened, portioned out and froze.  The pork makes the best smashed 'burgers' breaded and fried up like fritters.
Did I need these?  NOPE.  Are they healthy food?  Nope not really.  But for that price, they will make many a fun and cool snack on a hot day!
OK, this is something I have never purchased.  I found these marked down to .69 a can (manager special) and thought it would be a handy thing to have on the self for "in case".  Dated 2027.  I can donate or keep for a time that a fast cheap meal is needed.  No shame here.  Maybe not the heathiest - but sometimes if a person is hungry for whatever reason - healthy might go out the window. I got 4 cans

Think about ethnic markets if you have some around.  They often have a lot of fresh fruits and veggies that are a bit different than your grocery store - and foods that might be fun to try.  Also, spices are almost always cheaper.  There is a lot of variety at these stores.

Try to grow some herbs this year.  They can be grown in pots on your porch/patio or windowsill.  Growing your own and having fresh is super and it sure is cheap and convenient.

And as always - reduce waste.  Use things up and find new ways to reuse those foods left after a meal.  Try to go for ZERO waste!

I know there will be someone that thinks - "mind your business".  I am just putting out options that actually cost us more money, and if you are looking to save or looking to stock up cheaply - then these are some ideas you might want to follow.  We all want to get the best value for our money.  We need to open our minds to doing things a little differently.  We need to branch out a little.
It also saves on trash - less bags and plastic being used.

If you don't care how much you spend - well buy as many convenience foods you want.  That is your choice.
This is for those needing/wanting to save.  We often have to look outside the box.  There are good options out there that help us save some.

Do you have any ideas of things that can be made cheaper at home, than spending the big bucks at the store for?

Have a super day everyone!

Weekly Wrap Up 4/27

Hello and happy last Sunday of April.  I hope this finds you all well and safe.  Another week that has flown by, heading into a new month.
It is a chilly morning, as was yesterday morning.  Lots of ups and downs.  I still haven't planted anything but will do so after at least Mother's Day.
Last Sunday, Easter, I did not see the Easter bunny - but I did see the "Easter hog" - yes, it was my first sighting of the groundhog across the alley!

Enjoyed the nicer days this past week and tried to get some stuff done in preparing for planting season and just enjoying the great outdoors.

My frugal week:
  • I cooked a whole pork loin on Easter (from freezer) - cut it into 3 pieces before placing in crockpot.  I have 2 sections frozen now for easy meals later on
  • Cut my hair and colored (at home)
  • I did turn on the heat one cycle this AM - but have used none all the rest of the week, nor AC
  • Cut the grass and trimmed
  • Flipped the cushions on the glider out front (reversible) for a different look
  • Did go out to shop for a 4-year-old!  I have a gr.gr. niece having a birthday party this coming week -- so needed some fun stuff (Ollies).  I did purchase a new door mat for the porch for myself - bright and cheery for 4.99 as well!
  • Topped off the gas tank for month, when out - saved .10 gal. on purchase
  • Eating from home, except for one day.  Using what I have and eating leftovers in new ways
  • Did go out Friday to have lunch with grade school friends.  Went to the House of Tokyo - it was good and a different experience
  • Bought NO groceries again this week
  • Been moving lots of yard decor/yard art to different places - kind of redecorating w/o spending any money!  Also put out some of the gifts I got at Christmas for the yard.
  • Cleared out between garage and fence - old siding and bad lumber had been stacked for a while - all cleared out now
  • Trimmed the back shrubs
  • Took apart the air purifier/ionizer and cleaned it all
  • Aired the house a lot
  • Used air fryer and crockpot and not oven this week
  • Cleaning, and doing all the normal stuff
Meals this past week:
Pork loin, potatoes and carrots
Pozole
BBQ pork sandwich, fries and side salad
Chicken fingers and salad
Tostadas
Out to eat
Sloppy Joe and salad

Thursday, we had random downpour in the late afternoon and hail.  That was surprising.  Nothing big but is sure was noisy.  Friday, we had a lot of rain as well.  Looks to be more rain before April ends - it sure has been a wet month.  April showers bring May flowers!  Everything is so pretty around here.
How was your week?  Have you found any good deals this week?
Getting ready for planting/garden season?
Look forward to hearing what you are all up to!

I pray this coming week is beautiful for each of you and that you all stay safe and well and productive.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

Not that I complain of want; for I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content.  I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound; in any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and want.  I can do all things in him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:11-13

Dear Lord, our souls are thankful for another week on this earth.  Guide us each and every one to be thankful for everything we receive - whether big or small.  Guide to use what we have wisely and to help others to know how to use their time, money and goods as well.  Let our hearts be full of appreciation and love, and not of loathing or anger or resentment.   Prayers for a beautiful week for all.  AMEN

Cheap Meal Ideas & Using it Up!

Hello all.  Here we are on Thursday again.  Gosh, another week and it will be May, that sure doesn't seem possible.  Pretty much everything is green and pretty here, the weeds are growing - think, dandelion puff balls everywhere!!!!  I notice some of the neighbors are starting to put out flowers.  I plan on waiting a week or two - but I am chomping at the bit.
Some of our friends way up North had a lot of snow again this week!  That is just awful.  I know everyone is ready for the warmer temps.

Today, I wasn't sure to write about - but figured I would give a few ways I have used leftovers in the past few weeks, and some ideas for cheaper meals or meal supplements.  I do not have to have meat every meal, nor do I have to eat several items - I know that isn't for everyone.  There are a lot of 'single' folks here too - so maybe these ideas will help those who meal prep for one!

I mentioned one day about 'poor man's Swiss steak.  Mom used to make that, and I loved it.  I still do t for myself.  A nice burger, topped with a can of condensed vegetable soup (or homemade) and mashed potatoes.  Still tasty all these years later.
Now I took leftovers and turned it into a sort of 'cottage pie'.
I used one of those mini loaf pans - placed an extra burger in bottom, soup left on that, mashed potatoes left on that and topped with cheese.  Didn't even need to heat the oven, as I heated in the air fryer.  360* about 15 minutes - till the cheese was golden.  It really was yummy.  Same stuff - just a little different form!
I never thought about those little loa pans before - but I am thinking I will utilize them more now.  I have a bunch I keep for making sweet breads.

Deconstructed cabbage rolls!  I had leftover cabbage from a meal I made of fried cabbage - so did a skillet dinner.  Used some leftover taco meat, the cabbage, a partial jar of spaghetti sauce and one of salsa and threw in some rice.  Let it all cook up until the rice is tender.  Used things that needed using and had a great meal and some for the freezer.
French bread pizza is super easy and cheap.  I usually get a clearance loaf of bread ($1 or less) and just top with whatever I have in the fridge.  I always have some kind of sauce on hand.  You can literally top with anything.  Sometimes I make a quarter of a loaf, sometimes a half and sometimes a whole one.  Eat what you want and wrap and freeze the rest for another time.  Cost is pennies per meal.  Add a little side salad and you are set to go.
Grilled cheese and soup - good anytime of the year.  It can be any type of soup you have.  I always have extra soup, when I make homemade, so there is always some kind in the freezer if I chose something other than tomato soup.

Think anything wrapped in a tortilla!  It can be using leftover rice, beans, meat, cheese, sauce for a burrito or it can be whatever is left and using 2 tortillas and make a quesadilla.  Wrap chicken strips or fish or leftover steak strips - ham, turkey, cheese - whatever you have!!!  I have done veggie wraps as well on a hot summer day.  What veggies I have in strips, a little ranch dressing and roll it up = YUM.

Chili - the great re-invention!  Tops dogs or sausage with leftover chili.  Top a baked potato with it and some cheese or sour cream.  Chili fries.  Add to nachos.  I love chili and can eat it in any form.  I use it for many meals.
A baked potato can be topped with about anything you have leftover.  Throw on some cheese or sour cream and it is a meal!
Pasta salad.  It can be used for a meal - especially for a meal for one, when there is no one else to please.  I have done this often.  A favorite in the summer.  Check that crisper or the garden and use whatever veggies you have.  Add to cooked pasta and add the dressing of your choice.
In the summer I also make a lot of tomato, zucchini or cuke, onion salads with Italian style dressing.  Great way to use that fresh garden produce.  So refreshing.

I made a pork loin on Sunday, so I have lots of meat.  Froze much of it to use later - but made a fun soup for one.  I made pozole.  It is a soup I really like and have very seldom.  Pork pieces, a drained can of hominy, pork broth (from cooking meat), chopped onion, and a few chopped jalapenos.  NUM!
I even had about a quarter jar of salsa in the frig, so I threw that in too.
Just remember you can add whatever you want to things.  I am not a huge recipe type person.

You can use leftovers and make hand pies.  Leftover pie crust from baking or a frozen crust - works perfect for making hand pies. You could even use pizza dough.
Leftovers are great for making a stir fry or fried rice as well.  Super easy, cheap and tasty.

I love salads of every type.  Summer makes salads fun - as there are so many fresh options close at hand.

Lots of people make salmon patties - which are tasty.  But I tend to make tuna patties!  Small can of tuna, an egg, and some breadcrumbs, smashed chips/crackers whatever - form into patties and fry.  I usually get 2 per small can.  Much milder taste than salmon.  Cheaper too!!!!!!
Biscuits - all is good with biscuits.  Make egg/sausage biscuit sandwiches.  Biscuits and gravy.  Biscuits and jelly are even acceptable!!!

There are just so many options for eating up the leftovers or eating for an inexpensive price.  I know everyone talks about rising prices, but I really don't notice it much.  You know how I shop, I have a great stockpile of items, and I use it ALL up!  Waste nothing - get creative.

Eating for one or two can be daunting.  Just keep it simple and eat WHAT YOU LIKE!  You don't have to conform to what people think is normal - do you.
Seriously, if all you can do is sandwiches - that is ok.  Just look around the pantry and figure out some new options for sandwiches.  You can do lunchmeat, deli meat, egg salad or any type of meat salad.  You can use canned meats in those meat salads as well - heck you don't even have to cook.
Eat salads - if that is what you like, there are tons of ways to eat a salad.
Soup - you can make soup so easily with whatever you have on hand - or if you so choose - buy some version of canned.

You can eat good for a little bit of money - TRUST ME!  I do it all the time.
Get creative and use what you have and NEVER waste.  Re-create.
There are still many ways to eat cheap!

Have a wonderful day - this beautiful day.
You woke up - make the best of it!

Carpe' Diem

Hello to all.  Happy Wednesday - midweek is already here.  Hope this finds you all well.
It is a lovely sunny morning here today.  It is in the 50's, going into the 70's today.  Lots of dew around!  Birds are singing, and the squirrels are frolicking.  It is a very pretty morning.

YES IT IS!
Thus, the title to today's post.  Make each day count.
I say these things, as 6 years ago today, my life changed in an instant!  It was a day much like this one - very pretty.  A day with plans made of things to do.  Then it all changed.

I do not write this for "I'm sorry" or for you to feel sorry me.  I am OK.  I write this for YOU!!!
Many here know how an instant can change everything.  It isn't something I would wish on anyone - ever.   But it happens. It isn't easy.  It is very hard.  It is upsetting.  It sucks - but it happens.

Glen used to always tell me, that I would outlive him - as he had medical issues.  I never wanted to hear those things.  But that being said, we did over the years talk about the "what if's".  Our wishes, our thoughts and hopes.  We took care of lots of things early in life together - for the 'just in case'.
We woke that morning and neither of us had a clue, at least I know I didn't.  It was a normal morning. We woke up together, and I went to bed that night alone.  Life CHANGED forever.

You all need to make sure you tell people you love them.  It doesn't matter if they are a spouse, children, grands, or friends.  Live your life well.  Do things and enjoy.
Make the most of it.  Be someone and do things, that people will remember fondly one day. Be a good memory for someone!!!

It took me a good 4 years to break out of a shell I got in - seclusion!  I did things with family, but that was pretty much it.  Slowly I started getting out and reacquainting myself with old friends and even meeting some new ones.  I got to really know neighbors.  I tried to break out of my shell a bit.
I did know the whole time - that I needed to do good wherever I could.  I want to live a good life, one that would make Glen happy and proud.  I still fight with myself about doing things and going places, but I am trying.
I keep him alive always.  That one day was horrible, but that was ONE day.  I want to remember and pass on and share all the days I got to spend with him and love him and have fun with him.  The craziness, the jokes (never ending), the days we 'wondered' Indiana together, the days of camping, just the days filled with laughter and love.  I talk about him and share.  My family still talks about him often.
He was/is a huge part of my life, and yes, I am sad he isn't here - but what a gift I was that day I met him 1985!!!!!

So, whether it is someone or something - enjoy them every day.  Don't wait for a "special day".
Use your things!  If you aren't going to use your things - pass them to someone that might.
Enjoy each and every day you have with your people!!
Do things that would make them proud whether they are here or not.  I am trying.

Make this a WONDERFUL DAY!!!!!!
LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL

Little Things can Help a Lot!

Good morning all.  I hope this finds everyone well.  First, thank you for all the prayers for my gr. nephew.  He is doing well, and finally home.  Still not out of the woods completely, but if he follows the directions of doctors all should be good.  Again, thank you.

It is a beautiful morning here.  Very damp with a lot of dew.  Sun is shining and it will be warming up today - so all is good.  This week looks to be in the 70's most of the week.  Everything is green and pretty.
Easter turned out dry here - it was cloudy a lot, but it stayed dry.  Saturday was a total wash-out.

Today is Earth Day!
It should be something we think about every day.  There are just so many little things that we can do daily, that helps in so many ways.  This is our home - we need to take care of it as well as we can.
  • DON'T use chemicals outside!  Please DON'T.  They are damaging to birds and animals and they kill our bees.  We NEED those bees - they are needed for so many things to pollinate
  • Plant flowers for the bees
  • Keep a plant or two in the house - Plants help the air stay clean - very important
  • Be kind to nature.  Yes, some things are invasive - but it is all important for a reason.  Each thing on this earth is put here to take care of something else
  • Cut out chemicals in the HOUSE as well.  You don't need to be breathing in all that stuff.  Stop the chemical cleaners - try to make your own from natural things.  Be careful what you buy, clothes, furniture, rugs, etc. - many contain very dangerous chemicals.  I am sure you have all smelled that smell on new items - that isn't good - it is chemicals
  • Stop using plastic as much as possible.  Use glass for storage.  Take your own grocery bags to stores
  • Walk around and pick up any trash that you see in your neighborhood (or wherever you may be) - if we all do a little it will help so much
  • REDUCE, RECYCLE, REUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The best 3 R's ever
  • Conserve water.  Turn it off, fix those leaks.  Save rainwater if possible, for plants
  • Choose sustainable options of things.  Natural things that when used, can be regenerated by the earth.

Did you know these little -pain in the bum- whirlies are edible?  Yep, they are.  The bean inside is very edible.  They contain protein, fiber, and healthy fats.  Can be eaten raw or cooked.  Younger ones have a very mild flavor.  Animals love them - my squirrels sit and feast on them!  Use them on cereal or on top of salads.  Just a thought in case you are ever out or lost and need something to eat as well!
  • Many plants, leaves, 'weeds' and flowers are edible or usable in many ways.  Jellies can be made from lots of flowers and what may be considered weeds (dandelions, violets, clover).  Tinctures and salves can be made.  Teas.  Many leaves and flowers can even be eaten in salads or cooked
  • Walk more if possible - at least take less trips in your vehicles.
  • PLANT - weather it is trees, flowers, or veggies.  Grow things - it all helps the air and the soil and our bodies
  • Forage - this kind of goes with above - things that are edible.  You can often find berries, grapes, nuts, mushrooms, etc. growing out in nature and they can add to your pantry.  KNOW what you are getting - do the research.  You don't want things that can harm you
  • Turn things OFF - lights, heat, water, etc.  If you aren't using it - turn it off
  • Don't WASTE - try to use 100% of what you bring in your house in some way
  • Eat as natural as you can.  Less junk and processed food - means less health issues and it means less packaging and less spending of $.  If we all stopped that stuff - it really could make a difference.  If it doesn't sale - less will be made
There are so many little things that we can do on a daily basis to not only help the earth, but to help our bodies and to help our pocketbooks!  Just try to be a little more conscientious of things.
Get outside and just chill a little.  Enjoy all the beauty and the nature and sounds.  I know many of us get outside to work - but we also need to relax outside too.  ENJOY what we have.
Take care of things and they will help take care of you.

Have a beautiful day!

Weekly Wrap Up 4/20

Resurrection Day - Happy Easter to all.  May you all be blessed this day and every day!  I hope everyone takes a moment to count their blessings today.

We have a lovely morning here.  The sun is kind of shining - with some clouds.  It is in the 50's this morning.  Looks like some off and on rain maybe.  Yesterday was pretty much a wash out with rain.
I did enjoy watching the Robins yesterday.  They decided it was bath time - and they were lined up at the birdbath waiting their turn.  I had 6 or 7 lined up for about an hour - They sure did enjoy themselves.

I got a call early this morning that my Gr. Nephew is in the hospital.  He is a young man who was having fun with his friends yesterday on a day off from work.  He fell and hit his head and has a broken vertebrae and some fractures in his neck, and as of last night had bleeding in his head.  He is good spirits this morning and he was sent from southern IN to Methodist Hospital here in my city last evening.  The bleeding has stopped thank goodness.  Of course, my niece is up here with him.  I know God has him in His healing hands, but if you are so inclined, please say a prayer for KJ for complete healing.  Thank you.

My week:
  • Baked biscuits one day
  • Used leftovers in new ways and tried not to waste - some were frozen as well
  • I went out to clear our Pampas grass (3 plants).  Last fall I cut to about waist height - so I cut it way back and cleaned out all the dead stuff.    Must have stirred up something, as Licorice now thinks he needs to roll and roll around back there!  Also cleaned out and cut all wild stuff growing back there
  • Did my trash p/u walk
  • Moving lots of lumber and also moved a lot of my decorative rocks and fossil rocks around
  • Received a beautiful handmade card from Cookie!!!  THANK YOU
  • Did run out to get corn and finch feed at the feed store - resisted buying any plants yet!
  • Had a broken squirrel feeder - so fixed that
  • Mowed and trimmed the whole yard
  • Made almost a gallon of frozen 'fruit cream' (it is so good) - using fruit that needed used
  • Aired the house several days
  • Worked in the garage trying to clean and throw away some stuff - huge job
  • Paid everything I had here, except property taxes - which I received this week.  I will pay next week
  • Laundered all the warm cat bedding from outside - fresh and ready for next winter!
  • NO groceries at all
  • Just doing all the normal stuff and eating at home

Meals this past week:

Leftover rice/w beans added and biscuits
Egg salad on biscuits and fresh veggies
"Poor man's" Swiss steak and mashed pots
2 sausage/egg biscuits and fresh veggies
Individual 'cottage pie' - using leftovers
Taco salad
Loaded baked potato and side of Brussel sprouts
SNACKS: PB sandwich, popcorn, fruit cream, nuts, fruit

Just trying to get outside in shape - it is a big job and seems to be never ending.  So much to do.
How has your week been?  Have you been keeping busy outdoors or spring cleaning?  Any good deals?

I hope you are all safe and well.  I hope you all have a wonderful day today, no matter how you spend it.  I just hope we all take time to be thankful and prayerful of all that we have.
Wishing you all a wonderful and blessed week.
Blessing to you and yours from me at my humble little home.
******************

Dear Lord, we cannot offer enough thank You's for the gift that we have been given.  We have been given the gift of everlasting life.  May we each go forth and live our best lives possible and do good and thoughtful things for others.  May we protect this earth and all the wonders you have put before us.  It is hard to comprehend such a GIFT, but You gave it so we can all be forgiven of our transgressions and have an eternal life.  Thank You for each moment of each day.  AMEN

Easter and the Weekend

Hello all.  Hope this is finding you all well.  Here we are approaching the end to another week.  My goodness the time is just flying by.  May starts in 2 weeks!
It is a very nice morning here.  The birds are chirping and singing.  Everything is thriving and growing and greening.  Just about every tree has little leaves now or at least buds.  So much color - it always amazes me how many shades of green there is in this world!
I have my 'old lady farm jeans' on already - to work outside today!  You know those loose fitting old grungy jeans? LOL!   Tomorrow is supposed to get to 80*F as a weather front moves in.  Looks like a lot of rain and wind again (and some storms) for the weekend.  Prayers for everyone's safety.
Tomorrow is Good Friday.  I hope everyone takes some time to reflect on the love and sacrifice that was given to us many, many decades ago.  What love, to be willing to sacrifice your only Son for others, and to be willing to be sacrificed.  I cannot imagine - but I am sure grateful.
Sunday is Easter, and I hope most realize this isn't all about the gifts, candy and the bunny.  It is a glorious day of LIFE ever after!
Easter was the last holiday that Glen and I got to observe together on this earth - how fitting.  A few days later he started his life in heaven with our Lord.  LIFE ever after!  That gives me hope and contentment and faith in daily life.

Along the lines of our frugal living, please know you don't have to go out and spend a fortune to celebrate this day.  Homemade treats and even gifts can be made.  Your meal can be anything you like and have on hand.  It doesn't have to be a ham and all the fixin's - it can be anything.  If you like spaghetti - fix it.  It you want fish, roast, lasagna, grilled burgers or even pizza - fix it.
It is about being with your loved ones and reflecting on the love and life you have been given.

If you are not of a religious nature, take time to reflect on all the beauty that surrounds us each and every day.  All the wonders of nature, that we get to enjoy.  On just waking up each morning and getting to go out and do what you want or need.  Appreciate the beauty of the world.  Spend a day reflecting on positive and not negative.  Go forth and add a little beauty to the world.

Here is a list of many stores that have committed to closing on Easter Sunday, so employees have time to be with family.  I well imagine that there will be many others.  I hope so.
No matter what I may not have or may have forgotten, going out to shop on a holiday is not something I have ever done.  I believe holidays should be spent with family, and when I go into a shop, it tells that retailer it is OK to be open.
I applaud those that close.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend.  I hope you get to be with someone you love, and that you get time to reflect on all the gifts we are given in this big old world.
If you are getting nice weather, get out and enjoy it a bit.

Have a beautiful weekend.
Life is glorious!

Stocking - When Money is Tight

Good morning all.  It is a sunny and chilly morn here.  A little frosty, but not too bad.  Hoping for a pretty day.  It looks like we will have a soggy Easter weekend.
I am still 'mending' after Mondays yard work!  My legs are so sore - getting older is heck.

Let's talk today about stocking up for whatever may happen in life, when you are already short on money.  It can be done.  I keep seeing people say - when you are already strapped at your tightest, it isn't possible.  Well, it really is.
Remember the old saying "How do you eat an elephant?"  "One bite at a time"!  That is kind of how stocking is on a tight budget.
Lots of people don't want to admit, no matter how tight the budget, that little changes can be made.  People DO NOT like change.  They are comfortable in their habits and really don't like changing things up at all.
Can you free up $10 - $20 a month?  Bet you can.
Maybe a couple of lunches not purchased (take your own), or no snacks a few days or drinks out.  Look into to cutting back your cable program or internet service.  Drive less.  No non-essential shopping.  Keep any spare change you may have.  Keep that change and use it to stock.    Lessen power or water usage.  Itty bity, tiny changes do add up.  Save anywhere you can.

Now when you go to the store, buy essentials.  Not everyone knows how or does cook from scratch.  I understand that.  That is something else that takes time to get into.  That should be your goal - to use ingredients to make the foods you eat and like instead of a mix or box.  It will be healthier and cheaper - REALLY!
When you shop, buy 2 instead of one, of some things.  Look at the B1G1 deals - although those aren't often the deal many think they are.  Look for sale prices and clearance.  Think about going to a different type of store.  Maybe stop buying snacks or pop - then buy something nutritious.
When you buy that second item - put it back for a time when the budget is even tighter or an event happens that you can't shop.
You want things that are good for you - but the important thing MAY BE just having something.  As you get used to stocking - you will see the importance of things.
You can grow lettuce, tomatoes, radish, carrots, etc.  You can maybe fish or maybe hunt.  You can't grow flour or rice or sugar or salt.  You see where I am going?
You will start getting the things that are needed that you can't produce yourself.  You will start getting the hang of it.
Look for clearance and sales - THIS IS ESSENTIAL.  The jars of pasta above, are just for my daily use.  I have lots, and lots of pasta.  I have all shapes and sizes - I get super sales or clearance most often.  I try to keep all pasta in glass jars - it lasts for years truly!  Pasta is one thing I never pay full price for.  Rice is another.  I get it on deals whenever I can.
Both items are things that can stretch absolutely any meal for pennies.

See the jar of dehydrated mushrooms?  I have jars and jars of them.  Anytime I see mushrooms on clearance, I get them and slice and dehydrate.  To me they are one of the easiest things ever to dehydrate.  I keep in glass jars with moisture absorber added and they last and last.  A little hot water or broth and are like fresh sliced to use in cooking!  I use them often.
You can buy cheap frozen veggies (like mixed for soups) and dehydrate those as well.  It takes up so little room in your storage and frees your freezer up for bigger finds.  (you can dehydrate in an oven if no dehydrator)

Cooking from scratch if you don't now?  Ease into it.  Use different sites on the computer to find recipe sites - using what you have to make meals.  It may not be something you do every day, but you can do it now and then and start learning.
Did you know rice can be ground into flour?  Not so great for bread, but it can be used in pancakes and waffles.  Oats can be ground as well.

Start baking with simple items like biscuits.  They are about the easiest thing to make and it only costs pennies for a filling item.  Pancakes, waffles, are simple as well.  Learn to make gravy - it is a great extender.  Breakfasts of oatmeal and maybe some canned or frozen fruit - if you don't have fresh - sure beats the cost of breakfast out.
Drink water or make tea.  Stop the soda habit - that is so expensive for those without stable funds.

When you get a nice amount of 'regular' food whether canned or frozen - then you can start thinking about other things like powdered milk, baking supplies, etc.  Powdered milk can be handy in baking and cooking and even in a pinch when you need milk to drink!  Throw in a little cocoa if you need to.  Add to the 'ingredient' supplies.
Don't forget TP, shampoo, dish soap, laundry supplies, deodorant, etc.  Every now and then buy an extra.  Don't forget the pets.  It pays to have extras.   You never know what can happen in life to change your situation.

So, start taking notes on everything you spend money on - everything.  Look at the things you can stop spending on or cut back on.  Use those dollars, no matter how few they are to add some extra stock to your home.  It is your job to take care of your family - no one else's.
Start taking bites of the elephant!!!!!!
Soon you will see a nice stockpile and you will feel the comfort of knowing your family will be ok.

Start now.  Baby steps.  Learn and follow along with people that can give advice or help.  Make changes.
YES, you can stock even when you think the budget says different.
You got this - just get started.  It is addictive!!!!!

Have a wonderful day!!!!

Looking for Bargains - They are Still Around

Hello to all.  Happy Tuesday.  Hoping you are all well and safe.  It is cooler here this morning than yesterday for sure!  Yesterday was a lovely day - it got to 73* at my house.  I worked outside a lot yesterday, and boy can I feel it this morning.  LOL!  I did sleep well, as I was just plain old tired.
Today is going to be much cooler and windy again!  It started out sunny, now it is very cloudy and overcast.  The wind is nuts already!!!
Just a peek of my perennial bed.  It is really popping up.  Looks like there will be a lot of poppies this year!  They have burst out of the bed!

Well, as promised, and little about still finding bargains at the grocery.  I ran into Kroger Friday for just a couple of fresh items.  I wanted potatoes, radish, and mini peppers.  I went on Friday as well, so that whatever I purchased gave me 4X my points for gas. I got what I went in for.
Of course I walk the store, JUST IN CASE!

Milk was reduced to .98 a half gallon - dated 4/21.  Pretty darn cheap in my book.  Milk can be frozen too if you find a great deal.

I found this.  I really didn't need ground beef but figured I would add to the freezer.  This is 85/15 organic - 3 pack deal (3 lbs.) was 10.53 = 3.51 per pound.  They had regular 80/20 on sale for 3.99/lb.  I hate paying over $3 but, that is a thing now.  Once in a great while I will find cheaper, but not often.  I got 6 lbs. of this.  So, it will easily be 12+ meals (soups, casseroles).  If making a burger only, it would be it would make 24 meals for me. (1/4 lb. burger)
Pretty cheap protein.
Rice was 5 lbs. for 1.88 and lentils were ,67 lb.  Adding to my stock
I also got a 1 lb. canister of Coffee Mate (powder) on clearance for 1.68 (no pic).  I am not a coffee drinker, but it can be used in hot chocolate or in something that I need a dairy flavor in (mixed with water).  It is dated (sell by) 11/25 - but I will keep it in the freezer for long term use.

Bread was FREE - for stopping in the thrift store.  This is expensive bread.  Found a .50 new coloring book for a gr. niece.

There were so many things this week in the clearance section - but most were things I wouldn't use.

Kroger regularly has deals on meat.  Every time I have gone in during the past couple months there are deals.
It is a regular at my stores to have multi-packs of pork chops for $5 - it includes 10-12 chops.  Same with chicken legs and thighs.  I bought chicken legs a while back that had 14 huge legs in it, and it was on discount for 2.59.  Super deal.  They have also had fresh salmon, catfish and shrimp in the $5 packs.  Those are pretty darn good prices today.  You just have to pay attention and look around.  Deals can still be found.

We have a discount store that also provides many deals in all things.  They have things from yard equipment, clothes, toys, furniture and food.
Here is a look at a couple of their FB ads showing deals.  It changes up every week.  Some are great and I have purchased there before, and the produce is always good.
There is always a deal.  For anyone close to me this is Circle City Bargains on US 31 south, just north of Greenwood (they are on FB).  This is also where I got my mower and pressure washer.
If you click on the bottom picture, you can see the pricing better.

You just have to look for options and really look around the stores.  I recently saw someone post that Aldi had tomato soup for .29 can!  I saw an Aldi post on FB yesterday with small mushroom pizzas (frozen) having an unadvertised special for .49 each!!  Sign up to get advertisements or FB ads for your favorite stores.  Many send emails to you as well, if you choose.
I have never done any of the apps for groceries.  I do not have that type of phone - but I can sure find a deal by looking around!
************
Just a side note- I make my own dressing, and I use an old store-bought bottle to keep it in.  A couple weeks ago, my ranch looked empty, but I turned it upside down in the frig - and I got an additional 5 uses on side salads out of it!!  Empty doesn't really mean empty.  You can always add a bit of milk and shake it up to stretch.  Italian can add vinegar and/or a bit of oil to extend.
Of course, shampoo, dish soap and laundry soap - add water and shake.  You will be amazed how much is left and how well it works.  Cut things open like lotion and toothpaste - many more uses.

Just stop and think!!  There are lots of ways to extend your pantry and freezer and the items you have.  Use lentils with or to replace meat in soups and casseroles - they are the great extender!  Use less meat.  I can have meals with no meat and still get protein, and I get full.
Like my Coffee Mate buy - think about other uses than the normal one!

Deals are still out there.  It may not always be 'what you went in for', but maybe you can change up your idea of need.  Be open to going with the deals to help in the menus.  Be observant!!!  It can pay off big time.

Have a super day to all!

Weekly Wrap Up 4/13

Happy Sunday to all.  Happy Palm Sunday!  I hope this finds everyone well, safe and blessed.
It is a decent morning here.  In the 40's and a bit overcast.  Still kind of bright and it isn't raining!  It looks like this coming week will be very near seasonal temps for this time of the year.  That is good.
It is just getting so pretty out.  The grass is vivid green, all the trees are budding and leafing and the flowering trees are magnificent.
The birdies are singing this morning, Licorice has been fed, and the squirrels are scampering all around.  I always have finches, all year long, but the first "bright yellow" gold finches have shown up in the past couple days.  Oh goodness, they are pretty.  Bitsy is curled up next to me and being a cutey!  It is a great morning.

Just a lot of this and that this week!
  • Worked on getting the basement floor all dry - that took a couple days.  So happy to have a dehumidifier, shop vac and a fan - they helped a lot
  • Picked up lots of sticks after the storms
  • Had landscape timbers (8' - 4x4) actually float many feet from all the water in the yard out back!  Got those back where they should be.  They have never floated like that in all these years.  We had a lot of rain to say the least.
  • Spent a half day with sis.  That was fun
  • Dug out the front street storm drain (2 doors down).  It was packed with dirt, leaves and sweetgum balls and almost couldn't see it.  No wonder we had so much flooding on my street.  I dug it out and removed all the gunk.  It is free and clear now!
  • Got to air the house some on a few days
  • Recorded some very old classics to watch at a later date (from 40's)
  • Mowed front to back and trimmed everything
  • Did laundry and used dehumidifier water in the laundry
  • Cooking meals at home and using up leftovers in new ways
  • I did go to the store Friday to get a few fresh goods.  I found a bunch of really good clearance items and will share those on Tuesday.  Want to post about ways to still get deals!  Also got 4X points on Friday to help with gas later on.
  • Just doing all the normal things
Meals this past week:
Made a chili/cheese spread/dip and had with crusty bread - fresh veggies
Deconstructed cabbage roll skillet (used leftover fried cabbage)
Chili/cheese fries and a side salad - (leftover spread)
Chicken breast, fried corn and asparagus
Chicken/mushroom spaghetti, fresh veggies (leftover chicken)
Cheeseburger and fruit
Spicey rice, sausage, cherry toms

There you have it - just a lot of odds and ends.  How was your week?  Has everyone gotten things taken care of after all the storms?   We still have 18 counties under declared emergency!  There is still just so much flooding in the southern part of the state, as it is in many places.
What have you all been up to this week?  Any good deals?  I hope it is getting warmer for those in the great up north.

I hope you all have a lovely and safe and healthy week.  May your week be filled with blessings of all sorts.  Enjoy as the weather warms and sun and fresh air abound.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.
Psalms 51:10

Dear Lord, again we send up thanks for all the many, many blessings that we have received.  May we all try to live our best life and be kind and good to others.  May our words and deeds be kind to all.  Help us to improve ourselves each and every day and to improve our attitudes and reactions to others and to things we cannot control.  May we all exemplify the life Christ lived.  In His name we pray, AMEN

Words to End the Week

Hello all.  Hope you are all well.  It is a beautiful morning here.  The sun is shining, and it is warmer - about 40*.  Looks like it may get in the 50's today with NO rain!  Yesterday we had some rain, and in the afternoon, there were even some big old wet snowflakes in the mix.
The next few days should be nicer, with maybe a few showers over the weekend.  I hope to get out and mow at the end of the week again.  It sure needs it.

We all have setbacks in life, some bigger than others.  Stuff happens - but we just can't let it stop us and get us down too badly.  We pick up and continue to go forward.  We find a way.  We cannot change what HAS happened, but we can change our future.  That is one thing that we can all do - maybe in baby steps, maybe in big strides - but we work hard and go on.

I love this meme.  It is so true.  YOU have to take care of YOU!  When you take care of yourself, you are kind of taking care of those around you.  A happier you means a happier world around you!

Get up every day and do something!  Stay as physical as possible.  Clean, plant, do laundry, do yard work, walk, or just exercise a little - whatever you are able to do.  Got to take care of these bodies!

Mind your "head"!  Try to stay positive and not dwell on negative and bad thoughts.  Do not put negative out in the world.  Mind your thoughts and words - everyday!!!!  You CAN control that.  Only you can control that.  When you spread negativity, it touches everyone around you.  Sure, crap happens, but you can dwell on the positive instead of the negative.  It will change everything about you!

Finances - well, we do what we can.  We have big expenses happen, and that isn't easy.  We are here because we are frugal and thrifty people.  That is why I am frugal - so I can confront those spendy days/weeks.  If I mind my money today - it will HELP me tomorrow.  It may not solve the problem, but it can help!
I know it hurts, but not every day in life is perfect.  Sometimes we have to pull the belt tighter, simplify more, and learn new (old) ways.  I hear a lot of complaints about that, that it simplifies it all too much.  Well, I was raised to put in the work and get a positive return.  So, it is just a way of life for me.  Some need to look at things differently.  Quit making things harder than they have to be.

Blessings - count them every single day!!!!!  No matter what your day or week brings to you - it brings good and blessings as well.  It may be something simple as a kind word, or it may be a blessing of bill paid off, or a job offer, or an accident missed, or the beauty of nature.  EVERY single day is special.  Make sure you give thanks on a regular basis.  Be good and kind and watch it happen to you as well.  I am a huge believer in you reap what you sow.

Today is a new day - make it a good day.  As it states in the first meme, you can't change yesterday, no matter how badly you wish you could.  It is the past.  Today is all you can count on - and that is moment by moment.  No one knows how much time they have - so make it good while you can.  I sure don't want people to say "she sure was a negative Nelly on her last day".  I'd prefer they think of me in a kind way - because that means I made a nice impact on this world and/or them.

You control you.  Be the best you can be.  Physically, mentally and to the world.  Do not put bad energy out to the world or in your home.  Be the light that everyone needs.  Help keep your neighborhood a nice place.  Help your family and friends when they need a boost or a positive word.  Help a stranger once in a while.  Learn new ways to make your life a little simpler and easier.  Smile, laugh, enjoy!
Just do all you can do to be a better you.

I, like you, have had s**t happen in my life.  BIG s**t!!!!  It stinks.  But how I respond is everything.  I pull up my big girl panties, reset my thoughts, rest a little, then get busy and move forward.  Wallowing in the S isn't going to help me in anyway whatsoever.
I do understand much of what others go through - been there and done that.  That is the only reason I offer advice.

I send you off with prayers for a lovely day and a beautiful weekend.
Sending love to you all.

Midweek - Fun Foody Ideas

Howdy all.  Hoping this finds you all safe and healthy.  It is another very chilly morning here.  We are under a freeze warning until about 9AM.  It is partly sunny this morning, but we do expect some showers later on.  Oh fun - not!
This morning I noticed a tan and brown pigeon in the backyard.  My usual visitors are the basic black, gray and iridescent green ones.  This one was really quite pretty.  It is actually only the second times in years that I have seen a tan one in the wild.

Just a cute and fun idea.
I have come across some yummy recipes and ideas that I thought were fun sounding.  One took me back to junior high!  Hope you enjoy these.  As always click on the pictures to increase the size if needed.

From Eating Well on FB.  Homemade butterscotch sauce sounds like a fun addition to the holiday desserts!
From Eating Well.
This is the one that took me back to junior high.  We made a very similar item in home ec.  and called them 'popovers'.  I need to make these again soon.  I remember they were so good and fluffy.

Fun seasoning ideas without the salt.  So many think the only GOOD seasoning is salt!  You can come up with any number of seasonings and rubs yourself.  Fun to give some a try!

(From Quick Life Lessons)

You know I am a natural medicine/holistic believer.  I know there are many that take prescriptions for various things, and everyone does what is right for them.  I take nothing and sure hope I never have to.
I noticed so many of these listed bananas, oranges, nuts, grapes and grapefruit.  At least one or two of those are eaten by me EVERY single day.  I am a citrus fanatic, and I generally have bananas or grapes on hand and there is always some kind of nuts in my home.  I have also kept tart cherry juice or tart cherry capsules around always.  It really does help with aches and pains.  I am not a fan of avocado nor papaya - but pretty much have or have used all the rest.
The Lord has said He provided us with everything we need on this earth.  I do believe that.  Many medications today, were derived from natural things many years ago.  Native Americans have always followed the natural way as well.
I know it isn't for everyone, but I love it.
Just thought I would share.

You have any fun and easy recipes to share?  Do you use a lot of fruits and nuts in your life?
I'd love to hear your tips.

Have a fantastic day my friends!

Hippity Hop - Easter Will Soon be Here

Good morning all.  I sure hope all are safe and well.  The storms have moved Eastward, causing havoc all along the way.  Prayers for everyone in their line.  If you haven't already - please check in and let us know how you are faring!!!!!
It is cold this morning - go figure.  It is in the upper 20's!  It was 80 a few days ago.  Spring weather never ceases to amaze me.  The sun is shining, so that makes things feel better (if in mind only) to start the day.

Easter is less than 2 weeks away!  Hard to believe.  Many have family get-togethers and meals for the family, many celebrate the bunny events for the younger ones in the family, and then others strictly celebrate the reverence of the day.
Whatever way you plan to spend the day - here are a few ideas that maybe you can use.
A fun and natural way to color hard boiled eggs.  Using what you have on hand and no artificial dyes.  I think it is fun to mix and match.  Coloring is also a good way to store hardboiled eggs in the frig - just to know the difference between fresh and cooked!
Easter Smore packets!  Yeah, Peeps are not the best thing to eat, but the kiddos will surely think this is cute and fun.  Little baggies all ready to make the goodies. These can be used on Easter or kept for a later date!
Making special treats for the family to enjoy, is always fun.  You can decorate cakes, cookies, cupcakes, fruit - you name it.  It doesn't have to cost anything - you can make you own goodies and create fancy toppings.  Just a fun way to increase the fun for Easter or any occasion.

Fruit pizza is always a yummy dessert, and it is pretty too.  I have done this and used a giant sugar cookie (you can make whatever kind you like).  Top with a little cream cheese with a bit of sugar added - then fruit of any type.  Yummy and always a hit.

Maybe make a centerpiece from your yard!  Cut newly budding greenery, or flowering bushes or trees and make a lovely display for the table.

I know eggs are expensive - but I hope those that want, can color a few.  There are also plastic eggs that can be filled with treats and tiny offerings or even change.  You can usually get bags full of plastic ones at the thrift stores.  You can also make Jello eggs.
You can really get creative and color/paint rocks.  Rocks are fun to paint with pictures or sayings.  They look cute in flowerpots, gardens or even on windowsills!  Just something free and fun for the whole family to make.
There are many free printables on the computer to print out for the kiddos to color.

Use baskets, totes, boxes (decorated) that you have to make Easter baskets.  I had the same one (w/Mom) from the time I was little into adulthood!!!  I looked forward to it.
Buy little gems at the dollar stores - hair accessories, crayons, little cars/trucks, socks, balls, maybe a frisbee, nail polish, puzzles, etc. to fill the basket.

Get creative on your meal and use what you have.  Go through that freezer and the pantry and make a delish meal.  Seriously, there are no rules that say you have to have this or that.  Do what you want.  Make the foods that your family likes - whatever it is.  You can make a very special meal with what you have and maybe add a fun dessert.
Enjoy the family and celebrate the true reason for the day.

Just remember you don't have to fall into the 'holiday' traps of spending tons of money.  It can be fun and special for nothing.

Do you have any fun and frugal ideas for celebrating, especially for the kiddos?

Have a wonderful day to you all.
