Hello and welcome to the Sunday blog. I hope this finds everyone safe and healthy and hopefully DRY!
Wet is the word of the week in the mid-section of the states, north to south. Oh my goodness, what a week. First the storms and tornadoes - then flooding - catastrophic flooding. So many people have homes and businesses under water. The flooding is terrible.
We have had almost 6" if rain in the past couple days, and that is nothing compared to others south of here. Some have seen 8"+. Creeks are raging rivers. Rivers are roaring and 17'-20' over their banks, and yet to crest.
I have flooding in the back yard and a very wet basement floor, but that is nothing. I am dealing with that. The dehumidifier and fans are working overtime - I just can't imagine what others are dealing with. I sometimes feel overwhelmed that I have to face these things alone, but such is life. We grow and learn and survive.
The next couple nights are going to get cold again. We will be at or below freezing for a couple nights - yuck. I sure hope it doesn't damage fruit trees.
Just a reminder to all - do NOT drive through flooded roads!! So many have tried (even high vehicles) and have gotten stranded and some float away. Not only is it dangerous to you and your vehicle, but it is so wrong to put rescue personal at risk for something so stupid. Just don't - stay home if necessary.
There are violets, dandelions and tulips putting out color now. The grass is just vivid green. The Robins and grackles have sure been enjoying the soggy ground! Even seeing the bunny out and about. It sure is spring in this area. We get the good and the bad - it is all part of the season.
This week wasn't all that frugal - but necessary! That is why I do what I do the rest of the time. Makes life less painful!
- Kept more tough ends of asparagus for making soup at some point (and kept those heavy rubber bands)
- Got the taxes done. Yep, an expense - but all worked out wonderfully. I was more than pleased with results. The tax place is right across from the park - so got to enjoy just beautiful scenery as well. Oh, the trees are so pretty.
- I picked a small bouquet of tulips and hyacinths
- I did buy a new lawnmower. A NEED! I got a great price.
- Got to mow the yard before the rains started
- While out, I stopped at the hardware store and also purchased new string disks for the weed whacker. The first I have had to purchase since I got the whacker (got pack of 3 - will last for a few years). I also received a free bag of popped popcorn - that was good, as I was hungry! Got me home without stopping for something!
- Visited with sis for her 94th birthday! She is doing well. I did stop to buy her a pretty bouquet of flowers and some of her favorite Russell Stover sugar free chocolates. She was thrilled. Worth every penny!!!!
- Running the dehumidifier and fan downstairs - glad to have both. Will take the air filter/ionizer down there this week
- Using what I have on hand - no grocery shopping
- Doing all the normal stuff
Meals this past week:
Ham (freezer), mac n cheese, steamed asparagus
Smoked sausage (freezer) sandwich and small salad
Cup of lasagna soup (freezer) and fresh veggies and fruit
Beef and broccoli rice bowl
Fish tacos (soft)
Grilled ham & cheese, hardboiled egg and side salad
Fried cabbage w/bacon, and scrambled eggs
Well, how has your week been? I know several of you live within the storm areas we had earlier in the week, and many are in the flood zones as well. Please let us know how you are faring!!!!
Please know that I pray for all of you daily.
Also, did you get any deals this week? Doing spring cleaning? Cleaning up storm mess?
I pray that each and every one of you are safe and healthy. That you have not had to deal with big loss or damage. I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

Not that I complain of want; for I have learned, in whatever state I am; to be content. I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound; in any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and want. I can do all things in him who strengthens me.
Philippians 3:11-13
Dear Lord, we thank you for all that we have and for our family and friends. We ask for help and love for those going through so many struggles at this point in time. May we all remember that no matter what we feel we are enduring, there are so many who have far worse problems. Help us each to be grateful for what we DO have and help us to learn to be more content in all things. May we all be kind and caring in our words and actions, as they can affect others in ways we do not realize. AMEN
The worst of the storms stayed north of us, although the wind was unreal. Happy 94th Birthday to your sister. Sounds like you’ve had so much rain this week, I hope you dry out this week. Your meals sound delicious.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad - as I watched the weather - I could just see your area in the mix. Glad you did well.
DeleteThank you! She is an inspiration for sure.
We had tons of rain - still some spitting today! I am so fortunate compared to so many.
Thanks - just eating whatever sounds good to me!
Have a lovely week.
Spring & unsettled weather for some. Temps are finally in the teens (C) this past week & very little snow left. Crows are back. I'll look for crocuses later this week. Another sign of spring will be pussy willows. This was a week of appointments - mechanic, haircut, taxes, body work in the form of Bowen therapy. I want to be of service in my community so I gave rides to my cousin's partner 3x this week. Everyone needs a community to step up during bad times. I walked 9 mi this past week; my medicine. Another accomplishment this past week - I finally sewed an apron with the intention of doing more for gifting. In the kitchen: squash soup; baked trout w/ honey/garlic baste; dressed cauliflower; fish taco; rice pudding; carrot/pineapple muffins. I've started to make yogurt. Have a good week, Cheryl.
ReplyDeleteGlad things will be coming back to life around your area soon. Spring sure is an iffy time of the year.
DeleteSounds like you have a very busy week ahead. It is nice to help others and the community. Everyone should give back at least a little. That would be nice. Cool on the apron.
Your yummies all sound good.
Have a wonderful and safe week.
Great devotional Cheryl, very timely.
ReplyDeleteWe have had so much high wind, lots of limbs down but too soggy to spend much time to get them picked up. I believe the family is going to come help gather them at some drier time. I already have huge piles that need burned off. It will all happen eventually. So many people have it so much worse, I cannot imagine.
All meals at home, made burger buns, bread and cinnamon rolls.
Egg salad and roast beef hash were the stand out dishes this week.
I like to make egg salad and then when it is down to 1 serving add a can of tuna. Planted some lettuce and spinach in a huge pot, it was old seed and I am anxious for planting. Have also planted some kitchen scraps, pineapple tops, romaine lettuce bottoms, green onions and I have some date pits sprouting. While I know they won't get me dates, they make a great plant.
JC
Glad others will be coming to help when things dry out a bit. It sure has been some spring!! I cannot imagine either - just so much loss out there. I can be inconvenienced a bit - that isn't anything!
DeleteI love tuna and egg together in a salad. Roast beef hash sounds wonderful. Sounds like you are be resourceful with the kitchen scraps. Cool!
Have a lovely week.
Prayers for those in flooding and storms. Been there and it's no fun.
ReplyDeleteAm working on feeding the daffodil bulbs - spring is when I know where they are! :) So today in the drizzle I went out and fed the bulbs all along the path, the back fenceline, and DDiL's square flower bed from when she and my son were living in the garage apartment. Also some bulbs I'd scattered in the woods. I'm always hoping this will encourage blooms next spring. Most of my daffs are done for this year, but a few are late and still to come. :) Some clumps need separating this year & maybe I can do it this week while the ground is wet.
Good devotional, Cheryl. Blessings to you and your sis!
MaryB
So many people need those prayers.
DeleteMy daffies are done too - I love them - they are such a wake up from winter. They make one smile. Good idea to tend to them while you know where they are!
Thanks - you have a blessed week.
Excellent devotional! We all need to be thankful, not whinging on about what we don't have, what is going wrong, waa, waa, waa. "in whatever state I am in; to be content." We kvetched about being without power, but we had a roof over our heads, hot water due to a gas water heater, a generator to keep freezers and refrigerators going, a gas stove to cook, plenty of food, the weather wasn't too cold to call for a furnace, on and on and on I could list our blessings. Don't know if I told you but our neighbor's basement flooded because the sump pump didn't work. As a result of that issue, their generator wouldn't work. One of their daughters brought hers over so they could keep the food in the refrigerator cold.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right: be frugal so that you can buy that new mower (or whatever is needed). Some of the bigger ticket items wear out and it's nice to have the funds on hand to replace the old unit.
Not sure if I told you that the neighbor who owns the offending tree that landed on the power line, came over the help clean up the downed limbs that fell on our sheds. All in all, we had many blessings during the storm and afterwards.
Happy Birthday to your sister! I bet she did enjoy her flowers and candy treat.
Erin got a new job at Lowe's in Avon. She's looking forward to getting away from greasy food and late hours.
Catching up on laundry, cleaning and everything else that was put on hold. Enjoy your day, even though it is cool and gloomy. Sounds like a good reason to sit with Bits and read a book.
Thank you - you know I was thinking this morning, I am very content in this world and life and I have tremendous faith - that is what gets me through everything.
DeleteThank you for your testimonial - all you went through and to have so very many blessings. More people need to look at the world that way. There is always going to be something bad happening, so why not celebrate the good!
Glad it worked out for all around your area.
Yay, for Erin - hope she enjoys it. That is the first company I worked for years ago in accounting. I worked for them for several years.
Sunny or gloomy - everyday is a good day! Have fun getting caught up - amazing the things we take for granted.
Have a super week.
Hi Cheryl, love the Bible quote, thank you.
ReplyDeleteA quiet week for me. A medical test, all good there, and the rest of the week was a breeze after that ;). Had a busy week catching up with friends so didn’t need to cook much. Going to cook a whole chicken in an air fryer for the first time! We shall see how it goes ;). I loved baking a chicken in the oven but hated the mess, so maybe this will be better. My air fryer has dishwasher safe parts, wish me luck! Have a good week. Hilogene in Az
Glad all is well with the medical test! Sounds like a nice week with friends.
DeleteI haven't tried a whole chicken, please let us know how that goes. Sounds interesting. Hope it does well.
Have a great week.
I'm assuming you have an open basement, as if it were finished, a wet floor would be more problematic. Hope it is dried out soon!
ReplyDeleteWe're seeing slightly warmer temperatures, below freezing overnight and near or just over freezing during the day. The difference is the sun is warming up and the melting is becoming noticeable. Thank goodness.
Glad your sister had a good birthday, and you were able to visit.
Nope it does have an indoor/outdoor carpet on one area. My craft area is there and there is laundry room and storage as well. I am getting it dried - just takes a little time.
DeleteHey, it is going in the right direction for temps at least. The sun can sure change things up. Glad it will soon be acting like spring there.
Thanks - she is just such an awesome lady.
Have a good week.
I am happy that your sister and you got together for her birthday. So nice.
ReplyDeleteHope the basement dries out very soon.
God bless.
Thank you. We always have a nice time. The basement will be dry soon.
DeleteHave a great week.
So good to see you are safe! And now we both have new lawn mowers!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you. It sure did mow nicely. My old one was truly on 3 wheels and had seen its best days!
DeleteHave a good week.
My heart goes out to anyone having to deal with flooding. The damage it causes is horrendous.
ReplyDeleteA couple of highlights of my week were the blossoms opening on my plum tree (so pretty) and a kind lady giving my husband a lot of glass she didn't want to sell on his carboot stall. I was helping him clean it and I mentioned it to a neighbour who is going through a hard time at the moment. She asked if we had any hi-ball glasses we could sell to her. It was great to say yes, we did and that she could have them for free. This lady is always giving us baking and it was nice to be able to give her something for a change.
The flooding is just so horrible in so many places.
DeleteI hope you get no cold weather to hurt the blossoms. How neat on all the glass wear and being able to share that with another. I love the sharing and bartering I see.
Have a lovely week.
We had over 8 inches of rain here. SO much flooding in this area with a lot of roads closed. Thankfully no flooding at our house. Only in the Midwest does it go from 80 degrees with flooding and tornadoes to 35 degrees and frost.
ReplyDeleteGlad you didn't have major issues too. Enjoy your week!!
It is crazy. That old saying "just wait 5 minutes" is true. Gosh, the weather can change on a dime. We had 81 Friday - yep, then rain and wind and flooding - today high in the 40's. Had frost and fog overnight! Nutsy stuff.
DeleteHave a safe and great week.
Congrats! On your new lawnmower! Your chore will be much more pleasant. When I was young and dumb, I drove through a river town, through a flooded road to get to the bridge. Water came in around my feet. My little pinto pulled me through; but it was really God!!! I think about that from time to time and thank Him all over again!
ReplyDeleteThank you! It sure was nice using it last week.
DeleteOh water can sure be deadly. I think we may have all done that in our younger days - now I panic when I see water surrounding me - even if it isn't on the road! I have a powerful fear of it.
It doesn't take a lot of moving water to pull a vehicle off the road. Scary stuff. So glad you survived it!!!
Have a beautiful week.
Wow a sister that is 94 you got good genes girl!
ReplyDeleteI think so! She has lived longer than anyone in the family to our knowledge! Mom was almost 91 and grandpa was 90.
DeleteHave a great week.
