Kitchen Things to Remember

Hello there to all this Thursday.  I hope this finds you all well and safe. It is another very brisk morning here, a few little flurries coming down.  I am sure anticipating next week, if the weather predictions are right.  There will be a lot of melting, if it true!
Seems we are now getting the cloudy days we should have had in January.  We are moving closer and closer to Spring, so that is a good thing.
Color is our friend!  Fruits and veggies have so many beneficial vitamins and minerals.  They help us stay healthy and strong, and they are just so tasty.  I am a fan of all the colors, and I sure try to get some of at least one color every day.  EAT your colors!!!!!

Don't throw these items away - they last and last.  If you keep things dry and sealed, you can expect to keep them for ages.  I know, as dried beans get pretty old - they can take forever to cook - but they are still good.  I always presoak during a day, then rinse and soak in a pre-cook water, then let them set over night.  Cook as usual.  I have never had a problem doing it that way.  Just takes a little planning.  I have also presoaked for several hours, drained and then frozen - they cook easier that way. (breakdown is quicker)
I buy soy sauce (well, liquid Aminos) by the gallon and just refill the small container.  It lasts and lasts with no refrigeration.  I get vinegar whenever I find a great price.  Same with sugar - I keep it in old popcorn tins until ready to fill the canister.  I have had the same box of cornstarch for years.  I probably have enough pink Himalayan salt to last the remainder of my years.  If honey crystalizes- just set the bottle in warm water to liquify again.
Just because something has a date listed doesn't always mean a thing.  Do your own investigation - so many things last for years.
Salt has been under the earth for forever, and suddenly it is supposed to be used by a certain date!!!!  LOL
Keep things dry and sealed and you are good to go.

Measurements you might need to know.  Maybe you are without a measuring cup for some reason - here is a chart for equivalent on tablespoons and teaspoons.  This is a good thing to have inside the cabinet door!  I keep several little charts taped inside my cabinets.  They are super handy and never lost!

There you go - todays kitchen lesson!  LOL
I love learning new things and sharing ideas.

With things costing more in some areas, and us all needing to be good stewards and truly use up what we have (and not waste), little tips like these are good to know.

Have a fantastic day and a lovely weekend.

  1. One cannot have too many kitchen or nutrition tips! We try to eat the rainbow when we plan meals. The Farmer found a package of sirloin steaks from the markdown at Meijer in the freezer. Usually sirloin are not the most tender but should be good with marination. Found a recipe for a garlic mushroom sauce to dress them up a bit. The specials and markdowns we have found in the past are skimpy these days. Neither one of us like to pay full fare for anything.

Gloomy today but we are that much closer to spring. Sure hope the weatherman knows what he is talking about regarding warmer temps this coming week. I tell the Farmer that we will complain when it is hot, too. ha!

    Enjoy your weekend...be safe.

    1. It is always nice to find those hidden secrets in the freezer. I rarely pay full price for anything - except maybe cat food. I have just gotten used to deals!
I sure hope they are right as well. I really am ready for warmer days and NO snow!
      Thanks - you too.

  2. I am not a fan of our current POTUS (to say the least) but I give him a lot of credit for calling Savannah Guthrie and offering any law enforcement help to find her mom. I understand that he posted this on social media, too. Thank you.

Cheryl, did you realize that recently you posted these same two charts on food colors and how long foods last? Probably worth repeating. I eat a lot of colors each day, probably not as much yellow but all the others. Barbara M.

    1. I sure hope she is found - not feeling positive about it at this point.
I did not realize - thank you. I often forget - usually I try to check - but after so many posts things kind of get mixed up. Hopefully someone new saw them today!

  6. Thank you for sharing the measurement chart. I will make a copy of that as I am sure it will come in useful.

  7. I have a similar measurement chart that has been very handy. I like this one better. A little more detail. I'll print this one out and swap it for the other. It will go inside the cabinet door above the counter where I prepped foods.
