Weekly Wrap-Up 9/29

Sunday again, and the end of yet another month.  I surely hope this finds you all safe and well.  Oh what a few days it has been weatherwise.  My heart breaks for all the destruction and death that has taken place.  It is just beyond comprehension.  The pictures are just horrible.
It has been such a widespread event as well.  Places that you would never think of hurricane damage.

I had a ton of limbs down in the backyard.  They have now been stacked up.  Pieces of leaves cover everything - houses, cars, roofs, streets, etc.  We had 68 mph winds at one point, and it was sort of scary.  My little spot in this world is wonderful, so please know I am not complaining.  I just can't fathom what the folks in the worst areas felt/feel.  Such extreme sadness.

Our family event was cancelled because of rain - hoping for next Saturday.  Much of everything was cancelled Friday evening around here, Saturday was just rain.
Bitsy was even scared.  He ran from window to window and door to door, then hid under the covers for a while on Friday.  Blackie could not have cared less!

This week was just odds and ends.
  • Used the crockpot and the air fryer when I could
  • Used leftovers in new ways - made Mex. chicken and ate 3X this week in different ways and froze enough for 3-4 more meals
  • HARVEST - tomatoes and squash.  My pepper plants are growing and budding and setting new fruit.  It is amazing
  • Hard boiled eggs for snacks
  • Cut up and froze lots of produce.  Couple quarts of each celery and bell peppers.  More tomatoes to use later
  • Washed my car at home with rain barrel water
  • I did deadhead the big flower bed out back.  The New England asters have started blooming now.  The wind and rains have laid them down - but they are covered in blooms and bees and butterflies.  Funny, here it is autumn, and the clematis is blooming again, as well as D'Oro lilies and even the dandelions!
  • I walked the perimeter of the house looking for any tiny cracks.  Any cracks or tiny spaces around pipes, lines or vents was stuffed with steel wool to prevent pests!
  • Made zucchini brownies
  • I tried the power washer - glad I didn't do much!  Now a lot more to clean off
  • Did go out for grocery deals.  Eggs were 18/1.99.  Potatoes 5lb. 1.88.  Seedless grapes .99 lb.  I also found 3 lbs. of sweet onions on clearance.  Perfect size - like tennis ball size.
  • Filled the gas tank on Blazer and got a .40/gal. discount
  • I stopped at the church thrift store while out.  I got 4 packs of hot chocolate mixes for $2 each for baskets.  Dates are way out in the future.  They carry lots of food items that get donated there.  Many are free.

Meals this past week:
Mexican chicken and mashed potatoes
Veggie fritters and salad.  Fritters were mashed pots, shredded zucc., cabbage and carrots
Chicken enchiladas & sliced toms
Smothered fries
Tortilla pizza
Grilled tuna patty melt and baked beans
Chili and crackers

Chili sure tasted good - it hit the spot.  Made a smaller batch but will probably eat today as well.  I have been craving comfort food.
How was your week?  Did you get any deals?  Still getting produce from the gardens?
If you are in any of the affected areas of stormy weather - please check in as you can!!!!!  I pray each and every one is safe.

Again, just hoping all are safe.  Life sure throws some curves and some are just catastrophic.  It just seems so sad - nature is a very powerful force we cannot beat, sadly.  Hugs and prayers.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

Lord, help us each to spread kindness and good to others.  There is currently much hate and division in the world.  Please help all to understand that it is the devil feeding this, and that it will serve no good purpose.  Help us all to hold our tongues and pray for those who are offensive and rude.  Prayers for all in the path of the storms.

Big Brother and the Deal of the Week

How is everyone this Thursday?  I hope you are all safe and well.  Prayers for all those in the path of the hurricane.  Heck, we will even receive weather tomorrow from this event.  I hope everyone that needed to leave has, or that you have a safe shelter.

It sure feels like fall this morning.  It is a bit chilly outside.  Nothing bad - just cooler than normal.  I have been out and fed the neighbor's cat, the birdies and the squirrels.  Living room windows open and Bits is running from window to window to see Licorice!  Big boy, Blackie, has set in the window for a while, now is on the couch with me, snoozing.  Oh the life!
It sure can be.  I know sometimes the events in life aren't - but if it weren't for change, we wouldn't have seasons, we wouldn't grow, and life would be pretty dull.

I keep being amazed at how 'big brother' is watching us!  I truly don't know why it amazes me, but it does.  Now just to point out, I do not have a 'smart' phone - it is an old type flip phone - and I do not have a 'smart' TV.  My TV is many years old.  Of course, we all know the computer monitors everything, even when they say it doesn't.  IT DOES!

Last week when I was talking to my niece, we were discussing how her daughter is interested in building a tiny home.  Suddenly I am getting tons of pop ups on my news page for tiny homes!
I looked up Jack rabbits the other day - now there are articles all over my news about rabbits!  Shoot, even the local news did a story this morning!
Just to show how fast it works - yesterday we talked about goody baskets for the holidays - and what showed up yesterday afternoon - an ad for buying already filled gift baskets - custom orders!
I just find it incredibly creepy.
They don't even hide the fact that they spy on our every move.

I guess the thing I so often wonder about is how I can just be sitting here thinking of something - not say anything out loud or look it up, and BOOM, there is an ad or article.  Now that is creepy!

We all like our store cards for getting deals and digital coupons, but it is another way to monitor what we buy.  CC's the same thing.  I often get 'customized' coupon offers from Kroger for items I have purchased over and over.  Yep, they keep track.
I guess the only way around that is to not get deals with a store card and pay cash.  UGH! (not sure if that would even work).

Speaking of deals.  If you have Kroger or an affiliate - this is the week for eggs!  1.99/18 count large eggs.  Limit 5 cartons.  I ran in yesterday morning to get mine.  I was afraid they would run out early - so I went on the first day early.  They actually had several displays, and they had a lot of them!
So, you might want to check your fliers.  That is a great deal now days.  Eggs have gotten so pricey again.  I plan on freezing some of mine - so I will be good until probably the end of the year.

Just another tip for the grocery!  Every time I go - even though I don't mention it - I buy canned tuna or chicken.  YEP, I generally get 4-6 cans each time.  Now I don't go to the store every week - but I get this when I do go.  I just feel comfortable having this protein on hand, and having it be shelf stable.  It sure would come in handy in a pinch.  If I have a lot and it is getting close to date - I can donate - but both last for a long, long time.
Also, it could be used for pet food as well.   I just like having shelf stable meat on hand.

Well, it looks like a lot of rain and wind tomorrow.  I know it is nothing compared to what others are getting.  STAY SAFE
Saturday I will be attending a family fall event - chili/hotdog day.  We get together every fall for this.  We also celebrate my nephew's birthday.
Not sure what I have in store today - but I bet I keep busy with something.

Hope you are all safe and have a great weekend.  I know we have one vacation gal leaving for a cruise this weekend - hope the storms don't affect it!  Have fun.
Hope you all get to do something fun this weekend.

Have a great one!

90 days and the Countdown is on!

Morning to all.  Hope you are all safe and well.  Hoping for safety for all those in the south and southeast.  It is a cloudy morning here today - cooler as well.  We did get rain yesterday - a bit.  It has been kind of a quiet week for me so far.

Yep, I was talking about seeing a Christmas commercial the other day and stores displaying Christmas goods already.  But guess what?  It is 90 days from today!  That will be gone in a flash.
I know some people are buying - some are even done.  Belinda mentioned the other day about maybe making up gift baskets for her nieces this year.  I told her to go back and look at old posts - any year from October on.
Just a few suggestions to get you going now - if that is what you want to do.  I have found everyone in my family loves the gift goody bags and expects them.  I love getting them too.

Start looking for containers for your gifts.
If making mixes - start keeping nice jars.  No need to give away expensive canning jars.  Smaller jars are great for spice mixes as well.
Also keep those containers that produce comes in - they make great containers for mixes, or cookies or candies, etc.

Any type of basket will work.  You can save or hunt baskets - think yard sales or thrift stores.  Use boxes you have received stuff in (cut open one side) - then wrap in paper or contact paper or fabric.  Use containers of any sort.  Small waste baskets, wicker, totes, plastic containers, strainers, large mixing bowls, backpacks, milkcrates, you name it - you can use it.  It is like a gift within a gift.

Decide on a theme if you so desire.  Is it a cooking theme?  Spaghetti night, pizza night, movie night, game night, personal items, kitchen items, etc.
There are so many options.
I tend to gift adults home canned goods - jelly, salsa, relishes, etc. and items that they may not buy themselves.  My sis loves canned salmon but doesn't buy it often - I include it.  My brother loves Spam - it is always in gift.   I have a nephew who loves Cheese-Its, always has a couple boxes, a niece who can't get enough dill pickles - guess what goes in her basket?
Sour candies, chocolate, cookies, snacks, card games, trinkets, specialty items, etc.  Whatever they like.

I make jar mixes too - they are always a hit.  Soup mixes are always a hit - a quick fix for a busy night.  I make up some brownie or cookie mixes - a nice treat for a cold day.
I like to make up my own kind of trail mixes.  Just about anything fun to eat!

I know it seems early but seeing that first commercial really got my mind a going!  Time this summer has flown by - so we can expect the next 3 months to be gone in a flash.  It is nice to go out and accumulate things and ideas early - so you can just relax and enjoy when the holidays get here.
There are always options of gift cards as well.  Maybe a meal out, or a grocery card.  Who doesn't need free groceries????? (cards are easy to mail as well).

Anyhow, get your minds busy and thinking.  Start looking for containers.  You can get for free or pennies.  Start looking for those goody bag stuffers.  I find a lot of odd ball stuff at dollar stores and on clearance for pennies on the dollar.
As we move through time, I will give a lot of ideas of things that can be gifted.

Have fun.  It is fun to put together and fun to receive.  Step out of the traditional gift giving mode!

Have a super great day my friends.

We Do What We Can

Howdy to all.  Hope all are safe and well.  I know many are in the path of storms and bad weather and I hope you stay safe and have no damage.  There are places in the European countries that are getting tons of rain as well and are flooding terribly.  I hope none of you or your families are involved in that.  Stay safe.

We finally got rain yesterday and last night.  More coming today - it is so needed and appreciated.
I saw something yesterday morning that really surprised me.  I even looked it up to make sure of what I was seeing.  I have had rabbits before, but yesterday there was a white-tailed jack rabbit in the yard!  No mistaking it, it was very long, and had huge long ears and was fast like the wind!  That was new for me.
Did you know a jack rabbit is a hare not really a rabbit.  There is a difference!  I didn't know that until yesterday.

Boy, this is true.  If we are just happy with what we DO have, life can be so much better.  We all don't live in McMansions (nor want to), we don't have millions, we don't all have the best - but we sure can just be grateful for what we do have and love it.  Many in this world would be so grateful for what you have.
It is all perspective.  It truly is.  If you live where you have some peace and are not confronting war daily - be grateful.  If you have some semblance of freedom - be grateful.  If you have a roof, food, and clean water - be grateful.
Much is taken for granted today - and it shouldn't be.
Again - a huge truth.
We cannot control much in this world, but we can control our little spot we call home and our little lives in ways, that we don't often realize.
You can't control inflation and the financial world - but you can control HOW you spend your pennies.  Be selective in what you buy, look for the best prices, make good choices.  You can control what you nourish your body with.  You can control your little home front.
Spend wisely.  Use less.  Waste nothing.  Recycle all you can.  MAKE GOOD DECISIONS!

Control the things you can - and stop fretting over the rest.  The world is going to put some harsh things in your way at times - how you react is in your control.
Sad things happen, bad things happen and always will - but that is life.  You make your way through it the best way you can.  Try to be positive and do the right things ALWAYS.  You are then adding a little goodness back into the world.

All we can do is our best.  Try and try again.  Keep moving forward.  IF you need help - reach out.  Whether it be physical or mental health - there is someone out there that can be a gift to you.  If you need help with finances or goods - there is help for that as well.

Hopefully, we offer a tiny spot of hope and sunshine here.  Everyone is so helpful and tries to offer ideas and advise, and hopefully a little love.
Little things can mean big things to others.  Be that kindness.

Have a blessed day my friends.

Weekly Wrap-Up 9/22

Happy Sunday to all.  Today is officially the first day of fall here in the northern hemisphere!  Summer held on for all its might around here.  We set record highs yesterday.  This coming week should be in the 70's all week.  Rain - hopefully!  Maybe some today and chances the next couple days.  Boy, do we need it.
Leaves are falling - not because of fall - but from the dry.  They aren't pretty, just dead.  The grass is brown, but the weeds keep growing.

I have officially seen my Christmas commercial on TV!  It was an ad for Disney World - but it was all Christmas.  I had to run into Big Lots this week, and they have Christmas items out for sale.  Good grief.

My frugal week:
  • I mowed everything - not because grass needed it, but the spindly weeds!
  • Cut all the peony plants to the ground.  I always wait until they are completely dead - putting all goodness back into the earth.  They are down and gone for now
  • Put a new tarp over the greenhouse (had it on hand)
  • Had the house generator fully serviced this week - not cheap.  It sure did need it, and I got a new battery in it as well.  All is good to go.
  • I received a very big refund check this week, not really expecting (YAY) - helps offset my spendy month!
  • Got all leaves cleaned from deck (where greenhouse is), from flowerbed out back by house and one down the side of garage.  Really looked great (until they started falling again!)  sigh!
  • Filled the hummy feeders for probably last time.  They were all crazy a flutter for a week and a half - then went to nothing.  I think they have left.  Makes me sad
  • Made iced tea
  • I took a nice walk around the neighborhood one day
  • Done lots of laundry
  • Cleaning and cleaning some more
  • Ran to Kroger on Friday - got 4X points that day for gas.  Got milk - 1.39 half gal., Cider - 1.99 half gal.  Those are both why I went - but also found a nice pack of chicken breast fillets on clearance for 2.25.  (spent very little there)
  • Stopped at Big Lots (1 block from Kroger) and got some birdseed, instead of running to feed store.
  • HARVEST - tomatoes (ripening slowing a little), there are lots of green ones still, and zucchini & yellow squash
  • Just doing all the normal stuff - meals from home, using what I have, and enjoying fresh goodies
Meals this past week:
BLT and salad
Sausage patty & egg on a bun, 2 mini pancakes from freezer
Taco salad
Skillet veggies (squash, peppers, onion) w/smoked sausage and sliced toms
Tuna salad over lettuce - tomatoes, cukes & crackers
Jalapeno cheeseburger and salad
Fish fillet, fried corn and sliced toms & cuke

That is about it for my week.  The dog days of summer hang on - though we are getting a bit of a break this week.  I look forward to less humidity.
How was your week?  Let us know.  Are your gardens still going - are you still canning/freezing?  Did you get any deals this week?
I think we are all ready for a bit less heat and humidity.
PLEASE check in and at least say hello!  Missing so many of you.

I hope you all have a great week ahead.  Stay safe and healthy.  Enjoy each and every day in the best ways you can!
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home

My Mind is Drifting to Fall

Good morning.  Today is another lovely morning.  Even though today and tomorrow are supposed to get to 90*F and get more humid, I am thinking all things fall.  I think many of us are.  It is a beautiful time of the year - and the tastes and scents of fall are yummy.

It is apple time.  Cider and apples are just fun - and this time of the year is when they can both be had at the peak of flavor.
I like a variety of apples, but I do believe my favorites to just eat, are Fuji, Gala, and Braeburn.  I like a tart/sweet combo and a crunchy apple.
So many to pick from!

I love scents of fall.  Here is an option for a natural scent to use in your melt burners.  I can think of a lot of other options of herbs and spices to add as well.
You can also just place a pan of water on the stove on low - with apple or citrus peels, maybe a dash of cinnamon or clove and simmer.  The house will smell soooooo good.

I do believe I will be making some of these this weekend.  I will use regular milk - since I don't have almond milk.  May change out 1/2 tsp. of the vanilla for almond extract.  I love getting a fix for a sweet tooth, and not having the extra calories of sugar!  Pretty darn natural.
*Don't like raisins? - you could maybe add dried cranberries or other fruit or chopped nuts or even chocolate chips!

And to end things up - here is just a good meme to remind us to be our best ALWAYS.  Listen, help, donate, smile, hug, just be a good person!  Words to live by.

I wish you all a great remainder to your week.  Have a lovely weekend.
Be positive, do good and have a good time.
Have a super wonderful day!

Mistakes - We all Make Them

Happy midweek!  We are now over halfway through the month, and less than 100 days until Christmas!  Just thought I would throw this out there.  LOL!
The moon sure was something to see last night and this morning!  Bright and full - and a cool morning - seems like fall!  Temps are still pretty warm after reaching the mid-mark each day.  Not changing anytime soon.  Sunday will be officially fall, but summer isn't letting go anytime soon around here.  I sure wish for rain!

Yes indeed.  I can guarantee you, there is not one person here that hasn't made a mistake (or 2 or 3+) in their life.  I know I have made many.  You don't always get things right the first time, and to me mistakes mean you are living and trying.  Not every test gets an A every time - you have to study and to try.
To those who are just beginning this journey, just know it is normal to mess up!  Sometimes many, many times - before you get it right.
It is frustrating, yes!  But you keep on trying and you keep moving forward and you will eventually get it right.
The above statement is one of the biggest reasons people fail.  Credit, can be nice to get you through a rough patch or to make a purchase of a big item - but it can get you in trouble.
Many people think of credit as - "I don't have to pay for it"!!!
YOU DO have to pay for it.  Minimum payments get you nowhere!  They just add to the debt and over time get you deeper in debt.
Lots of people buy things they would never spend cash on.  They buy a lot of wants, not needs.
YES, I know many do not carry cash and use cards for everything - but these people pay off the debt each and every month!!  This is important.  I use mine too now and then for bigger purchases.  I do pay it each month 100%, I don't pay interest or late fees.  I get points I can use to get free items or gift cards.
For the majority of what I buy, I use cash.  I am old school and will go down fighting for cash! (I don't even own a debit card).

Buying sale items or clearance with a card, then making minimum payments - gets you nowhere at all.  You will end up spending way more on those items than they were worth at regular price.  Just DON'T do that!

The old saying, "Take care of your pennies, and your pennies will take care of you" is so very true.
Be mindful and don't do silly things just to impress others.
Remember the huge difference between WANTS and NEEDS.

Just remember mistakes mean you are trying and living.  LEARN from those mistakes and then CHANGE your behavior.  That change can make your life so much more comfortable and easier.

Have a wonderful day everyone!

Meals, Mending and Icky Buggers

Happy Tuesday all.  Hope this finds you all well and safe this morning.  It is another cool morn here, and it is lovely.  Looks to be warmer all week, but with no humidity!  YAY! We sure need rain - not sure any will come this week.
Yesterday was a busy day here around the homestead, got all kinds of things done, before it just got a little too warm for me.  I got to talk with a niece last night and that was enjoyable.  It had been a while.

Let's talk about a couple things I mentioned in the wrap-up post.  Just ways I save a bit of change around here.  I like things that are simple - so here we go.

I mentioned a couple of the simple meals I had.  One meal was leftover day.
I had a big helping of 'garden' veggies left, baby potatoes and a bit of taco meat w/beans.  It became a meal.  I know it looks like a lot of food for one - but remember that it is my one meal I eat a day, other than that, it is an occasional snack.  Also, it is loaded with veggies.  Threw the meat over the baby potatoes.  The veggies were just sauteed together - all from the garden with a bit of cheese on top.  It was filling, pretty healthy and yummy.  And the best part - nothing wasted!  The veggies are pretty too!
Jalapeno popper zucchini bites!  I used a small/medium zucchini and cut into chunks.  Barely cooked, then added the cheese mix.  It was a bit of sour cream, cream cheese, cheddar shredded and diced jalapenos.  Let it all simmer together.  I topped with a few bacon bits.  It was so good, and no need for the oven.
I loved how the cheese got crisp/browned around the edges.

A cute patch for my jeans.  Long ago I had a denim shirt that just wore out - it had embroidered flowers on it, so I cut those out and saved.  Well, I used one to patch the small hole.  I used Liquid Stitch, for the mending process (I love that stuff).  Super easy and kind of cute!

Now let us talk icky buggers!  Stink bugs!!!  Oh, how I loathe those things.  They are not only ugly, but they are everywhere right now.  It seems everywhere you look outside they are there.  They sneak in at every opportunity as well.  And yes, they do stink if you try to pick them up or smash them.
They have what looks like a coat of armor to start with, then add the stink - and you have a nasty bugger.
They even try to hitch a ride on humans when you go outside.  I have brought in a couple of them.  They climb on the window screens outside and drive the Bitsy nuts!
They really are pretty creepy looking.  Not sure what their purpose is on this earth, but I guess they must have one!

Have you had any simple yet yummy meals lately?  I just love it when things come together, and you can have a yummy meal for pennies!  I so enjoy eating all the great items that come from the garden.
I think 'maybe' today will be a chef salad - not sure yet.  That does sound good - throw a bit of cheese and summer sausage on top (or tuna) and I can have a meal for pennies!
There are always ways to get an inexpensive meal.  Don't waste and be willing to get creative!

Well, that is it for this morning - I am expecting a service person to show up sometime this morning, so won't linger.
I wish you all a super lovely and productive day!
DO SOMETHING CREATIVE TODAY!

Weekly Wrap-Up 9/15

Happy Sunday to all.  Hope this finds you well and safe.  Golly, here we are half-way through another month!  It just does not seem possible.  The days are flying by.
It is another wonderful morning here.  Nice and cool.  The days are warmer again and look to stay that way for at least another week.  We are to be mid 80'sF all week.  No rain in sight - we sure do need it.

If you enlarge this pic, you can see the bees.  Live forever (sedum) is in full bloom.  Last evening I walked out and looked at the ones just in front of the house and counted 12 big bumble bees, lots of honeybees, a Monarch, and lots of little butterflies.  I also have these all down the side of the house - it sure gives the bees and butterflies something to enjoy in the fall.

My frugal week:
  • I had a meeting with my finance guy this week - all good
  • HARVEST - toms, zucchini, yellow squash, 1 pepper, and rhubarb
  • Did my fall maintenance on the generator - and decided to have a full maintenance session done - called and set for Tuesday this coming week
  • Cut my hair at home - been holding off, trying to let it grow.  Just didn't like it!
  • Patched a pair of jeans
  • I did it again!!!  Spent some money.  Been talking about it all summer and finally did it.  I bought a power washer!  I got it at the fairly new discount store I have close by.  I paid at least $100 LESS than retail according to my research.  YAY me.  I also got a new pair of jeans for $10 (heck GW cost 7.99 for used), bunch of celery $1, and raisin/cinnamon English muffins for .85 pack/6.
Good brand and really great price!
  • Was cleaning out closet and found a brand-new set of sheets at the top and back of closet, I had forgotten about!  Laundered and they are on the bed now
  • Mowed - not that the grass needed it - but the spindly weeds.  It is dry and the grass really isn't growing
  • CLEANED and cleaned some more.  Really working on getting everything all cleaned for fall
  • No grocery store
  • Just doing all the normal stuff
  • Processing tomatoes - some went in the freezer for now.  Gifted many to neighbors
  • My neighbor gifted me 8 packaged meals they receive every month.  He has celiac (or something like it) and gets 32 frozen meals every month from his insurance or something.  They didn't have room for all of them - so gifted me some.  Breakfast and lunch/dinner entrees.  Nice to have on hand for something quick.

My meals this past week:
Leftover day - cleaned out and ate what was in frig
Fried chicken, mac n cheese and sliced toms
Fried chicken, leftover mac, sliced cukes and toms
Spicey grilled cheese, leftover ravioli from freezer
'Jalapeno popper' style zucchini bites and salad
Beans and rice and salad
Chicken/beans/rice supreme burritos
SNACKS, fruit, toms and/or salad, crackers and cheese

That's about it for me.  I have enjoyed the cool mornings and open the windows for about half the day (kitties like that too).  Mornings are the time to do things outdoors.
How has your week been?  What have you been up to or buying this week?  Any good deals?
Check in and let us know how you are - missing some of you!!!

I wish you all a wonderful week ahead - stay safe and healthy and productive.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

Doing Anything Different?

Happy Thursday all.  A nice cool and sunny morning here.  Looks to be the hottest of the week later on today.  That is OK - it sure beats snow!!   LOL

I am curious about how many have changed their shopping strategies lately.  I know there is inflation and many places practice price gouging, even though they won't admit it.  Prices are up all around - so I am just curious what you all might be doing differently.
I haven't changed much in my house.  I have always been a pretty prudent shopper.  I plan easy and simple meals.  I have always worked at buying clearance, sale and coupon items.
Even though there is only me, I still buy as if there were 2 - and add to the pantry and the freezer.  I make meals pretty much the same size (things like chili, soup, etc.) and then freeze some future meals.
With me I follow the old adage "if it aint broke, don't fix it".  This works for me.
WHAT works for you?

I like to keep lots of basics on hand.  Rice, dried beans/lentils/peas, pasta of all types, potatoes, and then I add in whatever else I may want.  I tend to go to the store to get their digital deal for fruit!  That is usually the only fruit I get - unless I find some in the .99 bin.
Take advantage of digital coupons if you can - they can give you some good deals.  As I always say, shop the clearance bins and manager markdowns when possible.
Freeze or can things you can't eat right now.

Dry goods - can get you by in some tough times.  It is generally cheaper than fresh and can be stored for long periods of time.
Learn some very simple recipes - or do as I do.  Just make it up as you go!  That is kind of the story of my life.
Being just me, I can eat whatever I want for meal - it doesn't have to include meat or even be nutritious!  But a basic grilled cheese or a peanut butter sandwich can provide nutrition, and they are filling.
I understand with others to feed, you may need to be more careful.  You can still cut costs if you look and are willing to try new things.
Learn to make your own mixes for things - whether it be for cooking or for seasoning.

I don't buy junk food (hardly ever).  I make my own drinks at home or have water.  I just keep it simple, thus I haven't changed the way I shop much at all.

I am just curious if others have changed how they shop or how often.
How often might be my one change.  I used to go weekly, whether I 'needed to' or not.  Now I only go if there is something I really want to get or that I need.  As far as need - I am usually stocked well enough to not run out.

Give us a shout out and tell how your shopping might have changed.  I am sure sharing your methods and ideas will help someone else.  We all need new ideas.

Have a lovely day and a fun weekend.
Take care.

Change - the One Thing That we can Count on

Good morning to all.  Here we are on Wednesday - mid-week again.  It is a lovely morning here.  Looks like it will be getting warmer from today on.  At least the humidity hasn't been bad.

A somber morning for most people.  Remembering the horror of 23 years ago, is almost too much.  That was for sure the day the world changed forever.
I wish those things hadn't happened, and that those families were still intact.  THAT was one of those days, that I remember the entire day - that we were talking about yesterday. 💔

The one constant in this world is CHANGE!  It is basically guaranteed in every aspect of life.
Much change is hard to handle, and we don't always understand it.  Regardless, it happens.  It may be your finances, your personal life, your home, life and death, health, your community and YES the world.
Change can be beautiful IF we learn along the way.  We truly need to learn.  Nothing ever stays the same.
As much as we would like to, we can't go back in time.  BUT we do get second and sometimes third and fourth chances.
We have all had those moments in time when money was tight, and we weren't sure what to do.  Well, kiddos, we put on our grown-up panties and go forward and just try and try again.
We can start again and make the ending of our life a different story.

When you think you can't tighten the budget any more - sit down and write every single thing (ALL) you spend money on.  I mean every penny!  That pack of gum, that coffee, that lunch out, that junk food you buy, the cable bill - everything.
You will most always see where you can CHANGE some things and stop spending on them.
If you need to, get help!  Everyone needs a hand up now and then.  You can seek help with utilities, you can go to food banks, you can maybe find things to sell, you can maybe get a part time job.......
Do something.  There are good people out there, that can help.
Once you have received some help, you have stopped spending on anything unnecessary, you can start getting your finances in order and heading upwards.

Life is full of challenges; it always will be.  We just have to have a mindset that we want to improve.
Whether it is improving your life or TRYING to improve the world in some little way.  If we all did a small, kind, and loving thing each day - what a difference that would make.

You can do it.  Make improvements, small or large, and move forward and upward.
Change is tough - but it is inevitable.

Have a blessed day my friends.
Spread a little love today and every day!

Moments and Memories

Good morning all.  Hope this finds you all well.  It is a lovely morn here again.  Cool and bright.  It will start getting warmer today through the week.  Summer isn't done with us yet.  Tomatoes slowed during this cool, but I imagine more to ripen over the week.

Today is just a little thing about the moments in our lives that we remember and the memories we make.  I believe in making as many good memories as possible - with family and friends.  Your children, grands and even nieces and nephews will remember someday, and maybe smile.  That is what it is all about.  Share the memories you have and make new ones.  YOUR future depends on it!  As those memories are shared in the future, you will live on.
The meme is generally true.  There are some days that are relived and remembered often - unfortunately they may not be the 'good' kind.  I think many of us remember almost every moment of our worst days - when we lost someone.  I know I do.
But other than that, we remember moments.  We often remember an event, a gift, a meal, a view, etc.  Odds are we do not remember the entire day it happened, just those fun things.

Yesterday I spent a couple hours on the porch with a neighbor and one thing led to another.  I remembered a lot of things and told stories, and she did as well.  I think it made our afternoon, sharing just some fun memories.

One thing I got to thinking about last evening was my mom's cooking.  I am getting into the mood for comfort food, and I remember so many of the yummy goodies she would make.
Her stew, biscuits, great baked goods, meat pie, stuffed peppers, roast and veggies, the best homemade noodles ever, etc.  I do not remember the day around those, but boy do I miss her cooking and her meals.
I do have her recipes on many things - but no matter how tasty they are - they don't match the memories.
I think we all do that.  Our memories can far exceed the actuality!  Our way of compensating, I think.
BUT, saying that - we need to pass those things on.  Write down those recipes and share them.

I remember a gift or two that stood out growing up, like getting my bike, but I do not remember the entire day.  Just the moment of seeing that bike.
I remember getting asked for my hand in marriage, but I don't remember the whole day - just that crazy impulsive moment!
I remember our wedding well (as small as it was), but I worked that day - and that is what I remember of the day leading up to the wedding!  I also remember it was very snowy!
MOMENTS

Write down memories of childhood, teen years, young married years - someday those stories will be all that is left.  I am glad mom did that - we do have those stories to pass on.  It really is pretty cool.
I think this blog, is kind of my story to leave.  I have shared so much over the years - and odds are it will be 'out there' for many years to come.  That is kind of cool.  I guess I still need to do something else, more permanent as well.
I want the memories I leave, to be fun and happy as much as possible.  I don't want people to be saddened by them - I want them to remember the good moments and times.  I want to bring a smile!

Write out those recipes, those stories and such - to leave for the future.
Always talk about those that are gone before us.  That way a part of them lives on every day.
Laugh, cry, share, and above all REMEMBER the fun times.
Make new memories for younger folks to have, and someday when they get older, they will be telling their grands as well.

Now is a good time to think about writing down those family recipes.  What a wonderful holiday gift that would be!  Pass on some of those heirlooms that are just stashed away.  Let someone else enjoy them.  Use your 'good' stuff - I mean what are you saving it for?  Use it, love it, and make memories.

Hope you all have a beautiful day today.
Smile and be happy!

Weekly Wrap Up 9/8

Happy Sunday to all.  Hope this finds everyone well and safe.
It is a chilly morn here, 48*F when I got up.  Today looks to be lovely.  Never fear the warmth will return this week, with highs in the mid to upper 80's again.  Yes, we have gotten a taste of fall, but summer isn't done yet.
I actually turned off the ceiling fans and put on socks this weekend, for the first time in months!  LOL

Enjoying the refreshing air.  The hummingbirds are so silly and cute.  I love hearing their little squeaky chirps and they are so funny to watch.  They dive bomb each other and chase each other.  They have been drinking a lot - it will be departure time soon, I imagine.
The gold finches are so lovely to listen to.  They are loving the echinacea out front - the plants look funky now, but the birds are enjoying the flowers, so I will not take down yet.  Their songs are so sweet.  There were 3 pairs out there the other day, while I was sitting on the porch.
                                                        SMILE and enjoy your day!
 My frugal week:
  • Mowed and trimmed everything the first of week - it sure needed it
  • HARVEST - zucchini, yellow squash, peppers, tomatoes
  • Have done a lot of weed pulling
  • I did empty 3 of the last accordion files of old paperwork - took to the shredder event first thing Saturday
  • Processing lots of tomatoes
  • I did a spendy this week!  I was so frustrated with my old regular vacuum - it is several years old and not working great - so I bought a new one!!!!   You who have gotten to know me - know this was a big thing - I hate spending lots of money on stuff!
Yep, I spent some bucks - but boy does this thing suck - IN A GOOD WAY!  I couldn't believe what it picked up.  Easy to use, rotating head, adjustable suction, and easy clean.
  • Been going through the kitchen freezer and using up things that have been in there a while and just stuck away.
  • Working on the cleaning of house - 1 room done, and another one partly
  • I was going to go to the grocery for fruit - and FINALLY the bananas I was gifted week before started ripening and also another neighbor gifted me 12 big apples from the orchard!  No need to go to the store - now I have fresh fruit to eat.
  • Cut a lot of basil and have it drying
  • Chopped and froze lots and lots of peppers for various uses later on
  • While out Saturday for the shred, I stopped by library and dropped off library books in deposit drop (they weren't open yet).
Meals this past week:
BBQ pork chops, corn on cob, sliced toms
Seasoned chicken breast filet, fried cabbage, sliced toms
Fried zucchini and fried green tomatoes - num!
Super cheeseburger and salad
Italian seasoned chicken breast, roasted mini potatoes
Sautéed fresh veggies over rice
Beef & bean nachos
SNACKS: fresh fruit, banana milk shake, tomatoes

That's about it for me. Today will be all the leftovers from this past week for my dinner!
How has your week been?  Did you get a cool down for a bit as well?  It has been dry here all week, could use some rain again.  I have also watered with rainwater when needed.  Have you gotten rain for your plants?
What kind of deals have you gotten this week?
Love hearing from you all.

I hope you all stay safe and well this week.  Prayers for those in need of healing.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble home.
***************

Make me to know thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.  Lead me in thy truth, and teach me, for thou art the God of my salvation; for thee I wait all the day long.
Psalms 25:4-5

Lord, again we come in thanksgiving for all our many blessings received this past week.  Continue to be with us and guide us all in Your ways.  May we each learn a little more this week about loving one another.  Help all those in need of healing, both spiritual and physical.  Amen

Some Excuses for Being Broke

Good morning all.  Hope you are all well.  It is another cool morning here, but we will warm up today.  Looks like we will get a taste of fall over the weekend, then back to normal the first of the week.  I did have to turn the AC on for a bit yesterday afternoon, but it got turned off quickly.  Love this kind of weather.

You all know people who are always broke.  Sure, it may be lack of job or lack of good pay for a job.  Illness happens sometimes, and that affects funds.  There are many legit reasons to be broke.  Emergencies happen.  Been there and done that!  But I got it in gear and turned things around.  I stopped and realized, much of it was me.

People don't like to admit that OR they are just blind to it many times.
  • Buying spendy stuff - high end coffees, nails, expensive haircuts, going out to eat all the time, fancy clothes brand new, magazines, etc.  Many just don't get that these things can be done so much cheaper - and huge savings can be had
  • The excuse "I was poor as a kid" - so therefore they deserve nice things.  Well, many of us were poor as kiddos, and still live within our means.  One doesn't mean the other
  • Being accustomed to having it all - and think that is a must!  Spoiled.  Maybe someone had rich parents and think they continue to 'deserve' the good life even as an adult on their own.  That is something you EARN - it isn't a given.
  • Immediate gratification - that is a huge thing today.  Maybe something will make you happy today, but in a bit of time - that too shall fade.  You are just more in debt and don't care about the thing you purchased
  • It's CREDIT - I don't have to worry about it.  Some people just never figure out that credit IS money!!!!!  I challenge those people to spend only cash on things and see how quickly they change their tune!
  • Knowing you can't afford it - but want to fit in.  Well, let me tell you, if you lose friends because you quit spending money you don't have - you haven't lost much.  REAL friends will never expect you to do that!
  • Keeping up with the Jones's.  It sure isn't worth it at all.  In the end, no one cares!  You can try to keep up with family, friends, neighbors, etc. - but it sure won't make you any happier - and odds are everyone already knows you can't afford it.
  • Impulse shopping.  This is huge.  Some people just can't say NO.  If that is you - stay home and stay offline!!!!!  Put yourself on a mandatory NO buy.  Stuff truly doesn't equate to happiness.
  • "I deserve it".  WHY?  I have never understood that.  I saw a You Tuber the other day justifying spending a huge amount of money, because they deserved it, and the kiddos should experience it.  Sorry, that isn't valid.  This same person was telling about using the food bank right before that statement.  If you can't buy your own food, then NO you don't deserve that big extravagance.  There is nothing in this world that we 'deserve', just because....... We need to earn it, work hard for it, and truly appreciate it when we do get it.  Don't do anything on the shirt-tails of others.
Remember you can JUSTIFY anything, but that doesn't make it right.
Being broke is not fun.  Dodging bill collectors is not a way to live.  Always being worried about how to pay for things is stressful.
LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS!!!  That means you make XX amount of dollars and spend less than that!

You can turn things around if you desire.  It does take work - yes, that isn't always fun - but in the end you will be so much better off.
You got this.

Have a great day and enjoy yourself on a budget!

Mid-Week Musings

Howdy-ho to all!  Another beautiful morning here in the neighborhood.  I sure am loving this weather.  I am one of those people that would love this all year long!!
The sun is shining, the air is cool, the birdies are singing and so far, all seems right in my little world.

This is me to a T!!!!!  When I saw this, I had to save it.  I know many may not feel this way - but I figure as long as I have enough, and I am comfortable - that is all I need.  I mean, no matter how much you have - you can't take it with you when you leave this earth - so in my opinion, more than enough is kind of a waste!
I have food and lodging.  I have a vehicle to get me around.  I have family and friends.  I have my health.  That is all I need.
I hope you are learning 'less is more' as well.  Life need not be complicated to be good.  A simple, less materialistic life can be wonderful.

Here is a good chart of things that will be available this month.  It is amazing how nature has a time for everything.  I love that all the apples will be coming in, in the near future.  I love some good apples.  My grapes are now done in this area.
My mouth drools when I see all these goodies.  So much yumminess to be had.  The farm markets will be bursting at the seams.  I wish I lived where there were roadside stands.  I remember when we camped, we always passed many stands, and the fresh items were always much cheaper than the markets.  We used to get so many good items.
Keep your eyes open and get things while the getting is good.
My neighbor caught me out in the yard Monday, and I was in the garden with my basket.  His comment was "picking your groceries for the week?".  Yes indeed.  I sure do love all the produce.

Here is another good chart to use, while we are all thinking about stocking up.  Those dates marked on the food items you by are merely suggestions.  They are not etched in stone.  "Best by" is not EXPIRED!!!  I wish that word was not even in the English language!
It never used to be that grocery items had dates on them.  I know as a child they did not.
The manufacturers aren't stupid - it sure is a good ploy to get people to throw away perfectly good stuff and buy new. (oh, I know people that do that too!)
Dry beans will last forever as stated, just know they may take a lot longer to cook the older they get.  They are still good; they just take longer.
Just know your things are good longer than they say!

Just a bit of this and that today.
I hope you are getting good weather and that those that have gardens are getting lots of lovely produce.
Stay well and productive today and be blessed in every way!

Happy Wednesday!

Ambitions for a New Month

Hello to all.  Hope you all had a great weekend.  Yesterday was a perfect weather day here.  Just glorious.  Many times, I looked up, and not a cloud in the sky - just lovely blue.  It is a cool morning, the birds are singing, windows open.  The AC has been off for over 24 hours!
Blackie has assumed the 'position' after having breakfast, and Bits is well, being Bits!!!  He sure makes me laugh.
I am again all messed up with my days!!  Yesterday everybody in the neighborhood was home - so it seemed like Sunday.  Today should be trash day - but no it is delayed a day.  It just messes with my head.

I have plans for this month!  Things I want to accomplish.  I don't usually plan a lot of things - as I am a "we will see what happens" kind of person.  I am alone now, so there is no real time frame I have to follow.  If things get done, they do.  If not - well, they don't.

Yep, this is what I plan on doing a lot of.  I have a paper shred event to go to on Saturday - I think it is the last one of the summer/year.  I still have a lot of old paperwork that will soon be gone!

I plan on continuing the harvest and canning and preserving.  Don't want to waste a precious fresh goody.  Much of the canning I do is also for holiday gifts.  People would be disappointed if they didn't get certain things!
I have plans to finish the blankie I am making for my great niece from baby clothes.  NO, it isn't done.  I have not worked on it much at all this summer.

My big goal is to clean the entire house - one bite at a time!
I have plans to work on one room at a time until I get it done.  Truly each room, should not take that much time.  My house is not big, but I do have a lot of stuff!  I want to do a thorough clean and dust of everything.  It may be one room a week or one a day - just depends on how I feel with other stuff that is going on.

Sure I dust and vacuum regularly - but we all know there is that stuff that we just ignore.  My shelves in the living room are one!  They have lots of stuff on them, and well, I just don't like moving it all (I do like looking at it).  I want corners, and unders and behinds all clean.  From ceiling to the far corners.
YEP.  Sounds ambitious even to me - LOL.

But I figured it was time to make a few plans.  I can get very complacent if I do not have structure or a plan.  It is time to get 'er done!

Do you have any plans for this new month?  Any ambitions, goals, vacations, plans on budgets, etc.?
Hopefully we can all give each other encouragement to do the plans we have in mind.

Enjoy your day.
Busy hands accomplish much!

Weekly Wrap Up 9/1

Happy September to all!  Happy Labor Day weekend as well.
I hope this finds everyone healthy and safe.
It is a beautiful morning here.  Nice and cool this morning.  It appears that the heat and humidity bubble finally broke here for a while.  Looking forward to some days without that awful humidity.
I know those that work get a long holiday weekend - so enjoy that.  For me, they are all the same.

We got a lot of rain on Thursday evening and again Friday night.  Had some boomers on Friday night and wind!  Yesterday was cloudy a good part of the day - all good.
The rental next door is getting new people.  They are the ones I showed the house to last weekend.  A family.  They have been moving small things in for a couple days.  Not staying there yet, but I am sure soon.
Boy, I tell you cleaning out the flower bed closest to the house out front the week before, sure made my walk to the basement different!  I removed all the ivy and vines from in front of the glass block window there - and my goodness, it is bright walking down the steps now!  Wonderful!

My frugal week:
  • HARVEST - grapes, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, basil
  • Refilled many containers with things I had in stock.
  • Finally cleaned & organized the deep pantry (my store!)
  • Started my fall/winter stock up.  Got mainly non-perishables.  Lots of TP, Stevia, disinfect wipes, cat treats.  Got Ritz crackers on a good sale.   Cheese, corn on cob, melon & fruit
  • I also got a gnat 'trapper'.  After talking about that early in the week on here, I received a coupon from Kroger for $5 off a Zevo trap in an email. (tell me they don't 'listen' to conversations!!)  Well, it works great.
  • Paid everything I had on hand
  • Did a root touch-up at home
  • While out - filled gas tank - got .40 off per gallon w/discount
  • Gave myself a 'spa' night at home
  • Neighbor brought over 2 huge bunches of bananas.  Still pretty green.  His work was delivered tons more than ordered and the driver wouldn't take them back.  So, they gave them away and he gave me a bunch (17 big bananas)
  • I went out Friday and had lunch with the friends from grade school.  Always such a nice outing and so much catching up with each other.  We celebrate monthly birthdays as well.
  • While out - I left early and went to the cemetery.  Glen, mom & daddy, and brother.  Decorated graves with silk flowers I had.
  • I also bought chances on a queen size quilt one of my childhood friends help make.  I saw pictures and it is beautiful.  Spent $20 on that
  • Made more hummingbird nectar and refilled everything
  • Been working on canning salsa
  • Just doing all the normal stuff
Meals this past week:
Hard shell tacos and a banana milkshake
Zucchini/pepper/onion/chicken skillet over rice & cukes and tomatoes
Frittata using the leftover veg/chicken skillet, sliced tomatoes
Tuna patty, fried corn/zucchini, tomatoes
Tamales over rice
Out to lunch - Baja fish tacos (Arni's)
Smoked sausage sandwich, leftover fried corn/zucchini and sliced tomatoes

Not a lot to report or exciting, just a normal kind of week (except no yardwork!).  How was your week?  You do any canning or freezing of goodies?  Any deals this week?
Everyone finally started coming out of the woodwork yesterday as it was cooling some outdoors, so lots of catching up with neighbors!

Just a reminder for everyone - starting a new month - if you failed some during last month - this is a NEW start for you.  You can take a "do-over"!  There is always a way to start again.  Don't fret.

Hope you all have a wonderful week ahead.  Stay safe and healthy.  I hope those that have events for the holiday enjoy their time with family and friends.
Blessings to you and yours from my humble little home.
****************

And let us not grow weary in well-doing; for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart.  So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
Galatians 6:9-10

Dear Lord, we thank You for this glorious week.  Help us each to keep the faith and promote Your word.  There is much strife in this world today - please help us to lend a kind word and ideal instead of negative.  We pray for those who are losing faith for various reasons.  May their health and lives turn around.  We give all glory to You.  Amen
