My Thoughts to End/Start Months

Hello to all.  Last day of October!  Happy Halloween if you celebrate.  Tomorrow, we start another new month, only 2 left this year!  A short few weeks it will be Thanksgiving here in the US.  Life is flying by.
This morning is quite warm to start the day - upper 60's.  Rain, glorious rain - we get some today!  It has been an exceptionally dry month - so we end the month with some much-needed precipitation!

I have been thinking so much about all those that were affected by the storms at the first part of the month.  There are wildfires happening all around as well - and big winds.  There is flooding happening in many places around the globe. It is all so scary and so sad.
Truth!  No one gets to the end of life and wants to say - I hope I left them guessing about how I feel.  Tell people NOW!  Let those you love and care for know how you feel.  If nothing else, be the shoulder they need.  There comes a time in life that we all need a shoulder.  When we are young, we think we have all the time in the world.  Well, let me tell you - those years seem to fly by and then you are in your later season of life.  DO things now, say things now, be there now - it is so important on both sides!

I think about all those this past month that have lost family members and friends to these horrible storms.  I think about those that lost all their possessions - homes included.  Many are now sleeping in tents as cooler/cold weather will be approaching.  Many do not have electricity yet or water.  We have gals here in our group that have gone through so much and it still continues to a degree.  I am sure there are group members that we don't know about yet, going through devastating loss.
If you are of the persuasion - PLEASE pray for them all - for all folks going through such horrible stuff.

We sure can use more love in this world - more kind deeds - more kind words.
Be the positive influence in your family, neighborhood, office, etc.  Be kind and pass on kindness. It is infectious!!!
Stop and think, as we start November, all the things that you are thankful for - big or small.

Thanks for being here and being a friend not only to me, but to others.  I love this group - you have all helped me in ways that you will never understand or know.

Have a wonderful day - stay safe - and BE KIND!

PS - THANK YOU to Cindy and to Laurie!!!!!!! You know!

Some Fun Food (and drink) for the Holidays/Winter!

Happy midweek to all.  It is a warmer morning here.  The house was 73* this morning when I got up - all from the heat it accumulated yesterday.  Yesterday set big records here.  It was the warmest for that date in 74 years!  The house warmed up - but with the windows open it was comfortable.  It was extremely windy yesterday!  Today is supposed to be warmer as well.

Isn't that pretty?  I would love to take a walk down that track.  You can almost smell the leaves and nature.

I like fun food, especially at the holidays.  Things that maybe we wouldn't have or do at other times!  I like eating and drinking them and I like gifting them.
This sounds very refreshing and holiday like!  I think this would be great for a holiday brunch.  I do believe even the kiddos would love it.
I think if one wanted to be 'festive' a shot of rum or vodka per glass might be good as well!!
Hmmmm - even something like a Malibu rum!

FLAVORED BUTTER!  Have you ever made flavored butter for the holidays or special dinners?
You can add anything you want to softened butter.  Soften the butter, add the ingredients desired and knead it in.  The form a roll and wrap in wax paper or parchment paper to store.
You can add bacon bits, cheese, garlic or onion powder or dehydrated, any herbs - like rosemary, thyme, basil, etc.  It is great on warm bread or rolls or just for spreading on crackers with a bowl of chili or stew!  Buy your butter when advertised on specials during the holiday months.  I have already been seeing it for 2.50 and less per pound.  You could also make your own butter pretty easily with heavy cream.
Have fun with it.  It is so tasty.

APPLE BUTTER
Click on recipe to enlarge.
I am doing this for part of the gift baskets this year!  So easy - put in the crockpot and let it do the work.  I will be canning in 1/2 pint jars and processing to make it shelf stable.
I think this will be a fun addition.
I may play with adjusting the sugar a bit (using less), we will see.

Just a couple fun things to maybe add to the menu this year.  I think it is fun to try new things.
ENJOY!!

Have a super day - enjoy these last days of October.

The Countdown is On! (in many ways)

Happy Tuesday!  How is everyone this new day?  I hope well and safe.  This month has flown by and here we are at the end of it.  Gosh, hard to believe Friday is November.  Here is the U.S. Thanksgiving will be here before you know it, then BOOM Christmas!
It is a warmer morning here today.  In the 60's already and going to 80* today!!  They say windy but very warm.

The time change falls BACK this weekend.  UGH!  I hate it!  Yay, it gets dark at 4PM or 5PM says no one!!!  "You get an extra hour sleep" they say!  HA - obviously 'they' don't have animals!!!!  I think here in US, AZ is about the only place that doesn't change.  Not sure about other countries.

Elections are a week away.  Big changes ahead - regardless.  NO political opinions here please - just a reminder to VOTE!  It truly is important - not something to be taken lightly.

Let us talk holidays today.  I have all my canning yet to do - much of it goes in Christmas baskets.  When weather cools, I will be ordering my summer sausage I get every year from Walnut Creek.
I have started getting smaller things for stuffers in baskets and for the littles.  I need so much more.
I LOVE the above meme.
It says a lot to me.  I think we need to get away from super expensive gifts - whether for children or adults.  I can hear people now saying "well, they will just throw things away".  That is so not true for many people (not all).  I happen to have a family that loves getting goodie baskets - teens included.  It is like a treasure hunt!!!!  They get fun things they may not make or buy themselves.
I "listen" all year to things they all say.
Small businesses are important - more than ever.  These people are just trying to support families - not corporations.  You find so many neat items too.
Don't have room for a tree?  Have pets that might get into a tree?  I love this idea.  This is in a corner - but could be done on a flat wall as well.  A tree of family pictures!  You could use family, friends, pets, moments - pictures of anything.  Little battery lights amongst them.  Just so cute!

Dollar Tree fun!  Get a pack of those little battery candle lights - paint and ribbon and you have some super cute little decorations for a little tree or for a window or around a mirror.  The ideas are endless.

Another FREE or super cheap little ornament.  I think these would be cute little gifts for teacher or office workers or the bus driver.  Just a little token gift.

Baskets (bags - whatever) can be for young or old.  Little games, treats, crayons, books, candles, warm socks, teas, cups, coffees, homemade goodies - you name it.  These are so fun to put together and fun to receive.  I know I enjoy them.
Great fun for someone in a nursing home as well - little bottles of things they can use, puzzles, word search, stamps, pens, envelopes packets of cards, warm socks, etc.

ALSO - time to start getting gift cards you might want to give.  I can buy about any card I choose at Kroger and with a digital coupon I get extra gas points for myself as well.  Win-Win!

If you need to mail gifts - think gift cards.  No extra postage needed.  If you have mailed a package as of late - you know how crazy expensive postage is.

Just a few things to get that mind motivated and thinking of maybe doing something totally different this year.  Have fun with it.
Check holiday bazaars are well - they are starting up about every weekend here.  Lots of cute homemade items to buy!  Ideas to be had.

What are some neat ideas you all use?  What homemade gift seems to be a favorite for your family?
Love to hear new ideas.
I will be giving 'foody' ideas over the next few weeks.

Have a great day.  May it be bright and joyful!

Weekly Wrap Up 10/27

Happy Sunday to all.  Hoping this finds you all well and safe.  Cool morning here in Indiana.  These brisk mornings, sure make it hard to get out of the cozy bed!  I have the thermostat set at 67*, yet it hasn't turned on.  The house stays pretty comfy.

We finally have some color setting on around here.  There are reds, yellows, oranges, crimson, burgundy, etc.  It is getting pretty.  I saw my big old woodpecker out there yesterday!  I haven't seen it for a while.  Also saw a red-winged black bird, that must be flying through.  I have during the spring and early summer - then they usually disappear.  How about that big old moon this last week?  WOW
We have had 'Micheal Myers' walking up and down the street this week!!!  Neighbor from down the road - he walks slowly down the street (mask on) and sure makes traffic slow and take notice!!!!
                                                                            YES!!!!!
My frugal week:
  • Lots of laundry and used the dehumidifier water
  • Got to air the house a lot - had a lovely week
  • Working on cleaning out the garden, the area between the garden and fence (flowers), the huge New England aster, the reeds on the pampas grass, etc.  Got lots and lots of yard/garden work done
  • Back hose is drained and put up
  • Received my 15% off coupon on entire purchase from Ollies - will use at some point for kid's gifts
  • Got another negative light bill.  This has been going on much of the year.  I have been on a reasonable budget plan for years - and suddenly I am showing credit all the time.  I did go ahead and pay the budget several months - now I get a negative bill and NO envelope!!  It also won't let me pay anything by phone until out of negative.  Cool!
  • Cut my hair at home and root touch-up
  • No grocery shopping.  I did run out and got NON-food items to add to the panty.  Furnace filters, cat food and treats, medicated lip balms, throat lozenges, stocking stuffers for some gift baskets, etc.  Oh, I did get one thing at Big Lots for the food pantry.  A great deal - no mixing, other than water - will make almost free tortillas!!!
Clearance of .62 for the whole bag.  Will place in glass jars and be ready to go!!!!!! Love homemade tortillas!
  • Did a total vacuum and dust of main floor
  • Meals from home with what I have
  • Finished up a half gallon of milk dated 10/5 - still tasted perfect
  • Opened a new bag of A/P flour - dated 12/21 - perfect
Meals this past week:
Chicken strips, fried corn/cabbage, sliced toms
BLT and fruit
Fried green tomatoes and a fried egg
Faux Philly beef & cheese open face, fried onion slices and sliced toms
Smoked sausage, 2 small corn on cob, salad
Mexi chicken fillet, fried zucchini, sliced toms
Cheesy tuna/noodle casserole w/peas added and sliced toms
Lots of fruit and nuts for snacks

The sun has been shining, the colors are starting, nature is great, kitties are loving - super day here.  What have you all been up to this week?  Did you find any deals?  Anyone still canning/freezing?  I am going to finally start canning this week!
Prayers for all in the storm affected areas - whatever part of the world you are in.  Look forward to hearing from you all.

Be safe and healthy and have a wonderful week ahead.  Smile and enjoy all the gifts you have been given.
Blessings to you and yours from me and my humble little home.

Sometimes the Best Things in Life are Free!

Hello this Thursday!  Hope you are all well and safe.  It is a chilly morn here.  We have ups and downs with the temps - it is that time.  Come Tuesday next week - it may be close to 80* again!
The daylight hours are sure shorter.  Used to be about 6AM - 9PM, now it is about 8AM - 7PM.  Soon the clocks will change again (UGH) and it will be dark even earlier.  That is ONE part of winter that I despise!  I am a sunlight kind of person!

Today's post will be short.  Now that the seasons are changing, we look at life differently.  I think we all do it.  Cozy and comfort are what we think of.
I want to sit and rest here!  It looks so cozy and warm.  To sit and read a good book and to be all warm and comfy.  That just sounds like bliss.  It seems we all keep so very busy with home, yards and just going - that we get little of that sweet bliss.  We all need to take more time to just relax and enjoy!  We need to slow down and enjoy the simple things.

I do believe this with my whole heart.  I know often times medication is important and needed - but there are so many things that work well for our health and well-being.  Medicine or not - these things more than HELP each of us.

As I get older - the more I understand this.  So many free and yet simple things in life to make us each a healthier version (mental or physical) of ourselves.  I said above - I need my sunshine, that is hugely important to me.  I need my sweet kitties - they give a very important kind of joy.  I need my family and friends.
Nature makes me happy, and it lifts my spirit.  So many simple things - so much joy.

Just want to take a moment and thank you all for being some of the 'medicine' I need and have needed to keep me going.  You all have done so much over the years, to help me through stressful situations and horrible moments.  We ALL try to lift each other up and bring some joy into each other's days!  You are all the best.
I LOVE THAT.
I look forward to being able to that in the future as well.

So as the days get shorter - let the love and friendship lengthen.
Take a moment to bring joy to another and to appreciate the simple things, and you will receive much in return.
Have a wonderful day my friends!!!

Using Surplus to Make Great Meals

Midweek - here we are again.  It is a lovely morning here.  Looks to be another nice day.

Today's chat is more about using what you already have and the gifts of fall as well.  Whether you grow food, are gifted surplus goodies (I am seeing that a lot), or finding produce deals - let's have fun and eat those goodies up.  There are so many ways to fix things - there should be no boredom in meals.  Do some new things and you may find a new family favorite.

Right now many have an abundance of various things.  Winter squash, cabbage, potatoes, beets, greens, you name it.  USE IT!

When it comes to all fall veggies - roasting is a favorite for me.  Cube, slice, do whatever you like and roast them with some oil and seasonings and yum!
You can roast individually or several types together.  Love me some roasted Brussel sprouts - or halved and sauteed in a bit of bacon grease - Mmmmmm good.

POTATOES
Think about all the many ways you can fix.  Fried, hash browns, scalloped, Au Gratin, fries, baked, boiled, in soups, in roasts w/other veggies, potato soup.............  Great for breakfast, lunch and dinner

CABBAGE
Can be fried, boiled, roasted, added to stir fry and soups.  Cut cabbage steaks and broil or roast or grill.  Make sauerkraut or slaw.  Again many uses

TOMATOES
Red or green - both have uses.  Use in your salads or just slice for a side (or a snack).  Make sauces of all kinds.  Add to pasta salads.  Green can be breaded and fried (a fav of mine).  You can make pickle relish with them.  A green tomato pie is fabulous.  Add to any meal.  I have even diced and added to veggie soup for a little different taste.

OTHERS
Add to soups, have as sides, add to casseroles.  Add veggies to things like tuna noodle casserole or to mac n cheese to raise the level a bit.  Fresh veggies in pasta salads.  Mix together and make a new taste sensation.
What I call mixed veggie hash!  Green beans, potatoes, carrots, and ground beef all simmered (fried) together.  So good and filling.  Kind of a meal in itself.  I am a huge fan of one pot meals.  I think that would be handy for moms with kiddos and a busy schedule.

Just about all veggies can be fried.  Sure, we all make fries with regular and sweet potatoes - but other things can be fried too.  Green beans fries are a treat!  Bread and fry and you will be amazed.  Of course there is zucchini, green tomatoes, okra, carrot strips, just about anything.  I have even made fried cucumbers and pickles.  Have fun and try new things.  I also sauté corn, peppers, onions, green beans, cabbage, carrots, radish, turnips, just about any veggie.

MEAT - well use what you have or find cheaply.  Poultry and pork are decently priced right now most places.  Make up small meatballs when you can - they can be used in sauces and soups or use in kabobs with those veggies.  Chop or slice a chicken breast or a couple pork chops to use in stir fry or fried rice or soup - sure makes the meat go farther.

Think about making wraps instead of sandwiches.  Lighter calories and super easy to handle.  You can use tortillas as wraps, for burritos, enchiladas, tacos, quesadillas, all sorts of things.  You can buy them cheaply or they are super easy to make.
Think about making biscuits - great as a bread for a meal, can make super breakfast sandwiches, good for a quick snack, they can be a topping to a dessert or casserole, and easy and cheap to make.

Here is a fun version of cornbread!  I love fried cornbread.  I have even eaten with butter and syrup with a side of eggs for a meal.  Cornbread is another easy and yummy bread to make.  You can eat as a side, you can put over a zesty mix-up (like chili or taco meats) and bake into a casserole.  My daddy was a fan of cornbread and milk.  I even remember my siblings talking about that being breakfast or lunch some days when times were tough.  Makes great polenta as well - I love fried slices of polenta.
BREADS of all sorts can be used in many ways.  You can use for sandwiches - I am still a big bread slices over buns kind of person.  You can make bread pudding - this can be so easy and you can add about anything you want to fun it up.
Make your own croutons, breadcrumbs, or dressing/stuffing bread.  Stale bread is great for many of the forementioned ideas.  Think about French toast or cinnamon toast.  Covered with gravy.  many, many options.

If you aren't a meat eater - think about adding lentils or beans to dishes to hearty them up.  It will give you protein and add that hearty feeling and taste of meat.  You can use lentils in about anything - stews, chili, soups, tacos, etc.  They are super cheap too!  Would stretch those meat dollars.

Now when you add in all the normal things we keep on hand - baking supplies, rice, dried beans, pastas, etc. - you can make just an enormous amount of meals.
NEVER turn down 'gifted' produce.  Take it - use what you can, preserve some if you are of that mindset or share with others.  Just NEVER say NO.  I had a wise elderly gentleman tell me once - whether you can use it or not - take it if offered.  One day you will need something, and if you say no enough times, you may not be considered!!  True words.

So enjoy those end of garden goodies, those last of the season farm markets, store clearances, surplus stores, etc. and get you some cheap goodies.  Hopefully you have friends and family offering fresh goodies as well.
Get creative and make GOOD EATING!  Try new things and USE WHAT YOU HAVE.  It really does help to SAVE some $$$$$.

One of my favorite meals of the summer ALWAYS!  Don't even need the meat.  I just love all the veggies and fruits I can enjoy.
Eat the COLOR and eat HEALTHY.

Have a super day!!!

Food, Oh Fabulous Food

Happy Tuesday to all.  Hoping this finds you safe and well.  I seem to be on slow this morning.  I laid in the bed longer than normal this morning, kitties came and curled up with me, and it sure felt cozy.  Now I am in catch up mode.  Funny how just a few minutes out of your routine can throw you for a loop!
It is nice outdoors - about 50*F and looks to be a sunny day.  As soon as the sun started to pop out - the birdies were singing so pretty.  What a great way to start the day - kitties and nature.

Food - the basis of life.  Every living thing needs some type of nourishment to thrive.
It is now time for all the wonderful fall produce.  Whether you grow it, find it on mark down, or go to farm markets, or are gifted goodies - use it and love it.
If you have an abundance of 'whatever' make the most of it.  You can - can and freeze and dehydrate - but if you aren't in the mindset to do that - find new ways to eat it up.
This is time for cabbage, brussels, broccoli, potatoes, onions, beans, some peas, greens, tomatoes (both green and red), parsnips, turnips, winter squash, etc.  There are tons of variety out there, and right now can be had for pretty cheap prices.

Get those kitchen basics as well.  Flour, sugar, all baking products, spices and herbs, eggs (they seem to be getting cheaper), butter, oils etc.
With these basics you can make not only sweets and yummies from the kitchen, but also lots of good hearty food.  Biscuits, noodles, dumplings, pancakes, breads, crusts, etc.

Our options are limitless really.  Poultry and pork seem to be the cheaper meat products at this time.  Turkeys, they say, will be at least 15% less in cost this year.  When you find them cheap - buy extra if you have the room.  If you don't have room to store whole turkeys - thaw and cook - then wrap and freeze for later.  Cents per pound is cheaper than any lunchmeat or deli meat that can be had.  Ground chicken or pork can be used just like any other ground meat.  You can always add bouillon to change the taste.
Buy the deals when you find them - stock up.  Tis the season for lots of great food finds.
Holidays will be upon us soon, and that always makes for some great sales.

Tomorrow, I will give lots of ideas for using 'normal' veggies and fruits in new and different ways.

Food is such a beautiful thing.  It truly is.  Look in your cabinets and frig and freezer and see what you have.  All those labels, and all those fresh and yummy things - THEY TRULY ARE BEAUTY!
Isn't that something?  Things of such beauty are full of nourishment for your body.  I find that so amazing.  Color is huge - learn to eat the color - it is full of vitamins and minerals that you need in your body.

Until tomorrow and lots of fun ideas - have a beautiful and joyful day!

Weekly Wrap-Up 10/20

Happy Sunday to all.  My gosh, times is flying by!  Another week has passed and soon this month will be over.  Just amazing.
We have had cold and we have had warmth this week.  Couple of morning were down in the 30's.  Days have gone from 50's to 70's.  It is still pretty green in these parts.  I guess they are saying peak color should hit outer areas in another week or so.
The big old moon sure has been magnificent the past few nights!  So big and bright and full.  I find it so neat to think that no matter where we are - we are all looking at the same moon.  Kind of cool to think about.
I had a HUGE old hawk in the yard a couple days - my goodness it was the biggest one I think I have ever seen.  I did a double take - it almost looked like an eagle sitting on the fence.  Huge and really a beauty.

I had a much gentler week than last week.  I did not work myself silly.
My frugal week:
  • I had lunch with school chums - albeit a cold luncheon!  Outside in a shelter house (thank goodness for shelter).  Sleet, rain and wind - but we still had a nice visit. $5 - had pizza, fruit, veggies and goodies
  • I did go and get my driver's license renewed.  It was painless!  In, done, and out in 10 minutes
  • Over a period of 3 days I have picked all the garden produce, except cabbages still out there.  I now have boxes and boxes of green tomatoes!!!!  Some ripe, some starting to turn and lots and lots of green - which will turn.
  • I have sprayed and sprayed for the box elder bugs - killing 1,000's.  I am so over these things - I want to sit on my porch again before it gets too cold!
  • Visited with a couple neighbors this week
  • Made a pot of cream of broccoli/cheese soup - freezing 2 containers for later
  • Made meatloaf burgers and froze extra for later (just mix up like regular meatloaf, but fry in skillet in burger form)
  • I did turn on the furnace 2 mornings for 1 cycle each - to remove the chill.
  • Have been cleaning, cleaning - it never ends
  • Laundry and used dehumidifier water in laundry
  • NO grocery shopping - using what I have & cooking at home
  • Paid all bills I had on hand
Meals this past week:
Grilled cheese and tomato soup
American goulash, sliced tomatoes
Luncheon out
Cream of broccoli/cheese soup over rice
Baked potato, 2 sausage patties and a side salad
Cup of broccoli soup and a veggie wrap/roll-up
Meatloaf burger, mashed potatoes and sliced tomatoes
SNACKS - apples, popcorn, mandarins, juice

So there you have it.  Not a lot going on here.  I plan on working outside the next couple days cleaning out the garden spot, putting up the hose and trying to empty out rain barrels (what is left).  Still need to mow again.  Lots of odds and ends - then it will be getting busy inside time!
How was your week?  Did you get any good bargains or save money in any new way?  Gardening, canning, freezing?  Holiday shopping?
I so look forward to hearing from you all.  There are still a few I wish we would hear from.  I have even sent a couple e-mails and not heard back, so I am worried about a few of you.  PLEASE check in.

I hope you are all recovering from the storms and starting to get your lives back in order.  Prayers for everyone's health and safety.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home!
**************************

Finally. brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you.
Philippians 4:8-9

Lord, as we go forward in this coming week, help us each one to appreciate all the wonderful gifts that we receive every moment of every day.  Help us to love all the beauty of the season and please help us each to be kind and loving to all that we encounter.  May we each have peace in our lives.  AMEN

Take Your Control Where You Can

Happy frosty Thursday!  We had our first frost - ugh.  It is in the upper 30's here this AM.  I knew it was coming - but just not ready.  It looks to warm up for at least a few days.
How is it Thursday already?  Dang the week has flown by.  Well, the month is flying by - we are over halfway through October.

The weather is one of those things we cannot control - but we can control how we react and can control our temperament!   I am not a fan of cold - but heck, I get another day, so I am fine.  Too many things more important in this world.
I have seen so many talk about the recent hurricanes and flooding, and I just almost cry when I see their beautiful attitudes.  They are alive - even though losing everything in some cases - yet they smile and praise the Lord.  It is amazing.  Their attitude is infectious!  Making the best of a bad situation.

There are many things we cannot control - but we can control other things.

We cannot control that getting older brings new challenges - but we can take the best care of ourselves as possible - and stay as healthy as possible.

We cannot control the inflation and greed in this world - but we can control how we spend.  We can make different choices in our purchasing - thus saving ourselves maybe a bit of money.  We can control the things we eat.  We can control our purchase powers.  Buy from thrift stores or secondhand shops, buy from small family shops, buy the 'good' food and not the junk.  We can make many decisions still.

We cannot control the rates the utilities charge - but we can turn the heat down, turn off the lights, and not wastefully let water flow from the faucets.  Put on an extra blanket on the bed, or extra clothes in the house, use some solar lights or light candles, catch the water flowing from the faucet (that is warming) to use for pets or plants.

The list goes on and on - some things are out of our control, so we have to learn to not fret about them.  They just take away precious time and energy from our lives.  Control what you can and let the rest go.  Your life will happier.
I am not a big worrier.  I used to be - and I used to have quite a temper.  Somewhere along the road of 'growing up' I learned it really did no good for me or those around me.  I think I finally got happy with my life and that made a huge difference.
That silly little song we all sang at some point "don't worry - be happy" is so very true.

I think these items are needed in every life.  If you do these things - life will be so much better.
I know they seem like no brainer things - but I know a ton of people who do not do at least half of these!
Some people grow older and just never learn.

Take time a do all you can to be a good person, do the right things, and be positive.  If we all do that, the world would be a little better.  We can make a difference in our lives and maybe with each person we meet.  That gets the ball rolling - who knows where it could lead.

Have a wonderful day.  Enjoy the remainder of your week.
Do a good thing every day!

OUT? - Never fear - Make it!

Good chilly Wednesday morning!  Chilly day here again.  No frost in my area last night.  Some outer areas did get it though.
Yesterday was the outdoor luncheon.  Well, on my way there - it started sleeting!  Yep.  Then sun popped out for a minute after getting there, and then it poured rain and got much colder (only rain received in Oct. - go figure).  Thank goodness for the shelter house!  We did have a good time & pizza and goodies, but it was so cooooold.  I met a couple people I didn't really know, and that was a definite meant to meet for one of them.  Some people just show up in our lives when it is meant to be (or we show up in theirs).  That is a whole other story!!
What a fun scarecrow or yard art!

Today let us talk a bit about some easy things to make when you run out.  We can make so many things at home, yet we tend to go for convenience.  We are all guilty of that.  I know I am.
I like knowing how to make things myself.  Sometimes (often) the homemade version is even better.

STIR FRYE SAUCE
Easy-peasy!  This is simple but makes a tasty sauce for stir fry veggies/meat.  Use on any meal you would normally use store bought sauce.  Raises the level of taste!  I have used this often - as the sauces at the store just cost too much IMO.

Super easy.  You can play around with this and add other ingredients for a different 'flavor'.  This is just so easy and really does taste good.

It really is easy and good.  G used to like this better than store bought - unless we were lucky enough to have had pure maple syrup.

NO Manwich!
No problem - make your own SLOPPY JOE
This is how I make sloppy Joe here at home.  Have made my own for years.  Now I also use a good dash of Worcestershire sauce too - gives it a nice tang.
Actually, I don't really measure anything - LOL.  That is me.   I have made it so many times, that I can just add ingredients and know it will be yummy.
This does however, give a good base to start.

We will continue to add recipes over time on 'how to' make your own.  It sure can save time and money.
Do you have any certain thing you would like a HOMEMADE VERSION RECIPE for?
Let me know and it will be added to the list and posted soon.

Have a lovely day and SMILE!

Tuesday Show & Tell at my House

Happy Tuesday to all.  I sure hope you are all well and safe.  Welp, here we are halfway through another month!  It seems fall is finally here in my area!  Goodness, it is a bit chilly this morning.  Looks like it rained a little over night - not much here as far as I can tell. (the first rain of Oct.).   The Blazer was wet, but that was about it.
Today is supposed to be the ickiest day of the week - chilly, breezy and damp - and guess what?  I have a luncheon to attend that is going to be outside in a nearby shelter house!!  What luck.  I guess I just bundle up a little.  I am betting it will be a short affair! (highs in low 50's).
It is 68* in the house this morning - so still no heat on.  My house warms up nicely during the day and it really holds the heat.
Some of the fall decorations out front of my house.  All free - as the birds are responsible for these.  This picture really doesn't do it justice.  The colors on the plumes are so pretty.  Browns and golds.

What to do when you are chilly?  Snuggle under a blankie!

Just wanted to post a picture of the bean find, so no one would doubt me!  The top pic shows the date on the can.  I still can't believe this find.  Kroger usually has some decent markdowns - but nothing like this have I seen in ages!!!!

Anyone purchased this item?  I used to keep a jug of bleach around for different uses - but hardly ever used it and when I got ready to - it was often leaked out and empty.  Luckily, I kept it in the basement.  I found these and decided to get them to have on hand.  These can be used in laundry, for cleaning or toilets.  I did try one tablet in the toilet, and it fizzed and cleaned well.  Bleach is not something that gets used often in my house - I prefer peroxide (laundry) or vinegar & baking soda - but you never know when these might come in handy.  Shelf stable and no leaking, so I find it a win.  Just a nice thing to have in the pantry.  This was just a little over $3 - I have seen at both Kroger and WM.
I also keep denture cleaning tablets on hand for the toilet cleaning once in a while.  They really work (like Efferent).  I don't have dentures but decided to try them out for cleaning porcelain.  Works.

Well, the sun is shining at the moment - so misleading looking.  Sunshine always brightens my spirits.  It just calls for a smile.
Frost is called for tonight in many surrounding counties, but not here according to the news.  I still have a lot of green tomatoes to get picked.  Yesterday I got all that were starting to turn.  They will ripen in the house - but there is a lot out there!  After the next couple nights, things warm up a bit again.  Oh, we will see how I feel when I get back from the luncheon.  Maybe just a tarp to be sure tonight!

Wishing you each a lovely day.  Hope all of our Canadians friends had a lovely Thanksgiving!
Be safe and smile and spread a little joy.

Weekly Wrap Up 10/13

Happy Sunday to all.  I surely hope this finds everyone safe and well.  Continued prayers for all those that were in the path of the hurricanes and storms.
It is a cool morning and slightly breezy.  Temps have been lovely this past week, but they will be cooling in the upcoming week.  It looks like 50's and 60's for highs.  A couple nights of 'maybe' frost.  I know it is time, but I am just not ready.
Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow to our Canadian friends!!!!!!  Enjoy your day with family and friends!

Nothing looks like this here yet!  So much green still - not much has changed at all.  I have tons of leaves falling from the tulip poplar - but they aren't pretty.
The box elder bugs are ridiculous.  Hundreds (or 1,000's) everywhere.  Hopefully the cool snap takes care of them.  Thursday, I looked out at the birdbath early and there was a robin getting a drink and taking a bath!  Haven't seen one for a couple months.  Kind of late here for them.
We have had so much sunshine - all week.  I did get a lot done outside - I am so sore!

My week:
  • Did a lot of yard work out front - deadheading, pulling and cutting
  • Changed out yard flag
  • Ran out on Wed. to do bank and DMV.  Well, the computer lied and the DMV was closed Wed. not Mon.  So that didn't happen - still need to go there.  Will do this week when cooler.  I did go to the bank and took care of things and stopped at Ollie's for peanuts for the squirrels and blue jays.
  • Neighbor sent me over a bowl of her corn pudding (the best I have ever had).  YUM.  She also gave me 10+ pounds of apples - called Mollies - they sure are good.
  • Got the house power washed and the garage - took 2 days.  The back of the garage (N side) was actually green, top to bottom!! (it hadn't been cleaned in 2 years).    All is white and clean now.  One thing leads to another - so I cleaned the case of generator, the underside of small overhang (side door), the cement bench, the big angel, the backdrop of deck and the deck, and part of the shed!  Yep - this old gal worked her bum off.  Of course, I still need to do the deck again - after drying, I see what I missed, and I need to do the underside of the big front porch roof.  Another day!
  • I then had to wash windows
  • Ran to the hardware up the street and got a new connector to repair the big hose.  Got that fixed
  • Took apart the old potting table.  The wood was rotting and the metal all rusted.  So, I set the metal out back for the scrap guy
  • Another neighbor came over and gave me a nice bag of homemade Chex Mix!  NUM
  • Did a big vacuum and dust inside
  • Used water from barrels for watering plants.  I still have geraniums blooming as well as inpatients. The begonias still look pretty too.  Garden still going.
  • HARVEST - tomatoes, one zucchini
  • NO heat or AC
  • I rigged the wheel on the mower to hopefully give me one more mow this fall.  It seems to be sturdy (for now).  We will see - just didn't feel like shopping for one
  • Ran to Kroger on Sat. for grapes .99/lb. and milk 1.39/half.  Looked around and did I get a deal!  I got 10 cans each of navy beans and dark red kidney beans (10) for .14 a can!!!!!  Dated 2027!  I usually make my own - but will be nice to have on shelf or to donate.  Got 4 cans of garbanzo beans on clearance for .77 each.  I got all that was left.  WOOHOO
Meals this past week:
Chicken strips, corn on cob and sliced toms
Hamburger hash, cuke & toms cut up
Small veggie pizza - using what I had on hand
Chicken/rice/broccoli - corn pudding
Grilled zucchini 'steaks' and salad
Spanish style rice with beans and sausage added
Grilled bean/rice/cheese burrito topped with a little salad

There you have it.  I did work hard this week.  I am sore and tired (especially my hands).  BUT I got it done and feel so accomplished.  Not too snaggy for an old chick!  I did sleep well a couple nights!
Now it will be getting the garden stuff cleaned out.  Oh, how I hate that - since it is still growing.  It just seems so final - summer is over.

Did you get any deals this week?  Do you have any garden still going?  Canning or freezing?
What have you been up to?  I love hearing from all of you - near and far.  I am missing some of you - please check in.

Many continued prayers for all that are in the south and for those in other places that have been having big storms and rain and flooding.  Hoping you and your families are well.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

O give thanks to the Lord, call on His name, make known his deeds among the peoples!
Psalms 105:1

Lord, we thank You for all that we receive each and every day.  Not every day is what we may want or expect, but we are truly blessed to wake each day and have food to nourish our bodies.  There are so many tiny things in this world, that are beautiful and wonderful and aren't really so tiny at all.  Help us each to appreciate all the wonders and blessings we receive - both large and small.  With a grateful heart we pray.  AMEN

Wealthy or Not - Much More That Matters

Good morning to all.  Hope you are safe and well.  Hope all in Florida are safe.  Thank goodness this storm is moving out to sea.   So much clean-up to do.  I sure hope you are safe as well as your families.  Check in and let us know.

Today just a bit about money or lack of it.  I know some folks who are pretty wealthy (money) and never help a bit or give a dime to anyone or anything.  I know folks that haven't got a 'pot to **ss in', as they say, that are as generous as can be.  Of course, I know some that have money that DO all they can - so it really isn't about money.  It is about HEART to me.

We just never know what is behind the scenes.  There are people with lots of money that look all prim and proper - but how do they live their 'private' lives?  We see glitz and glamour - but not the well kept older clothes or the fact that they may eat only at home or the giving that they do.  You just never know.
I also know some that barely make it financially - yet they have such caring and big hearts.  If they can't give money - they give of time, they try to be good citizens, they do lots of little bits!
I want this to be an encouragement to many struggling and thinking it isn't worth it or feel bad about their selves.
You are GOOD and you do the best you can.  That is what is important.

A fine home has nothing to do with size or stuff in my opinion.  It is about cozy, comfort, cleanliness and love.  You may not have a lot of stuff - but you can have the greatest home around.
A McMansion doesn't impress me much - or actually at all.

So many people think because they buy second hand or cook at home or use up bits and pieces or cut hair or mend clothes, etc. means 'poor'.  NOPE.  I am not wealthy - yet I am good, but I do all those things.  It is just good sense to me.
Doing the best you can to be a good steward of your life, your money and your time is important.
We truly do not need to impress anyone!
You can have a low income and have an upbeat spirit.  That is so important.

Never be ashamed of being frugal - regardless of how much money you have.  NEVER!
Do not be pressured into immediate gratification, or unnecessary spending.  You know you and what you can do - stick to your guns.  Be proud of who you are and what you DO have.

To quote Amy of Tightwad Gazette:
"To be successful and happy in the frugal lifestyle, we have to be proud and confident in our choices.  We must have a clear view of our goals, and we must understand the tradeoffs we're making.  If we do this, we will feel no shame about being frugal.  Instead, we'll understand that we have a wealthy attitude."

Life is all about choices.  Make the best ones you can for YOU and YOUR family.
If you have money or not - live with a good and caring heart.
No matter how small the act you do - it may totally change someone's day.  A helping hand or a smile can mean more to another than a thousand dollars.
Spread positive words not negative.  As crazy as it may sound, YOU will reap great rewards from that one!
Small acts pay huge rewards.

Prayers for all involved with these darned old storms.  Many prayers will continue to be said.  Bless you all in every way.
Wishing you all a good weekend.

Have a wonderful day!

Short & Sweet

Morning to all.  Another cool morning here, warming later in the day.  I plan on going to the DMV today - oh joy!  I hope it goes smoothly and quickly. I hate going to places like that - but it is time to renew the driver's license.  Then on to the bank (across the street).

I am praying so hard for all those in the south.  I cannot imagine what they are and will be going through.  As you can - please check in if you are in this part of the world.  I truly hope all that are so inclined will PRAY.  I pray that God lessen the severity of this storm and keep all in its path safe.
I have always intended for this little blog to be an informative and helpful place.  I also want it to be a safe place for people.  A refuge of sorts.
Let us be the light that others need.  You never know who you may need tomorrow - so be kind today, to all that show up in your path.
Lift up, praise, applaud, and promote others.  Do not criticize and say negative things.
We are all learning - no matter our ages.

This blog is like a child to me.  I have cared for and nurtured it over the years.  I love it and all the sweet, lovely people that come to visit.
I look forward to people asking questions and to those saying 'that really helped'.
Thank you to all the rays of sunshine in my life.
You can't pour from an empty cup - so all the encouraging and helpful ideas are appreciated for all.

I try to keep this spot free of politics - that can be a very volatile subject.  If others want to do politics or discuss it on their sites that is just fine - but I just think this is one thing I will continue to stay away from on my little spot.

May you all have a lovely and beautiful day.
PLEASE PRAY for all involved in these nasty storms.
Safety for all.

Handy Make It - Have It - Gift It

Hello to all.  Very chilly morning here in central IN.  It will warm up today - but these cooler nights do make for good sleeping.  I have my bedroom window open a couple inches all night, no heat and feeling all snuggly in the bed.
Thinking of all the people in Florida and south of there.  So sad they are having to go through all of this yet again.  Please leave if you are in imminent danger of any sort.  MANY prayers for all. 💕💔

Just a few recipes today for making things at home, instead of buying them.  Great to have on our pantry shelves and they can make nice gifts for those goody baskets.
I know many of these items can be purchased cheaply, but often we have no idea what all they contain.  Make it yourself and you have a better idea.  Plus, they just taste better!

MOCHA ESPRESSO
1 C instant coffee
1 C sugar or measured equivalent of sweetener
4 1/2 C nonfat dry milk
1/2 C cocoa
Stir everything together and then process in the blender until it is powdered.
Use 2 Tbsp. to one small cup of very hot water
It does taste like espresso!  Adjust your water to taste.  I am not a regular coffee drinker - but really do love this.
Put in a cute jar with instructions and neat little cup - super gift.

FUN SOFT PRETZELS
1 pack of yeast
1 1/2 C warm water
1 Tbsp. sugar
1 Tbsp salt
4 C flour
1 egg
Combine the yeast, water and sugar together in a large bowl.  Stir in flour.  Knead the dough until smooth.  Pull apart pieces and shape into pretzels.  Use water to 'glue' ends together.  Place on a greased baking sheet or parchment paper, brush with the beaten egg and sprinkle with salt.  Bake in preheated oven at 425* for about 15 minutes.
I use pink salt that is larger grain than regular salt.  Just my preference.
Fun to make and eat.  Gift with some cheese dip!

CHOCOLATE SYRUP
1/2 C cocoa
1 C water
2 C sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. vanilla
Mix the cocoa and the water in a pan - heat to dissolve cocoa.   Add sugar and stir to dissolve.  Boil for 3 minutes.  Add salt and vanilla.  Pour in jar and keep refrigerated.  Great over ice cream or any favorite dessert (yummy on cheesecake).  Lasts for many months in the frig.

Click on recipe to enlarge and see better.
Use up the apple scraps when making applesauce or apple butter or pie filling.  Use and make a new yummy!

As the temperatures cool, I get in the mood for comfort items.  I like having ingredients on hand to make these items and not having to make a trip out to buy them.
It can be a fun thing to do with the kiddos and it is just good old fashioned good eats!
Mom always made our chocolate syrup, and she made jumbo pretzels and scrap jelly.  Nothing was wasted and most everything was homemade.

Have fun and try something new.  Encourage someone today and be a POSITIVE light in the world.  We need it!
There is so much negative in the world - WE DON'T NEED NEGATIVE COMMENTS HERE.

Have a great day to all.
Enjoy all the simple joys!

Weekly Wrap-up 10/6

Happy Sunday to all.  Hope this finds everyone safe and well.  Hoping those affected by the hurricane are getting some help and recovering a little.
Here we are in October, almost a week gone already.  We have been having nice weather this past week and will again this upcoming week.  There is not a drop of rain forecast for the upcoming week.
I mentioned all the stinkbugs around, we also are going through box elder bug season!  They are everywhere.  They love the sunny sides of buildings during the day.  I am not a bug fan! A tip to anyone having a problem with them - simple soapy water sprayed on them will kill them!

Yesterday was the rescheduled family outing.  It was such a good time.  My niece has a huge in ground pool that is heated and the kiddos and all the younger folks had a ball.  The water felt like bath water. (no I didn't get in). We had lots of fellowship, catching up and lots of good food.
My kitties thought I left them forever, I think!  I was gone much of the day and evening, and they got 'dinner' late very late.  Then I changed into bed clothes, and went to lay down (at 9PM), as I was tired - and here they came.  They both got right up on the bed and curled up with me.  Lots of petting and snuggles.  It was so sweet.
My week was calm and quiet.
  • I got the backyard all cleaned of limbs and debris
  • I took a few walks around the neighborhood this week
  • Picked a bouquet
  • Did some power washing
  • Had a nice visit with neighbors 2X this week - porch setting
  • One neighbor brought me some pumpkin roll and a sweet card.  She was gone most of a week earlier, and I got all her packages that were delivered.  She was planning her granddaughter's wedding.
  • Lots of laundry and used dehumidifier water in laundry
  • Mowed the entire yard - lost a front wheel of the mower halfway through! I persevered and got it all done.  I have worked that poor mower to pieces over many years - may be time to get a new one!!  LOL
  • Family outing - rode with brother
  • NO A/C or heat this past week.  Enjoying fresh air
  • Harvest - cabbage, tomatoes
  • Using rainwater from barrels to water
  • I did a run to Kroger for fruit & cheese deals.  Cheese blocks were 2.99/lb.  Apples and mandarins on sale
  • Cooking from home and using all leftovers
  • Cleaning more and more
Meals this past week:
Chili
Sausage gravy over toast and scrambled eggs
Zucchini boat and salad
Loaded baked potato, side salad
Grilled cheese and 'stoup' (last from the freezer)
Cheeseburger, fries and fresh veggies
Family event - hotdogs, chili, and lots of goodies
SNACKS - fruit, popcorn, crackers and butter

Not much exciting here.  Just a calm and quiet type week.  I worked on the mower some after getting done, trying to fix the wheel - I don't believe there is much hope with my skills!  At least it is the end of the season.
I need to go out this coming week to DMV and renew my driver's license.  Can't believe it's that time again.
It will be cool this week, so hoping to get a lot done.
How are you and how was your week?  Again, please check in and let us all know you are OK - we do worry.  Did you get any deals this week?  Still getting garden produce?

Be safe and healthy this coming week.  Prayers for all in need with spoken and unspoken issues.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

Let Us Shop SMARTLY - and Eat & Live Well

Happy Thursday to all.  Hope this finds you all well and safe.  Still needing so many to check in - I am worried about a lot of you gals.
Looks to be a lovely day here - hoping to get some yard work done.  Planning on staying home again today.

Might as well finish the week with a continued talk about pantries, freezers, shopping and supplies.  We are all seeing the stories about people hoarding things already.  It is just crazy.  The West coast ports are still open and local and regional items are available as well (in many places).  There are many people in need right now after the storms and devastation - so please be kind and thoughtful and do not go crazy with hoarding.  Slow and steady.

Just some things to think about when shopping:
USE IT - if you buy it, make sure it is something you will use. Never waste.

LEARN to USE & ENJOY Leftovers - in some way - new or conventional.  If nothing else save for soup

PLAN your meals - Plan around what you have FIRSTLY - and then around ads

Make a LIST and stick to it.  Now I realize many of us hunt clearance as well - if it is something you will use, get it at a cheaper price.

Make a BUDGET and stick to it.  It may mean that you rethink how you shop.  You may not be able to buy all the things you used to buy - change happens and we do what is necessary.

PLAN you trips - make them count.  No running out for one thing.  Make the rounds and do all shopping and trips at one time.  Gas is also an expenditure.

Buy store brands when you can.  Many name brands and store brands are the same - same manufacturer - just different labels.  Give things a try.

Avoid as many convenience foods as POSSIBLE.  Yes, it is nice to have some things on hand for those busy days - but try to stay away from them.  They often cost more and have nasty ingredients.

Get RAINCHECKS when possible if the store is out.  Many places still offer those and you can get the cheaper price later

Use store cards and coupons when you can.  I know they aggravate many of us (the tracking of things), but they do save money.  They may also offer points for money back or for discounts on gas.

DON'T shop hungry!!!!  You WILL buy more - trust me!

Buy in SEASON as much as possible.  Those things will often be cheaper and fresher

Think about using a DIFFERENT store - read the ads and look at other options.  It could save you dollars.

AVOID the stores tricks to get you to spend.  Endcaps often have impulse items they want you to buy.  Eye level items are often fancy packages to entice (but they cost more).  Look high and low.  Avoid temptation.

Make SNACKS at home - try to stay away from all the junk food.

Mainly - just think.  Be courteous and only buy what you need to add to your pantry - not to hoard.  Use what you buy and learn new recipes - easy recipes - to make your food budget stretch as far as possible.

I saw this today, and thought it was pretty interesting.  No need to panic with those TP purchases.  We don't need to see that problem again!!  TP isn't imported (granted maybe some of their supplies might be).
Just don't go crazy.

So there you have it - a good week of looking out for our homes and families, by taking care of our pantries.  We still CAN cut costs and EAT WELL.

Shop SMART!
Have a great weekend.  Have a beautiful day!
