OUT? - Never fear - Make it!

 Good chilly Wednesday morning!  Chilly day here again.  No frost in my area last night.  Some outer areas did get it though.
Yesterday was the outdoor luncheon.  Well, on my way there - it started sleeting!  Yep.  Then sun popped out for a minute after getting there, and then it poured rain and got much colder (only rain received in Oct. - go figure).  Thank goodness for the shelter house!  We did have a good time & pizza and goodies, but it was so cooooold.  I met a couple people I didn't really know, and that was a definite meant to meet for one of them.  Some people just show up in our lives when it is meant to be (or we show up in theirs).  That is a whole other story!!

Today let us talk a bit about some easy things to make when you run out.  We can make so many things at home, yet we tend to go for convenience.  We are all guilty of that.  I know I am.
I like knowing how to make things myself.  Sometimes (often) the homemade version is even better.


STIR FRYE SAUCE
Easy-peasy!  This is simple but makes a tasty sauce for stir fry veggies/meat.  Use on any meal you would normally use store bought sauce.  Raises the level of taste!  I have used this often - as the sauces at the store just cost too much IMO.

HOMEMADE MAYO

Super easy.  You can play around with this and add other ingredients for a different 'flavor'.  This is just so easy and really does taste good.
*I use whatever olive oil I have on hand

It really is easy and good.  G used to like this better than store bought - unless we were lucky enough to have had pure maple syrup.

No problem - make your own SLOPPY JOE
This is how I make sloppy Joe here at home.  Have made my own for years.  Now I also use a good dash of Worcestershire sauce too - gives it a nice tang.
Actually, I don't really measure anything - LOL.  That is me.   I have made it so many times, that I can just add ingredients and know it will be yummy.
This does however, give a good base to start.

We will continue to add recipes over time on 'how to' make your own.  It sure can save time and money.

  1. Cute picture this morning! I have made sloppy joes from scratch for ever. And back in the day I made my own syrup. I am also guilty of going for conveniences when I can.

      Sloppy joe is just so easy and it tastes so much better than the canned mix.
      I think we are all guilty a lot!!

  3. That's how I make sloppy Joes too! Cook burger in instant pot; drain grease; add ketchup - mustard - brown sugar. Put on slow cook mode . Serve.

      It is also good served over rice or pasta, as well. I have done that too.

  4. I used to make my own sloppy joe sauce too for my kids because it had fewer additives in it . That stir-fry sauce looks tasty and it will be healthier than the store-bought one. I'm gonna try it soon! Glad you had a good time at your shin-dig. Yesterday my little granddaughter was watering "her" berries and while she was looking for some to pick, she said "Blueberries, where are you?" 2 year olds are so funny. Dee/NY

  5. I always think a basic sloppy Joe recipe can be the base for a lot. It can go Italian, Mexican, Asian, Indian who knows what type of meal it finishes up as, all depending on what you feel like and what other ingredients you have in your cupboard !!!!!!
    Today I processed two boxes on onions that my son was given. They were huge and a bit dry, so a lot of the outer layers went to the chickens, but I lightly fried them with garlic and then froze in bags. 15 in all. It will take a few days for the onion smell to wear off my hands.

    1. I agree - it also good with a topping of cornbread and baked! I have done that too.
      That is a lot of onions. Yum. They will be good this winter.
      Try rubbing your hands/fingertips over a stainless steel butter knife or something else stainless. It helps remove the smell.

    Well, finally cooler temps are coming to Phoenix! At long last. Of course, today is 96, but in a few days the highs will be in the 60’s. It won’t stay that low but a few days of cool air will be welcome. Yeah! Thank you for the Mayo recipe! I want to make my own! Hilogene in Az.

  7. Sleet? Say isn't so! The Farmer said we may get frost soon. Our privacy fence seems to protect our gardens some. He was out covering some things he didn't want to get bitten by the cold when our mechanic showed up. This young man works for a trucking company and does work on the side to bless people. I may have already told you this. Anyway, if we had not moved to Lizton back in the early '90's and Erin went to TriWest High School where she met the mechanic's dad, she would not have a car to drive. Desperate for a car with little money to spend, she posted on Facebook a need for transportation and this fellow decided to sell his work car at the same time. Fast forward, she is driving the "beater with a heater". I told her it takes a confident person to drive an older car, in this case a 1998 Toyota Corolla. My neighbor called all this a coincidence but I don't believe in such, as I believe the Father blesses us with His plan. That's like you meeting some people who "just show up" in your life. We are all here for a reason.

    I have a sloppy joe recipe that I used when the girls were young, and they still use it. I tried Manwich one time and was very disappointed. Homemade is ever so much better.

    We went to Costco today and Erin went with us. We also stopped at Fresh Thyme and they had boneless, skinless chicken breasts for the same price as Costco and there was a $2 off coupon on each package. She bought some and I bought some to make dog food (per the vet's instructions for the boys' food as they have heart conditions). We had a good time shopping and trying to keep track of the Farmer. He has a tendency to get distracted and go off to look at all sorts of things. ha!

    2. Yep - it sleeted 2X while out yesterday. I got the tomatoes covered as much as possible for tonight - they are calling for widespread frost - but picked all the outer fringes not covered.
      Cool story about the car. Yes, we come to people at certain times for a reason - I believe that too.
      Had a gal sit with us (old friends) who I remembered from school - but didn't know. Really none of us did. We all got to talking and she mentioned she couldn't eat meat right now. One thing led to another and we found out she has been diagnosed stage 3 pancreatic cancer recently. Well, we all talked and asked her what she thought about prayer. Needless to say our little group prayed for her right there, and will continue to carry her in prayer. We were there and she set with people she didn't really know for a reason.
      i haven't been to Fresh Thyme in a long while - need to go again. Sounds like a fun day to me.

  8. I see so many recipes for oriental meals that call for sesame oil -- not something I keep in my pantry, as I'd rarely use it. What would you suggest as an alternate oil to use in place of sesame?

    1. Yes, most call for it. I am not a fan of it by itself at all. But I keep a small bottle on hand and keep it in the frig. It has lasted me forever. It has a distinct taste - so I am not sure what would replace it easily.

  10. I don't think I've ever bought a bottle of the oriental sauces. Mom made her own, and I never think of it. I do use brown sugar rather than honey, and a little cornstarch to thicken it.
    I've made homemade sloppy joes before too, but I'll admit to being lazy and using the packets of spices more often than not. It's the same with gravy mixes - I could make my own but generally don't bother as the packet takes just a few minutes.

    1. I have been guilty of buying oriental seasoning sauces - but homemade is so simple.
      I don't really see any difference in time with sloppy joe homemade and packet. It is so easy and the taste is just yummy. I know many who use the mixes too.

  11. Here in the tristate area (of nyc) Sloppy Joe's are a triple decker cold cut sandwich with cheese, cole slaw and Russian dressing! (turkey is my favorite) I think the closest we have here to your sloppy joe is a chopped cheese, which doesn't have tomato sauce.

    2. Never heard of that being called a sloppy joe before - but I have never been to that area. It has always been the ground beef mix here. Have you ever seen Manwich of the grocery shelves? That is something you can add to ground beef to get sloppy joe as we make it.
      Your sandwich sounds very yummy - but we would probably call that a club of some kind.
      Odd how different regions have different things.
