Learning to Make Do - My Way!

Hello all, and happy Cinco de Mayo!  Funny how it fell on taco Tuesday as well!  LOL!
I hope you are all well and safe.
It is a cool morning and damp.  We had rain over night, and I heard some thunder a couple times.  We are expecting more rain later on today and tonight.  Things sure are green and growing.  A couple of the peonies started popping open yesterday.  Sunday, I had my first hummingbird of this season!
It is 59* at the moment and the sun is peeking out.  Not going to get a whole lot warmer today.

I have always tried to make do and use things in new ways.  Lately I have had a couple of successes I thought I would share.
I put up my May and summer patriotic door decor and flags.  We have Memorial Day this month and the in a short while it will be July 4th - Independence Day.  So, I have been doing some patriotic decor.
I had purchased a large front door decoration last fall and was trying to figure out how to attach to door.
My door is black wrought iron and the frame on the decor was black as well.  Well, I had nothing black to attach it.
I only had white zip ties long enough to attached and they just glared white!
I attached with them - then I got the permanent marker out and colored the ties!  It worked.  You can see then slightly up close - but not from any distance.  If there is a will there is a way.

My older hummingbird feeder had lost a feeding flower - it fell off and broke when cleaning last fall.  Feeders are not cheap, even simple ones!  I had one for the kitchen window/stoop and I put one on the porch as well.  The birds know where they are every year.  So, for the one on the porch, I improvised.  I didn't want ants or bees getting in it - so I just covered that one feeding port with black electrical tape.  There are 3 other ports to eat from.
You can see on the right side - no flower, but tape.  There are other places to feed, and all is good for another year!  (I like this one because they can land and sit)

After making the t-shirt blankie for my niece, I had a lot of scraps left.  I used nice sections of the fronts and most backs for the blanket - but still had a lot of pieces.  I cut those into squares and will add to my hanky basket.  They would also have made great cleaning rags.  I just couldn't throw away useful material!

I leave dry food out back for the kitties all day. It is under a little table to keep rain off of it.  Well, if you have ever had food out long, you know it attracts ants - no fun for eating.  I tried several methods people had mentioned and none really worked.  I came up with my own.  I put down a foil pie pan, add some water and set their food dish in it.  The food dish is just a bit smaller than the bottom of the pan.  (feeds multiple cats).  Ants do not cross the water!!!!  It works perfectly.  I also have a smaller dish in the drive for other cats, and I do the same with it.  It sits in a dish of water a bit bigger than the feed dish.  I change the water every morning, as it accumulates crumbs and bits.
No ants!

Just a couple ideas on making do.  When you don't want to go out and buy something new or don't want/need to make a trip out to just do a simple task - get creative.
Hope it gives someone incentive to just get a little creative and make do.

Have you done any creative fixes lately?  I just love hearing the things people do to save money and things.
Have a fantastic day!!!!!!

  1. I really like your door hanging and you did a great job coming up with a way to hang it and have it look good.
It is supposed to rain all day here which we really need so I can't complain.
    Have a great week Cheryl.

    1. Thanks - I just thought it made a statement.
Turned cloudy here - rain coming soon.
      Have a good one.

  2. My biggest make-do item continues to be my mailbox door. One screw that attaches the door to the bottom side of the mailbox broke months ago. I found a screw that fit and a blue plastic nut/jacket and got it together. But every time the mailman opens the box it loosens. I go out with my screwdriver every day when I get my mail.
Last week I bought what I thought were the right metal hex nuts at Home Depot (overwhelming selection in that aisle). When I opened them I could see they were wrong. I returned them yesterday and bought a home assortment kit at Ace Hardware. I’ll wait until the weekend when I know I’ll have all day Sunday (no mail) to try it. It is so tight getting my fingers under the mailbox with the door in the way to even get anything attached. Barbara M.

    1. I would gladly buy a new mailbox but my dad attached this one in a convoluted way and also there is a shrub growing around it (which I have cut back but it is still not very accessible). Thanks dad!

    2. Good thinking on finding a new way. We do what we need to do! My box is now attached to the wooden pole with a bungy cord! I will get a new one at some point.
Silly how the little things get put off. It would be tough for you since dad placed it.

  3. Doesn't it feel good to MacGyver a task? The brings more pleasure than buying something new. The flowers are pretty in the pot. Haven't filled my porch pots yet. With 250th anniversary of the US, I think I will put out my patriotic wreath instead of swapping them out a couple of times. Need to get a few more things from Dollar Tree.

Super good idea of putting the kitty dishes in water. The ants would help themselves and generally make a mess.

It has started raining again. Probably have light rain all day. That was one strong thunderstorm last night. We got right at one inch of rain.

Love the picture of the embroidery!

    1. Good way to look at it - MacGyver! Those are the only flowers I have put out so far. It is shielded by the porch roof, so far that is it. I need to get some other things. I have a door hanging on the other door as well - red/white/blue and I have 2 patriotic yard flags. I will use them for the next couple months - yes, because of the 250th.
Rain will be here soon, I am sure. Got out and voted in the dry weather thank goodness. I just heard thunder a couple times and must have slept through the rest.

  4. We have about six hummers that constantly come to our yard to feed. We have two feeders that have been fixed many times over to extend their use. We call one the “dine-in” feeder (because the hummers can sit and feed) and the other is the “drive-thru” feeder (because they can’t sit). The cost of feeders have certainly gone up but, then, so has everything. Jenny

    1. They are such a joy to watch and I look so forward to their return every year. I like that - 'dine in' and 'drive thru'! Too cute.
Just a simple plastic one is very costly around here. I finally had to retire my red glass 'bottle' one - as it just got to be impossible to clean thoroughly. Nothing really worked.

  6. I have a MacGyver story. We rented a condo in Costa Rica once and discovered that the refrigerator door was broken. The management company sent over a repairman who spoke very little English although his comprehension was pretty good. He tried everything to fix it and nothing worked. The correct part was in San Jose...an 8 hour drive in each direction. Finally, he improvised something. I don't remember what it was, but it worked. As I was asking him about it when he finished--and it worked--he looked at me and grinned. "MacGyver" was all he said. I wonder if they ever did get the right part!

  7. I think my hummingbird must have died. I put out the feeder and one day I thought I saw a bird, but whatever it was, moved fast and then gone... and nothing more. I read online that the birds can live up to almost 10 years (the kind I have). Every year I've seen my bird sitting in the same place on the same branch watching me, but not this year. Now, nobody. :( I tell myself it's early days.

My May wreath is grapevine with a light green bow and pink roses. For July there will be red white and blue ribbons, and some little flags to stick in the flower pot by the steps. :) I took a risk and planted my few pots of annuals last week. The frost did not get them. Next jobs will be some veggie seeds in pots, and fertilize the daffodil bulbs while I can still see where they are!

Good job with your door decor, Cheryl.
Chilly but sunny here today. It'll be hot soon enough. :)

    1. Hopefully it is just too soon. If not, I bet another one will find it. Don't give up.
I just have the one pot of petunias planted so far. No garden planted - just so darn chilly and wet. I can't get in the mood with this weather.
yes mam, it will be HOT before you know it and we will be complaining!
