Frugal Happenings as of 12/24

Hi y'all!  I am posting a couple days late because of all the holiday celebrations.

I hope you all had a lovely holiday with your families and friends.  We got to see many of our relatives and enjoyed the visits.
I can't believe how incredibly blessed we are and how many seem to love us!  We received so many wonderful gifts.
My goodness we were blessed with 4 GC's, fruits and nuts, lotto tix, family pictures, many specialty foods (in wonderful re-usable storage containers), homemade candies and cookies, smell pretties for the house, clothes,  and on and on.  BLESSED BEYOND BELIEF

My frugal week (last week):
  • Wrapped the remainder of our gifts with supplies I had on hand.  Still  enough for a couple more years!!!!
  • Made a batch of peach pie moonshine!  This made 7 1/2 quarts.  Will post recipe later if anyone is interested! (Many used in gift baskets)
  • Made from scratch cookies
  • Received a gift in the mail from a friend on the coast (pretties and homemade fudge to die for!)
  • All laundry in cold water and dried most by hanging in the basement.
  • Cleaned all the wood floors (will probably do again this week since company is over)
  • Waxed the kitchen cabinets
  • Washed windows - have to take advantage of those 55* days in mid-winter!  Used homemade cleaner and newspaper
  • Received 3 bags of kitty treats and some homemade cookies from an old neighbor who stopped by for a visit
  • All meals from home
  • No groceries bought
Meals last week:
Tomato soup and grilled cheese
Home canned cabbage soup - added sausage and leftover veggies from fridge
Dirty rice with beef and salad
Leftover cabbage soup and sandwiches
Fried chicken and side salad
Meat and cheese with crackers and a salad
Pizza flavored baked spaghetti

We went from sub-zero wind chills and ice last weekend to almost 70* yesterday.  Quite the roller coaster on weather.  Cooler this week and then back up to 50* after New Years.  I figure every warm nice day we get - just puts us one day closer to spring!!!!

How did your holiday celebrations go?  Any gifts that help with your frugal way of living?
Check in and say hello.  I love hearing from everyone!

Blessings to all!

  1. Hi there Cheryl ~ Like you, we experienced a death in the family this year. My mom died Nov 29th, so we had an 'empty chair' Christmas. Still, we gathered and shared memories and laughter. Everyone seemed pleased with their gifts...it was one of those years when I just nailed it! So much fun.

Didn't buy groceries, other than a ham which will go the distance. HaHa
    Baked from scratch cookies.
Hubby is in a sling, so he's not driving which saves on gas and makes us wonder just how much driving is truly necessary.
Unfortunately, there were lots of errands related to mom's passing, so that probably ate up the gas savings. Guess it all works out in the end.

Making plans to save more in 2017, especially at the grocery store. There is still too much food waste in our home and I'm determined to "nip it in the bud".

I want to take a moment to thank you for your blog. You share so many money saving ideas and I'm really grateful for that. I personally think it's a good time to hunker down.

    1. Hello Mindy
First, I am so sorry for the loss of your Mother. It is horrible to lose our love ones, but it just seems so much worse around holidays. God bless you and your family and comfort you through this horrible time.
I am glad you and your family made the best of it and had a nice Christmas. Good going on "nailing it"!!!!

I think the same about gasoline. I have been staying home a lot more lately, and that tank sure does last a lot longer.

Thank you so much for your kind words on the blog. It makes my day when someone says they 'got something' from it. That is my goal to share and to learn from each other.

I hope we can all have a good 2017. I agree with the idea of hunker down and stock up and save money.

Hopefully we will all share and learn in 2017.
      God bless.

  2. Hi Cheryl, I completely spaced off putting up my Frugal Friday Wrap up so I am just doing a 2 week version through the 30th. ;) I t sounds like you had a lovely time with friends and family and I am so glad that you were so blessed!

Mindy, I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. My prayers are with you. Losing my uncle recently made me really take time to appreciate my family all the more and to cherish each moment we have together.

    Be blessed!
