Frugal Happenings 9/3

Hello my friends.  Hope you are all well and that those of you in the U.S. are getting to enjoy an extra long weekend this week.  I hope you all have a nice time planned with family or friends on this last 'unofficial' weekend of summer.
It seems one weekend is just the same as another in my world.  Three day weekends happen every week now that we are retired! LOL

This past week, we got to keep the AC often off more than on - although we did have a couple days it was truly needed.  Friday we never got out of the 60's and tomorrow it is supposed to reach 90*.  We have a storm coming in tomorrow night, and then the temps are supposed to mellow out back into the low 70's all week.

My frugal week:
  • Made a loaf of beer bread - it was quite good
  • Cleaned out the frig again and consolidated bottles and jars of stuff
  • Harvesting and eating garden produce - picked zucchini, bell peppers, jalapenos, cabbage, tomatoes, and broccoli
  • Prepared 8 pints of kraut to ferment
  • Worked on receipts for the month.  I managed to average $25 week on groceries for August - not to shaggy
  • Stopped and filled up the tank with gas, as prices had already gone up.25/gallon.  I had used less than 1/2 tank in August - but I wanted to fill up just in case.  Got to save .20/gallon with my discount
  • Picked more grapes
  • Organized the pantry AGAIN and worked on the over flow downstairs.  It gets so messy, so easily (I guess I need to work neater on a daily basis!)
  • Froze the balance of the stew I made on Sunday - (I see a big potpie in the future)
  • Ground herbs I dried last week
  • Dehydrated cabbage leaves and broccoli stems/leaves
  • Been working on a list for Sam's - keep putting that trip off!
  • Used all leftovers for breakfasts or lunches
  • Cut G's and my hair
  • Stopped at Christian thrift store not realizing they were having a 75% off sale.  Most things are a $1 everyday any way!  I got a sturdy wooden rack and 3 metals storage trays for $1 TOTAL.  (They are making room for lots of new stock)

Coogy had to check everything out!  I ended up storing 20 - 1 lb. boxes of pasta on the wooden shelf (downstairs) and more on top.  The racks will hold other grocery items in stockpile
  • Stopped at Kroger to look at markdowns.  Got 9 cans of chopped peaches for .22 can!  Also got 10 cans (6.5 oz.) of mushroom stems/pieces for .39 ea. YAY FOR ME!
These will be great for the winter mixed with other fruit, on cereal, mixed in homemade ice cream, cooked in oatmeal....................the list goes on.

Meals this week:
Stew 2X - with beer bread
Dirty rice mixed with sausage and zucchini
Quesadillas
BBQ wings, steamed broccoli and sliced tomatoes
Salad and beef stick/cheese with crackers
Smoked sausage/cabbage and fried smashed potatoes
***************************************************

It was kind of a quiet week, but in my mind those are the best kind.
It still absolutely amazes me how awesome it is to walk out in the yard and PICK groceries.  I have been around gardens my whole life, but I am still amazed by that.  God is so good!

How was your week?  What did you do to stay frugal?

Thank you for visiting this week and thank you for all the kind comments I received on posts.  I have a great group of gals/guys following this humble little blog.

May your upcoming week be blessed in every way.
Stay healthy, safe, strong, and frugal dear friends.  God bless and keep you in His protective arms.

  1. I wish we had better thrift stores here in our area. You made some great finds! Then 22 cents a can of peaches -what a find! Great shopping this week Cheryl!

    1. Vickie we don't have many that are even worth going to - too expensive. Just a couple that I like.
Yeah, couldn't pass that up and they are dated 9/2019! No brainer.
      Have a good one.

  2. Thank you for the extra long weekend good wishes. My Dad is down here from Illinois and we are going to spend the extra days with him. Your weekly grocery budget of $25 is excellent! That's only $100 a month, which is so great. Gas has gone up here too because of Hurricane Harvey, up about 30 cents a gallon right now. I hope it does not climb higher. One of the Walmarts here has already run out of gas. What a great deal on those peaches! I love bargains like that. I hope you have a good wee, Cheryl. :)

    1. Belinda I am so glad you get to spend time with your Dad. ENJOY to the fullest.

My grocery bill was low because of our garden and we have a great stockpile.
Have a great visit and a great week.

  3. Wow, those are great canned peaches prices. Your thrift store finds look very useful and stylish.
At our commissary, I found Del monte canned tomatoes, in 3 varieties, for .25 a can. I got 12 of each. With coupons and a sale, I bought lots of bags of Nabisco cookies for .50 a bag. The grands will eat them for snacks and the ones that pack school lunches will like them for that.
My September plans are to cook at home a lot, sew a lot and just stay home a lot. We'll see how it goes.

    1. Rhonda what a deal on the tomatoes!!! I would have stocked up even more. Good job.
That is a great deal on the cookies - you will be the favorite grandma!

I hope you are successful on your Sept. plans. It is a great plan, we should all strive for.
      Have a good one.

  4. Cheryl, sounds like a really positive week. My frugals are still purging as my house has sold and I will be moving to FL the end of October. I have to eat down the freezer (sold it to the realtor as the new owners don't want it), so that is saving money.

I was invited to friends' house 2 nights in a row, and came home with leftovers - fried rice and General chicken, mashed potatoes, fresh green beans, onions and pepper and steak. Plus they sent me home with lots of fresh tomatoes from the farm 2 doors down. And I had made hamburgers (2 left) and a roast (all of that left, as my invitation came right after I put it on). So this week - eating out of the fridge.

I have a huge bag of spices that I am not taking with me packed up for a family who will accept them, even though they have been opened (don't know how long I will stay with my brother before getting my own apt), but never "dipped" into - I tend to pour in pinch cups and am pretty good about sight-measuring.

Even plates and dishes I am not taking so have packed up the dessert dishes for my supervisor's church who do the Christmas Tea, and lots of other functions throughout the year. Hopefully they will be very useful.

I am avoiding deals and thrift shops because it will mean that I have to pack it and pay for it to get to FL when I go.

    Have a great week.

    1. Norma it sounds like you have a great plan.
WOW how nice to get all that food from friends and to have so many leftovers. You are set for the week.
It sure will be the end of Oct. before you know it. I bet you are getting excited for a 'new' start. I am happy for you.
Very thoughtful to give things to those who can use them.
      Blessings my friend.

  5. Cheryl, as always, great finds! That wooden shelf says jams and jellies to me! I think the stores in your area really do price things well. I like the one Sharp Shopper we have over in the next valley, where I can stock up on canned goods. 3/$1 on some apricot halves were just the right size to bring to work for a snack, even came with a flip top lid. Those lasted a year, now to find some more bargains.

Not canning much this year, think we missed cabbage season and have eaten almost all the tomatoes. Made a big pot of beef vegetable noodle soup last night and baked banana bread, apple cake, vanilla jam cake, and leftover rice I breaded and fried for breakfast yesterday. Had TGMan pick up the milk and bread.

Friend gave me a big bunch of grapes so will enjoy those at work, too.

    1. Ellen, Kroger just has lots of markdowns and manager specials for some reason. They don't keep back stock at all and any overage becomes clearance. Manager specials are things they have just decided they won't be selling any more.
      Their loss and my gain!

Sounds like you had a fun day of cooking and baking. It all sounds so good. I keep thinking about chili - it's been a while.
Never head of breaded rice - that sounds yummy and interesting.
Enjoy your leftovers and your FREE grapes!

    1. Mama I thought my thrift store items were a deal too. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Same with Kroger - I only go there for clearance and markdowns - very seldom buy other groceries there.

I am glad to help. Blessings.

    1. Kroger has some great deals - you just have to watch for them.
If I want dirty rice in a hurry (I do not plan my menus) - I always have Aldi brand dirty rice box mix on hand. It is so good and you add meat and it's really a meal.

I do make a big batch from scratch a couple times a year -(it makes a ton). I will make a post of that real soon. I PROMISE!
      Have a good one.

  8. Such great deals! The only frugal things I did, besides stay home were:
Pick up 10 pounds of ground beef on sale (I heard a story on the radio this morning about how Hurricane Harvey has affected Texas cattle - figure the prices will only go up).
Topped off the gas tank. We were down to 3/4 of a tank and the price was the same as a week ago. So I figured it wouldn't hurt to fill er up.

    1. Cheri those were both very smart things to do. Texas is cattle country and I wonder how many head didn't make it. I well imagine beef prices will soar.
Gas prices are already going up - so that was smart too.
We need to be wise and make good decisions in these uncertain times.
      Blessings

  10. Sounds like a great frugal week!
Your kitty is so cute checking out the shelving.
Thanks for the tip on the Kroger clearance. I was able to find the peaches, fruit and pineapple for .44, so I added 10 cans to my pantry.
