It Does so Much....

Happy mid-week to all.   Today I will mention some of the many things that we can do with a single product.  DAWN dish soap.  I think this is kind of an American thing and may not be a thing overseas.    This is a very popular dish soap here, as it is gentle and does many things.

Of course it does a great job on cleaning our dishes and pots and pans.  I even add a bit of water and a bit of vinegar to my solution.  I don't need it full strength to work great, and the vinegar just gives a bit of added shine to glassware.
  • It is great as an emergency hair cleanup.  The kids in something terribly messy, or hubs hair gets greasy working on vehicles.  Whatever the need it helps remove GUNK!
  • Add just a little (couple tsp.) to homemade weed killer.  It helps the week killer adhere to the plants
  • Works wonders on cleaning outdoor furniture
  • Use once about every 4 weeks as a hair product remover.  It helps get rid of any buildup
  • Mix a couple teaspoons of Dawn to a spray bottle of water - shake - and spray just about any type of insect - and BOOM they are dead.  I works great on ants and box elder bugs around here
  • Give your pets a flea bath - works great
  • Add a drop to a quart of water and use as a window cleaner
  • Helps find leaks in things.  The air mattress, kids pool, tires, etc.  Smear it on and watch for bubbles.
  • Fixes a squeaky hinge
  • Works great to clean kids pools
  • If you get in poison ivy - come in and wash with cool water and Dawn.  The Dawn helps to cut the oily residue left by the plant on your body, which is what causes the rash
  • Great for cleaning grill racks.  Place racks in a black trash bag with 1/2 C Dawn and a gallon water.  Let it sit at least 10 hours or overnight - and easy-peasy cleaning
  • In a dire pinch, add just a tiny squirt to your laundry if you run out of detergent
  • I use a sink full of soapy water with a little baking soda added to clean store produce.  Washes off all the wax they use to shine up things!  Rinse well
  • I have even used to wash my hair.  Hey when you are in a pinch - there is a way!
You have any good uses for Dawn?  Love learning new ideas and tricks - to use one product many, many ways.  It sure does save a bundle of cleaning supplies, and it is gentle on the environment and body.
Look forward to your ideas.

Have a great day!

  1. I love Dawn as well, you have lots more ideas, thank you. I will definitely use your cleaning grill rack idea. I used dawn and a scrub brush and it was too much work ;). Hilogene in Az

  2. Good morning! Dawn dish detergent is the best clothes stain remover ever!!! It gets out even set in stains. It gets out pretty much anything. A tiny bit, worked into the stain before washing in the machine is amazing. For tough stains (like dried mustard), work a little baking soda into the fabric with Dawn applied first. And not to be gross, but years ago, when Grandma Griff soiled her favorite nightgown, I soaked it in warm water with about 1 T. of Dawn overnight (in the washer), then ran the machine with 2 rinse cycles. It even works on stains from a pellet or wood stove (the black soot), or clay stains from the garden by doing the same.

Our pellet stove kicked on this morning! Can you believe that? By this afternoon, the a/c will kick on. Craziness. But adding solar means our electric bill is only $16 with summer a/c.

For AZ shoppers, you'll want to get to Safeway early today, which is Senior Day (extra 10% off). Pork sirloin chops are 97 cents per lb., fresh blueberries are $2.97 for an 18 oz. pkg. (limit 2), cantaloupe and personal size watermelons are $1.27 ea. (limit 2, save the seeds for your garden), there are digital offers for 32 oz. Lucerne cheese, brick or shredded, at $4.97 ea. and Signature Select frozen pizzas at $1.97 ea. (both limit of 2). Lots of coupons. On Friday (aka $5 Friday) fresh strawberries will be 2/$5 on 1 lb. pkgs., no limit.

Hubs talked to the neighbor yesterday (whose animal fences are 30 ft. onto our property) and found out 2 things: the court gave him an extension for getting the house up for sale until the end of the summer, and it turns out Poppy is a Blue Heeler-Australian Shepherd mix. He has *more* puppies there. A new litter.
    Blessings to all! --Elise

    1. Need to add that if you are in AZ and have a Basha's nearby, it's also Senior Day and their strawberries are 99 cents per 1 lb. pkg., limit 4. Better price. Also on sale there are broccoli, cauliflower an tomatoes on the vine for 88 cents per lb., 5/$5 on canned veggies and tuna, $1.99 ea. on Kellogg's cereals (limit 2), and Dollar Deals on chicken thighs or drumsticks ($1 lb.), S & W canned beans, Van de Camp's canned beans, canned Rotel diced tomatoes, canned olives, Hunt's tomato paste, Food Club mustard and Bar S franks. Italian, yellow or grey squash and all leaf lettuce is 99 cents per lb. or 99 cents each. 88 cents per lb. on jalapenos and tomatillos. Add avocado at 4/$5 (with onion and cilantro) and make a big batch of Verde sauce!

And remember, if you get salsa or Verde stains on your clothes... use Dawn to get those stains out! --Elise

    3. Lots more berries in my fridge. :-)
I found out the last time I made crock pot jam that using a little Dawn dish soap on the berry stained towels afterwards took even blueberry stains out in one wash! --Elise

  3. Dawn is an excellent product which can be used for all the things you list. Costco has their own version of Dawn and it actually isn't too bad. Years ago I used nothing but lemon Joy to wash dishes.

We got three little 12 drop "showers" this morning. Maybe more will fall...

We had a nice shower last evening, and then like you this morning about a dozen drops!

Hump day! And it's gonna be a toasty one.

Dawn is amazing. I use it as part of my shower magic potion. I warm 1\4 cup white vinegar and add 1\4 cup Dawn. I take along 2 TB of baking soda. I hold the mixture over the shower floor and stir in the baking soda. Then I cover the shower walls with the foam it creates. I rub it all over and leave it overnight. It does a great job of getting all the body oil scuz off with a hot rinse. I use a deck brush on the floor to get in all those little bumpies on the fiberglass bottom.

We also use it a couple of times in spring to drench our arborvitae. Bagworms be gone!! They'll destroy it in one season.

    1. Wonderful tips. Nice to know on the shower. That stuff is so great for bugs of all types. I am going to try it this year if the squash bugs show up. (LOL - IF?)

  5. I've seen Dawn in our stores but never purchased it (I'm a Sunlight girl), but with all of these uses I think I'll grab a bottle. My grill could use a good cleaning.
I have heard it was good to rid one of bugs. We get maple bugs that cling to sides of house in mass numbers and Dawn is always recommended.

    1. Yes, you need some just for other types of jobs. It is a great stain lifter as well. It will work wonders on those bugs.

  6. Debby reminded me... hate scrubbing out your bathtub? Fill it with warm water, 2-3 cups white vinegar and 1/4-1/2 cup Dawn. Let that soak overnight (up to 24 hours). Before draining, take a handled scrubber brush and lightly scrub where soap scum had accumulated before draining the tub and rinsing.

Also for bottom of the oven burnt spills, soak a few washcloths in a bucket of hot water with at least 1 T. Dawn, squeeze a little (don't wring them out) and lay over the burnt mess at the bottom of your oven. Close the door and let sit overnights. Most (or all) of the mess can be wiped away in the morning. Rinse with clean water before turning the oven back on. --Elise

    1. Do you use regular vinegar or the stronger cleaning vinegar?

  7. I use it to clean the vinyl siding and skirting on the house. Cuts through the grime but doesn't harm the plants underneath.
Kills yellow jacket wasps. I used it diluted in a spray bottle when we had the infestation last year. Used a very dilute solution in a spray bottle to clean up the mess from squashed wasps on the painted walls and on the laminate floor.

    1. Hadn't thought of it as an outside house cleaner, Frances. Thank you! Also, I'm amazed at how many are saying it makes a good bug spray. I'll have to try that! --Elise

    2. I love it for cleaning outdoors. I had a couple problem (stained looking) spots on vinyl siding. I sprayed a solution - let it set a bit and cleaned it right off.
I just love it for bugs.

  10. Okay... I really AM staying on topic here, because Dawn is the best for getting plastic containers clean. It leaves no grease or film behind. Other dish detergents I've used always left behind grease or film on plastics. That said, any crafters out there may want to check out the TSV at QVC today. And no, they don't pay me. LOL! It's a 13 piece set of nest-able Locknlock containers for $26.98 [free shipping] that are ideal for craft supply storage. Lots of colors to choose from. --Elise

  13. Dawn and water also kill the thousands of Box Elder bugs that invade us every spring and summer. It does not ruin plants or trees or grass when sprayed.

    God bless.

  14. Dawn helps to removed sticky labels on jars. Tommy now is a Dawn user. I bought Dawn and discovered it was not the original Dawn, so had to order it in 2020. I got six small bottles and still have lots because I use so little to get the job done. I have made a believer of him as far as using just a drop or two to begin with and using more if needed.
I think I was using Joy before I switched to Dawn. It made my hands itch. Dawn is the first ever dish detergent that did not leave a rash, red hands or just itchy.
I made a cleaner for Tommy to use on his car windows with a tsp of Dawn, 1/4 cup vinegar, and about two cups of water. He is amazed at what I use Dawn for around the house.

    1. You are so right about the sticky labels. Thanks forgot to mention that one too.
I just score the label with a knife or prick it and smear a tiny bit of Dawn around the label and let it sit. Usually washes right off.
      It sure is great stuff.
