Hello and happy Sunday to all. Hoping this finds you all well and safe.
It is another chilly morning here in Indy. It is supposed to be dry today - not the case yesterday afternoon. The weather folks sure did story to us last week, when they said a much warmer week to start the month! We had a couple warm days then things went back to normal for this time of the year. We have had and look to have near normal 30's for highs and they are even talking a little of the old "S" word for this week. Good news - spring is only about 39 days away!
Today is Super Bowl Sunday - so if you are watching with family or friends have fun! Eat lots of fun food and stay home and stay safe - there will be crazy people out there.
As for me - no watching football here!
Just been doing odds and ends this week, nothing exciting!- Did some yard clean-up while it was warmer
- Walked the alley and the sidewalks picking up blowing trash after trash day - good exercise
- Made a run to the feed store and stocked up
- While out, I stopped and visited sis. She is back at rehab again. She was having trouble walking (weak) and found out from doc she had a bad UTI causing problems. He also noticed her arm was really bruised. Had x-rays done and her wrist (her right) was broken! She didn't even know it and had been using it regularly for over a week!! Now in a cast and in rehab. She is putting her house up for sale when she gets home - and getting into assisted living.
- Ran into Kroger that same day (a different one than normal) and got the eggs that were on a digital coupon. I am good for a long while now
- Got to air the house 2-3 times
- Cut my hair and colored the roots
- Combined 2 tubes of medicated chap stick. Both were getting close to unusable - so scraped out from one and added to the other. Several uses left now
- Mended 2 pair of jeans with patches
- My neighbor called one day and asked if I wanted some corn pudding! She makes the best I have ever had. I got a nice big piece I ate for snacks over 2-3 days.
- Started washing the baseboards and inside doors
- Eating from home - cooking from scratch - using leftovers
Meals this past week:
Leftover broccoli/meatballs, corn on the cob
Ham/egg/cheese sandwich and some fresh veggies
Kielbasa on bun and salad
Seafood mac and cheese (faux crab) and salad
Chili and crackers 2X
Steamed broccoli/cauliflower, pork chop and some fresh veggie on side
SNACKS - banana milkshake, corn casserole, fruit, nuts
There you have it. Kind of quiet. Blackie has been a bit off this week. He wasn't eating much - not sure if he has another bad tooth or not - he won't let me look. This happens now and then - then he gets back to normal. I have been wetting dry food, squish it and top with gravy and he has been eating - enjoyed some milk too. He wants no canned food. So gradually feeling better. Poor old guy, he just had such a rough life outdoors (w/other cats), that he seems older than he should. So happy he is inside - he probably wouldn't be alive today, had he stayed outside. Bitsy makes sure he sleeps wherever his buddy is. If Blackie sleeps with me - so does Bits. If Blackie is in the living room - so is Bitsy. It is so sweet. They are both curled up on the couch right now!
How was your week? Anyone get any deals? Did you learn anything new this week? My daddy always asked me that! What have you all been up to?
I love that we have had several new people commenting this week. That is fun!
I wish you all health and safety this week. May you all learn something new and try new things.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be the glory for ever and ever. Amen
Philippians 4:19-20
Dear Lord, we ask You to continue to watch over and protect us everyone. Help us all to not feel fear and to know that You are in control. Guide us to learn, to try, to grow and to ask. Help us to stay calm and project that calmness to others in a loving way. Amen
Excellent devotional! What a blessing that the Father shares with us. We can show the love of Yehovah - Help us to stay calm and project that calmness to others in a loving way.
ReplyDeleteBlackie might have some dental issues. Erin's oldest cat Howie has some dental problems as well as kidney issues. He's about 17, she thinks.
It feels good to combine like products instead of throwing out a container.
Heard about the possibility of snow later in the week. Just so it's not heavy and doesn't linger. Not asking for much! ha!
Thanks.
DeleteOh, Blackie had several teeth removed after he came in and he had infection - so I know he has problems. I am just adjusting his food to work for him.
I like combining things - still a lot of use left.
Yep, the nasty S word. Fingers crossed, not too bad.
Have a lovely week.
Prayers for your sister, that she heals and adjusts to her new home.
DeleteThank you Donna. It will take a little while - but I hope not too long before she can get sold and moved.
DeleteSnow means slow allowing for more work on mom's estate. I'm just getting over the annoyance at the time it takes to navigate government websites only to find out that even their agents have difficulty & best to use the postal system after 1.5 hrs on the phone! (Insert swear words here.) Washed walls in the upstairs bathroom & defrosted the chest freezer this past week. Received the 13th season of Call the Midwife from the library. Reading The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams. Spent time hurkle-durkling, my favorite term for 2024. Hosted my cousins for cards & supper, our game of choice being $0.11 rummy. Use it up is the theme in the kitchen: salad with grated kohlrabi from my friend's garden; zucchini (from the freezer) muffins; leftover quinoa/black bean soup; crackers with liver pate; roasted chicken w/ veg. Chicken pot pie is on the schedule today using up leftover chicken & more frozen veg from the freezer. -20C this morning. Winter is not over here.
ReplyDeleteAll the red tape after a death is so frustrating. I feel for you.
DeleteSounds like you accomplished a lot.
I love the use it up theme. No need to waste good food. Your meals all sound good.
Have a great week.
Yesterday was 74, today is supposed to be 44. I hate the drastic temperature changes like that. But I was able to open the windows up twice this week, so that was nice.
ReplyDeleteMy younger cat loves to play and snuggle with the older one. I call him a cranky old man. Sometimes he just wants to be left alone period and he definitely lets the younger one know it. It was rough when we first introduced them, but old man cares for him deeply now.
I went to Kroger to stock up on stuff, but our store was out of the eggs. I'm planning to stay out of stores as much as possible and just rely on Walmart pickup. Saves money as well avoiding people and germs.
The youngest is sick now and he rarely goes out in public except his weekly speech therapy appointment. He's wanted nothing but me to hold him 24/7. We picked up pizza one night since cooking isn't really getting done right now and used a free personal pan pizza with it that my oldest got at school for reading.
Been doing Fetch games while sitting around with him and got a $5 Amazon gift card.
Found a puzzle, a couple of books, and a couple of coloring books at a free little library.
Ordered my mom a phone from Amazon and of course we never have issues, but when I ordered something fairly expensive it got delivered to the wrong house. Surprisingly they brought it over. I used my credit card to order it and she gave me the cash, so I earned a few bucks with the points since I always pay it off and have never paid interest on the card.
I ordered vanilla extract from Amazon, I got a large bottle and it was so much cheaper than getting it from the store.
My oldest’s teacher sent out a sign up list for their Valentine's Day party. I signed up for mini marshmallows which I already had on hand so I didn't have to buy anything extra.
Those temperature extremes get old. I love the warm end.
DeleteKitties are like people - sometimes we just want to be left alone. My older one is about 7 - but his rough life and medical problems outside - make him seem older. He just loves naps!
I hope your baby is feeling a bit better. Poor thing. Glad the people were honest and brought you the phone. You did well.
Kiddos like marshmallows - that will be nice.
Have a good week.
-Avocados are $0.49. I bought 5 on Wednesday and will go back for 5 more Tuesday.
ReplyDelete-I also dig out chapstick dregs when it won't come up. So much buried in the base that it lasts at least 6 weeks! Nope, not flushing those $$ down the toilet.
-Steamed aging carrots for dinner last night and will finish today/tomorrow. No waste!
-Made sliders last night. I bought a dozen clearance whole grain rolls for $1.35 and froze them. Smoked Pulled Pork from the freezer (smoked back in October and vac-sealed in 2 serving portions so we get 3 months out of 2 shoulders!)
-Last night's dinner plan kept us from heading north 14 miles to the BBQ place we love love love-hubster was kinda bummed but said OK.
Blessed Sunday to all! If you party through the game use Uber to get home safely! Your life is worth more than the $$.
Wow, that is cheap. Yes, there was a lot buried in that tube. I couldn't see throwing it out. A toothpick and a little time!
DeleteMmmm the sliders sound good. I sure like using up things - no need to waste good food - that is money!
Wonderful advice.
Have a super week.
Winter is in full glory here. We are an hour west of Toronto and it snowed about 8” late yesterday and through the night. Fortunately it is light and fluffy and so cleaning off the cars was not too hard. I am so thankful for our snow clearing people! Next weekend we expect another big dump. It is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOh yuck! I doubt we get anything like that here -we seem to be in the right spot a lot. I hope you stay in and stay safe and warm.
DeleteYes, winter is still here, no matter hard we wish for spring!
Have a wonderful and safe week.
I finally learnt my mobile phone number off by heart. I have had the same number since before my eldest child (now aged 30!) was born. My phone has always been used just for texting close friends and family, but I am increasingly asked for it for official purposes and the "I can't remember it, sorry," excuse was starting to sound increasingly stupid. I am still determined not to just dish it out willy-nilly though. It will remain on a strict 'need to know' basis!
ReplyDeleteI always have to stop and think HARD when asked. I understand. I am not really a texter much, mainly just for emergencies. Only a couple use it to call me.
DeleteGood for you!!
Have a super week.
Prayers for your sister 🙏
ReplyDeleteSusan
Thank you so much. Bless her heart she will be 94 this spring, I just hate that she has had such a rough couple years.
DeleteHave a blessed week.
Sending prayers for your sister and you. Take care. Joyce
DeleteThank you Joyce. Have a good week.
DeleteWe had a taste of warmer weather but yes, winter is back. Your meals all sound so good. I hope kitty is better soon. It's always so hard when something is going on with them and they can't tell us what. I'm so sorry to hear about your sister. I can't even imagine how hard it is on her to give up living on her own. That is a hard one. But her safety is the important thing. Still so hard though. Prayers going up for her!
ReplyDeleteThe weather sure has been fickle!
DeleteI hope Blackie feels much better soon. He goes through spells. Such a sweety.
Yes, her children were going to make a decision for her - assisted living or her sons - but she came to the decision herself. It is a tough one - but it is going to be the best for her. She needs to be where someone can get to her quickly and she can be safer. Thank you.
Have a special week.
You’ve had a very productive week! Your poor sister…I pray her wrist heals up soon and her house sells quickly so she can get the extra care and attention she needs. I know it must be hard for her, though. And I pray Blackie is feeling better soon, too.
ReplyDeleteI did pretty good! I know, bless her heart. She has had a time of it lately. It was a tough decision - she is a spunky little lady.
DeleteThanks I hope Blackie does better too. Sweet boy.
Have a lovely week.
We've had warm weather here this week, which was really nice except for one rainy day, which we can always use. No Super Bowl Sunday for us here. We are just working on decluttering the house and making a pile for the consignment sale coming up soon. I was able to clean some big sticks around my car this week and really need to get the leaves blown away as I'm afraid of falling in them with my new knee. I'm sorry your sister broke her wrist. I hope she does better in assisted living. Your meal sound delicious and how nice to get to air the house out, I love that.
ReplyDeleteglad you have warmer weather. You seem to stay much warmer than here. Good job on decluttering. I know I need to get back to that. Be careful, wouldn't want you to damage you knee.
DeleteYeah, she didn't even know it was broke - still doing stuff. Then they put a cast on her, and now she has trouble doing stuff. That is her prominent hand.
Have a great week.
We're still having "spring" here - sunny and 65F. I've been working in the yard playing Pick-up-Sticks everywhere. Oh it is grand to be outside! Opened the window, letting sunshine and warm air in. :) Later in the week we're looking at 30s and 40s and rain, so the window will close and the heat will go back on.
ReplyDeleteSorry about your sis, Cheryl. That'll be quite a change for her. You'll probably need to help her weed through her stuff, a big job.
Love the prayer you gave us today. :)
MaryB
So happy to hear you can be outside and do things. I look forward to that a lot more. Warm weather is sure a joy.
DeleteShe is much more a minimalist than me. But still a home full of things. She will need all of us to help.
Thank you.
Have a blessed week.
You had another productive week. You are an inspiration. Sorry to hear about your sister. She has been through the ringer. Our weather here has been crazy... yesterday we had rain, thunder, sleet, freezing rain, ice, and more thunder.
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you. I wish I could do - there is always so much.
DeleteYes, she has been through it - poor gal. I just want her to be healthy and safe.
Yes the weather is crazy and mixed up. Soon we will all be complaining of the heat!
Have a beautiful week.
Prayers for your sisters recovery. Wow she must have a super high pain threshold to not be bothered by her wrist.
ReplyDeleteIt’s good that she has made her own decision to sell and move.
It’s been a busy week for me, and the next one looks much the same. No rest for the wicked as they say. Meals have been prepared and eaten, the highlight was a cheesy vegetable soup served with my own sourdough loaf. Using up the discard have provided some good options as well.
I had a lovely catch up lunch with some friends that had come back to town for a funeral and on the way home called into a different store and picked up some bags of pre-cut veggies for 20 cents. I never look in that section but will do so more often now. I also found some other great deals, it’s a good reminder to not get stuck in a rut and always shop at your “comfort zone store”.
Take care, have a great week, Louise.
Thank you - she is a tough little cookie. Yes, I am glad SHE made the decision.
DeleteYour soup and bread sounds yummy. I bet it was enjoyed by all. Nice to catch up. What a deal on the veggies! Yes, we often need to check in different stores and places - we find some wonderful deals.
Don't over do! have a fantastic week.
I'm sorry to read about your sister. But it's great she came to the decision on her own. Really a gift to her family. From my experience it's the person's attitude about assisted living that makes all the difference.
ReplyDeleteI'm still battling the illness I had last weekend. I thought I was better and ran a bunch of errands one day. Only to find myself wiped out & feeling bad again.
I did find chicken legs for 69 cents per pound. Each package was around 5 pounds. I bought 4 packages. The easiest way to deal with that much chicken is to put a whole package in the instant pot and use the cooked meat in recipes. I do put some cooked legs in the freezer for a quick meal. I thaw then simmer in a sauce and serve with rice.
Thanks. Yes, she has decided it is time, she hates to leave her home, but she is well aware she wants to keep as much freedom as possible. Doesn't want to live with her children.
DeleteSo sorry you are feeling again - or yet. I think that happens a lot - we think we are good - then boom it hits again. Take care of yourself.
That is a great deal on chicken - wowza. So many uses.
Take care and have a good week.
Hi Cheryl. Snow here in NY. Not a lot and it is the slushy type which will freeze tonight. We have a new grandson. He came quite early but is doing great. Our granddaughter considers him to be "her" baby. She was not happy when I held him LOL. She stayed with us for a week while he was in the NICU. Like you, I pick up litter most days when I walk the dog. It really does make a difference.
ReplyDeleteOh snow - what a nasty word. That stuff that freezes is a pain.
DeleteHow sweet she thinks that is her baby and not jealous! Hopefully it continues and she likes him as he grows!! Glad he is well.
Yes just picking up a little here and there makes things look nicer. It amazes how dog walkers we have here, and I never see a one bend over to pick something up.
Have a super week.
I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but please wear gloves when you are picking up the trash. My godmother was always picking up garbage on her walk, and at some point she picked up a serious blood infection from something. She was on antibiotics for a very long time.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like your sister is making a wise decision to make the transition to assisted living. She also must have an incredible pain tolerance!
I wear plastic gloves and use my picker upper thing! Bag it and it goes directly in the trash bin.
DeleteShe has made a wise decision and gladly it was hers! She has so much pain all the time - I don't think it seemed unusual to her. She is a tough little thing.
Enjoy your warmth this week and have fun!
I am glad that your sister is moving to where she will have more help. Since we have expanded our recycling here in my city there doesn't seem to be as much trash lying around. However, considering the freeze your face off temperatures, I haven't been walking as much and therefore don't get to see how much trash is around.
ReplyDeleteYou had a lovely week.
God bless.
Thanks I am glad she will be moving as well.
DeleteThings here are supposed to be bagged when put in receptacles, but so many don't do that, and as windy as it gets - well there is trash around.
Stay warm! Have a blessed week.
I wish my week was as productive as yours. I feel like I am spinning my wheels, but my daughter has stepped in to do some of the things like meal planning and leftover management. My son had a stomach bug and I ran out of clear soda and he doesn't like chicken soup. He likes water and noodles from a can. So the only time I left the house was to get him some supplies. It snow yesterday and it continues to be 20-30 degrees. Looking forward to a little break in the weather.
ReplyDeleteWhen you have sickness in the house, it is hard to be very productive. Sorry your son was ill - hope he is feeling better. You like what you like!
DeleteCold and snow is getting old, I understand. I am so ready for spring too.
Hope all are well. Have a good week.
Prayers for your sister. It's tough when family reaches that point where health concerns creep in quickly. I do know, from my mother-in-law's health before she passed, that UTIs in the elderly can mimic stroke symptoms. So, if such symptoms appear, make sure the doctor tests for a UTI.
ReplyDeleteWe had quite a bit of freezing rain and ice Friday late and throughout the day on Saturday. But by this morning, it had all melted and the sidewalks were dry. We're expecting measurable snow on Weds. afternoon thru Thursday, with additional snow in the early forecasts for Friday and Saturday. Will make getting over to see my mom (in a nursing facility for rehab after a fall) more difficult, as lake effect snow off Lake Michigan may have an impact on weather conditions.
As for good buys, we had a new grocery store open in my area and they had some great loss leaders. They had my usual / preferred TP (one that is usually stocked as a store brand) on special for $2.99/12 pack, on a "must buy 5" of select items. So, I got 3 TP, and a jar of mayo and quart of ice cream for same price to make my 5. They also had strawberries, celery, and jumbo peppers (red, orange, yellow, or green) for $0.99 and a 3# bag of naval oranges for $1.99. They also had several other really good specials, but you had to download their app and clip digital coupons. Before doing that, I wanted to check the store out first, before adding more clutter to my phone. The place was packed on day 5 of their Grand Opening. Quality of their produce was excellent and the store was well organized and clearly marked, so I'll add the app, continue to watch their ads, and shop there when prices are right. The only thing I didn't like is that their dairy, deli, and breads are on the opposite side from their huge produce section (roughly 4 aisles wide, with refrigerated produce cases on each side, running the entire depth of the store), so it definitely will require more time to shop there, when compared to other options.
Thanks. It is amazing what a UTI can do - so many symptoms can appear.
DeleteThe weather is to come in here Wed. afternoon, but it looks like we may just get rain and a bit of mix according to radar now. Please be safe on your visit to see your mom. I hope she does well, and gets home soon.
What fantastic deals! WOW! It sure pays to check out new and different places. Glad you like it well enough to add the app. They have a method to their madness - they want you to walk the entire store to entice you to buy more!
It may be worth it for a while. Good shopping.
Have a super week.
Hi Cheryl! Have enjoyed your blog for years but this is the first time I have made a comment.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to say I really appreciate your compassionate and common sense way of looking at things and was touched by your "Choose Joy" post from Thursday. I have to remind myself to choose joy quite often.
Anyway, please keep blogging!
I applaud your sister for taking steps to navigate a new life situation....it is often hard to give up independent living even when it is absolutely necessary. I hope she finds an enjoyable assisted living situation.....most facilities are very nice nowadays.
I would love to see more posts about your yard and garden. You are obviously very knowledgeable and your plant and garden pictures are great.
Hello. Happy to have you here. I love it when people start commenting. Please jump in whenever you feel the urge!
DeleteThank you so much. Life has dealt me some hard blows over the years, and I have decided I would rather be happy than miserable all the time. I am glad people notice.
Yes, sis is a tough gal - and I am glad she has made this decision on her own. It will be different for her, but safer.
I will be talking about yard and garden more as the weather gets better. I am so excited to get outside and piddle around.
Please stay tuned!!!
Have a great week.
Sounds like a nice busy week for you. We are expecting a rainy week and I’m down with a respiratory crud. I’m hoping to get some stitching time in.
ReplyDelete
