Weekly Wrap Up 3/5

Happy Sunday to all.  Here we are another week gone, and Sunday once again.  The days seem to go by so quickly.  We have been all over the place this week with our weather.  We hit a record high of 76*F on Wednesday and Friday night after the horrible wind and rain storm - we had flurries!
There was so much rain on Friday.  We had well over 2" in a few hours.  Needless to say, I had a lake in the backyard.  It was probably in the top 3 worst 'lakes' I have ever had.  It is pretty much gone now, just muddy.  Boy oh boy, the robins are loving it!!!!!!  Wormies abound!

We have been fortunate by just getting rain and no snow.  We had virtually no measurable snowfall in Feb.  That has happened only 5X in history of record keeping.  I know there are many being inundated by snow.  It sure seems to be the year of weird weather so far!
It looks like this coming week will be pretty much normal temps - BUT - NO rain!!!!!!  YAY! And sunshine!

My very well worn and used Bible I got when I was 10 years old.

Kind of a quiet week again.
  • I did a stick pick-up 3X this week.  Not just from the wind, but those darned little squirrels.  They are young and trying to make nests - and don't quite have it down yet!  They keep chewing young branches from the trees for their nesting material - and then they drop them!
  • Cancelled my newspaper to a half service.  It is under half the price as before.  I think after a month of this, I will cancel all together.  I just don't read it like I used to.
  • Got my March coupons from Kroger
  • I trimmed my hair and did a root touch-up
  • Got to air the house a couple days
  • Made OJ from concentrate I had - much cheaper than buying prepared at this time
  • Continuing the wallpaper saga!
  • Did run to Kroger - got bananas and mandarins and eggs for 1.89 doz.!!!  Woop-woop!!!!  Needed very little - actually didn't NEED what I got - but wanted it!
  • Just doing basic deep cleaning and trying to de-clutter some more
  • Cooking from scratch and using what I have
Meals this past week:
Leftover day - taco meat/beans over rice and side salad
Hotdogs and tostada chips & cheese
Cube steak, mac with butter & parm. fresh veggies
Hand pies and a side of fresh veggies
Stew over baked potato w/cheese and sour cream
Chicken strips, rice, stir fry veggies
Stuffed shells and fresh veggies
My easy hand pies.  Used one pie dough and canned stew.  Cut dough in half - add approx. 1/4 can (20 oz.) can of stew.  Fold over and crimp.  Bake until golden.  My it was good.  Ate one and froze one.  Used the remainder of the stew over a baked potato the next day.

How was your week?  Did you get any deals?  How is your weather?  Do anything creative that we need to learn from?
I hope this finds you all safe and well.  Look forward to hearing from you all.

Blessings to you and yours from my humble little home.
Have a fantastic week.

  1. Good morning Cheryl, the hand pies look wonderful. I have wanted to make something like that but never got the enthusiasm to do it from scratch. Your method is perfect for me to try ;). Weather last week was rainy, for us, we got almost one inch of rain, so the news reporters were very excited ;). One inch in the desert is a lot. No flooding for me, and no roof leaks! 1. Good morning. Yes, this was easy. I had pre-made crust in freezer and a can of stew. Not EVERYTHING has to be made from scratch. Semi-homemade is yummy too. Give it a try - it was really good. Shoot, you could use any thick soup, chili, stew, so many options (even pizza stuff).
Glad you got some rain and no flooding. I know the west needs rain like crazy - and well, they are getting precipitation now! Hopefully it helps the drought a lot!
Glad all is good at your home. Huge plus!!!!!
Have a great week my friend.

  2. A lot of folks forget or don't want to acknowledge that the Father is in control. Actually it's very freeing to know that He is in charge!

I bought some Alba body lotion at 90% off. One kind was 88 cents and one was $1.05. This is a brand that we use some of their products.

The weather is schizophrenic! We are going to work on the sweet gum balls in the front yard this morning. After our big breakfast settles. ha! Turkey sausage gravy and biscuits, homemade hash browns and fresh eggs from the girls. Think I'll snack for lunch.

    1. Yes, I find it comforting - as I relinquish the control - it is nice to know that there is someone greater.
      Good deal on the lotion.
Yep, the weather is nuts. Tree 2 doors down release a bunch of those sweet gum balls! I hate those things.
It is a sunny day - so enjoy and don't work too hard.
      Have a great one!

  3. Good morning! I was so grateful that we only had a few inches of snow during the week, instead of the 6-12 expected. It melted off on Friday. Highs will be in the 50s all week. All the snow/melt led to a change of plans, and I was able to get 4 bags of drought tolerant, low-mow grass seed for free. We're going to need roots to hold the soil over the septic field. I also snagged some free bathroom curtains for both bathrooms.

Dropped off more donations to the local thrift store (I think I mentioned), but other than Blue's favorite dog food that's a fraction of the price of most brands, no groceries. Simple meals of spaghetti, taco salad, veg./beef soup, ground beef enchiladas, BBQ pork chops and a "leftover" night last night.

This verse was in one of my daily devotionals this week and is so appropriate: "But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?" (1 John 3:17) BIL should be here on Tuesday to stay. One more big U Haul truck + his pick up and a trailer to be unloaded into storage.

A final thrilling note to share, just past dawn one morning, as he was taking Blue for her morning constitutional, Hubs used his phone to tape a herd of elk coming through our yard to cross the street. How awesome is that?!! Be well, everyone. --Elise

    1. How thrilling to see the Elk! We just returned from a visit to Flag and they are not lacking snow up there! Most driveways had at least 4 feet of snow. The snow is great for our reservoirs so I can't complain.

    2. Glad you didn't get too much snow. I sure hope all this melt off helps the drought areas.
Your meals sound like my kind of meals. I bet you are glad BIL got storage units! That is a lot of stuff he is bringing. For what? No way he will ever use it all.
How neat to see the elk and to have them so close. Wow!! You sure get to see some neat things.
      Have a great week!

    3. Yes, Amy, Flagstaff and even Williams have had a LOT of snow this year. Even Show Low has had the 4th snowiest winter on record. This, with the extra wet monsoon season last summer should help fill the reservoirs for awhile. --Elise

  4. We're getting cooler weather than we had the last couple of days, and just a few degrees cooler than our normal temps for this time. I'll take it as it's not the bitterly cold weather we were seeing.
No grocery deals this week, as I didn't shop this week. One fun run to Dollarama with a friend, but I limited that to a couple of small gifts for Eli, a stand for my laptop and some items my daughter had asked for.
    Have a great week ahead!

  5. Spent the week fixing a wall in my bedroom and rearranging. I removed a useless shallow shelf unit that the previous owner had inset into a 39 in. x 31 in. window opening that was eliminated when the addition was added in 1982. Insulated the void for a little soundproofing, used the paneling from the back of the shelf unit and purchased trim to make the "patch" pretty much flush with the rest of the wall. Used lumber on hand to frame the opening and three old tension curtain rods to hold the insulation batt (leftover from another project) in place (batt was thicker than the depth of the opening). Primed (3x) and painted to match the rest of the room (a nice light blue). Also replaced missing trim to cover a large gap around the door so light will not leak into my room and wake me when Husband get up in the night. Replaced the bent door hinges. This all allowed me to get the head of the bed away from the wall of windows (where the road and highway noise was keeping me awake) and put the head of my bed up against the rehabbed wall.
In the bedroom I also got rid of a rickety make-do bookcase and moved an ugly storage cupboard out to the mud porch for use there. I could remove the bookcase because I am no longer buying books thanks to reading ebooks on my tablet. I unstacked the remaining two low bookshelves and put them under the east windows, giving me a place to start seeds. Moved a picture to Husband's room.
While I had the primer paint out, I painted Husband's bedroom door jamb where I'd had to sand it down to get the door to shut (a few years ago) and painted a small damaged portion of the hallway ceiling where I'd thought I was going to be able to replace the acoustic ceiling, but couldn't. I'd been wanting to do that ever since I moved in 20 years ago. Both look much better. Also touched up a number of places with the blue paint.
The whole project cost @$75 for mdf board for molding, wood trim around the wall patch, caulk, Kilz2 primer, and an 8oz. tester jar of blue paint (with plenty left over for future touch-ups). Wood is so expensive!

Crunched the numbers on my food spending year-to-date and determined that I'm spending 38% less than last year thanks to our low-carb, no-sugar diet. Averaged $221/mo. over the first 9 weeks of the year. Added bonus: Husband no longer needs prune juice and Metamucil since he can eat oatmeal and apples with his new teeth.

Our federal tax refund is to be here Wednesday and will go into a CD (11 mos @5%). I always do the taxes as soon as I get the last 1099. Turbo Tax gives a discount for filing in February.

We had Indy's weather a day later. Robins, starlings and grackles are back. House finches are courting, and our very vocal male titmouse found a mate. My crocuses have been blooming for a couple of weeks and the daffodils have buds. Lilies are coming up. Saw snowdrops at the walking trail a couple of weeks ago. The tree across the street is blooming, making a mess all over the street with all the wind.

Last week's main meal was crustless chicken pot pie. Today I am crockpotting meatballs, carrots (frozen from my garden), green beans, mushrooms, onion, and Campbell's golden mushroom soup with a little milk. Should turn out pretty good.

Our local Aldi took out 3 of 6 full serve checkouts and put in 6 self-serve. I'm not sure I'm going to like that since I buy a lot of produce. They've been having trouble getting/retaining employees and also are trying to keep prices low. Guess I'll have to learn the produce codes.

Yes, all the birdies are back. I have daffodils about to pop open.
Gosh, I haven't even thought about doing the taxes. Guess I better get busy. That is a pretty good rate on a CD for now days.
Curious on crustless chicken pot pie. How did you do that - it sounds like just filling.
Well crud on the Aldi. I haven't been in a bit - it is bound to be the way to go - but aggravates the doody out of me. I do not like self-check.
You went to Spam today - may be from a long post - I just don't understand that. I got your back!!!!!!!!

  8. A quiet week here that culminated in a 50th wedding anniversary party for my favorite sister-in-law & her husband. My son & his family came for the festivities. It was really like a family reunion. Fun was had by all. Now there's just the bedding to change & launder & back to my quiet routine. I got in 3 2-mile walks this past week & took down the outdoor Christmas decor (wreath on the hitching rail, porch pot & star lights from the deck railing) - easy peasy. I babysat the 20 mo old this week; she's in the middle of potty training. I don't miss those days. Meals this week - smoked pork chops w/ pyrogies, asparagus & salad (shared with company); chicken corn chowder; roast chicken w/ homemade sweet potato fries (any tips for getting them crisp in the oven?); chicken pot pie. Baked granola cookies & banana muffins. The spring temp was -20C this morning. Have a good week, Cheryl.

    Hello, all!
I am mere moments from a nap; I can feel it!!!! I didn't sleep well last night. After church, we picked up a couple of things at the market and came home. Ate lunch and now I'm dragging my be-hind!

It's supposed to be 75° today. What the heck?! It's beautiful out there and if our patio furniture was out, I'd take my nap outside.

Busy week and I got a lot done in the way of decluttering. It's such a good feeling. I worked on a couple of UFOs that I hope to finish this week.

Meals were Lima beans and ham, chicken and veggie stir fry, tuna sandwiches and home fries, peppery beef and noodles and broccoli, grilled cheese and tomato soup, beef barley soup, and chili.

    Reading -
On my nightstand '- Unintended Consequences by Stuart Woods.
In my craft room CD player - Bryan Adams and Alabama.
With my Bible study - a Lenten study.
By my reading chair - An Act of Treason by Vince Flynn.

Elise, that's neat about the elk! We saw some at the crack of dawn when we were leaving Tucumcari, NM one morning. I pulled over on I-40 so we could watch them for a minute!!

  11. Oh my, that scripture is wonderful for me this week! I sure appreciated seeing your Bible from childhood that you still use. That's so, so neat! I have my dad's childhood Bible in my curio cabinet with old photos and his wire frame eyeglasses from when he was a little boy. My curio cabinet is like a museum. My husband and son in law salvaged it from someone's trash and we painted it matte black with off-white interior wall, hubs painted the hardware pewter and it's very 'dark academia' as they now call it.

Those hand pies sound like a neat thing to do with many things! I bet you could get potatoes and gravy too, or even little fruit pies! Yummo! I made a red kidney bean soup with tofurkey in it and served it with brown rice. I put a can of tomatoes in it and a bag of collards too...So good! I use the Camellia brand of kidney beans and follow the basic recipe on the bag except I add tomatoes and tofurkey. We got two meals out of that and I froze a large amount. We had falafal one night with a side of corn and a green. We had pasta on Thursday and I still have some of that, hubs had pizza last night and I just did my pasta leftovers and it was good. Then an old Columbo was watched, we've also been watching an old b/w movie in segments with Burt Lancaster called 'The Train', so far so good, we shall see. I'll probably scramble some eggs up for tonight and maybe continue 'The Train'.

Not sure if I've gotten any super great deals this week, I just picked up some frozen bags of various greens today at Wally and some tofurky. Picked up a few of their cotton vneck ts for 4-something. One of our daughters got some very good deals at an Aldi. One of the Aldis near hubs office doesn't have much health stuff but the one out further closer to major plants actually does! So it was so nice of her to pick up some great deals on that for our youngest daughter who lives here at home.

Oh girlfriend! I'm decluttering too...I have my work cut out for me and it's almost overwhelming.

That wallpaper sounds like a real challenge for you and I can understand why with all of that glue...Not fun!

I hope we'll see more of the sun this week sure enough. Our baby chicks are getting their feathers in and the two hens are best buds now safe in their fence. Our little rescued poodle is on antibiotics and cream for an ear infection caused by yeast. Silly me thought it was mites and was treating it like that. Thank God I was quick to bring her to the vet to get things identified when I saw things were *not* better. Also, what I thought was a lipoma is a hernia where someone kicked her hard, a car hit her or a large animal bit her. The vet said she has had a h*ll of a life. Poor little thing!

I hope your Sunday is nice. it's a beautiful evening here. The Burt Lancaster movie, 'The Train' is on Tubi btw. I hope it turns out to be a good movie.

Hugs and thanks again for that most appropriate scripture!

    1. Glad another found the scripture important today.
Yes, I got that Bible when I joined the church at 10 and have used it constantly since. As you can tell it has been taped on the outside. I have another and I have G's - but this is familiar.
Yes, those hand pies could be filled with anything. SO easy to do - especially if you have crusts already made up. The crust and the insides just tasted so good together.
You poor puppers. Poor sweet baby - so happy it found you. You just never know what a rescue has gone through. Glad to hear the chicks are all safe and doing good.
I have so many old movies recorded - just need to take the time to watch them. There sure are some great ones. They don't make actors or movies like they used to!!!!!
It is lovely out today and this evening. I am in for the evening - going to rest a bit. Had a busy day.
      Have a wonderful week!
