Weekly Wrap Up 8/24

Hello and happy Sunday to all.  I am hoping you are all well and safe this fine Sunday.  One more week of this month and then it will be September.  I know that makes some happy - but I would just as well wait a while.  We will be experiencing a 'fake' fall this coming week - with highs in the 70's F, and lows in the 50's.  That will sure be a nice reprieve for a bit.  That is perfect weather in my book.  It has been much better the past few days - the humidity has come down and the temps as well.  I have sure enjoyed it.  It will get hot again, no doubt about that.

I saw a hummingbird moth again this week.  That doesn't happen often - they are just so neat.  Hummingbirds have been very active and drinking a lot, I hope that doesn't mean what I think.  The bright gold finches have been loving the echinacea seeds!
Got to walk a lot this week, porch sit and visit with many neighbors.  Nice.

My frugal week:
  • Picking lots and lots of produce!  Lot of peppers and a good 50-60 lbs. of tomatoes this week!!  I will be picking more today.  The zucchini is done now.  The cherry toms are pretty much done (although setting new blooms), but the regular tomatoes are just going nuts.  I have some that are a pound or over that I have picked - Beef Master.  Talk about a nice slice of tomato!
Here is the one that was just a tad over a pound - there are others close to that weight!  Fills the hand
  • Cleaned out the area between fence and drive again (neighbor's stuff coming through).  I sure wish they would keep things up - sigh.  He finally did his front fence yesterday - looks a little better
  • Cut wild trees and weeds coming up out back in flowers - seems a constant chore
  • Lots of laundry - I seem to change clothes a lot in the summer heat!
  • Made new hummingbird nectar and cleaned the feeders
  • Took the neighbor some tomatoes and peppers, came home with cukes and 2 patty pan squash.  She brought me cukes 2 more times this week - loving that!
  • "Pickled" peppers 3 ways this week.  All easy - some sliced and placed in the jalapeno jar, some sliced and placed in the jar of mild banana rings from store, and one jar of refrigerator dill peppers
  • Mowed and trimmed the entire yard over 2 days.  A neighbor brought over his blower, when I got done with the front, as I was getting ready to sweep walks and drive.  That was neat to use - I got get one of those!
  • Got to air the house and turn of AC a lot!!!
  • Didn't leave, so no grocery shopping
  • Had a sweet tooth one day, so got creative.  Heated a couple waffle pieces from freezer in toaster - let them cool - and then made an ice cream sandwich out of them.  That was good
  • Used zucchini, peppers and summer sausage in a baked spaghetti that I made in the air fryer
  • Grapes picked and in freezer to make jelly later on
  • Took lots of walks this week - it was so nice and the air refreshing - free exercise
  • Cooking from home and using what I have
Meals this past week:
Potato/egg/cheese skillet & sliced tomatoes
Chicken strips, fries and fresh veggies
Italian bread pizza (made air fryer) (bread from freezer)
Pizza piece and salad
Baked spaghetti & sliced toms - 2X
BLT and side salad
SNACKS - tomato sandwich, toms & cukes, fruit, ice cream sandwich

This week I will be doing canning, now that it is cooler.  Got to get those tomatoes put up into winter goodies and 'gifts'.   Have shared a lot of them.
Just the same stuff, nothing exciting going on here.  Life the way I like it.
How has your week been?  Give us a shout out and let us all know what you have been doing and how those gardens are doing.

I hope you all have fantastic week and please, stay healthy and safe.  Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.
I leave you with a wonderful poem today!

WIDEN MY VISION
God open my eyes
    so I may see
And feel Your presence
    close to me.
Give me strength
    for my stumbling feet
As I battle the crowd
    on life's busy street,
And widen the vision
    of my unseeing eyes
So in passing faces
    I'll recognize
Not just a stranger,
    unloved and unknown,
But a friend with a heart
that is much like my own.
Give me perception
     to make me aware
That scattered profusely
     on life's thoroughfare
Are the best gifts of God
    that we daily pass by
As we look at the world
    with an unseeing eye.

                              AMEN

Lord, please keep each and every one in your loving, caring and healing arms.  May we all have a blessed week ahead and may we all be a friend to someone in need.  Thank you for our many blessings.  Amen

  1. Our week was similar: cut/trim grass; weed flower beds; gather garden produce; morning walks. There was .75" of rain this past week. The grass is finally green with the 1.75" of rain that fell previously. A cousin gifted me cucumbers so made 5 qts of dills. Refrigerator pickles will be made today. I froze some more beans. I prefer to can beans but just didn't have enough this yr. I hosted another cousin & her partner for their birthday bbq. And I was invited to yet another cousin's for the chili dog night at his beautiful lakefront home. I am very aware of how fortunate I am to have all these family connections. The neighbor little & I spent a day in town at the library, donut shop, McDonald's; music in the park. In the kitchen: roast chicken; chicken/cranberry/cheese panini; cucumber & cheese on toast; steak bbq w/ foil wrapped veg & corn on the cob, cherry pie from the freezer; cherry & lemon tarts; spicy chicken salad; tortellini soup. I read 4 books this month, the best one being Miriam Toews' Fight Night. Yes, summer is coming to an end. It was still dark at 5am this morning. Have a good week, Cheryl.

    1. Yep, sounds like we did several things the same this week. All that fresh produce is just so lovely!! I love home canned green beans.
You are very fortunate to have those great family ties. All the events sound super - house on the lake sounds intriguing. Oh what a wonderful day with the little neighbor - I bet she had a ball.
Your dishes all sound so good. I don't think I have read 4 books all summer - good job. Yes mam, daylight hours are shrinking for sure.
      Have a wonderful week ahead.

  2. For me, it was a week of work, babysitting, and pulling weeds. Some rain showers were quite heavy. More zucchini, more beans. :) Decided not to do something I had planned (Singing Camp) because of all the babysitting this week on days when I wasn't working or pulling weeds, I knew I would be too exhausted to enjoy it. Just an accident of timing.

Repairs have started on the garage, and there's more damage than originally thought, so more $$$ will be leaving my savings. Ah well, that's why I *have* savings!

Deliberately spending a lot of time being grateful for all my blessings. I've been kinda freaked out about the garage repairs and money, so I must simply hold in mind that I'm being guided every step of the way.

I can see some fall colors on the dogwood leaves and the hosta leaves are withering. Yes, summer is coming to a close. My evening primroses

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oenothera_biennis

are blooming - such tall plants, taller than I am! They come up wherever they wish and suddenly I have great yellow flowers, all about 5 feet in the air! I can see some of next year's plants, their first-year rosettes of leaves. Maybe next year I can pay closer attention and move some first year plants closer together early in the season when they're little.

The Good Lord made some wonderful things. :)

    1. What a busy week. I think you are probably right, I bet you would not have enjoyed the camp being so tired.
I hate major repairs - but they need to be done. You are so right, that at least you have the funds to do it. That is why we save. Glad you have it, and don't have to go in debt. Heck, we can't take it with us!
I don't see any color to speak of here, but I know the squirrels are enjoying walnuts already - as they eat very little corn here. It is always obvious. Your flowers sound wonderful. I will check out the link.
Yes indeed, the Lord made all the beauty and wonder in the world, and we should be awestruck by it.
      Have a blessed week.

    2. Those evening primroses are considered *weeds*. Many of my flowers are weeds. I do not have a neat cleaned-up suburban garden. ;)

    3. The internet pictures are pretty. I do not have cleaned up suburban gardens either - very country style here. Just natural.

  3. Your tomatoes look wonderful!

I am getting my former house ready to sell. This week I had some necessary plumbing done and I’ll have one more thing tomorrow. I’m having the house painted inside this week. I’m having new flooring (low-end) put in the kitchen and bathrooms but that will take 4-5 weeks and I do not have the quote but I’ve picked it out and had the measurements done on Friday.

I’m also still working on/planning a needed plumbing upgrade at my current house. I will be so glad when all of this house stuff is finished.

Finally got outside to do a lot of trimming in the yard this morning. We had torrential rains yesterday.

Frugalities are still running my a/c at 80 F. day and night, low grocery spending ($121 so far this month but I will buy a few things this week) and fairly low gasoline ($25 so far this month but I may get gas this week). Listening to books on the Libby app and watching YouTube (mostly travel videos) for entertainment.

Visited the specialist who saved my life three years ago for my annual visit and got a good report. That was my best day.

    1. that is a lot of work -2 houses at once. I sure wouldn't want to do that. Glad it will be done soon. Homes sure are work.
You are doing great financially! I got to turn off AC a ton this week and the house still feels nice. Should be off all next week. YAY!
Great on the groceries and gas. Reminds me, this is the last week of the month and time for me to top off. I think I only used about a 1/4 tank all month.
YAY on your best day!!! Congrats on a good report! Love hearing that.
      Have a wonderful week.

  4. Helen Steiner Rice always had wonderful words of wisdom. Very nice devotional for the first day of the week!

It is beautiful out today! I went out to hang clothes on the line and the weather is just perfect.

Wowzer on the big tomato! The last two years our tomatoes have been less than stellar. You will enjoy those tomatoes this winter. The banana pepper plant is going nuts so we'll harvest a variety of peppers to take to the neighbor down the street. The green beans are still going. Probably one last small picking.

    Enjoy your day!

    1. I just love her work. She is probably my favorite poet.
It is just gorgeous out. I have picked tomatoes and peppers. And I have already taken 2 neighborhood walks and talked with neighbors. Windows open! Aaahhhhhhhh
The tomatoes are just going crazy. Glad your banana peppers are doing good too. Fresh green beans!
      Have a beautiful week.

  5. You really do need a battery powered blower. I have a Stihl and I love mine. It's so easy to blow off the patios every time I want to. TBG has a riding mower but we also bought a Stihl battery powered mower this year and I love that thing also. It's so easy to start and does a great job around the tight spaces and edges.
This has been a pretty good garden year here too. I was worried because with all of the spring rain and cold temps and then brutal heat I didn't expect much. You just never know do you?
Enjoy the cooler air and have a fabulous week!!

    1. I am going to have to get one. Maybe one that has same battery as weed eater and hedge trimmer - that would be neat.
I wondered about the garden too with the weather. It started slow - but boy, it has gone gang busters. I love it.
Thanks. You have a lovely week as well.

    2. If you get a Stihl, the batteries are all the same for everything.

  6. What a beautiful poem. I like your ice cream waffle sandwich idea, how creative! So nice of you and your neighbors to share produce like that. Your tomatoes are huge! Such a bounty and blessing for sure. I know you will enjoy the cooler weather coming up. I read about the cold front coming through in the news this morning. It will definitely be welcome!

    1. I thought it was just lovely.
Well, I used what I had, and to be honest it waste quite good. I will do that again! I am so blessed with toms this year. So happy they finally did well. Lots of salsa and pizza sauce planned.
I am loving the weather already and it will be cooler this week. Super to me. Not ready at all for winter, just a little cooler is good.
      Have a fantastic week.

  7. Now that is a bumper crop of tomatoes!!! So nice to have cooler weather, along with it getting darker earlier, we are having heavy dew each night. And are busy getting the yard ready for when we leave. Lots of work needs doing. Deadheaded all the flowers today, and tomorrow I weed and water.
Enjoy your harvest and sharing with the neighbours.

    God bless.
