9 down and only 3 to go!

Howdy all.  Here we go ending another month!  Yesterday was 89*(F) here - but it really didn't feel bad.  Today will be around 87* they say.  Looks like it will be in the 80's for at least the next 7-10 days and not much of a chance of precipitation at all.  Summer just isn't letting go.

We are now at this point in the seasons.  Time for fall festivals and soon the end to farm markets.  Most all the farm markets conclude here in October.  Crafty sales will be starting, and the thoughts will go towards thinking of holiday gifts.

I had a pretty good September.  I got to see lots of family and friends. That is always good.  The garden has been producing a lot and still is.
Can you believe we have now made it through 9 months of the year???  Seems like just yesterday it was NY day!  Time has flown by, so you know the next 3 months will be gone in a flash!

Let me show you a couple things I got this month.
Here are the sweet little ornament that I received from Cookie.  She does the nicest work and is always thinking of others.
Look at this cute container.  This is what my niece sent chili home with me in.  She had several of them.  They are REUSABLE!  I can put my hand on the lid and spread my fingers, so it is pretty nice size.  I got 2 of them.  They would be so cute to use for snacks or treats.  I don't know where she got them, and I well imagine they weren't cheap.  I bet they cost more than I would pay - but she doesn't worry much about those kinds of things!  She sent a lot of them home with people.

Plans for October for me.  This is homeowner's insurance month!  UGH.  It has gone up a LOT again this year.  I pay it once a year - so it isn't a surprise, I just hate giving them that money!
That is my big expense this month.

I need to get my plans together and start some gifts I am thinking about making for the littles for Christmas.  I want to make some stuffed patchwork cuddly toys.  A dinosaur, a cat and a couple Mini Mouse items.  Maybe a baby blanket if there is time - I will be getting another new gr.gr. niece sometime this month!

I plan on not shopping much in October.  I have gone through all my supplies - of all sorts - and there truly is no need to shop for much.  I may hit a farm market sometime this month or the orchard to get apples but really need nothing.  It isn't about saving money, it is about trying to use up the older items and using what I have.  I am chronic about buying the 'deal'.  Well, it doesn't make much sense to have all this stuff and not use it.  DUH!  So, this will be a month of use it.
As for fresh - I still have lots of fruit, I have tomatoes and peppers out the wazoo - and I have veggies and fruit in the freezer and canned.  I won't need milk for a couple weeks+, nor cheese or butter.

I want to continue to clean for 'fall' cleaning.  I have kept the windows open a lot lately and there seems to always be dust, and those darn dust bunnies everywhere!  I want to continue to declutter in the basement - just so much that hasn't been used in years.
BUT I also want to enjoy the month and the season.

What do you have planned for October?  I love hearing what everyone is up to, and it often gives us all good ideas!  Give us a shout!

Have a super day and enjoy this last day of September.

Do what you can, with what you, where you are!

Weekly Wrap Up 9/28

Happy Sunday all.  Hope you are all well and safe this fine day.  Here we are again at the last Sunday of the month!  It feels like anything but fall around here.  Fall is playing hide and seek I believe!  We are to get in the high 80's (F) today and tomorrow, and the 80's all week.  No humidity!  It feels like fall with chilly mornings, then in no time the temps are back to warm.  Garden is still producing, and many flowers are still pretty.
A preview of what is to come.  Sure wouldn't want a fire around here, right now!

The hummingbirds were eating like crazy for so long, and then towards the end of the week - BOOM they are gone!  It is so sad.  I will sure miss my little flying jewels.  I will keep feeders out for a while, as strangers fly through.
I managed to get myself some poison ivy this week on my arm.  I had on long sleeves and gloves, while working in the yard, but I guess the shirt came up a bit and that spot got it!  It is so itchy.  At least it is improving.

My frugal week:
  • I managed to pick about 40 lbs. of tomatoes this week.  I think the huge loads are done, but there are bunches still out there, they are still blooming and lots of little ones.  Picked peppers as well.
  • Pickled some more peppers and put up a bunch of tomatoes
  • I took the neighbor some tomatoes and I received some apples from the orchard and some sparkling grapefruit juice she didn't like (I love it)
  • Spent Tuesday visiting with sis
  • Cleaned the flowerbed right behind the house and then deadheaded and worked on the perennial bed out back.  Pulled out the cherry toms from pots and cleaned pots out.
  • Had my oldest squirrel feeder come down, so I reinstalled that
  • Actually mowed and trimmed the front yard (just some tall weeds)
  • I curbed the shed a lot more - to help keep critters out from there - at least until after hibernating time
  • Did fill gas tank for the month for 2.85/gal.  Saved .40 per gallon.  Neede less than a half tank
  • Lots of laundry and used dehumidifier water - hung to dry
  • Rode with my brother to my gr. nieces for a birthday event for nephew.  Had grilled hot dogs and chili and lots of goodies.  It was fun to see everyone.  She sent me home a bunch of chili!!!
  • Lots of walks
  • Received 2 very pretty fall/Halloween ornaments (homemade) from Cookie - she does such lovely work
  • Just doing the regular stuff and keeping the AC off a lot
Meals this past week:
Fish sandwich and pasta salad
French bread pizza
Grilled cheese and fresh veggies/dip
Beef/veggies over cheesy rice and sliced tomatoes
Tuna patty, l/o rice with beans added, tom./cuke/onion salad
l/o beans and rice and loaded ham/cheese sandwich
Dinner at nieces
Snacks: fruit, tomatoes and cukes, cheese and crackers

There you have it.  A pretty frugal week and some things accomplished around here.  Oh, I got propositioned to do yet another t-shirt blankie for next spring for a gr.gr. nephews' graduation!  I guess they like them!
How was your week?  How is your weather?  Heard there is a lot of flooding in different areas, hope you are all safe.
Wishing you all a lovely week ahead.  Be safe and stay healthy.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

Dear Lord we thank You again for our week and all the blessings that we have received daily.  Prayers that we can all keep our eyes on You and Your loving ways.  May we all go forward and be the best that we can be and do for others every day.  Never let our faith and love wither.  Amen

Normalizing Can Save Dollars

Hello to all.  Here we are again, coming upon a weekend.  It is supposed to be a lovely weekend in these parts.  This morning, I surprised to wake up hearing rain!  I really didn't think we were to get more, but we did.  After today, it looks like it will be dry for many days to come.
It is cool and gloomy this morning.  It sure doesn't look like we will have fall weather for a while.  They say the next week or two is supposed to be in 70's and 80's.  Forecast is for a warmer than normal October.  Love it!
Let's see, I have fed both kitties, fed the critters, washed my head, made the bed, and filled the seed containers.  I will soon go out for a walk.
Bitsy is in the window, watching the world go by - and Licorice is curled up on the glider on the porch napping after his breakfast.  We are all in slow mode!
Funny, I thought about going to the store to get a couple items and laid in bed last night and talked myself out of it.  I truly need nothing!  More than enough here.  Why the heck go?

Click on pic to enlarge for easier reading

Color me - ALL OF THESE!!!!!!
Goodness sakes, this is me.  I just live slow and simple and it is NORMAL for me.

I have many quality items that have been around for years and years - and they are still good.
My life is mainly around the home.
I make a lot of gifts for people.
I rest when I want.  I used to think naps were a waste of good time - not now.  I love a short catnap - it seems I actually sleep better on those days.  I find if I work hard, and no nap, I have a hard time sleeping during the night.
Porch sitting with neighbors (or alone) is a nice thing to do.
I walk a lot to get exercise - and yard work also helps with free exercise.
I have been trying to stay off the computer more.
I cook at home and enjoy the food.
I rarely pay full price for anything and love looking for a thrift bargain.
I make no debt - pay what bills I have on time.
I know how to say NO!
I truly love the sound of 'quiet'!

None of these costs a thing.  It is normal and it is lovely.  You can save money and KEEP money in so many simple ways.
I truly advise everyone to make these things normal in your life.  You really won't be sorry.
There is much to be said about peace and tranquility.
YEP!
That is a good reason why decluttering is a good idea.  The less 'stuff' you have the less 'stuff' you have to take care of and clean.  Sure, it is work to get to that point - but go slow and stay steady and you will get it done.
Appreciate the fact that sitting and watching and listening to nature, or reading a book, or talking with family or neighbors, or working around the yard is far better than fighting the crowds at a mall or on the road.
Slow and steady really does WIN!

Hope you all have a lovely weekend just chilling and enjoying the season.
Have a superbly wonderful day!

The Steps we Take

Hello all and happy Wednesday. Hope you are all well and safe.

It is a damp morning here - we got some more rain over night. I did not hear it at all - but everything is wet. YAY! So happy for it, as it is surely needed. Today should be in the 70's, which is perfect to me.

Today I want to share something I received a couple days ago. I think it says things perfectly.

🌿 The Stages We Walk 🌿
Life has always felt to me like a long walk down a familiar road.
When we’re children, the road is wide and full of wonder. We run barefoot, chasing fireflies, with knees scraped from riding bikes and bedtime stories whispered under blanket forts. We hold our parents’ hands, never worrying about how far the road might go. The world feels endless, and so do we.
In our twenties and thirties, the pace changes. We walk faster. We chase goals, careers, love, and the dream of building something that’s ours. Sometimes, we stumble. Sometimes, we sprint. These are the years of late-night deadlines, little league games, and family dinners squeezed between busy schedules. The road feels uphill, but the climb gives us strength.
By our forties and fifties, the road begins to level out. We are no longer running — we are walking with purpose. We carry children on our shoulders, mortgages on our backs, and hopes in our hearts. It is tiring, yes, but also beautiful. Because these are the years when we discover what truly matters: not the pace, but the company we keep.
Then, the sixties, seventies, and beyond. The road gets quieter. Our steps slow, but our eyes see more than they ever did before. We notice the shade of the trees, the softness of the breeze, the sound of laughter drifting from behind us. These are the years of holding grandchildren’s hands, planting gardens, and writing letters that will outlive us. We know the truth now: it was never about how fast we walked — it was about who walked beside us.
And one day, each of us will reach the end of the road. That part is not sad — it is simply part of the journey. Because even when our footsteps fade, the echoes remain in the hearts of those who loved us. The road continues for them, carrying pieces of us forward.
💡 The lesson? Don’t rush the stages. Don’t sprint past the moments. Every chapter has its own beauty — from the barefoot days of childhood to the slower steps of old age.
Because in the end, life isn’t about how quickly we walked… but how deeply we loved along the way. ❤️

Yesterday, I spent the day with sis, and as usual we talked and talked. I learn things every time we visit. Being the youngest, I missed out on a lot of things that got done and shared. She is the eldest and saw it all. I lean things that MAYBE I wasn't supposed to learn!!! But they are being shared and I have a new look on family from the past. It is always evolving. I saw pictures I have never in 70 years seen. Pretty cool. Life just keeps giving.

As the 'story' says - the 60's, 70's, and beyond kind of slow and we see life differently. I really am enjoying this season of life. So many things that were missed in our busy lives before are seen and heard now.

Life is an adventure. It has seasons just like all things in nature. I hope you each enjoy the season you are in and make it something great. Pass on the stories, good and indifferent - it is part of your history and those just coming up. I so enjoy learning all the things. I feel it enriches my life. New lessons are learned.
Talk about those before you and those no longer here - it keeps them alive.

Enjoy the story. Enjoy life and your family and friends.
Today is one of a kind and will never come again. Make it special.

Have a blessed day all.

Waste Not......

Happy Fall all!!!  Hope this find you well on this Tuesday and first full day of fall here in the northern hemisphere!  Fall equinox has arrived.  The daylight hours get shorter every day - ugh.  I really like my daylight - but this is part of it.
It is a very damp morning here.  Dew is dripping from the trees, and it was extremely foggy at daybreak.
We got rain!!!!!!  Yesterday we had about 8 hours of a soft rain - no downpours - just nice soaking rain.  I am sure the grass and plants enjoyed it.  Today is to be dry, so I have a few errands to run.  Rain comes back tomorrow, then the week will be dry and pretty after that.

Waste not, want not - we have all heard that phrase.  It is really very true!  The more you can use of what you already have and find reuses for, the better.  It saves you money.
ALSO, the more skills you have, the less money you spend or need.  Learn to fix, mend, reuse, and get creative and you will save $$.
Homemade pasta salad kit!  LOL!!  You can use whatever you have on hand to make a yummy pasta salad.

We all know leftovers can be re-invented into new meals and new dishes.  Don't let that precious food go to waste.  It is like throwing money away.
It isn't just leftover food, but scraps as well.  You can make flavored vinegars with fruit or veggie scraps.  Fruit scraps can be added to plain liquor to make flavors.  Think jelly, syrup, extracts, etc. from scraps.  Flavored teas can be made with any leftover fruit.  Flavored waters or ice cubes.  Dehydrate and use to flavor all sorts of things.  Adds a little nourishment as well.  When all used up, compost if possible.
Even old bags can save funds.  The plastic ones can be used as trash can liners, poo bags, sorting and storage bags.  I use them to collect my harvests.
Cover sensitive plants in the garden when a threat of frost.  The mesh produce bags can be reused - remove labels and use again when buying bulk produce.  Make scrubbies from them.  Dry things like onions in them.  Good for all kinds of crafts.  Plastic bags can used in crafts as well.  My mom used to cut plastic bags in strips and make the prettiest Christmas wreaths!

Old furniture doesn't have to be thrown out.  You can reglue, scrape, paint and make like new items.    Recover, restuff, paint, new handles (those can be creative too).  Make some new and fun furniture pieces for your home for pennies.

Fabrics, whether scraps or old clothes can be remade into fun new items.  They can be decorations, pillows, quilts, throws, aprons, hot pads, you name it!  You can actually make 'fabric' with scraps - big sheets of scraps, then make whatever you want with the fabric.  There is no limit to what you can do.

                                                            Fun ideas or gifts!

Pretty much, everything old is new again!  We can get creative and reuse so many things if we just stop and think.  Heck, even dried flowers or 'weeds' or leaves can be made into pretty arrangements or decorations.

Saving money is only limited to your imagination. Be positive in your ideas.  Get creative - all things are possible.

When life throws you a curve ball, and your funds are low or cut - it doesn't mean that you can't still have nice things or eat good (and recycle at the same time).  You can truly live a good life and have fun with it all at the same time.
Waste not - want not....  it sure is true.

Have a grand day all.  Smile and say kind words!

Weekly Wrap Up 9/21

Hello all - and happy Sunday to you.  It is an overcast morning here, I guess some had rain over night.  I see no signs here.  We are really in a drought - the back yard has big cracks in it!  There are chances of rain for a few days - so here is hoping.  Looks like this coming week will be cooler (70's), but a bit humid.  That's ok if we get some rain!

Leaves are falling, but it really has nothing to do with fall or color.  It is just dry and the dead leaves fall - not pretty at all yet.
I think we are probably done with the 90's for 2025.  Fall equinox is tomorrow!
                                                            Oh, the comfy life!!!!
My frugal week:
  • Ran to Kroger on Sunday to get a special.  Got cider for $5 for 2 -1/2gallons (been craving), got milk 2.39 gal. and 12 pears on clearance for $3.  The best fresh pears I have ever had! 8 plums for 1.50 on clearance - tasty.
  • Picking produce.  Got 20 lbs. of tomatoes and many peppers.  My tomato plants are just so thick, it is hard to find the tomatoes - it has been a great year.  Lots more out there.
  • Froze 4 more quarts tomatoes
  • Went to lunch with an old friend from growing up.  She lives in Ft. Wayne, so we haven't seen each other in years.  Lunch at Uno's was delish.  Got a huge grilled burger, tons of fries and unlimited drinks for 10.99.  Brought home a bunch of fries.  She brought me a handbag/tote she made from vintage fabrics and a beautiful necklace she made.  She is very crafty.  We had lunch with 2 other gals from the neighborhood.
  • Later that day - went to 70 birthday party for high school class.  There was over 100 that showed up!  Served pizza and cake - met new people again (after 52 years).  We had a huge class, so I always meet new folks.  It was really nice.  Theme was 'music from 1970' - so lots of folks wore group t-shirts.  I had my 'Stevie Nicks' flowy cover-up on!!  LOL - (and bell bottoms)
  • Made a big bowl of pasta veggie salad to last the week
  • Lots of walks
  • Been watering plants and filling bird baths and feeders from rain barrels (trying t use it all up)
  • Haven't had to mow for 2 week - nothing growing
  • More hummer feed - they are drinking like crazy
  • Using up leftovers and eating from home (other than 1 day)
  • Have managed to keep AC off every day until late afternoon
  • Cleaning and trying to declutter some more
Meals this past week:
Bacon/cheese topped chopped steak, salad
Eggroll bowl
BLT
Smoked sausage on bun, pasta salad
Out to lunch
Chicken breast, leftover fries (in air fryer), pasta salad
Fried green tomatoes, bacon, fried egg
SNACKS - fruit and pasta salad, popcorn one day

Nothing real exciting, except the outings.  That was a fun day - tiring, but fun.
How was your week?  Any fun adventures?  Any good deals?  Are you still getting garden goodies?
Look forward to hearing from you all.

Stay safe and healthy and hoping you all have a great week.  Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

Lord, we send up thanks for our week and all the blessings that we received each and every day.  Thank You for being our guiding light.  I know I would be lost without You in my life.  Your word and Your will be done always!  We are blessed indeed.  Amen

2 Sides

Good morning, all.  Hope you are all well and safe.  It is another lovely morning in the 60's here.  Looks like it may hit 90* today.
I read a report yesterday that the Weather Channel is predicting an above average temperature for here and many areas, for October, November and December!  I say yay!  I hate cold and nasty.
I have had so many stink bugs flying around here.  Every time I look at a window there are a couple on the outside of the screens.  Ick.  Those things are nasty and ugly.
Hummers are still here and eating!

Boy isn't this the truth!
Also, mom always said; wear clean undies, be a good person, speak nice words, do nice things for others, and have good clean fun.

I have to share a little story today.  I did run into the Kroger on Sunday.  They had a 2-day sale on cider, and I have been craving some.  So, I ran in to get that, and milk half gallons was also on sale.  Didn't really need milk but figured I might get a half gallon to have in case.
Halves were 1.39, which equals 2.78 gallon.  Not bad.  So, I grab a half and start to put in cart and look back and the gallons were 2.39!!!!!
So, I say to myself (yet out loud) "that's just crazy" and put the half back and got a gallon.    I hear a man say, "I love when you young folks pay attention to pricing."  I turn around and there is an older gentleman, and me - no one else.  I kind of chuckle and said "sorry?"  He went on to say he thought it was great to see young folks paying attention to pricing and not falling for the tricks of the store.  I told him it was how I was raised, and I always price check.  We had a lovely little conversation.
Now I tell you this, because I had such a good chuckle as I walked through the store.  "YOUNG FOLKS"! LOL
Bless his heart - he had no way of knowing that he made this old gal's heart happy that day.  Brought a smile to my face.  We just never know how our comments or actions can change a day for someone.
I still giggle thinking of that!

Just a little story of an unexpected conversation making my heart smile.  We can all do that.

I am making this a short one as today and this evening are going to be really busy for me.  I have a luncheon with a friend I haven't seen in years.  Then late afternoon and early evening is the 70-birthday party for our graduating class.  Last we had the '69' party as everyone was turning 69 - this year everyone is pretty much 70 - so here we go again.  Dressing the part in 1970 garb is part of the fun as well!

I will try to answer comments as I can, but don't worry if it may be tomorrow before I answer.

Have a good day, STAY YOUNG AT HEART, and smile and be on the better side!!!!!

Simple & Basic is for me!

Hello to all.  Hope this finds you all well.  Goodness golly, here we are midweek and mid-month again!  It is a lovely morning here.  It is now the season where, I must walk about with a big stick, when going down walkways or between things!  Spider webs are everywhere, and I do not cherish waling into their lairs!

It sure does for me.  I like things simple and basic.  It is the 'small' stuff that gives me joy.
Yesterday while I was out walking, I had a moment!  I was looking around as I walked, then I just stopped and looked at everything surrounding me, and I felt soooooo small.  For a moment I felt like a miniature standing in the land of giants.  Everything looked so grand and pretty - even the little things.  It was almost like an out of body experience.
My neighbor must have noticed me stopping, and when I finally came back up by her house, she asked me what I was looking at.  "My smallness" was my answer - she just smiled.  She got it.
We are indeed small in this world.  One of billions, like a grain of sand.  We are important to those close to us, but as the world turns, we are hardly noticed.
Yet here we are - part of God's plan and creation.

Somedays it pays to notice the simple things.  I live a very simple and basic life.  You will not see anything grand here.  I live in a basic home - nothing grand, but it is mine.  I drive a basic vehicle.  Old, but still goes.  I wear simple clothes - some many years old.  If I have a 'name' brand it is only because I got it at a yard sale and liked it - nothing to do with the label.  I have a small garden, but it gives me and others fresh produce.

I have basic and simple decor at my home - things I love, cherish and appreciate.  Nothing big and shiny and new.
A simple basket of some of my dad's old magazines from the 60's and 70's.  Still worth the read and info is still valid.  They were daddies and he read them and touched/held them and that gives me comfort.

Simple laughter some days.
Bitsy gets so excited every morning when I get ready to open the door.  He gets to see Licorice!  I often wonder if he things that is Blackie or if he knows he is a different kitty.  He talks and chatters and yells, until I open the door.  He loves on me and hugs me - then he sees his outdoor friend.  Once they see each other, and I give Licorice food, Bits hides behind the door, looking through the crack.  Like to say "he'll never see me"!  Every morning!!!!!  What a way to start the day!

Simple food and eating.
Meatball stuffed corn muffins.  A bit of batter in bottom, a cooked meatball, and cover with batter.  Bake as normal.  Like eating a little slider!  Served with a fresh salad - yummy and I was full.  That is what matters.
Goulash - the pizza way!  Yep, simple goulash with pizza toppings added (and pizza sauce).  It was simple, no baking like for pizza, and had the pizza taste.
Some of my best meals are just simple and basic items.  I like variety - so I experiment.  It generally works out!

I am not pretentious at all - what you see is what you get.  Don't like it - don't care.  My job is not to impress folks; it is to help and be kind.

We all tend to make life too complicated.  It sure doesn't need to be.  As the old saying goes - keep it simple silly (I changed the last word)!
We are all going to leave this world someday, when God says so.  We have a limited amount of days - and no idea how many.  Make each one count - enjoy, laugh, celebrate, help, teach, guide, appreciate.  Stop any negativity - it doesn't look pretty, nor does it help anything.

Go forward and keep the days simple and basic.  They can be the most wonderful days ever.
The gift of life is a tremendous gift - make each moment the best.
That doesn't mean impressing a single person, just living a good life.

Have a wonderful and blessed day.

How Long? How Deep? How Cheap?

Howdy Ho to all.  It is a lovely cool morning going up to about 90*F.  No humidity, so it will be a nice heat.  Still have flowers blooming - begonias, geraniums, roses and a few petunias.  Garden is still going strong.  Air smells good!
So, the title asks several things.
First - how long could you go without shopping in an emergency situation?
There are so many challenges going on right now - I tend to just do my own thing.  BUT many follow along.  The big one is not shopping for 6 months.  For the most part, that would be easy peasy for me (except pet supplies).
What about you?
Stores may not always be open, or product may be short, or you may not be able to shop for any number of reasons.
How long would your goods last?
Now it may not be a balanced diet - but surviving could be doable if you have a lot of basics on hand.
I always keep a supply of flour, sugar, cornmeal, and oats on hand - so there could always be biscuits, cornbread, crusts, fritters, hand pies, pancakes, etc.
I have a nice shelf of frozen veggies in freezer, and the door contains butter and fruit.  The rest of the freezer is meat.  Protein I have.  I also keep a big container of protein powder on hand.
I have dried beans, peas and all sorts of legumes, rice, pasta of all sorts, and simple non- seasoned canned veggies and some canned meats (espec. tuna).
You need a good variety - to have balance.  If in a bad situation, just having nourishment is all that matters.

How deep can you go?
Are your pantry and freezer well stocked?  Do you have a 'deep' pantry that you can refill from?
It is time to think about these things.  Fall is a great time to stock up on some items at a good price.  Fall veggies like winter squash, pumpkin, cabbage, root veggies, apples all keep well.  You can keep them in a cool dry spot for a long time.  You can get fruit and use for jams, jellies, pie filling.  You can freeze, dehydrate, can or store in long storage.
You can often barter or glean a lot of goodies this time of the year (walnuts are falling all over)! Look around and ask.  Having extra is such a priceless gift in a moment of need!!!!!

How cheap do you eat?
I keep seeing You Tubers that talk about $50 a week for 3 or 4 adults (yes in 2025).  Meals for $5 or less.
I eat tons of fresh from the garden in the summer - and to me that is basically free food.  I have plenty on hand as well - most purchased for a very low price.
I seriously doubt that I have a $5 meal except maybe a couple times a year (at home).  Maybe a splurge for shrimp or crab, an occasional beef fillet.  Even at that - those items were purchased on sale.
A roast or large piece/package of meat - lasts for many meals for me.  So, meat (basically the highest price thing we buy) even stretches out and costs very little pr meal.
Meat should be considered a side, just like everything else.  Eat smaller portions.  If a recipe calls for a pound of ground meat - use 1/2 pound and add more of other things.

Learning to use what you have and to shop from what you have can really be a life/budget saver.  If you learn to do that now - you will be able to get through any emergency.
Learning to substitute is also a tremendous trick to know.  It only takes a little imagination.

So, what say you?
How long can you go between shopping trips and still survive well?
How deep is your pantry - can you 'shop' from it for a good period of time?
How expensive are your average meals?

Things to think about and prepare for.  Maybe start getting together recipes for those days of cheaper eating.  Ask people and maybe even work together.  Share big hauls/bulk shopping.
I want to be ready for winter - I hate going out in bad weather just to shop!

I look forward to seeing your answers.
Have a wonderful and glorious day!

Weekly Wrap Up 9/14

Happy Sunday all.  Hoping you are all well and safe and happy.  Here we are in the middle of September!!  How the heck did that happen?  Gosh, time is flying by so quickly.
It is nice this morning, a bit damp feeling.  We DID get 3 rain showers yesterday!!  Much needed.  One happened mid-day, one late afternoon, and one evening.  Nothing huge, but it was moisture that the ground so needed.
I still have hummingbirds feeding - I saw the cutest thing the other day.  A bird was feeding and had an itch!  I saw a hummy sitting there on the feeder scratching its neck!  Never had I seen that before.

The ice cream truck is still coming through the neighborhood on the weekends.  I just love hearing the songs - takes me back a 'few' years!
I keep hearing various thoughts about the coming winter.  I have even seen opposite extremes from the Old farmer's Almanac.  But I keep seeing white wooly worms around here.  So, I think I will believe them - mild (?).
Chuck - the groundhog - is sure feeding a lot before hibernation begins.  Nothing I do keeps him away at this point, so I have stopped trying.  That is one fat and fast animal!!  He climbs the fence to get in my yard.  He is still living across the alley - so that is cool.

My week was pretty calm and quiet.
My frugal week:
  • Canned 8 1/2 pints of tomato juice
  • Scalding canning water on weeds
  • I froze 3 quarts of tomatoes
  • Did a root touch up with supplies on hand
  • Cut a bunch of basil and it is drying
  • I have been getting seed heads of various flowers from my neighbor.  She has some neat varieties of things in her yard - and she is the one moving.
  • Made more hummy nectar - they sure are drinking it down
  • Made OJ from concentrate I found in freezer
  • Cut more roses for inside
  • Picking produce - peppers and tomatoes - prob. about 15 lbs. of tomatoes this week (slowing)
  • Made meatball stuffed cornbread muffins (nummy) - and froze 6 for later
  • Received my Kroger coupon book in the mail
  • NO shopping this week at all
  • Used dehumidifier water in laundry and hung laundry to dry
  • Went to a baby shower/brunch on Saturday
  • Lots of walks
  • Using what I have at home and cooking from scratch
  • No AC 95% of the week
Meals this past week:
Fried green tomatoes and grilled cheese
Fish fillet, mac n cheese and fresh veggies
'Pizza' flavored goulash, sliced toms
Chicken/bean grilled burritos topped with salad fixins
Meatball cornbread muffins and salad
Loaded cheeseburger and fries
Shower brunch - egg sandwich later in the day

There you go - pretty calm and quiet.  Mornings still allow me to open windows and get fresh air.  The AC turned on a couple late afternoons - but that is it.  Bitsy is still loving sitting in the windows and getting fresh air.
I hope your days are slowing down and staying calm.  Wishing each of you a lovely week ahead.  Stay safe and healthy.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

We Can do Better

Hello to all.  May you all be safe and healthy on this Thursday morning.  It is a cool and crisp morning here.  Love it.  We start getting warmer, and we may hit 90*F by Saturday.  Not going to complain at all.  Those warmer temps will be so very missed one day soon (sooner than we want).  The humidity levels are down, so things won't feel as bad.

Today is a somber day for America.  It is the 24th anniversary of   9/11.  I remember that day like it was yesterday.  So many senseless deaths and such destruction.  I remember going to moms after work to be with her that evening (she was so very ill at that time).  My sis was there, and the TV was on.  As ill as momma was, she sat there silently and then looked at us and "what is wrong with the world?"
Here we are 24 years later and still pondering about that question.
This has nothing to do with politics (DON'T go there), it has everything to do with decency and love.

Life is short, and it is truly fragile.  Things can change in an instant.  I just want us all to be the best that we can be.
Any of you that have lost a loved one in life, know.  They sure wouldn't want any of us to act ugly to others.  They would want us to go out in this world and do good.  They would want us to be pleasant and say a kind word.
Yep - it sure is.  As you sit and remember someone that is no longer in this world, or someone you haven't seen in ages - whatever the reason - and SMILE, be that kind of person.  That is what kind of person I want to be.  Someday when I am not here, I want people to smile when they speak or think of me.  I don't want to be remembered as that grouchy, hateful, negative person - but a happy one.
Leave a good mark in this world!

I thought long and hard about today's post - I wasn't sure what I wanted to write about.  Then I sat down this morning at the computer and this is what came out.  I do believe God moves us in a direction that we should go.

I want you to all smile today.  Remember someone not around.  Make someone else smile.
Go forward and be a positive impact on this world.  Go the GENTLER WAY!
Thank you for all being here.  You all make me smile!

Have a blessed day.

Smiles, Happiness and Joys (Mine)

Morning to you all.  Midweek post and hoping all are doing well.  It is around 60* this morning and kind of cloudy.  It will clear I imagine, and it is going to start getting warmer.  It sure has been nice to have the AC off and not needing heat.

Today, nothing exciting - but just a post about the things that give my joy and happiness and make me smile.  They are all very simple - kind of like me!
We tend to over complicate life today (my opinion).  I think life can be simple and enjoyable.  Turn off the negative and tune in to the positive.

*****Of course the main things are family and friends and pets ALWAYS******
Growing food, and preserving it and sharing it
Buying second hand when at all possible
Not shopping online
Cooking from scratch
Finding new uses for things I have
Being a clearance/salvage shopper
Experimenting with and creating with food
Nature
Learning new things
Teaching the older ways - and listening to nieces and nephews tell me how much they have learned
Using my pantry and freezers for supplies
Not being reliant totally on the 'system' for my basic needs
Having enough
Being healthy

These things are just who I am.  They are not something that I 'work' at - it is just me.  I learned a lot over the years from others - I had my moment in the sun that was bleak and spendy - then I resumed my true ways.
I know everyone looks at things differently and has different things that bring joy.  I do believe most of us have the 'big' things in common - family, friends, health and pets.

I guess an important one not listed above is being at peace with myself now in life.  That is so important.  That one took a while.
I know so many people who are just bitter and angry with about everything and everyone.  They project it as well.  That truly helps no one.
Being happy and appreciative spills over to others.  Spread that stuff around!

What small things make you smile or gives you joy?
I love knowing what people find joyful.

Have a wonderful day and enjoy even the smallest wonder!

Fun Fall Food

Howdy all!  Here we are into another week already.  I surely hope you are all safe and well.
It is another cool morning - so refreshing out.  The moon was bright and full again this morning when I got up.  Fed the critters and the cats already.  Licorice ate outside and then he went exploring the yard, and then to the greenhouse for a snug bed nappy!  Bitsy is still going from door to door and window to window!  These sweeties sure keep me amused.
Some wildflowers picked with mallow, and a backdrop of tomatoes galore!

Today let's talk about fall foods!  It is that time when we think about all things fall.  Candles, leaves, comfy beds, throws, sweatshirts, football, yummy foods and snacks.  I think about comfort food!  I love comfort food!  Don't get me wrong, I do love all the summer goodies - but by the time fall gets here, I really am craving comfort food.  I am one of those seasonal eaters!

You can use your pantry and freezers and make all kinds of fun eats for little or nothing.  Just take a moment or two to creative.
I mentioned that I made hot pockets last week.  They were so easy.
This was what I had for dinner - and I made 2 others (bigger) for the freezer for another time.  Makes for a quick meal in the future.  I did mine with pizza fixings, but you can use anything.  Pizza, chili, stew, shredded leftover meat, veggies, mac n cheese (even fruit) - stuff them with whatever you have!!!  I made pizza dough, rolled it out thin.  I cut in pieces and put filling on half and then crimped edges, add a few vent holes.  The other 2 are more square and a little bigger (I will use one of them w/salad).  I used the air fryer for 10-15 minutes (turned over once) at 350*.
Now you could make them much smaller - as in 'bites' for a quick snack after school or after work.
How fun and my goodness - tasty!
My little stuffed patty pan squash!  The squash itself is about the size of a fist - so a half piece is not big.  Great as a side for dinner, or again, as a snack when coming home (eat just 1).  I cut in half, de-seeded, steamed for about 3 minutes in microwave, and then added cream cheese, cheddar shredded, chopped onion, garlic powder and baked in air fryer.  350* for about 10 minutes.  They taste so good.
Again use what you have.  Top with chili and cheese, taco meat and cheese, stuffing like stuffed peppers, whatever cheese you have, use leftover mac n cheese - the toppings are endless.
You could do this with about any type of squash.

MINI S'MORES
Use vanilla wafers or pieces of graham crackers - top with mini chips and mini marshmallows (3 or 4 of each) whatever fit and add another cookie or wafer on top.  Microwave until marshmallows puff - about 5-10 seconds.  Let them set for a minute - they are hot - then devore a yummy snack!
** I have a gas stove and have been known to stick a large marshmallow on the end of a fork and roast over the burner!  Hey, when there is a will there is a way!  LOL

EASY APPLE CRISP
6 nice apples, cored, peeled and sliced
1/3 C butter, melted
3/4 C brown sugar, packed
3/4 C quick oats (uncooked)
1/2 C all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
Place sliced apples in a buttered 11 x7 pan.  Combine other ingredients and then sprinkle over the apples.  Bake 350* until apples are soft (about 35 minute).
Super easy and tasty.  Great and sort of healthy snack or a super dessert.

CARAMEL APPLE DIP
8 oz. pack of cream cheese (softened)
3/4 C brown sugar (packed)
1/2 C butter (melted)
1 tsp. vanilla
Combine all the ingredients together and mix thoroughly.  Refrigerate for about 2 hours.  Makes about 2 cups.
Serve with sliced apples or any type of fruit you have.  I am thinking pears, strawberries, apples, peaches, bananas, oh my!!!!!!  Also yummy with graham crackers or sugar cookies.

Treats don't have to be complicated or fussy.  Homemade cookies, brownies, sweet breads, biscuits with butter and jelly.  Shoot, even makes up a bunch of small pancakes - when ready to eat them - warm and add a little jelly or chocolate or fruit.
I remember getting a snack once in a while as a kiddo of cinnamon/sugar toast!  I still do that once in a while now!  Mom would also mix peanut and syrup together and I would have on saltines.  NUMMY
I still love PB and sliced apples!  I do that fairly often.

Popcorn is also a great, cheap snack.  You can make it plain or add any type of flavorings you want to change it up.

I am so ready for homemade soups, chili, and stew!  Those are my huge comfort foods!  Cooler days really get my mind going.  I am a foody - nothing fancy - but I do love food.
I am on my continuing endeavor to use up things I have had around for a while.  I really doubt that I will need the grocery this month, except maybe wet cat food and litter.
I have plenty of milk, eggs, and cheese.  I am still eating fresh produce from the garden and that should continue for quite a bit.  I have a freezer full and a big pantry and I am set.
It is amazing how well you can eat if you just look around and use up what you have.

Get outside yourself and your normal ways of eating and get creative.  Make it your mission to not shop for a good couple week (or longer) and use some of the things you have in a new and creative way.
Have fun with making fun fall foods.
There are tons of things to do - I will give more ideas as the temps change more.
What are your favorite fall bites????

Have a superb day and enjoy it for all its wonderful glory!!!!!

Weekly Wrap Up 9/7

Hello all and happy Sunday.  I hope this finds you all well and safe.
It is a cool morn here.  It is 53*F right at the moment going to low 70's today.  Perfection for me!!
Never fear, hot weather will return by the end of the week.  It is supposed to be in the upper 80's by the end of week and next weekend.  Definitely a 2 season week.

I noticed Maebeme mention this week, the big hit in views on her blog.  I hadn't looked in a long time, and something has changed.  I checked mine, and in the past week or so, my views have dramatically increased.  I wonder what is causing that?  AI, changes in Microsoft or Google, being listed in more search engines?  Something has changed.  Have any of you noticed your blog having a lot more views as well?

This week, every evening and early morning the crickets are singing a chorus like crazy.  They are so loud.
The moon this morning was just so bright and full and it was gorgeous - I was in bed last night, so didn't see till morning.
My sparrows have sure been enjoying the birdbath this week.  No more robins taking over and the Jays don't seem too interested and the sparrows and fluttering and taking baths like crazy.  So cute.
I want to walk there!  Looks so pretty and quiet.

My frugal week:
  • Did a bunch of walks - going for longer ones.  Free exercise
  • Picked wildflowers in the alley on one of my morning walks
  • I cut single roses twice for my vase
  • Picked a bunch of produce again - tomatoes 35 lbs.+, and peppers
  • Put together new bottles of shampoo and dish soap
  • My neighbor from India, brought me over a small dish of his fried green tomatoes.  Done totally different from what I am used to - but they were very tasty
  • Mowed everything this week front to back.
  • Received more cukes from neighbor
  • Canned pizza sauce this week (a years' worth)
  • Used scalding canning water in the rock out front to kill weeds
  • Worked in the basement clearing out a lot of stuff
  • Laundry - used dehumidifier water in laundry and air dried
  • Made homemade hot pockets (pizza).  My small batch of crust mix made 4 nice ones - 2 in freezer
  • Cleaned out the refrigerator
  • Thawed and cooked a pound of sausage in various forms (refroze most)
  • I did do an errand day finally - bank, PO, feed, Ollies and super Kroger (all close together).  **If you have an Ollies, they have Del Monte canned veggies and fruit - reg. size - for .79 each.  (they do have all sizes). All kinds of things on buyout.  I ran to super Kroger to get baby shower gift.  They have lots of Carter brand and good things
  • Did another partial day of deep pantry organization - I keep moving things!
  • Made the patty pan squash I rec. a week or so ago, into stuffed squash (yum)
  • Changed out ALL bedding - put a quilt on the bed to change up look
  • My neighbor/friend that is going to move (they did sell), brought me a gift.  Her hubs made me a huge planter (kind like a wishing well) with hanging brackets and a solar light.  He does wonderful work.  I just need to paint.  So very kind of him to think of me.
  • Made more nectar - those hummies are drinking it down like crazy!
  • No AC or heat - lots of fresh air
Meals this past week:
Nachos - topped with lots of fresh veggies
Scrambled eggs and leftovers
Brat/bun, asparagus from freezer, and cuke and tom salad
Veggie fried rice
Pizza Hot Pockets (homemade)
BLT and leftover rice
Jalapeno cheeseburger, stuffed squash and cuke & tom salad
SNACKS - lots of fresh toms and cukes, fruit, apple & PB

I am so enjoying eating a lot of whole, real foods!  I just feel better.  Love this season.
What did you do this week to stay frugal?  Have you been canning or harvesting?  Any good deals?
We always look forward to hearing from you and getting new ideas.

Have a wonderful week ahead.  Stay well, safe and happy.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

Taking Care of Your Time

Morning all.  Hope you are all well this morning.  It is a cool and soggy morn here.  We got some rain overnight!  It appears around a 1/2".  It was needed.  The skies are clearing at this point and it isn't going to get too warm today.  It is so refreshing outside.

Yep, that is me!

Your time is important - retired or not.  Just little things can help and keep you a little more organized.
You all know I love baskets for keeping things together around the house.  I use baskets for books, bath accessories, and small kitchen gadgets and even in the pantry for little things.

Another idea is to keep a tray or container with ideas for lunch or treats in the frig.  It keeps those things handy or organized for the kiddos or other family.  There is less waste, and open door searching!

Use a small timer to do chores.  Play 'beat the clock'.  It makes doing chores less stressful, as you do them in smaller time periods.  Maybe 15 minutes - ding, and on to something else.  You can get a lot done in a few minutes.

Keep a calendar with important dates.  I have one in the kitchen - to keep track of birthdays or other important dates.  At the end of the year - get a new one and mark it up with those birthdays and anniversaries!

Screen calls!  I do not answer calls if I do not know the number.  The answering machine picks it up.  If it is important, I will call it back.  Otherwise, I don't have to be bothered with all those 'crank' calls.

Keep a tape measure of some sort in your handbag.  I have a small one I got years ago from a craft store, that is with me always.  Comes in handy when shopping - especially at a thrift store or yard sale.
Keep blank paper in your car.  I always have paper and a pen in the car glove compartment, in case I need to write important info down.  See a wreck - write down a plate number.  See a place you 'need' to visit sometime - write down the name.  Have a great idea while driving - write it down.  I know many have their phones for that - this old-fashioned gal does not!

I keep note paper around the house.  I have some in a drawer by the kitchen phone, I keep note paper in the table next to my couch, and even some in the bedroom.  It is nice to have a paper to jot something down on when needed.  Most of my 'paper' is not paper - but card fronts - cut down, from old cards I have received.  I love recycling them!

Learn to say NO.  You don't have to say yes to everything and everyone.  It can be stressful.  IF you don't want to do something or it cramps your time, NO without explanation is enough.

I keep chain on one line of my clothesline - metal or plastic will work.  It is great to hang laundry with a hanger and not have them blow away!  It is on the hanger, dries nicely, and ready to hang in the closet.  Save a step or two!

Use your crockpot!  It saves using the heated stove or oven, and lets you go about your day while cooking dinner.  You can also wrap bread in foil, place on top of the crockpot lid (turned over) and you will have warm bread for dinner!

Have a designated place for mail, as it comes in.  Nothing gets lost.  Also have a special place to keep receipts and paperwork for newly purchased items or gifts.

Keep a basket of rags or non-paper towels in the kitchen.  You can keep on the counter if you have space or under the sink.  Saves money and recycles (use cut-up old t-shirts and flannel items)

Keep leftovers all on one shelf in the fridge.  They don't get lost that way and are handy to use up.

Goodness, there are so many things that you can do to save your time.  Your time really is valuable.  I always have time available for family and friends, but I do value my private time.  Peace and quiet is a luxury.
Whether others believe it or not - your time is yours and it is valuable.

What are your tips for saving time?  I know you guys have some good ideas.
Have a super day and weekend.
