Good day to you all. Hoping this finds all well and safe.
Spring is in the air! It is already 66* here this morning and cloudy. Looks to be dry for most of the day, but getting to mid 70's. Yesterday was a glorious day here in the neighborhood.
I had windows open yesterday, flip flops on, and of course no heat. Today should be much of the same.
I still am not used to this time change thing. It will take a while. Not sleeping the greatest and then I have been having weird and bad dreams. Not sure I am totally enjoying the change in daylight hours yet - seems too soon.
Tonight, again overnight, we have storms coming in and some could be strong. rain most of tomorrow as well. UGH. Wish I could send it to you who are so dry right now.
Now mind you - here in Indiana weather can flip on a dime. Near 80 and a couple days later below freezing. Rain, sun, thunderstorms, threats of nasty weather, and a chance of snow flurries! Yep, all of that is in store for this week!!!!
I have a daffie almost open this morning and the forsythia is just starting to flower. Birds are singing and the day is good.
Now that spring is at hand here in the US - it is the time of the year that gleaning can begin. I know there are many who will turn their noses up and say eeewww - to this, but there are so many edibles just growing out there wild AND in your yards. You should not go hungry!I pick purslane often and use in salads and chop for scrambled eggs, I have made jelly from dandelions, violets and clover. My mom used to make dandelion greens. I need to use other 'weeds' (free food) as well. This may be my year of trying.
You just want to make sure your yard and probably the neighbor's yard isn't sprayed with chemicals.
It will soon be morel mushroom season as well!!!! Oh my gosh they so yummy. They are my pick of best mushroom. I don't get the opportunity around here to hunt them - they generally grow in the woods - this rainy damp season will be great for them.
Do you have any edibles that you can/do glean in your area?

We have talked about 'shrinkflation' some in the past weeks. We all know that items are shrinking and the price doesn't. I noticed something very subtle this week. Of course, we know TP has less sheets per roll. I had pretty much used the end of my older stash and got out some of the newer inventory - and one thing I readily noticed was the actual cardboard roll (in the center) is now bigger! Not a lot, but it is bigger. I guess that is why you can have less sheets and no one really pays attention. Now you wouldn't see that or notice when purchasing because of the packaging - subtle.

I also noticed something that really got me to thinking. I have been trying to pay more things over the phone (still not totally trusting computer). Now I put in the utility company acct. number or the last 4 digits (only) of my CC#. Then they ask me to prove who I am.
Now mind you I did not put in the whole CC# - no one can use my utility acct. - so why? Is someone trying to pay my bill for me? If so - LET THEM!!!! You can only get balance and pay on these phone numbers (no buying). I just do not understand all the silly things that go on anymore. I guess I am old fashioned and not technically smart.

Yesterday I did yard work - it was such a glorious day. It seems each year - I get tired a lot quicker! Go figure!! My poor hands are so sore this morning. I was pulling, cutting and grabbing things.
I do find it amazing how just a few little things done, can make such a difference. I wish more people would do bits here and there - golly, things would look so much prettier all over.
Even just walking and picking up any trash they see. I noticed the last time I was out in the car; how much trash accumulates in greenery close to the roads. I can't imagine throwing something out the window - yet people do it daily. So sad and really nasty.
What goes on that makes you go hmmmmmmm?
My head is just all over the place today - no method to my madness!
I hope you all have a lovely day and storm damage or problems.

I've had trouble with bad dreams and not sleeping well through the night for the last week or two. I have no idea why because normally I sleep through the night, long and hard. I hope it goes away for both of us soon. I need my sleep.
ReplyDeleteWe eat dandelion greens in salad and yes to morel mushrooms. It's almost that time. They truly are so delicious.
Have a great day!!
Well, I am sorry that is happening to you as well. I hate having bad dreams - and most generally I have no idea where the stuff came from! I hope you get back to normal soon.
DeleteOh goodness, never thought to use them in salad and not cooked! Thanks. Morel mushrooms are the best.
Oh, Cheryl. The things that make me go hmmmm would take up far too much of your blog space!
ReplyDeleteLOL - that is funny. Some days seem worse than others on the hmmm things! Have a good one!
DeleteShrinkflation is alive and well these days. We buy Teton beef sausages from Costco and while they taste very good, I didn't like them because they were so huge. The sausages have definitely shrunk. I hadn't noticed that about the tp roll.
ReplyDeleteMorels! They ask a fortune for them in the stores so we rely on our childhood memories. I loved my mom's wilted lettuce and fresh green onions and little radishes in the spring.
Bad dreams are not fun. It seems that they will run in spurts and then not reoccur for quite a while.
Cloudy today and rain is predicted for tomorrow. We worked outside in the gardens yesterday. The ground is still very wet.
Off to the dentist for a cleaning. That is not the Farmer's favorite thing. However, gotta take care of the chompers.
Seems so many things changed in size.
DeleteOh, I love wilted lettuce - still a favorite of mine. Green onions - so waiting for those.
No those dreams are horrible, and I wake and then go back to sleep and they continue. So many are about people from the waaaayyyy past!
Yeah, it is muddy still - but working in the nice temperature is worth it.
Your rain is supposed to come our way on Thursday, fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteMy mom loved dandelions. I don’t think they grow here. We would go to the “natural foods” store once in awhile.
I’ve also been working in the yard and I cleaned up two gardens on the side and back of the house and raked yet more leaves. Tomorrow is trash day but I’ll have to wait until next week to give four extra bags of yard debris. It is very tiring but I still enjoy it.
I got my Medicare Supplement rate increase which they do in June rather than January. Up 15% which is awful but I budgeted almost the exact amount. Looking back, the supplement has doubled since I first got it 6 years ago. Scary looking ahead.
I may have a buyer for my house! If it doesn’t work out so be it but it would be nice to not have to pay the upcoming flood insurance bill on it. Barbara M.
Cheryl, one more thing I wanted to mention about your utility bills if you might be interested. I have my electric and water/sewer (and also my Medicare Supplement) automatically deducted from my checking account each month. I love it! If I’m hospitalized or evacuated from a hurricane, I know those important bills are paid and I just find it super convenient.
DeleteA few years ago the little girl in the neighbourhood commented to me that I must love dandelions because I grow so many of them!
ReplyDeleteCheryl, we had a glorious day yesterday also, I worked so hard and so much outside that by evening "I hit the wall". But I was so pleased to get so much done. There is still way much to do but it will happen when it happens. Would you believe I am still dealing with leaves from last Fall....we didn't have much time between leaf fall and snow.
ReplyDeleteI have started cleaning flowerbeds that are close to the house, the wrens have shown up so leaving the seed heads for a while.
I have also been having bad/weird dreams. I think I may be overthinking the current events of the world and internalizing the fact that so much is out of our control even though it affects all of us.
We can only do what we can do, and take care of one another.
JC
At a home on a busy street, I had a hedge bordering the front yard. Every spring, I would clean out the trash that had accumulated over the winter - it was disgusting! I do hope when you are picking up trash that you wear gloves (better still a grabber) to protect yourself. My godmother ended up with an infection from trash picking on her walks.
ReplyDeleteThere won't be any gardening for me at home just yet, as more snow has fallen. Melting is starting to happen as the sun's rays are warmer as we head into spring. I do plan to start my seedlings for the garden though.
We have a saying in Saskatchewan, if you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes. :)
