Weekly Wrap Up 3/1

Hello to all and happy March! Hope this finds you all well and safe.
It is again, a chilly morning (31F), but partly sunny.  We had another brief taste of spring this week, now we are back to more normal temps for this time of the year.  It looks like as the week goes on, we get back to warmer temps and lots of rainy days.  Before that happens - there is a prediction of a little sampling of snow again!
19 days until the spring equinox!  Today is meteorological spring/fall depending on which hemisphere you live in.
I have so been enjoying seeing the robins - more each day.  Love hearing the birds singing, that is the sound of spring to me.
My frugal week:
  • I did go out to lunch with grade school friends this week.  We did something new this time - everyone brought an item (or more) to a 'free' table - and you got to pick anything you wanted to take home.  Helping get rid of things we don't need.  I was going to get nothing, but I did take an inspirational book and a brand-new yummy smelling candle!
  • I keep the greenhouse top tarped.  It helps shed snow in winter, holds heat for kitties, and protects in case any window may leak.  The last big wind finally shredded the tarp, so I put a new one on and bungeed down.  That was a job, getting it over the peak alone and on a breezy day, but is done.  I am sure it was a funny sight!
  • I did run some errands.  Kroger basically needed milk and more cat food (boy, I go through a lot).  I did get some clearance deals while there
80% ground beef for 3.60/lb.  Bags of produce were 1.50 each.  2 lbs. of zucchini for 1.50 - normally 1.99/lb.  Cukes and peppers had many more in each bag, than the 2.99 regular bags had.
  • Got my monthly gas fill-up while out.  2.17/gal. w/points - total fill-up was $15.50
  • I did stop at the hardware store on the way home from Kroger.  Got a tarp and some new bungee cords.  Noticed that they now sell key fob covers and can make electronic key fobs for many vehicles!  They run about 60% less than going to the dealer - good to know
  • Was in the mood for biscuits - I had a roll in frig that needed used from the holidays.  I baked 8 Grands.  Usually make from scratch - but these needed used
  • Sis visits - I am not sure how soon she can get back to apt.  She is in rehab but not doing well walking herself alone (w/walker).  She still needs a lot of help - and can't go back to assisted living until she is more independent.  She is very weak and has little appetite.  You only have so many days in rehab (w/Medicare) - so not sure what will happen.  I sure hope her strength increases very soon.  I try to encourage her and pray for her constantly - nothing else I can do.  I just wonder if she has given up.
  • While visiting sis one day I stopped at Menards and Aldi.  Got more cat food and critter feed at Menards and a couple things for the yard for spring clean-up.  ALDI had brisket on sale, so I stopped for that sale.  3.49/lb.  Super price for around here.
I usually get flat cut - but for the price I didn't care!
  • Did some yard clean-up on a couple days
  • Scoured out all the watering holes
  • Got to air the house a couple days and turn off heat - so lovely
  • I tore off the much-worn stair treads from the side steps and replaced.  Steps are wooden and get very slick when wet
  • Cut up some of the cukes I bought and put in pickle juice in the frig - love that extra flavor in salads
  • Lots of laundry - cold water - hung most in basement to dry
  • Paid all bills I had and received.  Some by phone and mailed a couple
  • Got to do my walking a few days - slowly getting back into that!!  Nice talking w/neighbors again
  • Saved some jars for re-use
Meals from home this past week:
Grilled burritos -using lentil taco filling, cheese and sour cream
Out to eat w/friends
Homemade pizza (used tons of frig/freezer items)
Pizza and salad
Bacon/egg biscuits
Stew (freezer) and biscuits
Chicken egg rolls and a side salad
SNACKS - milkshake, fruit, biscuit & jelly, cheese and crackers

Seems like I kept busy - but mainly just running.  Between getting rear ended, tarping the greenhouse roof and repairing the treads - my neck is a little sore!  Things sure wear me out quicker the older I get.  Just glad I am still able.
How was your week?  Did you get anything done outdoors?  Or is your weather still nasty?  Any deals this week?
Hope you stop by and check in - love hearing from you all.

Wishing you all a super week ahead.  Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

One of my favorite verses
Have no anxiety about anything; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Colassians1 4:6-7

Lord, thank You for all our blessings in this past week.
Help us each one to put our trust and faith in You and Your word.  Your will be done, is so hard for us to remember.  We each one stress about things and worry and fret, when You already know the outcome.  Help us to take a deep breath and really trust in the word. We are always safe with You, now and in the future.  Help us to count our blessings, instead of our problems.  AMEN

He knows!

  1. Oooh, I like that last bit "I don't know what to pray for..." that is absolutely spot on. :)
Chilly, sunny, daffodils, crocus, and plenty of typical 'start of the new month' jobs to do, like turning calendar pages and getting totals for last month's expenses. But today I'll try to be outdoors part of the time, probably with an old homemade covid-mask on against pollen. Just the idea of walking in sunshine that isn't freezing me to death sounds wonderful!
Sure hope your sis gets her feet under her very soon, but it's hard to regain strength at advanced age. Prayers.

    1. I thought it summed it up = God always knows, even when we can't get it out.
Being in the sunshine is always wonderful. I so enjoyed being out the time I got this week. Nothing better. Sounds like you are in allergy season already! Good luck.
I sure hope so as well, I really would like to see her get home soon. I just keep praying.
      Have a wonderful week.

  2. Excellent devotional! I pinned your little quote. Sometimes we don't have the words and that is where the Ruach HaKodesh speaks for us. I am burdened by some upcoming events; some to do with our family some to do with others, and I find that my words seem inadequate.

Your car was rear-ended?! How did I miss that? Hope you don't have any lingering discomfort. Sometimes something like that shows up days later. Fighting with that tarp didn't help any but sometimes needs must.

I pray that your sister will be able to return to her apartment. One could see how she would be discouraged.

That is good to know about making keys at the hardware store. Going to a dealership is expensive, for anything!

We have been doing small jobs, getting ready for spring. Our springs bulbs are up and the autumn joy sedum is starting to show signs of growth.

Off to Menard's in a while to pick up some hardware to make hoops to cover the garden beds. Enjoy your day, you and Bits!

    1. Sometimes we just don't have words - but He knows.
Yes, I wrote about that under the "Nudges" post. No damage - just a very scary event.
I know she is down and I really think she is just tired of 'fighting' to stay well.
The nice days, made for good times to get some things done. I did little things - but it felt good. I have things poking their little heads out.
Have a good shop. Have a lovely week.

  3. Cheryl, good for you for getting the tarp on the greenhouse! Some jobs are so difficult without “another set of hands.” I hope that your sister can regain her strength. Does she have children?

February was a very low spend month for me. This month will be higher because I have car insurance and a dental check-up. (A few days ago I got a $13.56 rebate check from my car insurance. This may be because I moved. My insurance company is giving bigger rebates they say will average $100 per car but not until this summer.)

I raked 7 bags of leaves in the back yard. My neighbor kindly picked up the leaves in the front yard with his mower. He then helped me mend my garden hose. I already hade the “male” mender gadget from my mom’s garden supplies (still on card, Kmart .99 so must be pretty old). We got a heavy rain on Friday and really needed it. Barbara M.

    2. It was a job - me and a tomato stake to get it over the peak - then try to fasten edges fast. It had to look comical.
I hope she does as well - yes she has 4 living children, 3 sort of close by. They try to get her motivated - I just kind of think she is so tired.
      Even little rebates are nice.
That is a lot of raking. It always looks so nice when done though. I did a little raking - but nothing like that. I bet the yard looks nice. Sweet neighbor you have.
LOL - those old parts still work - that is why we keep stuff around!!!
I have my car insurance through State Farm as well as home insurance. It is expensive everywhere. My vehicle insurance isn't bad - homeowners is getting a bit nuts.
      Have a super week.

    3. Joyce and Cheryl, I have State Farm. It has gone up a lot the past few years. They announced last week that repair costs have not been as much as expected and they are giving policyholders an estimated $100 rebate this summer. It will be interesting to see if my 6-month bill has gone down when I get it this month. My county has the highest car insurance in the state, sadly. Barbara M.

  4. I think it is wonderful you are still in touch with grade school friends.
Here's hoping your sister is able to recover enough to return to the assisted living home. If she doesn't, is she able to get into a long-term care home? It must be worrisome for her and you as well.

    1. They are some very good friends - have known most of them since first grade - about 65 years.
I hope so too. Yes, she could get into a long-term care home, but that is not even a choice any of us wants to think of. I do believe that she would totally give up if that happened.
Have a lovely week. Stay cool.

  5. We could use some of those stair treads, I need to look into those. I feel for your sister, having gone through similar things with Mom, it's hard to navigate staying in the hospital verses needing help at home. The free table with your friends sounds like fun, what a great idea! You picked up some really good deals Kroger. I love that!

    1. Wood steps get slick easily - need something down on them.
Yeah, she is 94 soon to be 95 and there are only so many options. Her children don't seem to think about the option of her living with them - and neither does she to be honest. I don't know what will happen, I just keep praying she can get back to the asst. living place.
Thanks - found a few goodies.
      Have a great week.

  6. We've had a few days this week when it has been at least partially sunny. I have had windows open, washing on the line and have even wandered around the garden tidying up dead stems whilst admiring the spring flowers. Inside I have been touching up chips on paintwork. I am always amazed how little things like that draw the eye and a quick repair makes such a difference.
